The Ascension of the Lord

Served by the Discalced Carmelite Friars

Acts 1:9

Ascension of our Lord

We do watch games and sports and we often witness that when a team or a player wins, soon after the match is over, the key players of the winning team or the winning player is joyfully lifted up high by their supporters. It was the same with Jesus. Resurrection was his victory over sin & death – and immensely filled with joy, God the Father lifted him up to heaven in His arms – and this we call Ascension. Now that Jesus awaits us in heaven, his Ascension is the hope of our glorification and a guarantee to meet him in heaven.

Truly Christ Jesus is risen and has ascended into heaven. But work remains to be done. Christ Jesus now sits at the right hand of the Father in definitive and irreversible glory. Our humanity, however, is still on its journey. Our own odyssey is yet incomplete. Jesus intercedes for us constantly; Jesus continually brings His Father’s presence, power, and love to us. We still have to receive it and respond. The story of our journey is not yet over. The saving work begun by Jesus is now to be continued by the Church through us, her members.

Story of Jesus and Angel Gabriel There is an ancient legend about Jesus’ ascension into heaven. He is met by the angel Gabriel who asks him, "Now that your work is finished, what plans have you made to ensure that the truth that you brought to earth will spread throughout the world?" Jesus answered, "I have called some fishermen and tax-collectors to walk along with me as I did my Father’s will." "Yes, I know about them," said Gabriel, "but what other plans have you made? “Jesus replied, "I taught Peter, James and John about the kingdom of God; I taught Thomas about faith; and all of them were with me as I healed and preached to the multitudes. “Gabriel replied, "But you know how unreliable that lot was. Surely you must have other plans to make sure your work was not in vain." Jesus quietly replied to Gabriel, "I have no other plans. I am depending on them!! " Yes, Jesus is depending on us!!!

Deanery meeting The Deanery meeting of our priests will be held on 18th May in our Parish centre. The priests from the neighbouring churches are going to assemble and kindly pray for the success of the same.

Pentecost Sunday and Novena We have already started 9 days Novena to the Holy Spirit in preparation for the great feast of Pentecost on next Sunday. Let it be a powerful and moving novena to help us to open the third person of the Holy Trinity. Even though we pray this novena as a preparation for the feast of Pentecost, one can also pray to the Holy Spirit any time that we want. Happy Feast of Ascension and have a beautiful week end.

Fr. Johny Arattukulam, O.C.D.

RESPONSORIAL PSALM Ps 46:2−3, 6−9 R. God mounts his throne to shouts of joy: a blare of trumpets for the Lord. or R. Alleluia.

All peoples, clap your hands, cry to God with shouts of joy! For the Lord, the Most High, we must fear, great king over all the earth. R.

God goes up with shouts of joy; the Lord goes up with trumpet blast. Sing praise for God, sing praise, sing praise to our king, sing praise. R.

God is king of all the earth. Sing praise with all your skill. God is king over the nations; God reigns on his holy throne. R.

First Reading

A reading from the Acts of the Apostles 1:1−11 In my earlier work, Theophilus, I dealt with everything Jesus had done and taught from the beginning until the day he gave his instructions to the apostles he had chosen through the Holy Spirit, and was taken up to heaven. He had shown himself alive to them after his Passion by many demonstrations: for forty days he had continued to appear to them and tell them about the kingdom of God. When he had been at table with them, he had told them not to leave Jerusalem, but to wait there for what the Father had promised. ‘It is’ he had said ‘what you have heard me speak about: John baptised with water but you, not many days from now, will be baptised with the Holy Spirit.’

Now having met together, they asked him, ‘Lord, has the time come? Are you going to restore the kingdom to Israel?’ He replied, ‘It is not for you to know times or dates that the Father has decided by his own authority, but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you, and then you will be my witnesses not only in Jerusalem but throughout Judaea and Samaria, and indeed to the ends of the earth.’

