May 2015 PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Music hath charms… What do The Emperor Concerto, It’s a Wonderful World, Clair de Lune, and St. James Infirmary Blues have to do with one another, and with the Probus Club of Applewood? Not much on the surface, but plenty once you dig a little. Music isn’t a big part of the Probus experience, at least in our club. Bryce Atkinson or Reg Perkin leads us in O Canada once a month, and occasionally there’s a musical theatre outing. Nonetheless, I know that music is a big part of life for many of us. And so, inspired by a couple of radio programs that invite listeners to recall a musical event that rocked their world, I asked a handful of our members ‒ musicians or just music lovers ‒ to do the same.

William Goedvolk is one of our few Probus colleagues who is a bone fide musician ‒ a career he pursued despite an early piano teacher who thought bruised knuckles would instill a love of the instrument. Rather, the inspiration came from his father. “I will never forget the powerful influence my late father had in shaping my musical career,” he says. Father, son and a live performance of a world-class pianist became the turning point. “I had never been to a concert of this nature, so you can imagine the excitement.” “The Town Hall was packed, and as the lights dimmed, the conductor took his bow. A few minutes later two gentlemen arrived, walking arm in arm. I thought this was the accepted norm, but how wrong it proved to be. “

“As one man sat at the piano, the other disappeared into the wings. Soon the pianist starting playing. I was awe struck. I had never experienced the thrill of seeing anyone playing with so much fervour and command of the piano.” “As I listened to the opening movement of Beethoven’s Emperor Concerto, I was transported into a world beyond imagination. Then my Dad leaned over and whispered that I should pay even greater attention. I asked him why? It was then that he told me the pianist was blind. I could hardly believe it. As I watched, his hands would go into the air and come down on precisely the right notes.” “To this day I cannot get this image out of my mind. He made a lasting impression on me. I wanted to be like him. Even now I realize I could never reach the heights he did, but the momentum it gave me shaped the rest of my life.” The full recording of this concerto played by that pianist, Solomon, can be found on the Internet.

We all know that Brian Hull marches to a different drummer, but may not realize that he has done so from coast to coast with all manner of musical aggregations. Here’s what rocked his world as a youngster. “At 9 years of age,” he recalls, “I set up boxes in front of the tools hanging in the garage, grabbed two sticks and started to drum. My father heard me and in a week I was taking lessons to learn how to read and play drum music. I’ve been playing ever since.” “Most of my music memories are linked to pieces I’ve played in concerts across Canada, from Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture in large concert orchestras to Louis Prima’s Sing, Sing, Sing in big jazz bands. Gershwin’s masterpiece Rhapsody in Blue still has no rival, unless it’s Keith Jarrett’s All In The Game.” “But of all the music I‘ve played, my fondest memory was listening to my sister play Clair de Lune by Claude Debussy on the family piano when I was very young. That didn’t make me a classical geek, but did ignite a love for all types of music.” Hull has one recommendation if we ever choose a Probus theme song. What else but Brian’s Song?

Norm Rutenberg makes no claim to be a skilled musician, but does confess to being a jazz fan. What’s stuck with him from earlier days? “When I was growing up,” Nat (King) Cole was my favourite, and I got every new platter that came out. “He died pretty young, and I even remember where I was when I heard about it. It was 1965 and I was with the telephone company up in Gore Bay on Manitoulin Island, driving a truck, when I heard it on the radio. It was a very sad moment.” More recently, one of CJRT’s jazz safaris produced a memorable evening, travelling from club to club in Toronto, with bands at every stop. Music from the big band era is also a source of pleasure. Favourite song? Louis Armstrong’s It’s a Wonderful World.

A night at the old Colonial in Toronto circa 1961 is what comes to my mind whenever I hear the Music and Memory feature on CJRT or Music that Rocked Your World on CBC’s Tempo. The band was Buck Clayton and the Count Basie All-Stars featuring Jimmy Rushing, who’s

St. James Infirmary Blues sticks in the memory like glue while any number of important things vanish. Anyone else who has a musical memory he’d like to share to can jot it down and send it along to [email protected] and we’ll find a spot on the web site.

