History happens in Las Vegas at the PBR and ABBI World Finals. Back in 2001 Chris Shivers rode Dillinger for an 96.5- the highest score ever at the World Finals (and tying the highest scored rides in the PBR). If you were at Finals in 2010 you saw Bushwacker win the $250,000 ABBI Classic title and then win the PBR’s World Champion Bucking Bull title the following year. You will undoubtedly see history made again this October at both Thomas & Mack Arena and South Point.

Our goal at ABBI has always been to get the bulls to the same level as their human competitors and in some ways we are there. Bulls have their own fans and some people outside of the industry may very well know a top bull or two alongside a famous cowboy’s name. Although there are fewer cowboys competing for money in Las Vegas than bulls, both PBR and ABBI are awarding about the same amount of money this year- over $1.5 million apiece.

I love Las Vegas. As a visitor, fan and breeder I look forward to our ABBI World Finals each and every year. As a stock contractor, there are years I am more or less excited about the bulls I’ve got qualified, but as your ABBI president I find each year to be more exciting than the last for our organization. We are always working to come up with more ways for our members to win money in Vegas and enjoy themselves at Finals.

We aren’t at the level yet where we give one world champion $1 million like the PBR does, but our Classic champion gets $250,000 and our Futurity Champion gets $100,000. Our Back Seat Buckers Champion will get $250,000. Our Lifetime Derby winner will get $100,000. Add to that our Junior Futurity and Maturity champs and we will pay out just under $1 million just to our number-one bulls in their respective categories.

South Point will once again be our home away from home. We are really lucky to have a partner like Michael Gaughan and his outstanding staff. The South Point has always been a great place for breeders and our bulls to stay. Their arena is state-of-the-art and its a first-class place for our Futurity, Derby, Maturity and Back Seat Buckers events to be held.

This year South Point is also hosting the PBR’s Heroes & Legends Reunion. Congratulations to this year’s recipients Ross Coleman and Mike White who will be receiving the Ring of Honor. On the bull side of things the great Dillinger will be honored with the PBR Brand of Honor. Herrington Cattle Co.’s legendary bull was the first back-to-back PBR World Champion Bucking Bull in 2000 and 2001.

The ABBI will be crowning our ninth Classic and Futurity champions in just a few short months. It’s hard to believe that next year will mark our tenth season. For ABBI events or for celebrating the his-tory of the PBR, South Point will be the place to be this Fall. I hope to see you there and hope that you can come out and be a part of history- and leave Las Vegas a winner.

Record and preserve the pedigrees of the world’s premier bucking bull livestock while maintaining the integrity and

enhancing the value of the breed.

Provide beneficial services for ABBI members that enhance and encourage “best practices” in bucking bull ownership,

breeding, training and welfare.

Generate interest and growth in ABBI through registered cattle ownership, membership, education, sponsorship and involvement through marketing, promotion, advertising

and publicity of the bucking bull breed and ABBI benefits, services and events.

Develop diverse and comprehensive programs and events that will educate and familiarize owners, members and

the general public in the unique heritage and qualities of bucking bull livestock.

lifetime Derby, american Heritage, Back seat Buckers & las Vegas

I want to start by thanking everyone who bought a spot in our Lifetime Derby last month. We sold out of 50 spots in less than three hours! We sent out an email blast, pro-moted it on our website and posted on Face-book and Twitter. If you are like me, then you may not be a fan of social media but in this day and age it is often the fastest way to share information. I’d suggest everyone check out americanbuckingbull.com at least once a week to find out the latest and greatest things going on at ABBI so you don’t miss out. If you are into social media, then by all means like us on Facebook and follow us on twitter.

I need to give an even bigger thank you to Lazy E Arena and Robert Simpson. We’ve had so many entries the last few years of the Ameri-can Heritage that we knew we’d outgrown the arena that had hosted us from the beginning. We needed to find a new home and we wanted to stay in Oklahoma if possible, since it is pretty close to the center of the country and we have breeders who haul bulls from all corners. We also needed a facility that could comfortably accommodate both bulls, breeders and fans

We found not only a top-notch facility at Lazy E but also a new friend and partner in Robert Simpson and his staff. The ABBI and Lazy E staff worked side-by-side to pull to-gether to produce our biggest event, outside of Finals, in just a few short months. This year’s American Heritage featured the traditional Fu-turity and Junior Futurity as well as a Maturity

and Derby in the arena. The Lazy E’s Cantina hosted a welcome reception, Calcutta, Quali-tech seminar featuring Dr. Warner, and parties each night after the events. I doubt we could have found a facility better suited to our needs anywhere else.

My hat is off to Lazy E and their staff and my ABBI staff for making this American Heri-tage the best ever. Our partners were crucial too. Priefert literally brought in hundreds of pens for us so over 200 animals could be kept inside in the air conditioned building. Big Tex brought out the Back Seat Buckers trailer for us so everyone could see it (it turned out great) as well as some of their other trailers. Wolf Creek Cattle stepped up to be the pre-senting sponsor for the Junior Futurity, giv-ing our youngest members an opportunity to compete- and shine- next to some of the most accomplished breeders in the world.

Congratulations to everyone who was in the money in Guthrie, Okla. We paid out over $520,000. That amount is second only to what we pay out in Vegas- which will be over $1.5 million dollars this year. If you don’t have your room or ticket packages booked yet, call the of-fice to get great ABBI rates at our host hotel South Point and check out the Vegas section in this issue to find out more on all the great event and activities we have planned..

If you read this magazine because you are a fan of bucking bulls, or if you are a small breeder just starting out then check out our

Back Seat Buckers program. For an invest-ment of under $12,000 you can become a stock contractor with a shot at your share of half a million dollars. At the end of the season you can sell your bull, take him back to your ranch (or wherever you choose) or enter him in our BSB Derby program. As we’ve seen af-ter the first Pueblo event, bulls that went for the minimum bid at the draft did very well- so although you can bid as much as you’d like to have your pick of the animals, you don’t have to have big money to succeed at Back Seat Buckers because we only buy quality bulls for the program.

That said, if you have a yearling bull you want to sell to us for the 2013 Back Seat Buck-ers program, starting Sept. 1 we will be screen-ing bulls at VBBINow.com. This is also a great opportunity for smaller breeders to get their bulls out there and into an ABBI program. The bull that goes for the most at the draft earns the program they came from a brand-new Ford F150 truck too (as well as a new truck for the bull’s new owner).

Whether you support the ABBI as a mem-ber, fan or friend- thank you. I hope to see you at one of our remaining season events and then in Las Vegas. It’s going to be one hell of a ride!

Champions take the right genes, the right attitude and the right nutrition. Championship nutrition starts with SQM. Conducted over 30 years, across species and under varying conditions, study after study proves the bioavailability of SQM. Improved bioavail-ability can optimize immunity and assure higher levels needed to maximize the benefit of your vaccination program. The key to this bioavailability is SQM’s PolyTransport technology. Created from a custom blend of poly-saccharides, our PolyTransport technology forms a protective escort that shields minerals from digestive damage until they can be absorbed and utilized.

CC Stealth is proud to be the official dummy of the ABBI. All CC products are built bull tough and hand tested by American cowboys. Whether the CC Rider, CC Stealth or CC Micro Stealth fits your needs, you can rest assured that there are no safer or tougher bucking bull dummy products on the market today. Made in the USA, and then tested by some of the industry’s top stock contrac-tors and cowboys, you can rest assured that a CC product will outlast and out perform any other dummy you can buy. We also put bull safety first and foremost. All our products are made with no sharp edges and are designed with two control and release systems completely independent of each other to reduce hang-ups and dummy-related injuries. Page 10: The American Bucking Bull Magazine - July/Aug Issue

I thought that title might grab your attention. I decided that it was an important request to make after several people told me that no one ever reads the ‘Letter from the Editor’ in any magazine (not just ours, so I tried not to take it personally).

I do typically reflect on something going on in the industry in my column, but it can also sometimes be the source of breaking news. As the last page of the magazine to get produced, if something ground break-ing happens in the ABBI over the weekend before we go to press, odds are good the only way we can fit it into the magazine is in this column.

There are no earth-shattering news items or alarm-sounding alerts this time. So consider this only a test, but you may want to check at least my first paragraph or two in future issues just in case. Those of you who don’t ever read any ‘Letter from the Editor’ may now turn the page (no hard feelings, I promise).

For the rest of you... I realize that a print magazine in this digital age can seem like a really slow way to get your news about our industry. With things happening and changing so quickly, there is no way a bimonth-ly magazine can always bring you breaking news or even information about a program or opportunity that may have come and gone before we go to press again. That is why I encourage everyone to check our website periodically and follow us on twitter and on Facebook. Make sure you are getting our eblasts too in your inbox (call the office if you aren’t, and if that last sentence sounded like a foreign language, ask anyone who walks around staring at their smart phone all day for help).

Our sister company, the PBR, has gone all digital with their fan-based magazine. We know from many of you that our base, the breeders, enjoys taking our magazine on the road with them or leaving it in the

glovebox of their pickup to read as they have time. I’m pretty sure we are standard reading in quite a few throne rooms too, but let’s keep this clean. We are going to continue to be a print magazine but we are bow-ing down to technology somewhat.

We have changed the format of our recaps this issue. We know that by the time you get this magazine you could have easily learned the results of an event from americanbuckingbull.com, Facebook, twitter or even the old-fashioned grapevine. We will now be running pictures and highlights instead of detailed recaps in order to bring you more in-depth feature stories about the industry. I’d also like to thank Hannah Gant for writing one last junior column for us when our new junior columnist wasn’t quite ready to take the reins yet

I hope this issue helps prepare you for our upcoming World Finals. Turn to page 42 to see a tentative schedule of events and learn more about this year’s activities. You may also want to visit pbr.com to pre-view their schedule. The next issue of our magazine won’t be out until October and will do double-duty as an ABBI World Finals program in Las Vegas.

As you know first-hand, we are entrenched in the middle of our busy season. I’m preparing to pack my bags for four weeks of ABBI events, meetings and writing stories as I crisscross Texas and Oklahoma. I hope to see you at one of our events in the next few weeks but I’m even more hopeful that you get a bull qualified for Las Vegas and that our paths may cross there. Good luck and enjoy the rest of your summer.

