Reflection

In his introduction to the writings of St. Bernard of Clair-vaux, Jean Leclercq writes that the mystery of the Ascension fulfilled the mystery of love in which Jesus returns to the glory of the Father. The Son then sends this Spirit to unite us with the Father in love. Thus, in Bernard's thought, the Ascension is a symbol for the passage of Christ from his life in mortal flesh to glorious life in the Spirit. This same tran-sition from flesh to Spirit can also be accomplished in us, since it has already taken place in Christ. But we are not simply passive recipients. There is work to be done. Luke's angels bluntly tell the apostles to get mov-ing. Matthew's final scene spells out the work: "Go forth and make disciples, baptizing them in the name of the Fa-ther, Son, and Holy Spirit, and teaching others to observe all that I have commanded you." Witness to Jesus, in word and deed.

When is the last time you witnessed to Christ, sharing what he means to you? Living the Word

An Open Letter to Eighth Graders As They Graduate

Dear Girls and Boys, Poised on the threshold of your graduation, you have every reason to be filled with exhilaration. This is a special and memorable occasion for you and your family. It is also a time of pride for the school and parish. We are privileged---and delighted---to share your joy. The other day, when I visited your class, I was exploring with you the “insights” (the sight-inside; personal convictions) you’ll be taking with you from St. Veronica Catholic School into the next stage. Many of you have spent nine years, from kindergarten to graduation class at St. Veronica. No matter how long you have been in this school, you have gained a special under-standing into God, the world, and yourself. You are going away blessed and graced, enlightened and energized, strengthened and supported, touched and transformed. There is a spring in your step, a smile on your face, and a song in your heart. On behalf of the whole parish community, I con-gratulate you on your achievement, and wish God’s choicest blessings on you. As you leave the school community, I would like to share with you five insights as a way of bidding you adieu. Memories will Linger: You are sure to treasure happy memories of St. Veronica School. Even though you may now be eager to move on to high school, when you are settled there, you’ll pine for St. Veronica. C’est la vie! When you are nostalgic for St. Veronica, know that we here are nostalgic for you. You will be much loved and missed. Change is the Law of Life: When you leave St. Veronica, you will be in for a big change in life. You’ll be part of a much bigger pool of students. There will be bigger challenges and responsibili-ties to shoulder. Know that change is part of life!

The only way to grow and develop is to change. When you face change with openness of mind, you are sure to grow with wisdom and grace. Gratitude is a Verb: Think of gratitude not so much as a noun as a verb. It’s easy to “say” thanks, but very difficult to “do” thanks. In the way you embrace the blessings in high school, you will actu-ally be giving gratitude. Your living and loving, your striving for excellence, your goodness and kindness, your sharing of life selflessly with others---all these will indicate to you if you are “doing” thanks. That is the genuine gratitude your parents and teachers and the parish community will be look-ing for in you. Your Life is about Others: The more you live from the conviction that your life is not about you, the more you’ll find happiness. Your life is a gift given to you, not for you to hoard it or hide it, but to share it and let it shine. So always think of others before you think of yourself. Place your parents and your family before you. Think of your school and community first. You are a world citizen! Think of the larger human family that needs you for its heal-ing and happiness. Faith is a New Vision: Faith in God is not some-thing you can lose, even if you want to! When you are in touch with the deepest part of yourself, you are actually in touch with God who dwells in you! You are the temple of the Holy Spirit! Live from the deepest springs God has placed within you. Then your thoughts and words and actions will be puri-fied and graced beyond your wildest dreams. If you can attune yourself to hear God’s gentle whisper-ings, you cannot go wrong. As Abraham Lincoln felt, “With God, I cannot fail. Without Him, I can-not succeed.” Wishing you success and happiness in your future endeavors, Father Charles Puthota, Ph.D. Pastor

Class of 2011

A Prayer for our 2011 Graduates

Heavenly Father, Help us to not look forward in fear to the changes in life;

Rather, may we look to the future with full hope, because as changes arise, You will lead us safely through all things, because we are Your very own

and when we cannot stand it, You will carry us in Your arms.

With You, we shall not fear what may happen tomorrow; because You are the understanding Father who cares for us today,

and who will care for us tomorrow and every day.

We have faith, O Lord, That You will either shield us from suffering, or give us unfailing strength to bear it.

Put us at peace, and give us the grace to put aside all anxious thoughts and images.

Amen

St. Veronica Parish offers sincerest congratulations and warmest blessings to our graduates of 2011. May you continue to grow deeper in faith and knowledge as you venture on your continued academic journey.

May your hopes and dreams be guided and nourished by the Holy Spirit and become realities.