‒Don Hendry Opportunities Abound As happens in a vibrant club such as ours, several members who have served the club for the last two years in supporting our administration and activities will be vacating their positions. In the Management Committee for example, the hard working members Bob Weese, Joe Reid, Brian Howitt and William Goedvolk will be leaving their positions of Speaker Coordinator, Secretary, Membership Coordinator and Activities Coordinator respectively. There will also be several vacancies among the Activities Convenors such as for the Investment; Wine Tasting; Billiards; Supper Clubs; and Mixed Bridge groups to name a few. As you can see “Opportunities Abound” so if you can offer some time to help in any of these positions, please let Doug Johnston, Bill Armour or Garry Jenkins know of your interest in helping out From my experience, I can assure you that the sobriquet “All work and no play” does not apply to any of this support. -Doug Johnston SPEAKER’S CORNER May 14 – Heather George, Cultural Coordinator, Six Nations and Chiefswood Historic Site Heather’s talk is entitled “Balancing Identities – Tekahionwake Pauline Johnson, A Poetess Between two Worlds.” Chiefswood, on the Six Nations Grand River Community, is the family home of famous Canadian poet Pauline Johnson. Speaker at April Member’s Meeting

Our guest speaker for April was Caroline Brereton, a registered nurse and an MBA graduate of Queen’s University, who is CEO of Halton Mississauga Community Care Access Centre (“CCAC”). With our fast-aging population, CCAC has its work set out for it, and with the age of our members her talk was an appropriate one. CCAC endeavors to keep patients of all ages, and not just the aged, out of hospital and in their homes, by (a) coordinating the third party assistance required to enable this to occur, including the medical, social and spiritual assistance needed, and (b) developing a personalized care plan. CCAC also counsels families on the long term care facilities that are available in our community. If you, your family or your friends need advice on home care, CCAC

can be reached at tel. 310-2222, with no area code required. Caroline was introduced by Lloyd Posno and thanked by Eric Smith. - Brian Howitt

RIPLEYS AQUARIUM TOUR On March 26, twenty one Probus members and spouses bussed from Cawthra Community Centre at 9:15 AM to the Ripley’s Aquarium where they viewed the exhibits for about 2 hours. Then, they retired to the Renaissance Hotel – part of the Rogers Centre for lunch. That followed with a walk to the nearby old railroad roundhouse which was converted into the Steam Whistle Brewery for a tour and taste of their product. A good time was had by all. Thanks to Stew MacGillivray for organizing the trip.

A Look Back…From early issues of The Apple Core As we prepare to celebrate our 10th Anniversary (see details of the magnificent lunch above), we thought it would be fun to look back at some of the various activities that members of the club have been involved in. Here is one from December 2010:

Golf

Well, the ending of the 2010 golf season, weather wise, was not indicative of the play that went on starting April 27. For the first time, in our five seasons of play, we were unable to finish our "final" game, even after 2 attempts, due to downpours of rain.

On September 28th, 32 players had to give up, before nine holes, to shallow lakes forming on the greens. This scenario repeated itself on October 5th, however those 20 players were able to complete 9 holes before throwing in the "towels" (wringing wet). The weather though, did not dampen the "spirited" fellowship that followed over a warm lunch and the countless replays of the holes played. The "skins" game format, although not played for the full 18 holes, seemed to be well received by all and it will have to be played again (to its fullest).

Throughout the season there were 16 - 24 players out every Tuesday at Saw-Whet golf course, who by the way, have been very good to us. There were 19 weekly players and 19 who played every other week. In general the weather on game day this summer has been hot.

Cheers! Mike (Preston)

Apparently Probus Golfers do not let such things as a stormy downpour interfere with their determined quest after that little white ball….or at least their discussions on the 19th hole of their perfect shot.

Club Activities

Pub Lunch The April Pub Lunch was attended by 19 Probians. The conversations were lively and all participants appeared to have enjoyed themselves. I take the opportunity to remind all future participants that the Pub Lunch is moving to the 3rd Wednesday at the usual time 11:30am effective May 2015 until the golfers can no longer make it to the course in the fall, at which time we will revert to the 3rd Tuesday. Best regards

-Bernard Book Club Book Club explores an alternate universe! Science Fiction (SF) was the genre for our April 1 meeting with our discussion of “Hominids” by Robert J. Sawyer a world renowned SF author of 23 books and a resident of Mississauga.