Member’s Mailbagindustry rallies for Daughter of aBBi Breeder

ABBI Breeders Jeff and Tonja Tosh of Wyoming respond to the out-pouring of support, prayers and sentiments received after daughter Ash-ley, 10, was involved in a drowning accident on Thursday, July 28, 2012 at the city pool in Torrington, Wyoming.

Ashley was taken by life-flight to Children’s Hospital Colorado in Aurora, outside of Denver. She had a very touchy couple of days but is making remarkable progress. Ashley is still in Pediatrics ICU and is on a ventilator but is expected to be hospitalized for perhaps several weeks until her lungs heal. Fortunately, Ashley’s brain appears to have little or no brain damage. Even though she can’t talk, she can gesture and even write her thoughts. She wrote she was so thirsty she could drink a gallon of 2% milk. Yes, she even wrote the little “%” sign! We prop up an i-Pod on her pillow so she can listen to Chris LeDeoux. The nurses here are calling her a miracle because of her amazing progress considering the severity of her accident.

We have received an outpouring of love and support from family, friends and total strangers. We believe in the power of prayer and feel the good energy flowing through our little girl’s body. Ashley is such a blessing and has a strong spirit and the fight of a redhead. She can’t wait to go home and play with her dogs and sheep, go fishing with her Dad, do crafts with her Mom, shoot bows and arrows with her brother Brady, and reconnect with her friends. She has by far the best yearling bull calf

and we are hopeful for her to take him to some ABBI Junior Futurities next year.

We want to extend our deepest thanks for everyone’s thoughts and prayers. We definitely have felt the love.

Sincerely,Jeff & Tonja Tosh

hauled by the Toshs’ include: Angry Allen, Captain Jack Sparrow, Vanilla Ice, DiamondJLivestock.com, Salt Water, Ivy League and Snot Slinger.

UPDATE: Ashley was released from the hospital and is home and is doing amazing.

Want to increase your bucking stock’s market value?

Then you’ll want to be a part of the Super Stakes Program. This new program provides added incentive for Bucking Stock owners who buck their bulls in ABBI Events. The Super Stakes Program pays cash dividends for money earned by nominated bulls at ABBI-approved events.

In fact, the Super Stakes Program is the most unique incentive program in the bucking stock industry today. Here are some of the program benefits:

• Bull calves that are registered in their birth year by December 31 will have the opportunity to enter into the program for only $25.00/head

• As a bull calf gets nominated the sire and dam also gets nomi-nated provided that both sire and dam are verified.

• Super Stakes money is divided and paid annually. Payouts are based on the total number money earned by the bulls at the end of the 2-Year-Old Year, 3-Year-Old Year and 4-Year-Old Year.

• A list of nominated calves will be published January through Oc-tober issues of The American Bucking Bull, Inc. This is an added service to provide potential buyers with the information needed to make informed decisions when buying ABBI registered bulls.

• The calf will be listed as a Super Stake Participant in the registry.

information for Bull and Cow ownersThis program highlights not only the calf but the dam and sire

as well. This is a great way to increase the value of the sire or dam by enrolling their offspring into the program.

How to enroll:For 2012 calves it is easy, just enter them online or by checking the box for Super Stakes when registering.

How is the amount of prize money awarded each year determined?

An ABBI bull has a competition career for three years. Based on that fact, the total money awarded in any year is determined by the amount of bull calf nominations in their birth year and then a per-centage will be used for each year of competition.

The $25.00/head is split up between sire, dam and calf. As a calf is nominated $15.00 goes into the calf payout, $5.00 goes into the dam payout and $5.00 goes into the sire payout.

• 2-year-old Year - payout is 20% of bull calves nominated in the same birth year

• 3-year-old Year - payout is 30% of bull calves nominated in the same birth year

• 4-Year-Old Year – payout is 50% of bull calves nominated in the same birth year

payout:

Payout will occur every year the bull is competing in an ABBI event at the end of the season. Payout will be based on money won. Below is the possible payouts (management fees not excluded).

rules and regulations• All calves nominated in the Super Stakes Program must be regis-

tered and nominated in their birth year.• EID tag must be placed in the calves’ ear in the birth year. Online

entry available for animals who have EID tags. » Any Re-tags must be done immediately in order to keep

records up to date on the calf.• Parent penalties may apply per event.• A bull calf nomination becomes effective when the nomination

form and appropriate fees are received in the ABBI Office.• A bull calf nomination fee is non refundable. • ABBI General Regulations can be found in the ABBI Rulebook.

IT’S BEEN WELL OVER 30 MINUTES AND SCOTT ACCOMAZZO HAS TAKEN ONLY THREE PUFFS ON HIS FAKE CIGARETTE, BUT HE’S STILL UNWILLING TO LET GO OF IT. HIS LEFT FIST IS CLENCHED AROUND THE VAPOR-FILLED PLASTIC DEVICE THE WHOLE TIME HE’S BEING INTERVIEWED . NOT ONCE DOES HE

EVER CONSIDER LAYING IT DOWN ON THE TABLE IN FRONT OF HIM.

The new electronic cigarettes are in vogue these days. They’re designed to help the 37-year-old (and others like him) to quit smoking. “I went from three packs a day to a nervous tick device,” quipped Ac-comazzo, who unsuccessfully tried to ease the tension as he steadily becomes noticeably uncomfortable.

“A lot of my life the past year and a half has just been spent trying to stay alive, honestly,” said Accomaz-zo, who nervously takes a couple quick drags before con-tinuing. “I’ve got some demons I’m dealing with.”

Last year, at only 36, Accomazzo had a heart attack. As if that wasn’t enough to serve as a life-chang-

ing wake-up call to quit smoking and settle into a more health-conscious way of living, he’s dealt with the added anxiety that his father James had the first of two heart attacks at the same age. The elder Accomazzo had a second attack four years later and died during bypass surgery.

“Because of technology and the fact that I haven’t had to go through those dramatic surgeries,” he ex-plained, “I’ve convinced myself mentally that I’m not my dad and I’m not going die in five years.”

Accomazzo was in Weatherford, Texas, for a Touring Pro Division event. He and ranch hand Shane Thornton were checking in his bulls as the temperature approached 110 de-grees. They were filling a water tub when his chest tightened. Thinking it was related to heat stroke, he retreated to his pickup truck and turned up the air conditioning. He then drove 50 miles back to his ranch in nearby Stephenville.

That night Accomazzo did something he rarely does, he relaxed.

After a night on the couch his heart “calmed down” and he returned to Weatherford on Saturday evening for the event. He had just flanked a bull on the right hand side of the bucking chutes, jumped down into the arena, ran across the front of the chutes to the left hand deliveries and just as he got there — “it hit.”

“I just started pouring sweat,” Accomazzo re-called, “couldn’t breathe.”

A local ambulance crew gave him a couple aspirin and told him to stay put. Thinking it was another bout with heat stroke – coupled with his own self-described stubbornness –

he defied their advice and drove himself back home. Once home he took a couple more as-pirin and medication to treat his high blood pressure, but it was another 36 hours before he finally checked into the emergency room.

From there he was rushed to a hospital in Fort Worth, where doctors discovered his widow maker – the name used to describe the left anterior descending artery (or anterior in-terventricular branch of the left coronary ar-tery) – was 97 percent blocked. According to Accomazzo, doctors told him that 90 percent of the time patients with that much blockage of that particular artery do not survive.

“I could have died at any time,” said Ac-comazzo, who explained that it was “so hot, humid and nasty out” he simply thought he was having heat stroke. “At any second I could have dropped over dead, just like that.”

The Deal The Accomazzos are an Italian ranching

family from Tolleson, Ariz.Growing up just west of Phoenix, Scott was

heavily involved with the local 4H program from the time he was six until he was 13. He raised his own champion show pigs and won several county fairs. “From day one a passion of mine has been raising animals,” he said, “qual-ity competition stock.”

At 13, he grew bored with pigs and, hon-estly, as a teenager, rodeo was considered to be a much cooler activity among his peers.

He started roping calves and team roping with a childhood buddy. He continued compet-ing through high school and junior rodeos. Even earning a rodeo scholarship to Tarleton State University in Stephenville, Texas, where he met Cody Ohl. Accomazzo wasn’t among

the fastest ropers on his college team, but he was technically proficient and, more impor-tantly, he had already trained two or three of the best roping horses in the country.

Ropers like Ohl and Fred Whitfield were known to use his horses, which meant he would earn 25 percent of their winnings any time they were on one of his horses.

“That’s where I was making my living,” said Accomazzo, who continued training rop-ing horses until 2000 when, at 25 years old, he broke his hip in a training accident that forced him to confront the stark reality that he was going to have to find another career because “my body wasn’t going to let me continue.”

He focused his attention to barrel horses and that in turn led him to discovering the race horse industry.

He and his wife Tiffany bought a couple stud colts with the intention that she would

also run barrels and then bought a mare for breeding. In what would be a brief foray in rac-ing they won more than $500,000 on the race track, but it was evident from the start of their venture that it was far too costly to compete at the level Accomazzo desired.

“I loved every part of it,” he recalled. “I loved the breeding part of it, but I knew from the get-go I would never be able to play at the level I wanted to play in that business because that’s a multi, multimillion dollar business, so I’ve always loved bulls. Who doesn’t love bulls?”

More importantly, Accomazzo said, “I can play at the level I want to play in the bucking bull industry—meaning a great mare in the quarter horse industry might cost $100,000 or even up to a million dollars for a great mare, where a great cow might cost anywhere from $5,000 to $25,000.”

BeT on The Queens From the moment he bought his first cow,

Accomazzo established himself as anything but a typical stock contractor. However, what was then considered an unconventional approach made his operation, Ace of Spades, a major player within the first two years.

Though the extremely high-priced world of horse racing had proved to be as financially risky as it was politically motivated, Accomazzo brought with him the notion that the “mater-nal instincts” in bucking bulls was “far more important than the sires.”

“My goal,” he said, “was to go to every ranch and buy their best cow.”

With everyone else’s attention focused on the legendary bucking bulls, he had “free reign” for just over a year. During that time he went to Monty Samford and bought the mother of Nightlife and Wildlife. He visited Danny Mason and bought Wild Onion’s mom. Bob Tallman sold him the mother of Walk this Way. Charlie Coffey sold him Fender Bender’s mom.

