Art Trail Triumph for Cam Valley Group

Cam Valley 4th Arts Trail line up proved to be another brilliant event taking place across 8 venues in village halls, churches, studios, and schools in the villages throughout the Cam Valley over the first weekend of November. The weather was kind to the Arts Trail, if it was a little chilly! Whilst both days proved busy, Sunday brought a surge in numbers with some venues reporting very busy periods between 1pm & 4pm! Unsurprisingly, with a brilliant line up of 44 artists and crafts people exhibiting across the venues in Cam Valley, the Trail continued its contribution to supporting artists in the region and providing opportunities for local communities to try their hand, for free, at new arts and crafts. Artists and crafters were amazed at how many people wanted to ask seeking questions about their working processes with many offering their own ideas. Cam Valley Arts Trail Group aims to make art accessible to everyone in the community by bringing artists together to sell and exhibit their work where visitors can purchase original local art and get to know the artists. Judi Gough, from Wells, commented after her visit: “I love talking to the artists and crafts people and enjoy being able to see and support local artists. The Cam Valley Trail has a superb standard.” There was plenty of entertainment for younger visitors with free workshops and demonstrations at all venues. All activities were well attended with children participating in a range of painting, drawing, printmaking, batik, collage, spinning, calligraphy, photography, felting, and more. This year the local primary school children had the opportunity to get up close and personal with a piece of artwork loaned by a Cam Valley artist, and explore the ideas that came from the piece in their poems, stories, dance, and own artwork. These finished works were on display over the weekend together with the original piece and there certainly were some superb interpretations.

The Arts Trail team would like to thank the people of Cam Valley, their volunteers, the artists, the community organisations providing refreshments, their business supporters and their sponsors – Artwork Creations, Meltone Gallery, Swan Artworks, Wellsway Chiropractic Clinic, Clutton Parish Council, and High Littleton Parish Council. Anyone interested in finding out more about next year’s trail, which takes place on 4th & 5th Nov 2017, and the February and April events, visit www.camvalleyartstrail.co.uk

relevant policies in the core strategy noting that if the structure had not been erected so close to the boundary it would be permitted development. HIGHWAYS, RIGHTS OF WAY AND ALLIED MATTERS The planters at the top of Stoneage Lane have been levelled and sown with grass seed / hopefully grass next year. Work on the drain problems on the Hollow scheduled to commence 7 November. We have requested from B&NES highways team that the damaged chevrons on the bend of the B3115 between Tunley and North Hill Farm be reinstated. WASTE AND RECYCLING Our waste and recycling regime is going to be changed in the autumn of next year. Recycling will remain unchanged, but waste will be collected fortnightly on the same day as recycling and garden waste. The day will be confirmed at a later date. The aim is twofold, to save money and to encourage more recycling, and apparently this has worked in other parts of the country. Workshops and demonstrations are going to be held in the B&NES area in the New Year in preparation for the new system. A367 REVIEW Cllrs Orme & Robinson to progress this matter. FUTURE OF THE CRICKET GROUND The clerk reported on the work and expenditure undertaken so far. The Parish Council has so far this financial year committed to expenditure of £2,371 and pursued the idea of a Home Education Centre and the use of the field by the Bath Exiles cricket club. Unfortunately both these ideas have fallen through. A debate was then held including parishioners who were in attendance. During the debate it was agreed not to pursue the idea of a woodland area on the grounds of cost and the resulting loss of a community open space plus the continued ongoing maintenance that would be required.

Following this it was agreed for now to continue to pursue the use of a cricket ground as a community open space/sports facility with the cost of a replacement wooden building erected as a community café also being researched. It was decided that the cricket pavilion will be mothballed for the winter. A footpath to access the A367 to avoid walking along Church Lane was requested by a parishioner. Cllr Robinson confirmed that the question of a pedestrian crossing on the A367 will be part of the A367 review. Next meetings 1 December Tunley Recreation Centre. 12 January Dunkerton Parish Hall both commencing at 7.30 pm

NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH

26/10/16 7164 CN201-CS216 Raves

Residents throughout the South Gloucester and Bath & North East Somerset areas are being asked to look out for any signs of potential Raves. Although often found in rural areas, Raves can also be held in warehouses, on industrial estates or large, disused buildings. As well as the loud noise disturbance, there are also issues of public safety as large crowds form for often unregulated gatherings. Please look out or signs of groups setting up equipment or for a sudden large increase in traffic or people in what’s usually a quiet area. These events are difficult to safely stop once they have started.

And closer to home…………Dawn Humphries says……..

Subject: Burglary in Tunley

Please could you let as many Parish residents know that our car was stolen overnight from our driveway in Tunley. Thieves poked a long tree branch through our letter box and managed to hook our keys from the window ledge. Fortunately they threw our house keys on the ground, so did not break in fully, but they could have done. We heard nothing, and this is a small house. We have learnt a very valuable life lesson, to never leave sets of keys near the front door. The police advised us to never leave keys in the door or windows either, but to put them in a safe place, easy to grab in an emergency, but in a cupboard out of the way. Scary to think that we have such people lurking around the village at night, looking for an opportunity to commit crime, but I guess we do……………………… Many thanks

If you have any information regarding this or any incident, please contact the Police on 101. Alternatively, you can call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111

From the Rectory

Have you ever been present when a baby was born? I’ve only been in a labour ward once – I was ‘booted out’ when our son was born because Sylvia was having such a rough time! For the mother, until modern drugs were available, the experience used to be a very painful, and dangerous one, I’m told that things are better nowadays, but I really couldn’t say! Jesus said, ‘When a woman is in labour, she has pain, because her hour has come. But when her child is born, she no longer remembers the anguish, because of the joy of having brought a human being into the world.’ Birth is what we celebrate at Christmas. The birth of Jesus was unique in many ways, which we often forget because of over-familiarity with the story.