As he said this he was lifted up while they looked on, and a cloud took him from their sight. They were still staring into the sky when suddenly two men in white were standing near them and they said, ‘Why are you men from Galilee standing here looking into the sky? Jesus who has been taken up from you into heaven, this same Jesus will come back in the same way as you have seen him go there.’ The word of the Lord.

Thanks be to God.

SECOND READING

A reading from the letter of St Paul to the Ephesians 4:1–13 I, the prisoner in the Lord, implore you to lead a life worthy of your vocation. Bear with one another charitably, in complete selflessness, gentleness and patience. Do all you can to preserve the unity of the Spirit by the peace that binds you together. There is one Body, one Spirit, just as you were all called into one and the same hope when you were called. There is one Lord, one faith, one baptism, and one God who is Father of all, over all, through all and within all.

Each one of us, however, has been given his own share of grace, given as Christ allotted it. [It was said that he would: When he ascended to the height, he captured prisoners, he gave gifts to men. When it says, 'he ascended', what can it mean if not that he descended right down to the lower regions of the earth? ] The one who rose higher than all the heavens to fill all things is none other than the one who descended. And to some, his gift was that they should be apostles; to some, prophets; to some, evangelists; to some, pastors and teachers; so that the saints together make a unity in the work of service, building up the body of Christ. In this way we are all to come to unity in our faith and in our knowledge of the Son of God, until we become the perfect Man, fully mature with the fullness of Christ himself. The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Gospel acclamation

Alleluia, alleluia! Go and teach all people my gospel. I am with you always, until the end of the world. Alleluia!

GOSPEL

A reading from the holy Gospel according to Mark 16:15–20 Jesus showed himself to the Eleven, and said to them, 'Go out to the whole world, proclaim the Good News to all creation. He who believes and is baptised will be saved; he who does not believe will be condemned. These are the signs that will be associated with believers: in my name they will cast out devils; they will have the gift of tongues; they will pick up snakes in their hands, and be unharmed should they drink deadly poison; they will lay their hands on the sick, who will recover.' And so the Lord Jesus, after he had spoken to them, was taken up into heaven: there at the right hand of God he took his place, while they, going out, preached everywhere, the Lord working with them and confirming the word by the signs that accompanied it. The Gospel of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Preparing to hear God’s word. With God to help us, wonderful things are possible. Jesus said, 'Go and preach the good news to everyone'. How could you preach the good news? Perhaps you could share with people instead of keeping things for yourself. Maybe you could laugh and smile, rather than complaining.

the Gospel story In today’s gospel, Jesus tells his disciples to spread the message that anyone who believes in him will be able to do wonderful things. Jesus was taken back up to heaven and sat at the right side of God. The disciples preached everywhere and Jesus was with them. Through the power of Jesus, the disciples were able to work miracles.

Blessing for Ascension May almighty God bless you, for on this very day his Only Begotten Son pierced the heights of heaven and unlocked for you the way to ascend to where he is. Amen. May he grant that, as Christ after his Resurrection was seen plainly by his disciples, so when he comes as Judge he may show himself merciful to you for all eternity. Amen. And may you, who believe he is seated with the Father in his majesty, know with joy the fulfilment of his promise to stay with you until the end of time. Amen. And may the blessing of almighty God, the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit, come down on you and remain with you for ever. Amen.

Pope’s Monthly Intention (May) The World of Finance Let us pray that those in charge of finance will work with governments to regulate the financial sphere and protect citizens from its dangers. Living with a happy sobriety: The constant accumulation of possibilities to consume distracts the heart and prevents us from valuing each thing and each moment” (Pope Francis). Stop to recognise and value the things you have. Francis invites us to: “Value the small, be grateful for the possibilities that life offers without clinging to what we have or being sad about what we do not have” (Laudato Si, 222). Share your goods: Pope Francis states: “economic institutions and social channels are not being developed quickly enough to allow the poorest to have regular access to basic resources” (Laudato Si, 109). Look for a charitiable organization or institution with which you can collaborate at this time through a donation to help

support their activities. (pray.com.au)