He bought the mother of Mesquite Heat from Lyle Dodges, while Stanley Hart sold him the mother of Big Bucks. He bought cows from Milt Bradford, Daryl Hargis and there were oth-ers from late 2003 until early 2005 when they all caught on and the purchases started to go up.

According to Accomazzo, if a cow produc-es a top-ranked bucking bull once she’ll do it again. He didn’t question their pedigree. He was “strictly looking for production.” The cows

were flushed and he kept every one of their daughters. Today the original cows are gone, but, yes, as predicted the daughters have all grown up to produce as well as their mothers.

“Everybody looked at the topside of the pedigree to see what they wanted to buy,” he explained, “so I had to have that popular bull on top over that great cow in order to create the market I wanted.”

It is a business, so Accomazzo purchased buckers like Skat Kat, Panhandle Slim, Blender Head, Up in Smoke and half-interest in Back-lash.

He said while the bulls affect about 25 per-cent of biological equation, they’re responsible for at least 75 percent of the marketing. A pop-ular bull can also generate a demand for semen sales, but, he added, breeders are beginning to focus on the maternal makeup as opposed to the sire.

“You see the trend starting to change,” Ac-comazzo said. “However, every time you see a bull like Asteroid or Bushwacker or Bones, everybody – regardless of the female factor – wants one of those calves because they’re popu-lar. Very rarely do you see anything great come out of one those great bulls and just an average Joe cow.

“A lot of people get star struck by the bull and buy stuff that’s probably not going to work. There is some luster in showing your friends, ‘Look at my toys.’”

Play To Win “I want to win,” Accomazzo said. “I want to

raise buckers and a high percentage of them.”This year, he already has three Classic

bulls – Ringo, Poncho and Hous Back – that are likely qualified for the World Finals. Not surprisingly, Ringo is out of Mesquite Heat’s mom, Poncho is out of Wow’s mother – a cow he bought from Joe Wimberly – and Hous Back is from a cow he bought from Toby Floyd.

“Every year it seems like my best bulls are out of one of those old cows,” he said, “or a daughter of those old cows.”

Accomazzo has had to “get creative” when it comes to raising the capital needed to sustain his business, so another idea he brought with him from the race horse industry is the syn-dication of bucking bulls and, in some cases, the cows.

Most of the greats competing in the Tri-ple Crown of horse racing – Kentucky Derby,

Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes – are owned by a syndicate of four, five, 10 and 20 or even as many as 50 people.

Like horse racing, Accomazzo said he’s discovered that a vast majority of the public interested in investing in bucking bulls don’t care how much of the bull they own, they sim-ply want to be considered part of the winning team. They want a share of the World Cham-pion Bulls.

“They get to come to the Finals and watch them buck,” he said. “They get to tell every-body that’s their bull and whether you own 10 percent or 100 percent, most of my customers are in it for the prizes, the fun and good times, the adrenaline rush- not necessarily to make money.”

More times than not Accomazzo will syn-dicate 10 percent shares in which investors can also breed one or two cows to their prized bull and own a stake in semen sales. A bull con-sidered good enough to generate $15,000 per share is thought to be earning his own way, so, as Accomazzo reasons, worst case scenario the investor breaks even.

The first bull Accomazzo syndicated was Backlash.

He sold 10 shares for right at $25,000 per share and generated $250,000 for what he said “wasn’t a bucker,” but he did turn out to be “a great breed bull.” He said Backlash has been the highest priced sire and through syndica-tion current greats like Asteroid, Bushwacker or Bones could generate as much as $50,000 for a 10 percent share.

The key is to weigh each situation and ask: who do I know and who would be interested? In some cases it could prove to be easier to sell 20 shares for $20,000 to $25,000 then sell 10 shares for twice the cost.

“There are a lot of gimmicks involved,” Accomazzo said, “pieces of better animals is where this industry is going.”

He later said, “I think we’ll see a lot more of that because there are not that many great bulls out there,” he explained. “There are a lot of bulls, but there are not very many Aster-oid’s. There are not that many Bushwacker’s. I’d rather own a piece of him then all of just a nice one.”

The GamBle Accomazzo isn’t alone in his syndication

ventures. He’s partnered with Cort Richards, who co-owns Lone Star Bucking Bulls with his brother Chase.

A lot of the workload entails taking calls from prospective investors and managing the relationships they’ve already developed.

As with any other investment, there are downfalls involved and those risks are part of the education process that Accomazzo and Richards go through with all newcomers. Accomazzo said it’s important to be upfront with everyone and to take the time not only breakdown the business, but to explain the different options.

Whether it’s good news – Airtime wins yet another event – or bad news, Accomazzo said, “I still have to make that call.” He added, “Truth be known, if things aren’t going well, it really is tough to answer the phone.”

When it comes to entertaining syndica-tors at various events Richards typically spends time with those who enjoy going out at night and celebrating until the wee-hours of the morning, while Accomazzo is with those are a little more low key, laidback and casual.

“It’s all about access in this business,” he further explained, “You don’t have to own it all. You just have to have access. I’ve lived by that. I bet only half my animal I own by myself. It gets tough juggling it all around, but that’s the part of it I like.”

While there are never any guarantees, Ac-comazzo said one key to syndicating is being “very confident in” the bulls he chooses to syn-dicate. He’ll rarely choose one that is unproven. For instance, Airtime had “crucified the field” twice before being sold and had proven himself to be “showy enough” to have success in the arena and “was going to win.”

The same happened with Hous Back, who won third at the annual Spring Fling in Ste-phenville.

Accomazzo and Richards came up with what they refer to as a “gambler type deal” in which they’re selling 200 pairs of semen straws that are issued along with a numbered chip. In Las Vegas, they’ll draw one chip and that per-son will win a 50 percent share of Hous Back.

It’s a $500 investment for a 5 percent chance to own 50 percent of a bull that will be competing for $250,000 prize awarded to the top futurity bull. Not to mention, whatever the future may hold. In the process, Accomazzo

and Richards generated $100,000 they can use to invest elsewhere.

“It’s kind of a gimmick,” Accomazzo said, “but for $500 you get the two straws, which are worth $500 anyway, but you have a chance to win 50 percent of the bull. (We have) to get creative in this business to network and meet new people.

“I think it’s pretty clever.”

KinG of hearTs “It’s been a wild ride the last year,” sur-

mised Accomazzo, pausing to take a few more drags from his fake cigarette. “I got depressed for two, three months.”

Asked how deals with the constant pres-sures of the bucking bull industry coupled with the stress of ongoing health issues, he simply said, “God.”

He didn’t grow up in what he would call a Christian household, “by any means,” but his mother saw to it that he attended the “only de-cent school around,” which happened to be a private Christian school. That’s where he expe-rienced the “core of Christianity” before mov-ing to the Bible belt.

In Texas, he was “reintroduced to religion.”Looking back, it was sign of divine inter-

vention that introduced him to his wife.It was before he broke his hip. He was al-

ready married and divorced, and was training roping horses when a friend came by to take him into town to a small bar. Tiffany had at-

tended Tarleton for one semester and was transferring to another school.

The night they met was her last night in town before moving to San Antonio.

She’s four years younger than him and Scott thought she wasn’t old enough to be there. After looking at her driver’s license, he told her they actually share the same birth-day—January 30. She thought it was a cheesy pickup line.

“That’s how we got to talking,” he recalled, “and the rest is history.”

Had they not both decided – at the last minute – to go “to that watering hole that night we would have never met.”

Now he’s a family man. He and Tiffany have a son, Colton. He’s as much a businessman as he is a stock contractor. More importantly, he’s still trying to stay alive.

“I left home, went to college two states away, probably did some stuff I wasn’t sup-posed to and got a little bit down,” Accomazzo concluded, “but God picked me right back up and I’ve stayed right there. I give him glory for everything that I’ve accomplished from finding my wife to raising great bucking bulls.”

The Back Seat Buckers stock contractors come from all walks of life, and all corners of the globe.Keith Ryan Cartwright visited with a cross-section of stock contractors to find out what attracted them to this ground-breaking program and to learn a little bit more about their strategy to take home a share of the half a million in prize money.

DAVID FINDLEY is the only person involved in the bucking bull business who can say, “I live in Dallas, I have a ranch in Oklahoma and I work in Africa.” The Exxon Mobile executive wasn’t joking when he deadpanned, “It’s kind of a complicated setup.”

Findley, 55, currently works as a production manager in Nigeria, but is in the process of relocating to Equatorial Guin-ea to become the top executive in the region. He’s currently the second in charge in Nigeria. He gets nine weeks vacation and spends it in the U.S., which coincides with events like Back Seat Buckers and the World Finals.

His wife, Julie, comes from a long line of Oklahoma cattle ranchers and her grandfather was inducted into the Okla-homa Agriculture Hall of Fame. In 2005, he bought land adja-cent to her family, which they manage for him, and partnered with Chad Ramer on several bucking bulls.

The ranch is only five miles from the Pages, so it was not a coincidence that Airborne, which purchased with Sam Smiley, was one of the Page bulls available in the bull draft auction. His own program features several Page cows in his herd and said, “I was targeting a Page bull.”

Smiley is a dentist from Ohio. “Great name for a dentist, isn’t it?,” asked Findley. “He really benefits from (Back Seat Buckers) because he doesn’t have to do anything.” He and Smiley were unable to attend the bull auction draft, in Arling-ton, Texas, so Findley’s daughter Christie, 28, went on their behalf.

David is back in Africa and the Findley family is planning to return for the World Finals. However, because of technol-

ogy, he said, “I don’t miss very much.” He uses a sling box setup in Dallas to watch the Built Ford Tough Series on his laptop, while he’s in Africa, as it’s being broadcast and the Back Seat Buckers events are streamed live on the Inter-net. “One of the things I’m fretting over is that when I move to Equatorial Guinea, their Internet doesn’t work as well as Nigeria,” he said. “I’m worried my sling box won’t be as good as quality.”

MIKE WARREN JR. is making a slow and steady transition from developing houses as a general contractor to building a herd of bucking bulls and working full-time as a stock contractor, but in the meantime the Back Seat Buckers program is providing the North Carolina native an opportu-nity to compete right away.

The 30 year old grew up on a angus farm and said he always liked being around cows, but added that unless you work a large volume it’s difficult to make “good money in cows.” That’s where the ABBI and, more specifically Back Seat Buckers, come into play. He’s hoping it’ll be a way into doing something he loves and “hopefully make a living at if things go right.”

