Stewardship Corner

Christ Working Through Us

Before he ascended into heaven, Jesus instructed his

disciples to proclaim the Gospel to all of creation. In

the first reading, after Jesus’ ascent, the angels ask his disciples “Why do you stand here staring at the skies?”

The angels want them to look around themselves and

be assured that Christ is working through them. The

Ascension does not memorialize Christ leaving us. But instead, Christ working through us, his mystical body,

his church. As stewards of this legacy, we too are

called to proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ in our

words and actions; in how we live and how we treat

others. Are we sharing the life of Christ with others in our day-to-day lives? In what ways do we see

ourselves proclaiming the Gospel? In what ways can

we do better?

There are a many volunteer opportunities at St.

Peter’s to suit your gifts and talents.

Call Justyna to discuss how you can share the

Gospel with your parish family 970-939-5872

Fr. Tomasz’s Weekly Reflection Today’s Gospel mentions the Ascension only in one

sentence. One verse describes one of the most profound

mysteries of our faith. Perhaps it’s because it couldn't be

expressed with words. Perhaps because Ascension is too

ineffable, it is beyond human definition. We can also get

the impression that Jesus was rushing away from this

world: the world still full of demons; still far away from

using the language of love; still full of difficult situations

every day and toxic relationships. Almost as if He was fed

up with it, and after enduring 33 years, having been

accused of blasphemy and put to a shameful death, slipped

into the bliss of Heaven, leaving us a prey to our own

harmful ideas. No, it was not an escape, but blazing a trail,

opening up a new path for us.

God did not invest in the reconstruction of a paradise on

the earth tainted by sin, but opened the way to the New

Earth and New Heaven. When Jesus ascended into

Heaven, He did not shed the skin of a human nature, but

raised it to a place neither our aspirations nor even our

imagination can reach. Jesus never spoke too much about

Heaven, not because it is an illusion, but because it cannot

be expressed. We trust in his assurances that Heaven is

available to all of us, that we can ascend to Heaven with

Him by entrusting ourselves to Him.

The word ‘heaven’ needs to be cleared of archaic

associations. Heaven is not a geographic or astronomical

place. We say it’s on high in the sense that it is unattainable

by mere mortal, but the risen Son of Man attained it and

thus made it available to all who are one with Him. Heaven

is the fullness of our friendship with God. Heaven is

already among us, as long as we live in the friendship with

Christ. However, in order to attain this Heaven on earth,

we need to learn to look at everything through the heavenly

perspective.

To look through that heavenly lens here on earth is first to

believe. Then with faith we are able to see demons to chase

them out of others rather than to accuse them because of

their experience. With faith we can speak with the pleasant

language of Heaven rather than with the vulgarity of hell.

Faith gives us the ability to rule over the serpents of evil

temptations and not be susceptible to the poison of hatred,

lying or greed. With faith Heaven becomes what it really

is: sitting at the right hand of God the Father. For what else

does it mean that Jesus is seated at the right hand of the

Father? It means the closest intimacy between the Father

and the Son. Heaven is seeing God face to face. If we can

already see God here on earth, Heaven is closer than we

think.