Page 10: THE APPLE CORE - applewoodprobusclub.org Probus... · Apple Core May 2015 ... Music hath charms… What do The Emperor Concerto, It’s a Wonderful World ... he pursued despite an

The eleven members present had views which ranged from “excellent”, to “page turner” to “not my kind of book” and scored from a high of 9 to a low of 4 with an average of 7.5. The main story line is the coming together of present day Neanderthals with present day homo sapiens through a portal being opened accidentally between two alternate universes at the bottom of a mine. We call the location the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory. For more detail you have to read the book. Both “civilizations” are obviously different having diverged 25,000 to 40,000 years ago, and the result is discussions on many subjects including religion, population control, privacy of the individual, the environment, sexual practices, quantum physics and the list goes on. The text is leavened by subtle humour and a fast paced writing style which kept me engaged with the storyline. Hominids was published in 2002 as the first book of a trilogy. Some of the members, and at least one for whom this had been his first SF read ever, plan to read the other two books, Humans and Hybrids. If you have always thought “I should try SF”, here is a good place to start. … Alan Lytle The Walkers April 2/15. There were 14 walkers who enjoyed a 7.4 km walk from Loafers Lake north to Mayfield Rd and back followed with a walk around the lake. The rain held off and it was sunny and 9C. As you can see a couple felt that they needed more exercise. We had lunch across the street at Timmy's. Some of you may feel that you would like to participate but are fearful of the length of the walks. Please join us and you can set your own pace and distance as perhaps a separate group, and

all get together for lunch. Take care and hope to see you there. Alf Chink

April 16/15. We had a total of 18 walkers for our 6.5 K walk down Etobicoke Creek from Loafers Lake to almost Williams Pkwy. We broke into 3 groups, the short [4], the mid [4] and the whole works. It was a beautiful sunny warm morning. Most had lunch at M. This walk marked the completion of our 6th year. The group walked a total of 1,000 k and we had105 different walkers. Our next walk is May 7. -Alf Chink

Biking Report Hello, fellow bikers, and welcome to another biking season. Most of the biking trails have been in excellent shape for a number of weeks now, and I have done a number of rides already, in order to prepare for an upcoming bike and barge trip on the Danube. Please give me your suggestions for rides that you would like to do in July, August, September and

Page 11: THE APPLE CORE - applewoodprobusclub.org Probus... · Apple Core May 2015 ... Music hath charms… What do The Emperor Concerto, It’s a Wonderful World ... he pursued despite an

Apple Core May 2015 Page 11 of 17

October, even if we have done those rides in recent years. If you would like to join our group, please contact me by email at [email protected]. Please also keep in mind that spouses and significant others are welcome to join us for lunch if they cannot do the biking. Our first biking venture will be on Friday, May 29th in the Luther Marsh Conservation Area, which is the largest wetland complex in Southern Ontario and is the source of our mighty Grand River. The trail is quite flat, is comprised of a mix of dirt and gravel, and runs around part of the lake for about 17 km. How much of it we do will depend on the desires of the group, in that it is not circuitous and we return the way we came. The views are beautiful, and there should be many birds present. However, in two adjoining places there are about 6 inches of water over the trail, which situation is easily handled by bringing along a pair of flip-flops. Luther Marsh is about 9 km. north of Grand Valley, such that it is a bit of a drive from Mississauga, but well worth the effort. After our morning bike ride, we will stop at Grand River Chop House for lunch and a cold beer or glass of wine. Please email me if you plan to attend, and directions will be sent out on or about May 25th. Our second trip will be one that we did last year in the late spring or thereabouts, hopefully with numerous wild flowers lining the trail. This enjoyable ride, from Palgrave to Tottenham and return, will be on Friday, June 5th and comprises about 20 km. in total. At the halfway point, we will stop at the Man of Yorke pub in Tottenham for lunch and libations. It is a bit of an eclectic place, but I enjoyed it last year. Again, let me know if you plan to attend and

further details will follow. Joseph Reid

Supper Club B Supper Club B enjoyed a “whale” of a time at Walker’s Fish Market (Dundas and Winston Churchill), where Ken and Jeanette Hubbert, Wallas and Cecile Khella; Bill and Lorene Lapier; and Bill and Ruth Rivers joined Doug and Marilyn Johnston to taste the seafood. We caught up on the news and Wallas and Cecile’s anticipation of their upcoming Paris trip. The food was good, highlighted by the large bowl of Lobster Macaroni and Cheese (leftovers were also going to serve as lunch) and we were well looked after by the waitress Gigi. Since we were secluded

in the party room our enjoyable and sometimes loud conversation did not disturb any other patrons, though we did get some quizzical looks as we left. A little pricey but recommended. -Doug Johnston