Warren first became interested in the PBR while living in San Diego, Calif., for three years. “I tried to follow it as much as I could,” said Warren, “and always been interested in it.” His parents – Robert ‘Mike’ Sr. and Mary Ann – would come out west to visit in October and they would go to Las Vegas for the World Finals.

BACK SEAT BUCKERS CONT.

Mike Warren Jr. cont.He wasn’t in Pueblo, Colo., for the first event, but his par-

ents were and they emailed him a video immediately follow-ing Lock N Load’s first out. “There are five things you can go off of when you’re picking a bull,” he said, “and one of them is mentality and that’s what I liked about him when I picked him. He was aggressive.”

Lock N Load split 10th and 11th in the round with 86 points.

“It worked out,” said Warren, who said he watched a lot

of videos prior to the bull draft auction and spoke with sev-eral contractors at a dinner the night before. After talking with others, Warren said he thought there were about 15 bulls on everyone’s list that made up the Top 10 overall choices. He made a list of his Top 5 along with a secondary list from six to 15 and wound up with one from his original Top 5 list.

“Hopefully I have an eye for it,” said Warren, who later added, “and hopefully he’ll keep bucking.”

HARVEY GREEN liked what I saw in Ross Cole-man when he met him as a youngster. He and his wife Sally rooted for him throughout his career and, last year, after Coleman retired from professional bull riding and took a job with the Back Seat Buckers program, Harvey told him, “I’m buying in because of you and how you’ve conducted yourself over the last several years.

“He’s always been nice and his family has a real strong reputation for being very honorable people,” Harvey added.

The Back Seat Buckers program also provided the Greens with an opportunity to be involved in something to-gether and equally share in the excitement of owning a com-petitive bucking bull.

Sally was a “city girl,” who was born and raised in an ur-ban environment, while Harvey was raised on a small ranch and even tried his hand at bull riding when he was a young boy. These days, he and Sally live on a small ranch outside Stanley, N.M. (50 miles east of downtown Albuquerque) that he said is “more of a hobby than it is a serious ranch.”

As longtime fans of the PBR, Harvey remembers intro-ducing his wife to the sport. Not long after she knew as much or more about the bulls and the riders as Harvey did. In fact, he said, “She actually came to me on this and said, ‘Hey, why don’t we do this?’ I said, ‘OK,’ and we did.”

Prior to the bull draft, Harvey and Sally scouted all the videos posted on the Back Seat Buckers website. They were looking at how the bulls spun and kicked along with their stability and breeding background as well as whether or not “they seem to have their baring about them as far as what they were doing.”

They were less concerned about the “wow factor” and looked for consistency. However, more important, was his familiarity with Boyd & Floyd Bull Company, who Harvey said always produces good bucking stock. “That’s why went with what we did,” said Harvey, who got the third bull on his list.

Trauma 1 scored 87 points to split 8 and 9 at the first of five events in Pueblo, Colo. “What I liked about Pueblo was the bull did exactly what he did on the video,” Harvey said, “which again goes back to the consistency I was looking for in an animal.”

The Greens feel good about their chances at the upcom-ing events – Tulsa, Okla.; Thackerville, Okla.; Springfield, Mo., and Las Vegas – but they realize there are a lot of out-standing bulls in the field. Harvey said he told his wife he would be surprised if more than three or four from the Top 10, in Pueblo, finish in the Top 10 again in Tulsa.

BUDDY GARRETT is a man who looks at the op-portunities ahead of him, but earlier this year he was influ-enced by a few past misgivings when it came to his latest venture.

“There have been other investments in life that I should have done that I didn’t and now they would be worth some-thing,” he said, “if I would have got in and I didn’t get in. I just told myself I’m not going to miss this opportunity.

BSB profiles-Buddy Garrett cont.

CINDY BAILEY was one of six kids who grew up in what she called, “a regular rural neighborhood,” in Connecti-cut. In fact, her self-described Brandy Bunch family was any-thing but a ranch family with traditional western roots. She even joked that she always wanted to drive a school bus until she “grew up and figured out what she wanted to do,” and, now 33 years later, Bailey still works in the busing industry.

She and her husband Curtis are involved in the Back Seat Buckers program and it’s quite fitting they named their two-year old bull Not a Bus. What’s more interesting is how they came to discover the sport of professional bull riding.

For years the Baileys cared for an elderly friend, who the family affectionately calls Big Joe, so they were unable to go on vacations together because one always needed to be home to help out with Big Joe.

Cindy would often visit her sister in Las Vegas, while Curtis would either go hunting in Colorado or Pennsylvania. Curtis was away on a hunting trip when Cindy and Big Joe came across the PBR on TV. The first rider she was Valdiron de Oliveira and couldn’t help but wonder want kind of person would risk their life. Not long after she attended the Mohegan Sun Invitational in nearby Uncasville, Conn.

She was hooked.Cindy and Curtis both attended the World Finals that

year and five years later they’re involved in the Back Seat Buckers. “It was all because of old man Joe,” she said. A lifelong animal lover, who would love nothing more than to own a farm with at least one of every type of animal – “that would drive my husband crazy, but that’s OK” – Cindy fell in love with the bulls.

She said she’s always wanted to pet one, but no one would let her and now that she owns Not a Bus, she said, “I still can’t pet him. He’s so big and scary.”

Prior to drafting him she watched videos online with Cur-tis and her sister. Each one of them scored the bulls on a scale of 1 to 5 without letting the other know what score they had written. Cindy said they looked for kick, spin or how the bull performed overall. They watched every single video. Af-terward they compared scores and narrowed the list of po-tential bulls by ranking them based on their total score.

Not a Bus, who they took with the 39th pick in the draft, was the eighth bull on their list. He would have been higher on the list, but her sister gave him a 3.5 because he got tan-gled up in the dummy after it was released. Cindy made sure to explain that wasn’t his fault.

“We all decided that nobody deserved a five just yet,” Cindy explained. “They’re still little and we only saw four sec-onds.”

Although he’s still developing, in Pueblo, Colo., he fin-ished fourth with 88.5 points. “I was ecstatic and so proud of him,” Cindy said, “and he’s my bull.” They will make it to both the event in Tulsa and Thackerville.

Curtis is hoping to attend the Springfield, Mo., event and the Baileys plan to attend the World Finals together.

“I think my baby’s going to do well,” Cindy said. “You can watch it on TV all day long, but you’re not going to get the adrenaline rush you get when you’re sitting there.”

-

“It looked like a great opportunity to me.”The opportunity Garrett is speaking of is the Back Seat

Buckers program. He added, “I thought, ‘If this thing turns into a big deal it’s better to buy in now rather than trying to get in later.’”

Garrett is no stranger to bull riding. As a kid he rode bulls at various amateur events, but turned pro or “chased it like (he) should have” because he was “young and wild.” He’s had bulls compete at PBR events and runs the western re-gion of the Texas Youth Bull Riding organization. However, he’s been in the truck leasing business since he was 18 years old.

“It’s just something we do,” said Garrett, whose wife San-dra is also involved. “It’s a way of life.”

He’s friends with ABBI board member Monty Samford and has anywhere from 20 to 30 bulls year-round, but said to be like two-time reigning Stock Contractor of the Year Jeff Robinson, “you need to have a lot of land and be a big time rancher.” The Back Seat Buckers program gives the Garrett

family another competitive outlet without the burden of hav-ing to raise anymore bulls.

Garrett said he had no idea what to expect, which is why they named their bull It is What it Is, and were “tickled to death” that he split 5/6 at the Pueblo, Colo., event with 88 points. While young bulls can be unpredictable he watched all the videos “night after night” in putting together a list of 10 prospective draft picks.

At the draft, which took place in Arlington, Texas, he said he began bidding when the price-range was where he thought he could get one of the 10 bulls he wanted for a price he thought it was worth. However, he said no one can teach a bull to turn back, so it was important that whichever bull he got it turned back on the video he saw.

“It is what it is,” said Garrett, who explained that bulls are like riders and will likely mature as they get older. “Everybody had the same opportunity and it just depended on how deep your pockets are you had on or how good your eye is. I don’t think we got lucky. In all reality we did our homework.”

SWEET RELIEF

BACK SEAT BUCKERS CONT.

GEORGE GOINS said something you never hear from other winners. He apologized. In Pueblo, Colo., at the first of a series of five Back Seat Buckers events, his 2-year-old bull, Booger Red Skoal, won the opening round of com-petition with 90.5 points.

“I was speechless,” he recalled afterward. “I couldn’t be-lieve I was fortunate enough to have one do so well at the event and win it. Then I felt bad that I didn’t know how to talk or anything else in front of the cameras. Then at the check reception I just completely locked up and I just didn’t have words to say.”

Goins grew up on a ranch between Andrews, Texas, and Eunice, N.M., that straddled the state line. He sold the family ranch in 1984 and took some time to himself before taking to the highways as a long distance trucker, from which he retired nine years ago.

He’s followed the PBR since the mid 90s and even tried his hand at breeding bucking bulls. He then said he “dab-bled” in the horse racing industry. “It was just something to play with and kind of feel out,” he explained, “and when (the Back Seat Buckers) popped up, I said, ‘It can’t be much dif-ferent than the horse racing other than the breed of stock.’

“I said, ‘Yeah, I’m going to jump on this.’”Prior to the bull draft in Arlington, Texas, Goins said he

watched the videos at a reception the night before and then selected 13 bulls he was interested in owning. He went back

to his room and reviewed each of the 13 videos about 30 times. He said he was looking for a bull that could leave the chute clean and turn back within one or two jumps.

“I just liked what I was seeing,” said Goins, who took his bull with the third pick in the draft. “I had already made my mind up that he was the one I was going to pick if he was available.”

Goins said he knew what it was like to have an adrena-line rush, but, in Pueblo, when he had a chance to go behind the chutes it was an entirely new experience. He had always watched an event from the stands and said he was amazed at how quiet it was behind the P.A., “You can hear yourself think.”

“I understand how the cowboys are able to do what they do,” he added, “because it’s so quiet back there you can get your thoughts together.”