Jesus was conceived out of wedlock, in a country under enemy occupation. He was born, weak and vulnerable, in a stable. Immediately, he became a refugee, seeking asylum in Egypt. Jesus grew up among the outcast and rejected, with, as he said nowhere to lay his head. He was accused of mixing with tax-collectors and sinners, yet he welcomed these disreputable outcasts into his new family. Deserted by his friends, he died alone and in pain on a cross. Yet he rose again, to welcome you and me into his inclusive fellowship, and give new life to all. His whole life was a sort of birthing, passing through pain to give life to a new community which embraces everyone who’s willing to join. Jesus said, ‘You will hear of wars and rumours of wars … and there will be famines and earthquakes in various places: all this is but the beginning of the birth-pangs.’ God’s in labour, bringing a new world to birth; but it’s a long and painful process for everyone. If you believe that Jesus was not just a good man, but somehow intimately related to the Creator, then in an almost unimaginable way God was coming down to earth to seek our friendship. The results of that are earth-shattering. The new community which Jesus formed around him welcomes everybody, good and bad, of every race and culture, and is meant to grow until it includes the whole human race. That demands a radical shift in our attitudes and prejudices, which is painful. But who could expect the birth of the new age to be anything else? The birth of Jesus made God more accessible, we rejoice because a little bit of heaven came down to earth in that stable at Bethlehem; come rejoice with us at one or more of our Christmas services, but also realise what we’re letting ourselves in for. Have an earth-shattering Christmas! Your friend, in Christ

WI Report

Dunkerton W.I. met on the 8th November at Tunley Recreation Centre. Sue Snook, President, welcome prospective new member, Anna. The visit by five members to Farrington Gurney's 90th birthday party was a roaring success. We were made to feel very welcome, fed a sumptuous buffet and entertained by The Men of Chew Choir. A memorable night.

Frances has volunteered as a delegate at the AGM next June at Liverpool. Members are looking forward to a Christmas meal at the King William,

Tunley and a Beetle Drive at the December meeting with mince pies and fruit punch.

Protocol demands that the meeting officially closes so that the AGM can commence. All serving officers are willing to stand for another year. Frances will take on the role as Outings organiser from Elisabeth, who has done a grand job for twenty years. At last we have a Group representative Tina. Business complete, refreshments were served and we were given a real treat, when Mollie kindly brought her life-times embroidery. Samples she had made for her "bottom drawer" right up to the present. Members were in awe and felt very proud to have such a talent in our midst.

The next meeting is December 13th.

Croquet success at Camerton

and Peasedown

On Sunday 23rd October players from many local clubs came to Camerton and Peasedown for a progressive doubles tournament, where beginners were teamed up with more experienced players and moved on to a new partner after each game. An excellent lunch was provided by Club members. The winner was David Owen from Bath, second was Caroline Tarran from Kington Langley and, only after a nail biting tie break, Camerton’s own, Andy Loakes gained third place. Everyone said that the day had been an enjoyable success and wanted more in 2017 During the year CPCC players have taken part in Regional and National Competitions. Jeremy Key Pugh won the Welsh Level Tournament, Colin Britt came second in a National Open Golf Croquet Championships, Mo Boys won the South West All England Association Final and then moved onto

the Final where she gained third place (Mo has only been playing for 3 years!) There were many wins for Club teams and a special mention should be made of the Association Team who, after only 3 years playing this game, won the South West Federation Intermediate League During the year most members took part in Club Competitions. All games were hard fought so that on Finals Day the results were: - High Handicap Singles; Malcolm Evans – Handicap Singles; Jon Bradley – Doubles; June and Oscar Bodman – Open singles; Jon Bradley – Association Singles; Jon Bradley. Club Chair, Mo Boys, gave out the awards and congratulated everyone for taking part On 6th September 32 players took part in the Open Doubles Tournament. Each couple played 6 games during the day – that’s 96 games in all! There were some amazing wins and successful shots – but one thing was certain, everyone enjoyed their day. At the end of the day the winners were the McCausland brothers (Brian and Graham) from Nailsea Croquet at Camerton and Peasedown is played throughout the year. “If you want to experience this fascinating game, just call me on 01225 708540 to arrange a time to suit - all equipment is provided, just wear flat soled shoes” said Mo Boys (Club Chair) Contact Brian Wilson [email protected] or 07970 922867

Tunley Athletic Football Club is celebrating having a new member in its ranks and no-one is happier than club secretary Yvonne Dix. At the club headquarters at the King William pub in the village landlord and landlady Tom and Jess Watson have recently had a baby daughter Daisy and it is the first baby there since Yvonne herself came along 64 years ago.

The King William has been the centre of Tunley Football Club activities for most of its 104 year history and for much of that time Yvonne’s family have run the establishment. Her parents Jack and Freda Hookings left the pub in 1962 but remained closely linked to the football club and Freda was awarded the MBE in 2000 for her services to the club and to the community as a whole. She was also the first lady to be made a Vice-President of the Somerset FA. Mrs Dix said, “Daisy’s birth was a very special moment for me. It brought back many happy memories. We were delighted for Tom and Jess who have been so supportive of the football club and have made the club members so welcome”.

If you are interested in joining the club in any capacity please contact anyone of the above for more information.
