Pastor’s Corner
My Dear Friends,
Summer is flying by, and soon fall
will be upon us.
Chris Dayett, a very gifted and
treasured member of our St. Mary
music ministries, will be leaving us to
work on his master’s degree in theater
at Villanova University in
Pennsylvania. Currently, Chris
devotes many of his musical talents
writing music and directing one of our Latino Bands.
Barbara Gallagher, who directs our St. Mary Contemporary Choir on
Sunday mornings, will take Chris’ place at the 7 p.m. Mass on Saturdays
while continuing to lead the Contemporary Choir. Barbara is a highly
gifted pianist and composer who also serves at Fifth Avenue United
Methodist Church.
This weekend, we welcome Sisters from Belarus who will be raising
money by selling religious objects. Money raised will be used for their
work in Minsk, Belarus. The Sisters’ ministries include a psychiatric
hospital, rehabilitation center, and a homeless shelter.
As you are well aware, the Basilica Shrine of St. Mary is noted as the
premier wedding church of the Diocese of Raleigh. People come from all
over the world to marry here, and they come filled with love, hope and joy.
But not all marriages are “happily ever after” stories. On the contrary,
some marriages have couples who are profoundly unhappy. Fortunately,
there is a ministry devoted to helping marriages in trouble, and it is called
Retrouvaille. Please see the blurb in this bulletin for information on how
to contact this ministry.
At the Basilica Shrine of St. Mary, we have 3 RCIA ministries: English
Adult; Spanish Adult; and Children & Youth. We will announce when the
sign-up for these ministries begin in the fall, so if you are interested in
preparing for the Sacraments of Initiation, be listening for announcements.
I am delighted to report that I have sent to the bishop the names of 120
men and women who wish to serve as Extraordinary Ministers of Holy
Communion so he can officially commission them. Some of these
ministers will serve at English-speaking Masses, while others will serve at
Spanish-speaking Masses. Others will serve in one of the 2 branches of
the Camillus Ministry, taking Holy Communion to the sick in nursing
centers, private homes, New Hanover Regional Medical Center, or Lower
Cape Fear Hospice.
As happens every fall, our campus will have an incredible number of
events happening. Therefore, I encourage you to pay close attention to the
bulletin, web site, and announcements before weekend Masses so you
don’t miss anything important.
Sincerely yours in Christ,
Father Bob

Parish Happenings
“A Stitch….A Prayer….The Touch of God” Our Prayer Shawl ministry offers warmth and the message of God’s blessings to those in need of comfort. Members of this ministry knit and crochet special shawls and blankets that receive a pastoral blessing. These hand-made items are made available to anyone experiencing a physical or emotional crisis. Some Prayer Shawl Ministry members do their knitting and crocheting at regular meet-ings (10:00am on the 2nd & 4th Tuesdays each month) others prefer to work exclusively from home. Call Noreen at 798-0055 for more information on this wonderful ministry. If you know of anyone who needs the warmth and comfort of a prayer shawl, call Noreen and she will make arrangements to get one to you. Again, you or the recipient need not be a member of our congregation.

Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Basilica Shrine of Saint Mary – July 26 and July 27, 2014 6
Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time— Sister Isaac
Jesus continues to speak to his followers in parables and I
suspect that we can all identify with the one in today’s Gospel about the
pearl of great price. When I was in college I had a theology professor who
used to say: “For every yes there are a thousand no’s. “ That is so true
and it plays out in many of our life experiences.
For the past few weeks here at the Outreach we have been
surrounded by film trucks and, more recently, construction vehicles as the
Parish moves into achieving another of its’ goals – a handicapped ramp for
Tileston. Just to achieve this I am certain that many people here in our
community said “no” to some things that they would have enjoyed having
in order to support this good project.
And with it all, those who are in need of life’s basics continue to
come each day, generally about 35 people. Once again, some “no’s” have
provided support to the Ministry and we are grateful to be able to share
these blessings. Our volunteers try not to get discouraged as they search
for a parking space just so they can help make another person’s day a bit
more bearable.
Jesus likens the pearl of great price to our spiritual journeying.
In order to find it we have to do a lot of parting with “things” of lesser
value. Our faith reaffirms that this “yes” is worth it!
Office of Social Ministry Sister Isaac
Special Need of the Week
We will be closed for the entire month of August and will reopen Sep-
tember 8th. We are not able to receive any donations during this time
and we really need your cooperation with this, as bags and boxes will
block the entrance to the building during construction and one parking
lot will be torn up. Moreover there is no one to remove the articles and
the Parish Maintenance Team has enough to do. If you need to move
your donations from your home please consider donating them to anoth-
er charity such as Full Gospel Rescue Mission on the corner of 5th and
Castle, Vintage Value, Salvation Army or Good Will to name just a few.
This will be a tremendous help to us.

Mission Corner
Carolina Catholic interviews the hermit priest of North Carolina For our two August shows, Carolina Catholic went into the mountains of North Carolina to interview Father George David Byers, a priest living as a hermit in the mountains of Transylvania County in the Diocese of Charlotte. With Bishop Jugis’ permission, Father George lives in the mountains at his Holy Souls Her-mitage where he prays for priests, writes, and assists rural parishes on week-ends. The Pope in your pocket: new 2.0 app launched
(Vatican Radio/PCCS) Pope Francis has expressed his appreciation for
the work being done by all the Vatican’s media services in enhancing
their presence and participation in the digital world. The Pope’s words
came on Monday as he was given a personal viewing of the new updated
version of “The Pope App”, developed by the Pontifical Council for
Social Communications.
Council President Archbishop Claudio Celli, accompanied by project
coordinator, Thaddeus Jones, met with the Pope to demonstrate features
of the app, which was released in the iTunes and Google Play stores on
July 4th. Available in five languages, the Pope App 2.0 is free and can
be downloaded on Apple and Android devices. Powered by News.va, it
features the latest papal news and information as produced by the Vati-
can’s own media services – including Vatican Radio. Its new design
simplifies access to content and, according to Archbishop Celli, allows
people to be in ever closer contact with the Pope, his ministry and his
message of God’s love....

Mom loses her job, and with it, the income that was paying school tuition.
A marriage falls apart and a parent walks away, leav-ing the family destitute.
Grandma breaks her hip and has to move in with the family.
We all have our bumps in the road, but once in awhile, a St. Mary School family experiences a Random Act of Misfor-tune that suddenly wipes out a child’s chance to continue a Catholic education. In one recent spectacular Random Act of Kindness, an anonymous donor stepped forward to fund a child’s entire tuition for a year when the student’s family suddenly couldn’t pay.
St. Mary School offers tuition assistance, but we have no endowment upon which to draw and no reserve fund for helping family emergencies.
Would you consider making a gift – a Random Act of Kind-ness – to lend a hand when a student’s family simply can’t make it financially and must drop out of St. Mary School? Any amount would help us to help a child in a misfortunate situation. $100 will buy a school uniform for a child who can’t
afford it. $400 will pay for a child’s registration and materials
fee. $5,210 will pay for a full year of tuition for a Catholic
child.
All gifts to St. Mary School are tax deductible as allowed under the IRS code 501(c)3. Gifts will be used at the Prin-cipal’s discretion, but if you wish, gifts of $1,000 or more may be designated for specific purposes and will be used in that way if possible. All gifts will be considered anony-mous, but will be acknowledged with a tax receipt.
Please prayerfully consider doing a Random Act of Kind-ness to assist a Catholic family in need continue with the rich blessing of a Catholic education. Please mail a check or drop an envelope in the collection basket addressed to:
St. Mary Catholic School c/o Mrs. Joyce Price, Principal
217 S. 4th St. Wilmington, NC 28401
Many thanks in advance for your kindness, compassion, and generosity.