Having never watched an event from that vantage point, Goins admitted that he thought Booger Red Skoal had done well, but had no idea how well or what the score would be until it was announced to the crowd over the P.A. Given he was at a loss for words, in Pueblo, when asked how he might react if he were to win the $250,000 first prize in Las Vegas, at the Finals, he said, “Well, well, ah, that would really make me lose words.”

Since being founded in November of 1998, the Rider Re-lief Fund, whose motto is “if bull riding is your life, we are your lifeline,” has awarded more than $1.4 million in assistance for injured bull riders and bullfighters.

In addition to continuing its mission through numerous donations and fundraising efforts throughout the year, the RRF will hope to substantially increase its fund with the suc-cess of Sweet Relief – the 2-year-old bull ABBI donated to the organization as part of the Back Seat Buckers program.

The aptly named Sweet Relief was among the bulls competing in Pueblo, Colo., and will be in Tulsa, Okla., and Thackerville, Okla., in August. A fourth regular-season event will take place in Springfield, Mo.

BSB pays out $25,000 per event, including $7,000 to the high-marked bull, and $250,000 to the Finals winner in Las Vegas. If Sweet Relief won a quarter million it would impact hundreds of injured cowboys’ lives.

RRF is a non-profit organization that provides financial assistance to injured athletes from the sport of bull riding, who are involved at all levels of the sport. The mission is to help injured athletes and their families with basic needs such as food, shelter and utilities during the time in which they are unable to compete.

“Please remember the Rider Relief Fund is in your will and trust,” is a saying many bull riding fans have taken to heart. So has the ABBI which is why they made a donation that could prove to be one of the largest in the history of RRF.

For more information or to follow the career of Sweet Relief, this year and beyond, log onto www.riderrelief.com. Like the ABBI and others, who have helped out over the past 14 years, “become a hero and champion in the eyes of the injured athletes when you support the mission.”

Can shepherd Hills tested Be Beat?

20U Shepherd Hills tested is a bull on just about everyone's radar this season. He started the season splitting second at the Cowtown Classic on New Year's Eve. Then he won the Classic events in OKC and Kansas City. He split sixth at Spring Fling and then headed north to win the Boise Classic and then back

down south to win Pueblo. He most recently won his hometown event in Ardmore, Okla.

The Pages have him out there and are testing this bull at every event that they can. They aren't holding him back. They are trying to make as much money as they can with him- it's a business decision that has earned them close to $50,000 already. The question now is could he go all the way?

We've already seen that he is beatable, although not many bulls have accomplished that. In Ardmore, Shepherd Hills Tested beat the second-place bull 30 Wild Card by just half a point. In Kansas City, he won by three-quarters. A point and a quarter secured his victory in both Boise and OKC. He won by a big three point lead in Pueblo.

This bull is being tested, like a great bucking bull needs to be. My hats off to the Pages for working this bull like they are, they are great bullmen. However, they are also taking a risk every time they buck him because he could injure himself or get tired and not perform as well as he could. But the Pages aren't going to play it safe. Their program traditionally produces bulls that mature early and haul well and if they think they have a potential champion, they aren't afraid to see what he's made of.

Shepherd Hills Tested has a commanding money lead with about $30,000 more money won than the number two bull. But money will just get you the Year-End Classic Champion title. Once we get to Las Vegas, the slate is wiped clean and the highest scoring 3 or 4-year-old will take home a quarter million dollars.

There are bulls right on the heels of Shepherd Hills Tested. Classic bulls like Super Cool Cat, Gonzo, Ringo, Big Stink, Ragin JT, Carney Man, Little Combat, Boyd 335, Skatman Hou, Midnight Mood, Woody and Page U36 have all placed at events already this season.

We have a great set of bulls in the 3 and 4 -year-old division and I do think there are bulls that people are holding off on until the second

half of the season. We'll see some new bulls, starting at Tulsa on, at events. There's a chance that a 3-year-old bull who could mature more this second part of the season could shake things up for the 4-year-old bulls. Scott Ac-comazzo's bull 927 Airtime that won the 3-year-old ABBI Derby in Guthrie is a good example of a young bull that could sneak into one of the top spots.

It makes no sense to me not to enter an event just because Shepherd

Hills Tested is competing. If someone has a bull that beats him, then they become a frontrunner in the Classic race. And to beat a bull of that caliber is a great achievement. It's simple, if you want to brag about your Classic bull then you need to bring him out to compete against the top bulls.

We want the best Classic bull in the world to win. Whether that comes from a member with one animal or 1,000 doesn't matter to us- what mat-ters is we get it right and that the very best bull earns that $250,000 and the gold buckle in October.

I do think this Finals will be one of our best ever. The caliber of Classic bulls is that high this year.

If Shepherd Hills Tested does come out on top, then he has prov-en himself on the road all year and shown that he has the talent- and heart- to be a champion.

this bull is being tested, like a great bucking bull needs to be. my hats off to the pages for working this bull like they are, they are great bullmen.

i wanted to share a note from aline ladouceur – owner, aCl Bucking Bulls in purcell, okla.

When we first created this column specifically focused on the Females in the Bucking Bull Industry, we were

pretty sure we were onto a hot topic. The “gentler gender” in the industry weren’t intentionally overlooked,

but this is, and always has been, a male dominated industry. I’ve heard from so many of you and received

some great questions and positive feedback!

q

q

I just wanted to let ya know that I love your article in the American Bucking Bull Magazine about women in the bucking bull industry!! I’ve been raising bulls since 2003, and my goal is to eventually have bulls good enough to get my PBR Stock Contractor’s Card and hit the road. I absolutely love the cows that I own and hopefully someday I’ll get to raise a superstar and own it’s mama!!! I love what the ABBI has done for the sport and also what Mesa Pate, a good friend of mine has done for the women in this industry!! I’m very fortunate to have some of the genetics that I own and definitely couldn’t do it without my partners! If people know me well, they know my mentors are the Page family of D&H Cattle Co....they are like family to me and I think the world of them....HD has taught me little things over the years that go a long way, from feeding to genetics, and has taught me not to give up!!! Being a single woman in this sport isn’t easy....but I wouldn’t have it any other way, I love the hard work that comes with it and over the years it has been just amazing watching some of these bulls that I’ve raised go on and do good! Makes me proud!!

Thanks,

Aline

That’s fantastic Aline and thank you for writing to me. I know you’ve been hauling your bulls to a bunch of events and from the looks of it, you’re doing a great job!

Living in an area where breeding and raising bucking bulls is common helps when it comes to learning your way

around everything that goes into producing an athlete worthy of com-peting in the arena. Aline is lucky to have friends like Mesa Pate, one of the youngest female stock contractors in the PBR and mentors like the Page family with a solid line of champions!

So, what does it take to achieve longstanding success as a woman in this industry? I thought I’d give Cindy Rosser a call to get her insight and background on how she’s become so successful!

Cindy is a woman who has now come full circle. First, she’s the daughter of the legendary Cotton Rosser so she grew up in the rodeo industry and was a successful barrel racer from the time she was a child. When she wasn’t on the back of a horse she was raising paint barrel horses where she learned the ropes on how to combine genetics to pro-duce winners.

Cindy eventually met and married Julio Moreno and they quickly acted on their strong desire to raise bucking bulls. Cindy recalls, “My dad gave us a set of F1 cross heifers. We bred them to Copenhagen One Eye then took those heifers and started breeding them, and then we had White Water and Typhoon.” Cindy and Julio were certainly a great team and as a family produced or promoted a number of world champions, Whitewater Skoal, Typhoon, Charlie Bullware, Bushwacker and Trouba-dour to name a few.

Having the love and support of her family has given Cindy a jump that many women don’t have and she’s the first to admit this is a tough industry. Now that she and Julio have divorced she is creating her own program and forging her own path. “Being a woman you’ve got to have good help and guys that respect you, I’m very lucky that I have a couple guys that help me and my dad.” Still, Rosser admitted that it’s not an easy industry to break into and loves the saying, “A woman has to work 10 times as hard but act like a lady and work like a man. It’s tough!”

Most breeders will agree, the dam is more important than the sire when creating a world class bucker and Cindy is definitely concentrating

on her females, specifically looking at what that female has produced previously. Currently she’s playing around with the Whitewater/Ty-phoon combination which is the same genetics Reindeer has and she’s put Hawaiian Ivory on her cows and is interested to see what that com-bination produces.

Deciding on the right mix of genetics can be consuming and Rosser shared that she spends many evenings thinking, “Ok, if I take this cow, what would she be best on Hawaiian Ivory, Big Mike, Reindeer, Bring It - what would be the right combination?”

She laughed, “you don’t want to breed anything to Reindeer that’s really hot because they wouldn’t be much fun to handle! Hawaiian Ivory was pretty hot as a youngster as well but he got better as he got older. On the other hand, you do want to put hot cows on Bring It or Big Mike because they tend to be lackadaisical.”

Out of all the champion buckers Rosser has had her personal favor-ite is Bring It. “He tickles me the most because he’s happy go lucky and goes out and does his job.” Cindy laughs, “He’s 10 years old and still bucking guys off even though he’s fat!”

Although Bring It has had over 100 outs, if he starts showing any signs of being weary, Cindy is ready to pull him. “Reindeer, Werewolf and Hawaiian Ivory all had close to 100 outs,” she states, “it’s pretty remark-able when a bull can last that long and keep on bucking.”

Worrying about your animal superstars is just like worrying about your child and Cindy takes that aspect very seriously. Every year Rosser is asked to bring Reindeer Dippin to the Finals because people want to

see him! However, Reindeer himself doesn’t particularly like Las Vegas and he doesn’t eat when he’s there although Cindy brings his favorite food and goes out of the way to give him special care. He doesn’t sleep well and within a couple of days looks drawn and becomes very cranky. There’s a lot more to these athletes than meets the eye and making sure they are properly cared for is a huge responsibility.

Having raised and campaigned so many champion bulls, all with dif-ferent personalities is quite an accomplishment and putting bulls that get along well with each other is key. You’ve got to put bulls in a pen that get along. They get tired and cranky just like the rest of us.

When asked what her favorite career moment was, Rosser paused a moment and then answered, “When I won in Santa Maria on a Werewolf son.” She then continued, “it was pretty cool because I won the Classic and Katie Parker’s bull won the Maturity!” Women took the top spots at Santa Maria and it was Cindy’s first win with a bull that she produced all on her own. Stated Cindy, “The deal in Santa Maria was really pretty cool but I must say, when Troubadour won (ABBI Classic Champion)…that was pretty special too.”