Supper Club E We dined at Piatto Restaurant, situated on Dundas Street West near the Credit River. The menu presentation was tasty and colourful with exquisite desserts. A most enjoyable evening was had by all. Those present were Tom and Cam McAuliffe, Ron and Ruth Ormiston, Mike and Maureen Pawson, Reg and Alison Perkin, Norm and Gail Rutenberg, Ron and Nancy Schramm and Barb and Don Taylor. Tom McAuliffe Supper Club G We celebrated the April dinner for Supper Club G on April 23 at Tu Casa Fine Dining, 1107 Lorne Pak Road. Attending the event were Bruce and Ester Calder, John and Elsa Bedell, Michael and Jo Etherington, Gerry and Lynda Descoteaux, Fran Corkhill, Doug and Mary Cleland. Donna McCullagh and Clancy were unable to attend. We all had a most enjoyable time at Tu Casa. We had a fixed price three course meal for $35 that was to die for. Compliments to award winning chef John Ross Woodland for the delicious food and impeccable presentation. The service was outstanding thanks to manager Dale who customized the menu for us, and our server Shay who gave us extra special treatment. All of our group said this was the "best yet". Doug Cleland Supper Club H We met at The Chelsea Restaurant 7 John Street, Port Credit on February 26th. This is a Heritage House circa 1867. It was built by the Peer family well in the known in the area. Steven Peer was involved in commercial sailing and stone hooking. It was renovated and is now a family business. Attendees were John and Elsa Bedell, Bruce and Ester Calder, Doug. and Mary Cleland, Donna McCullagh and Clancy Fulton, Mike and Jo Etherington and Fran Corkill. The food was English cuisine and very good. A thoroughly good evening was had by all. Recommended. The hosts were Capt. John and Elsa. John Bedell Supper Club J All 12 members of the Super Club J had a great evening at the Thai House 261 Lakeshore Rd in Port Credit. Amazing food, fun conversation and good interaction amongst the whole group. We closed another restaurant! We recommend this restaurant to any Probus supper group

Supper Club K Supper Club K gathered for dinner on Wednesday, April 15 at The Village Trattoria. The restaurant could be described as “a hole in the wall” in the Village of Islington but the food is excellent. Those in Mississauga had a little farther to travel but passports were not required to enter Etobicoke. As well as the food being good, the waiter was amusing but not intrusive. The restaurant is located near the corner of Dundas & Cordova (extension of Burnhamthorpe) on the south side of Dundas. The happy diners were Frances & Gil Clay, Wilma Crossley, Joan & William

Goedvolk, Bernard Rapier, Marilyn & Don Richards. A pleasant evening was had by all. Don Richards

A Supper Club The Supper Club headed by Fred Durdan was hosted last night by Keith and Mary Foster at Chelsea House restaurant. Sixteen happy members attended and all had a wonderful time. We had three choices of a three course meal from a fixed menu and the food was beautifully presented and tasted delicious. We were all pleased to see one another as the supper was cancelled last month due to so many members being out of town.

Helen McCreadie Wine Group 2 Our wine tasting was hosted by Don Steen and we sampled a variety of Carmenere and Malbec wines from Argentina and Chile. The scoring was quite close, based on our 20 mark evaluation for eight tasters from 116.5 to 127 with the two top ranked at 127 and 126.5 respectively. Price was not a factor in our tasting as the three top ranked wines were the cheapest! Bill Rivers and John Spence rounded out our group of eight tasters and a good time was had by everyone.

Wine Group 4 Our wine tasting group wholeheartedly tasted a variety of highly rated wines (90 or more points) - rated by experts, advertisers and/or the vintners themselves. After some lively discussion on the quality of the various wines and much laughter on the serious life questions of members the following three wines were rated best. 1. Wine Group 5 The intrepid Wine Group #5 met at Eric Smith’s home where the conversation started with commentary on the array of cheeses and moved on to world affairs, political issues, and the bad decisions made in the world of Canadian sports although NZ cricket final against the Aussies did get a mention in deference to the host’s home country. The wines – oh yes a collection of Shiraz from various parts of Australia. All were rated high by these very savvy wine connoisseurs.
