June 8, 2021 Dear Brothers and Sisters, Jesus was an inspired preacher who preached in parables. What was the heart of His message? He proclaimed the kingdom of God; a state of affairs where God's will is done on earth and in heaven. What is the good news of Jesus? The kingdom is among you, you are part of it. This Sunday's Gospel reading (Mark 4: 26-34) offers two parables about God's lavish offer of His kingdom to all human beings. In the first one the kingdom of God is compared to the seed in the soil which is hidden but present and productive. The time between the sowing of the seed and abundant harvest encounters no obstacles. There is no action of plowing, weeding, fertilizing or irrigation in the entire process of growth. All seeds sown here matures for harvest in God's time and through His lov-ing care. The second parable compares the kingdom of God to the mustard seed. It is the smallest when sown but springs up to become the largest of shrubs providing protection and habitat for various kinds of birds. Both parables point out to us that God mysteriously works in our hearts and souls through His overflowing grace. We may not see it but gradu-ally we become aware of it by growing into better Christians. God brings His purpose to completion in His own time and in ways often known only to Him. Those who are far away from God to-day will come to find themselves close to Him tomorrow. Small and seemingly insignificant or even ridiculed projects might to be prove successful one day as well. Many Catholics do not realize that the church they belong to started with a small group of the followers of Jesus in rural and insignificant Gali-lee over two thousand years ago.

"It is good to give thanks to the Lord, to sing praise to your name, Most High, To proclaim your kindness at dawn and your faithfulness throughout the night" (Psalm 92:2-3)

Proclamó el reino de Dios; un estado de cosas donde la voluntad de Dios se hace en la tierra y en el cielo. ¿Cuáles son las buenas nuevas de Jesús? El reino está entre ustedes, ustedes son parte de él. La lectura del Evangelio de este domingo (Marcos 4: 26-34) ofrece dos parábolas sobre la generosa oferta de Dios de Su reino a todos los seres humanos. En el primero, el reino de Dios se compara con la semilla en la tierra que está escondida pero presente y productiva. A few stories to share from re-cent activity at the Center:

We have the opportunity to visit the Foodbank and ‘shop’ for extra food when our supply is low. We make an appointment and send our shopper over. We don’t have a choice, we just make a general request. This last trip we requested frozen meat. My shopper came back with 400# of meat; most of it was large racks of ribs, along with several boxes of hot dogs. I was really concerned that our guests wouldn’t be able to cook the ribs. We decided not to add them to the food bags we prepared; we put them in coolers near the door and offered them as ‘extra’ to each guest that came in. To my surprise, the ribs really went over well! Almost everyone that came in was happy to take ribs; the regular bags also had hot dogs too. I was really pleased to know that our guests would have some special food to enjoy for Memorial Day weekend.

A young man named Luke from an organization called ‘Birth Beginnings’ contacted me recent-ly asking for assistance with hygiene items for an upcoming event. He mentioned that they provide help to migrant workers. I asked if they had a need for

diapers and formula and he said yes! They have doula’s that work with mothers and could definite-ly use those items! We made arrangements to have him send someone in the next day and we gathered items for them; we hap-pened to have an overage of size 2 diapers that we don’t get calls for, as well as formula. We gave him a case of travel size soaps, a large number of boxes of diapers and a several cases of formula. He decided to come in himself and when he did, he was over-whelmed by our generosity. He spoke to one of my volunteers and explained he had driven here from Campbell University – a two hour ride. He told us that Birth Beginnings started at Campbell in late 2019 but then was stalled due to the pandemic and now they are finally up and running. He also talked about the great need for care for the expectant mothers, and the high rate of infant mortality among the migrants due to lack of prop-er care. I’m not sure who was happier that day – Luke who was driving off with our donations or my volunteers and I for being able to share the items with him!

On the schedule you will notice one minister each week will have an as-terisk (*) next to his/her name. This person will serve if Fr. Ryszard is celebrating Mass.

As we slowly return to normal, and as it has been a while since some of you may have served, here are a few friendly reminders and updated pro-tocols for Readers and Eucharistic Ministries:

The assigned reader is responsible for proclaiming the first reading, psalm, and second reading.

All readings may be found at the USCCB.org website under the “Daily Readings” tab along the top of the page. There is also a pod-cast within that link that offers an audio version of each reading. This is very convenient if you ever have any question on how to pro-nounce certain words.

The distribution of the Precious Blood remains suspended.

Eucharistic Ministers are currently positioned with two in the front of the church and two in the back of the church.

All Eucharistic Ministers are asked to be fully vaccinated and please wait two weeks after your final shot before serving.

Please wear a mask while serving.

Only ordained ministers (Deacons, Priests and Bishops) may bless people with the sign of the cross.

If a person presents him/herself with their arms folded across their chest, please offer them a verbal blessing in the form of “May God bless you in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.”

Please refrain from physically touching anyone while blessing him/her.

The Knights of Columbus Council 1074 will be hosting a Blood and Food drive on Saturday, June 19th, from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm in the parking lot of the Tileston Parish Center.

The Knights of Columbus Council 1074 in conjunction with Life Line Pregnancy of Wilmington’s Baby Bottle campaign is off to a great start. The Knights will have a box in the vestibule for returns and will continually pick them up. On Father’s Day (June 20th) the knights will be outside collecting the rest. We thank all of you for your participation in the life line pregnancy campaign.

I am actively interviewing to fill the teaching positions available in our middle school depart-ment. As I have mentioned previously, Mrs. Quinn and Mr. McFarlane are retiring, Mrs. Brown is moving to another

state, and Mrs. Kimberling is possibly pursuing another Master’s degree. We are fortunate to have many highly qualified applicants. In addition to the teaching posi-tions, our new pastor, Fr. Thomas Davis, will be arriv-ing at the end of June, and I am told that the work on the Tileston building is to be completed by that time as well.