As more women become involved in this industry, the biggest ob-stacle of simply being a woman will become diminished. Today there are some men who flat out won’t deal with women but times are chang-ing and women are not always just a partner to a successful man. Still, although Cindy has achieved a tremendous amount of success on her own, she gives credit to her dad, “if it wasn’t for my dad I couldn’t do any of this.”

the American Bucking Bull q las Vegas 2012 43

Page 44: The American Bucking Bull Magazine - July/Aug Issue

2012 ABBi lAS VegAS World FinAlS

Who will be the next 3 or 4-year-old bull crowned Clas-sic champion? Big Deal, Stray Kitty, God’s Gift, Trou-badour, Crosswired, Black Pearl, Bushwacker and Back Bender have all claimed the title in the past and

any qualified bull could take it in Las Vegas. Shepherd Hill Tested is having an outstanding season, but the Finals $250,000 prize comes down to which top bull performs the best over two rounds in the pressure cooker of Thomas & Mack Arena with the bright lights, pyro and adrenaline that can affect both man and beast. The bulls will also be up against the best bull riders the world has to offer.

Stray Kitty, Crazy Train, Comet’s Gold, Deja Blu, Copp Hou, Pure Smoke, Ragin JT and Jungle Smoke have written their names in the record book as the best Futurity bulls. The next 2-year-old to secure his owner a gold buckle and $100,000 won’t be known until October 25 when the South Point Arena reveals which bull was destined for greatness this season.

Our members age 9-18 will also be testing their skills along-side their bulls for the Junior Futurity. Held in conjunction with the Futurity Finals, junior members will be on the chutes flanking their bulls next to some of the legends of the industry, as they take their shot at becoming the Junior Futurity Champion.

The arena action at South Point will start on October 23 with the first Back Seat Buckers World Finals. This will be the inau-gural event for this dynamic program that has enticed everyone from retired truck drivers to world-class athletes to become stock contractors. This will be the fifth and final event of the Back Seat Buckers first season and will payout $250,000 to the bull that does the best. All 100 bulls will buck at South Point and the Top 5 will then move on to a championship round at Thomas & Mack on Oc-tober 25.

The PBR’s Heroes & Legends Reunion will also be taking place at South Point on October 23-24. This is an opportunity to meet the cowboys who have made history and see some legend-ary bulls up close. In order to give everyone a chance to attend the dinner, the Back Seat Buckers Futurity will start at 7pm.

The ABBI Classic Wild Card will be held at South Point on Oc-tober 24 to give bulls a last chance of moving onto the Classic Finals.Bulls who come out of this event in the Top 5 will really have to prove themselves- they buck again the next day. Anyone who thinks that the Wild Card is the easy way to slide into a cov-eted Classic Finals slot better better think again and the bulls will have to bring their “A” game. The event will be broken up into a morning and late afternoon performance.

The Classic bulls will be center stage at Thomas & Mack on October 25 when they go head-to-head against the cowboys who have qualified to be there during Round Two of the PBR World Finals. The top Classic animals will return on October 27 to fight it out for the title during Round Four of the PBR World Finals

On Friday, October 26 the first Lifetime Derby will take place. This program was started in June and allowed any stock contrac-tor to buy a lifetime spot at an annual Derby event. Limited to 50 animals, the first event will be held at South Point with $100,000 going to the animal who earns highest marks from the judges.

After the success of the inaugural event last season, a Ma-turity Claimer is also on the Finals line-up for October 27. This event will award big money to the man or woman willing to take a chance at both victory and defeat. The original owner of the champion takes the prize purse but can also lose their animal if a claim has been made for the bull prior to the event starting. Like last year, if more than one person bids for an animal, there will be a tense card-cutting conducted arena side by a South Point dealer to see who the animal’s new owner will be before he bucks.

After a week of competition, by the evening of October 27 around $1.5 million dollars will have been paid out to ABBI mem-bers. new bulls will have risen above their competitors, and stock contractors and their programs’ bloodlines will have proven that they have what it takes to compete against the best in the world.

55 gunslinger

When it comes to proven producers it’s easy to present Gunslinger with his stripes. Going through the genetic component of the event recaps is always interesting to me. During that phase of this issue, I was really impacted by the enormity of winners that have Gunslinger DNA running through their veins.

Gunslinger has obviously had a huge impact on today’s winners. The real intriguing thing to me is that he’s a big sire survivor through generational skip. With sons like Lucky Strike, Neon Nights and Up In Smoke consistently making paternal leaps, Gunslinger’s power is being bolded.

Gunslinger was unquestionably a legend in the arena and his numerous awards will always be available for reflection. Still, what he’s doing as a sire, grand-sire and great-grand-sire is even more monumental and better yet doesn’t require any dusting!

Take a good look at his stats, his offspring’s stats in the arena and in the production pen and you will quickly become a fan of one of the most historical buckers in the past, and one of the most aggressive sires of the present.

DaViD BaileY

David Bailey has been deeply engrained in the world of rodeo for over 40 years. Whether it’s his broncs and bares, his top-notch bucking bulls or rolling up his sleeves and wearing a committee label, he’s one contractor that has woven his way into the core of the industry.

The numerous awards Bailey and his stock have won and the accomplishments that he’s gathered over his career are truly impressive. The quality and respect the David Bailey Rodeo name has become noted for is probably the best of his accomplishments (in my opinion)—and with that name comes a mountain of memories of spectacular bull power.

Bull’s like Gunslinger, Playboy, and their prodigal sons Lucky Strike and Super Cool just scratch the surface of what Bailey has brought the industry—and what these bulls are doing as sires and grand-sires is what really rules the roost for me. I’ve enjoyed looking back and seeing their influence in today’s ABBI winners and I hope after this Blast from the Past you will to.

In the American Bucking Bull’s series Blast from the Past, veterans of the sport both human and bovine are remembered and reflected upon. These are men who inspired and improved the sport of bull riding that we know today, and bulls that earned notoriety in the arena and have gone on to become founda-tional in the American Bucking Bull breed. These are the men and bulls that today’s sport have been

stimulated by.

In this Blast from the Past, we remember one of the industry’s core breeders and contractors, David Bailey of Fort Gibson, Oklahoma, and one of the truest bull legends of the registry, 55 Gunslinger.

Aaron Halpain, son of Jerry and Tracy Halpain in 13 years old and lives in Peggs, Oklahoma. He goes to school at Peggs El-ementary, and will be in the 8th grade this upcoming school year.

If you are familiar with the ABBI Junior Futurities then Aaron Halpain is a name that should sound very familiar. He has been participation in the Junior’s for the past four years, and every year has won a lot of cash. His family, (JATT Bucking Bulls) has also been great members of the ABBI and competes in other competitions where their bulls are once again noticed. Aaron competed in 2009 with his bull Buck-ing Nightmare that won him $1,980.45. The next year he had an even better bucker, and he finished the 2010 season with $5,849.45. Aaron’s bulls just keep getting better because in 2011 him and Wild Willie won $12,650.40. This year his bull in Can’t be Touched, and we expect to see more money won from Aaron again this year. He will be competing in the rest of the Junior Futurities this year. Currently, Aaron is the one to beat. He is sitting in first place right now in the overall standings.

Aaron loves being on the Ranch and working his bulls with his Dad. He doesn’t really have a lot of other hobbies because he is so busy help-

ing his Dad raise great buckers, and its shows. His favorite thing about being part of the ABBI and participating in junior events is the oppor-tunity to make lots of money and meet new people. He likes being able to have his very own bulls and likes when they do well, and win. Aaron’s bloodlines are some of the best. Right now he and his Dad are using, Houdini, Snark, Pandemonium, Skat Kat, Neon Nights, Smooth Move, and Hotel California. He would like to add his all time favorite PBR bull to his breeding program, Asteroid.

We greatly appreciate JATT Bucking Bull’s support in spon-soring the Junior Futurities this season. We would not be able to do it without the sponsors. Thank you to all the participants as well, it really makes for a great experience with all of the support from our breeders. Good luck to you in Claremore, Aaron! Thank you for your continued effort in the ABBI Junior Futurities.

This will be my last junior column, I am going to be writing some other stories and doing other things for the magazine. A new junior will assume this role, thank you guys for taking time to read my columns! Hannah Gant

temperature Humidity index (tHi)To understand how to beat heat stress we need to understand when

it becomes a problem. The temperature humidity index (THI) will help us to know when your bulls are suffering from heat stress. The figures in table 1 show how temperature and relative humidity influence THI. When THI is at or below 74, conditions are considered normal and heat stress is not an issue. When THI is between 74 and 79 mild heat stress is occurring. A THI of 79 to 84 means heat stress is beginning to influence performance. With a THI of 84 or above, severe heat stress is occurring and measures should be taken to insure performance.

Table 1

AS WE HEAD INTO THE DOG DAYS OF SUMMER WE NEED TO UNDERSTAND THE BEST WAYS TO BEAT THE HEAT AND KEEP YOUR BULLS PERFORMING AT THEIR OPTI-MUM LEVELS. ALTHOUGH WE HAVE NOT DONE STUD-IES TO QUALIFY THE EFFECTS OF HEAT STRESS ON

BUCKING BULLS, WE ALL KNOW THAT APPETITE IS SUPPRESSED, BULLS BECOME FATIGUED AND PERFORMANCE SUFFERS. IN THE U.S. LIVESTOCK INDUSTRY, HEAT STRESS IS RESPONSIBLE FOR HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS OF DOLLARS IN LOST PRODUCTION EACH YEAR.

Water supplyIn the summer, water intake can double

for your bulls. (See Table 2) Make sure that bulls have adequate access to cool, clean water. Water supply should be kept between 70-86º F. It is also critical to make sure water buck-ets or troughs are kept clean of manure, mud and algae.

shade and CoolingProviding shade reduces the amount of radiant heat your bulls

receive from the sun. Recommendations range from 6 to 10 feet of shade per animal. If metal is used for overhead shading, it should either be insulated or high enough not to become a heat genera-tor itself. Fans and misters can be very effective in the reduction of heat stress. Placement of these tools is critical to maximize their ef-fects. Placing these cooling devises close to where you feed and water will create a comfortable environment that will help with feed and water intake.

Handling and exerciseMake sure that any handling or exercise is done early in the morn-

ing to avoid activity adding to heat load. This will allow the bulls to cool back down before they have to deal with the heat of the day. Try to avoid activity where bulls are crowded together. Their own body heat will generate out to other animals next to them creating an additional source of heat stress.

Restrict exercise and handling to morning to allow bulls time to relax during the heat of the day

DietRation changes during the summer are

essential to maintain optimal performance. These changes are needed to account for lower feed intake. If you do not experience a decrease in your bull’s feed intake no changes should be made. Adjusting the forage to concentrate ratio has been shown to be beneficial to make the diet more energy dense. Care should be taken to avoid digestive upsets such as acido-sis. Changing to a higher concentrate, more energy dense diet should be done slowly and not taken to extremes; a good balance of for-age and concentrate should be maintained to insure proper rumen function.

Other aspects of the diet should be exam-ined as well, such as electrolytes and mineral levels. Electrolytes play a key role in keeping the bulls hydrated at a cellular level. Electro-lyte nutrition is important for muscle function and must be administered before a problem develops. There are many electrolytes that are available on the market but most were devel-oped for horses or calves. Make sure if you are using these products to make adjustments in feeding levels to meet the requirements of the size of your bulls, or look for a product that has been developed for bulls. Mineral nutri-tion should also be increased to account for decreases in dry matter intake. As we have discussed in the past, the bioavailability of the minerals should also be considered.

summaryTo beat the dog days of summer and the effects of heat stress, first understand it by knowing about THI. Make sure that your bulls have adequate

access to plenty of cool, clean, fresh water. Take advantage of shade, fans and other cooling devises to make your bull’s environment as comfortable as possible. Restrict exercise and handling to the morning to allow the bulls time to relax in the heat of the day. Make small changes in the bull’s diet to make them more nutrient dense to make up for decreases in intake.

WHILE ATTENDING THE AMERICAN HERITAGE EVENT IN EDMOND, I OB-SERVED A NUMBER OF YOUNG BULLS THAT AP-

PEARED TO HAVE NUMEROUS SKIN LE-SIONS ON THEIR BODIES, SOME FROM HEAD TO TAIL. I THOUGHT THIS MIGHT BE A GOOD THING TO DISCUSS SINCE WE DON’T USUALLY SEE MANY SKIN LESIONS IN BUCKING STOCK.

Ringworm is a very common problem to see in calves occurring shortly after weaning, and lesions can stay for 45 days to as long as 100 days. Ringworm is caused by a spore form-ing fungi called Trichophyton verrucosum. The spores, which are produced by the mature organism, can reside in the environment for years in the right circumstances (cool and dry), and remain infective for long periods of time. However, the most common means of infection is from one individual to the next.

The fungus may also be spread by inani-mate objects such as equipment used on an infected animal, bedding and even flanks and ropes. Older animals are susceptible as well when their immune function is compromised. When this problem is observed in yearling cattle or older individuals, questions should be raised as to what may be compromising im-mune function; climate stress, improper nutri-tion, disease exposure, etc.

The lesions we actually see when there is ringworm infection are due to fungal spores in-vading the hair shaft and follicle and surround-ing skin. With this infection, an inflammatory process occurs with secondary inflammation thus the lesions exude a serum like substance that combines with skin and hair debris creat-ing a scab. The infection starts centrally and radiates outward, thus giving the rounded ap-pearance. These areas appear raised above the skin and are off white in color. (See images 2, 3 and 4)

In older infections the scab will fall off leaving a bare depressed round area, thus giv-ing the name ringworm. By the time you see these rounded bare areas the infection has been eliminated, although they could still be infective from residual spores.

Treatment of ringworm infection is lim-ited in beef type cattle to topical product ap-plication, although there is a vaccine available. There is some controversy whether the vaccine is effect and helpful. Numerous home remedies

is there a fungus among us? Photos by Sugar Kuhn

Ringworm is most frequent on the head and neck but may be found all over the body in severe cases.

Ringworm spores germinate and attack the shafts of the hair and the surface layers of skin causing a raised circular appearance.

Ringworm spreads from the center outwards and results in a circular lesion. Lesions ooze and mix

with debris forming a crusty scab.

are recognized for application to the lesion: mineral oil, glue, paint, bendazole paste worm-ers, dilute iodine, certain regional treatments such as red clay, used motor oil, etc. Really, I think most anything applied is probably too late once `the lesion is recognized as the ani-mal has probably already dealt with and elimi-nated it.

Those animals with generalized infection probably should be treated to lessen contami-nation to the environment and other animals. I like to use a dilute tamed iodine compound for treatment, being careful not to expose the animal to direct sunlight for a period of time af-ter treatment. Too much of the iodine product combined with too intensive sunlight might lead to a sunburn type event particularly on light skinned animals.

Once again I want to mention that if you see an outbreak of ringworm in a herd of cat-tle some questions should be raised as to the overall health of the entire group. Ringworm is ubiquitous in the environment and healthy individuals should be able to eliminate the in-fection when exposure occurs. Thus questions should be raised about the overall management within the group.

Direct contact with an infected animal is the most common method of spreading the infection.

Scabs fall off leaving a ring with grey, hairless center.

The American Bucking Bull q July/Aug 2012 67

Page 68: The American Bucking Bull Magazine - July/Aug Issue

the American Heritage is one of the most important events of the entire ABBi season. the annual event moved to guthrie, okla. this year, allowing over 200 animals to be housed inside the air conditioned Lazy e Arena.

Besides providing a world-class facility, Lazy e co-produced the event with ABBi. Lazy e director of events robert simpson and ABBi executive director Kaycee simpson worked closely together to ensure the best possible experience for the animals and the stock contractors. ABBi sponsor priefert brought in a record-setting number of pens- it was the most priefert pens ever used at an event and it required three semi trucks to get them all there.

there was a derby, maturity, Futurity and Junior Futurity event held over the two-days of competition, with well over half a million in prize money being awarded. the Futurity co-champions took home over $82,000 apiece and bragging rights for a year. wolf creek cattle generously stepped up to sponsor the Junior event and the youth members were thrilled to compete alongside the Futurity competitors.

the weekend kicked off on thursday, June 14 with a social and a calcutta at the Lazy e ropers cantina where phillip mccormick was the big bidder and ultimately the big calcutta winner at the conclusion of the event. the morning of June 15 started early with a breakfast and seminar sponsored by Qualitech, another amazing ABBi sponsor.

the American Bucking Bull magazine's own columnist and industry leader dr. gary warner spoke at the seminar, helping to further educate members on the diseases and problems that can occur in the hooves of our animal athletes. ropers cantina also played host each evening to members looking to unwind after the event.

Big tex trailers generously provided the Back seat Buckers custom trailer which was driven to oklahoma to be on display- a great conversa-tion piece for fans in attendance and a reminder that the 2013 Back seat Buckers bulls will be on sale shortly.

J.W. HART CALLED IT THE BEST BULL SALE IN THE WORLD AND CORD MCCOY SAID IT WILL LIKELY SET THE REST OF THE BULL MAR-KET FOR THE NEXT 10 MONTHS.

For the Page family, who have been in the bucking bull industry for more than 30 years, the D&H Cattle Company Bred to Buck Bull

& Female Sale is their annual event in which they sell yearling bulls with proven pedigree and females that, according to the sale catalog, “come right out of the heart of the herd.”

This year’s top sale brought in $42,000 for half-interest in Page 113Y, which is a Mud-slinger son out of a Backlash daughter. Page added that the yearling also goes back to the dam of Western Wishes.

“This calf has Mudslinger and Western Wishes top to bottom all the way back through his pedigree,” Page said. “Those two bulls were raised up together and it’s a pretty neat deal, those bulls hated each other.”

Page credited opportunities through the ABBI and the PBR – futurity and classic events – as a “big wheel” in keeping D&H Cattle at the forefront of the industry. He added, “As long as

we can show that our animals can perform at that level then it helps us sell these females.”

This year’s sale brought in a total of $699,100 for an average of $5,504.72 for the 127 lots, which included 39 yearling bulls and 88 cows.

The yearling bulls brought in $390,050 compared to $309,511.93 for more than twice as many cows. In contrast to one another the bulls averaged $10,001 per sale, which was nearly three times that of the $3,511.93 aver-age per sale for the cows.

“I’m tickled to see the interest in the busi-ness,” H.D. Page said afterward, when asked to comment on the variety of purchasers from within and outside the industry. “You would think the deal would get old, but you’re adren-aline just keeps pumping. These calves, when you raise one like that, it gives you new energy, new life and a new outlook on things. It kind

of keeps you pumped up about your business.“The PBR has done a lot over the years for

the enthusiasm of the fans and keeping our deal rolling. We’re sure thankful for that.”

After more than 10 years, it’s become more than a sale.

Page called it an event. They began Friday evening by bucking

their sale bulls followed by an ABBI sanctioned futurity event that night. The sale, which took just over four hours to complete, was Saturday afternoon followed by the WinStar World Ca-sino Touring Pro Classic.

The sale took place at the Red River Live-stock Auction barn in Overbrook, Okla., while the bull riding event was in nearby Ardmore at the Hardy Murphy Coliseum.

This year’s sale was streamed live on the Internet, but Page said he recommends those who haven’t experienced a live auction in-per-

son to make plans for next. However, he recog-nizes it might not be for everyone.

“People are in and out of the business all the time,” he said. “Some people thought they wanted to raise cows and raise calves off of bucking cows and then they figure out later, well, we’ll just go buy a couple two year olds, three year olds and just get right in and play with something like that. It is a lot of work, but if you enjoy the work it is a pretty reward-ing business. That’s what this production sale is about. It doesn’t appeal to everybody and not everybody wants to be a cowboy and riding a horse every day.

“There (are) options for everybody and that’s the neat thing about it,” Page continued. “You can get in on yearling bulls or you can get in on the cows and start from the ground up.”

From the banks of the Washita, to the bright lights of the PBR and then back home again for his retirement and ultimate death in Oklaho-ma, Mudslinger has completed a nostalgic life-loop. He was dearly loved by fans, deeply appreciated by riders and immeasurably treasured by his owners. The genetic contribution Mudslinger has made to his owners' program and the entire bucking bull industry makes his loop in life one that will never end.

Even a completely unbiased assessment of the bovine’s career could conclude nothing but this: He was a true bovine legend. There are very few bovines his caliber and even fewer with his sort of longevity, consis-tency and heart. The triple-play of his career is the amount of times he performed without fail. Review of his probullstats and the ABBI database finds him to be unquestionably one of the greatest bucking bulls to grace four legs.

Not only was he one of the most honest and rider-friendly buckers in the arena, but he has also risen to historical levels as a producing sire, second only to Houdini in all time producing sires in the ABBI's DNA database.

The respected bovine, initially called Washita Mudslinger, earned his hefty handle on the banks of the Washita River that winds its way through the Page ranch just outside Ardmore, Oklahoma. It is where the Super Dave grandson cultivated his charismatic persona. During his 15 years of life, the dark red, brindle spent many hours lounging on the river’s red dirt banks. More importantly, Mudslinger was a master at slinging its mud.

Along the way the bovine went from young gun to big gun, and he did it without fault out after out. His consistency and charisma ul-

timately brought sponsors calling and before long the bull’s signature “Washita” label was replaced with that of Mossy Oak.

It took the bucker six years of competitive prowess and unwavering reliability on the upper echelon of the PBR tour to achieve the award he so definitely deserved. In 2006 at the road-savvy age of 10, the Okla-homa-bred bovine was no longer a bridesmaid in the game of bucking bull notoriety. After several years as the PBR’s runner-up to the World Champion Bucking Bull, 2006 finally shone on Mudslinger and he got his recognition through the achievement of the actual title.

Although the beloved bovine’s life is regretfully over, what remains unterminated in the bovine’s life-loop is his super-sturdy DNA. His sons and daughters have already made significant industry strides, and these strides made are the continuous life-loop in Mudslinger’s connectivity to our industry.

"In my opinion Mudslinger is the epitome of what a bucking bull should be. He became a bull rider’s favorite day in and day out. He was an honest competitor. He gave riders every chance to be 90 plus. From the way he’d stand in the chute to what he’d do when they threw the gate. He’s absolutely irreplaceable to us. When we retired him, he was irreplaceable as a bucking bull, but now that he’s gone, he’s irreplace-able as a sire. He’s a bull that did more for our program and our entire family than anything else. He was absolutely instrumental in our con-tractor of the year titles and played an enormous role in our breeding program.” H.D. Page

"Mudslinger was one of the greatest bulls of all time. Everybody liked him and everybody wanted to draw him. From the time he’d run into the

chutes, he gave you a fair shot—every time. If you did your job, you’d win, but if you made a mistake, you'd be on the ground.” —Greg Potter "In my career, I have never, ever seen a bull as good as that bull. Even on bad days, he was still good. He's been a great bull. There have been ranker bulls out there, but it still comes back to the point that he was THE bull riders wanted to get on.” —Cody Lambert

“He was a part of our family, and he's a big reason we are where we are today. I'll always have enormous respect for him because of that." —Dillon Page

Bull notes: Justin McBride clung to Camo to capture his first world title in 2005 and also rode him at the 2007 PBR World Finals for 92.50 to nab his second world title. For four years, Camo had a hand in determining who won the PBR World Title.

Brad Boyd and Toby Floyd announced the passing of Camo on Tues-day, May 29.

According to Boyd, Camo had been in the pasture breeding just days before passing away. He was laid to rest next to the mothers of Reindeer Dippin and Copenhagen Lite – AN11 and AN160 – at their ranch outside Stephenville, Texas.

“It’s sad,” Boyd said. “You don’t ever want to put a champ down like that. … You want to put it off, but you know the bull doesn’t deserve the pain he’s in, so you make the decision to do it.”

Boyd, who was noticeably saddened when contacted, said Camo’s passing wasn’t unexpected, but that it was still an emotional day for ev-eryone involved with their bucking bull operation.

“When they asked me where I wanted to bury him that made me upset,” he said.

Boyd and Floyd Bull Co. purchased Camo from Paradise Farms and immediately he made an impact on the Built Ford Tough Series.

He had 72 career outs, all of which were in the PBR, and 56 of those were on the BFTS.

He was ridden in only 11 of 56 outs for an average of 88 points and three times riders won the round. Judges marked him an average of 44.73 points per out, which is only slightly off his average of 44.83 points in his 72 career outings, and 11 times he was the high-marked bull of the round.

According to www.probullstats.com, Camo was equally stout against right handed riders as he was lefties. He bucked off 83 percent of the left handed riders he faced versus 79 percent of the right-handers.

“He brought Boyd & Floyd to the table,” Boyd said. “He was our

gunner. He was our champ.”

Boyd added, “Bulls like him are one in 30,000. If you can find a bull that has half the heart as he had, right there, then you have a su-perstar. He was a megastar.

“He’s a great bull. That’s all there is to it.”No single rider is more associated with Camo than two-time World

Champion Justin McBride.Needing any score to win his first world title in 2005, McBride rode

Camo in the final round of the World Finals, clinging to the side. It was an ugly 75-pointer, but it was enough.

He also rode Camo in the final round of the 2007 World Finals for 92.5 points to win his second world title.

Boyd said he’s proud of the fact that for four years running – 2005 to 2008 – Camo had a hand in who won or lost the world title.

He last competed, in 2008, at the Finals when Robson Palermo rode him for 87 points to win the Finals event for the first time.

Although they have yet to be named, Boyd & Floyd Bull Co. have a few of Camo’s three-year old sons. They will likely make their debut next season in the ABBI Classic competition as four year olds.

“His legacy is going to live on,” Boyd said.

It is with more great sadness that we say goodbye to yet another instrumental industry insider. Stan “Granddad” Dandy, partner in Sis ‘N’ Stan Bucking Bulls of Madera, California, passed away on Saturday, May 12, 2012.

The 71-year-old native of North Fork, California was a life-long resident of Madera County. Dandy was the Vice Chair of the North Fork Mono Indian Tribe and especially loved being a bull breeder and PBR bull contractor with his wife of 31 years, Frances.

He is remembered as one of Frances’ biggest encouragers and sup-porters when it came to getting involved with buckers. The couples big-league bulls like; Zip Code (PBRF), Airwolf, Little Aloha, Battle Axe, Kahuna, Drunk Monkey, Paintball, Swamp Boy, Hat Trick, Josey Wales, Haywire, Spanky, 31 Yellowjacket, LBJ and Blueberry Crush are just a few of the bovines from the Dandy’s that have risen to acclaim.

The duo’s generosity is also noted with Stan and Frances’ loving mentorship and backing of the ABBI’s Junior Breeder Program over the past several years—specifically its World Finals competition in Las Ve-gas.

Stan Dandy is survived by wife Frances, daughter Brenda Lavell, her daughters Hannah, Stevie and Sveva of Clovis, his son Bertram Lavell, Jr. and his daughter Brittney of Fresno, two brothers Charles Dandy of Madera, Clifford Silvas of Tule River and two sisters Dorothy Dandy and Anna Dandy both of North Fork.

Funeral services were held on Friday, May 18 in North Fork.Remembrances may be made to: Rider Relief Fund, 101 W. River-

walk, Pueblo, CO 81003. In memory of: Stan Dandy of Sis ‘N’ Stan Buck ‘N’ Bulls.

about sis & stan Bucking Bulls and frances and stan Dandy

Frances Dandy is no stranger to a western lifestyle or generos-ity. Both ranching and sharing her fortitude with others stems from a lengthy heritage that’s rooted deeply on the west coast. Dandy’s grand-father was the first white man to settle in a central California valley that today boasts the family’s surname, Burrough.

Dandy’s father Lester was taught ranching by his father and also ranched in nearby Watts Valley. The practice of passing on the tradition of ranching remained as Burroughs leaned on Dandy

to help maintain the family’s western endeavors after her siblings moved away.

When Dandy’s father passed away in 2002 she found herself retreating from life not wanting to interact with anyone. Her late husband Stan took her to a bucking bull sale in Oakdale and placed a buyer’s number in her hand. Stan encouraged her to buy some bulls and reminded her, “it is something your dad would love to see you doing.”

The outing was the starting point for what is now known as Sis and Stan Bucking Bulls, a name derived from Dandy’s nickname, Sis, and her late husband’s name, Stan.

In a twist of fate when Dandy sat with that first buyer’s number in her hand, stockman and rodeo icon Cotton Rosser came and sat right next to her. He eventually struck up a conversation with her and encouraged her to get into the business. Rosser seemed like a God-send and reminded Dandy of her own father and his brother, and ultimately became a great friend and constant mentor.

Cindy Rosser and Julio Moreno invited Dandy to visit and look at some young bulls. During the visit Dandy purchased Air Wolf, a son of Werewolf that bucked in this past year’s World Cup.

Along the way, the Dandys also purchased bulls from Bud Gib-son and Tom Teague.

“Tom and Penny are just super great people and they have really encouraged me. I got my first buckle from Tom after he invited me to his sale in Bastrop, Texas. I had a super time out there and ended up buying a lot of stuff.”

Dandy’s father remains the driving force behind her love for these bovine athletes.

“That’s one reason I enjoy doing this so much, because I know this is something he would have really enjoyed doing and partici-pating in.”

Nobody seems more sure than Dandy herself that her bucking bull destiny was written in the stars.

“After that sale in Bastrop we were walking on what I call the plank looking down over all the cattle. I looked up in the sky and there was a cloud formation of what looked like a bull’s head with the moon shining right through what would be his eyes. I figured it was a sign about where our start would be. That is where everything kicked off and I told grand-dad ‘we’ll just keep moving forward with this then until the Lord says that’s enough’”.

Dandy’s mother seems to be the driving force behind her gener-osity which has filtered down to the ABBI Junior Breeder Program. The Dandy’s have been one of the program’s biggest financial sup-porters over the past several years. Their support spans further than monetary and their belief in today’s western youth are well noted.

“My mother was born and raised here at Table Mountain and it gives me great pleasure to be able to share some of what she and God have blessed me with. So, when I was talking with Cody Lam-bert about getting bulls into an event and he told me about the Junior Breeder program, I told him that I’d love to be a donor! My two children are grown and in their 40s now but both were in 4-H and FFA so I really get excited about kids. If I can help a child, I am very happy to do it and look forward to continuing to support the Junior Breeder program.”
