The Exalted Ruler’s Message

As the train pulls out of the station this month, we are all aware that fall is upon us. We have all had a very busy summer but now the work really begins. Our DDGER North, John Montgomery has been challenged by DDGER South, Andrew Murdock, in a membership drive. The south believes that they can get more new members and reinstatements than we can. I need all of your help so we don’t loose the challenge. You all must know of at least one person that is worthy of becoming an Elk member. Please help us “grow our membership”.

Please check our list of members that have not renewed their membership. Maybe you know one of them. Give them a call and invite them back into our lodge. The list is on the bulletin board next to the pool room. We must not let our members stray. Please do your part to keep our membership up. Very shortly, all members will be receiving our annual “Silver Towers Camp for Exceptional People” raffle tickets. We have had a 35% return on these tickets in the past. Let’s strive for 100% or at least close to that this year. Remember, it is our state project. If you didn’t attend our Family Day picnic, you surely missed out on one great day of Elkdom. BITS & PIECES

• Last week my mother in law was invited to lunch. She quickly slathered on some lipstick, grabbed a can of hair spray and did that circle around her head that women do. Now this doesn’t sound like big news until you know that instead of hairspray, she grabbed the can of Lysol Basin, Tub, & Tile Cleaner! When she realized that the scrubbing bubbles couldn’t tell the difference between her head and porcelain she took evasive action, blotting the little bug-gers off her head. Fortunately for her she has an understanding son-in law who went out and purchased her a new “Johnny Mop/Hair Brush, with the lament “It’s too bad your eyesight isn’t keener, you’d ne’er use Basin, Tub & Tile Cleaner. • John Hill stabbed himself in the thigh with a #2 pencil. His co-workers gave him a “Barbie” band-aid to staunch the bleeding. Very cute, I’m sure. • Speed demon Barney Lilley was sitting at a stop light when he got rear ended. The force knocked him into the car ahead of him. Aren’t you supposed to keep your foot on the brake? • It was reported that on Family Day some of our older officers held a contest to see who had the most false teeth. While that has since been debunked, I couldn’t help but wonder what type of activities we could provide for our senior members. The margarita mixing con-test. Each contestant would get 1/2 full glass of margarita mix and the first one to shake their’s to a head without moving their arms would win. Another competition that’s sure to be a big hit is bobbing for apples ( without dentures, of course ). The prune eating contest, ear hair comparison (men), mustache competition (women), and the walker toss. Events that were nixed by the ER include the wet t-shirt competition (men’s & women’s), and the De-pends changing contest. Also the naked co-ed twister. • Congratulations to Emily Miles and Andrew Plunkett on their new employments. Andrew is at Gustin Advertising in Massachusetts, and Emily is at The Shelburne Fitness Arena.

There are many volunteers whom you see at every event day in and day out. There are also many volunteers you don’t see doing their own contribution to the lodge in many different ways. Have you noticed the freshly painted shutters on our lodge? Thank you, Jim Brousseau for a job well done. Do you every won-der how we get our weekly supply of spirits? Don Sawyer quietly does the run for us. How about every Monday night at our Bingo Hall when Dave Blankemeyer can always count on his weekly, faithful staff of Ollie Howard, Bob Steele, Jim Procopio, Barry Griffin and Cookie Manning. Oh, by the way, did you know that Mary Richard, one of our own Silver Tower campers often helps Richard Schmidt set up the tables for Steak Night? Keep up the good work. You are all very much appreciated! Diane Hazen Exalted Ruler

THREE CORKS by Brother Matthew Engels

There are many parallels between the Boy Scouts of America and the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks. Both groups integrate the concept of community service deep within the substance of their organization; and both groups realize that relentless recruiting is inte-gral to the survival or their organization.

Lord Robert Baden-Powell, creator of the BSA, while never an Elk, borrowed heavily from the Freemasons, another fraternal organi-zation when developing his rituals and structures of leadership both within the BSA and his honor camping group, the Order of the Ar-row. On his return from fighting in Africa in 1903, Baden-Powell found that his military training manual, Aids to Scouting, had be-come a best-seller, and was being used by teachers and youth organi-zations. Following his involvement in the Boys' Brigade as Brigade Secretary and Officer in charge of its scouting section, with encour-agement from his friend, William Alexander Smith, Baden-Powell decided to rewrite Aids to Scouting to suit a youth readership. In Au-gust 1907 he held a camp on Brownsea Island for twenty-two boys of mixed social background to test out the applicability of his ideas. Baden-Powell was also influenced by Ernest Thompson Seton, who founded the Woodcraft Indians. Seton gave Baden-Powell a copy of his book The Birch Bark Roll of the Woodcraft Indians and they met in 1906. Scouting for Boys was subsequently published in six install-ments in 1908.

The BPOE’s involvement in Scouting has been a long one, as a Charter organization and until 2006, the Elks provided a scholarship for select Eagle Scouts under the auspices of the Elks National Foun-dation. In 2006, the ENF awarded its last Eagle Scout Scholarship with the BPOE Board of Trustees deciding to discontinue funding for the two Scouts scholarship programs, in favor of increasing funding for our own Most Valuable Student program. This new program does not preclude the participation of Eagle Scouts, as all Boy Scouts that meet the Most Valuable Student eligibility criteria are able to apply. Additionally, the Elks provide an award to BSA adult leaders called the “Marvin S. Lewis Award” named after a PGER who advocated Scouting’s relationship with the BPOE.

There are many youth programs that parallel the BSA. The Elks themselves operating groups such as the Antlers program currently being restarted by the Burlington Lodge is similar to the BSA’s Ven-ture Crew program which was originally known as the BSA Explor-ers. According to the official Venture Crew website “What a Ventur-ing crew does is limited only by the imagination and involvement of the adult and youth leaders and members of the crew: sail the Carib-bean, produce a play, climb a mountain, teach disabled people to swim, or attend the Olympics. All these adventures and many more are being done today by Venturing crews and ships across the coun-try.” A parallel membership in a Venture Crew along with other youth memberships provides opportunities to participate in high ad-venture activities under the auspices of the Boy Scouts of America including the use of their facilities and camps.

The Boy Scouts of America’s slogan is “Do A Good Turn Daily.” What represents the goals of the BPOE more than this? To serve oth-ers is one of the BPOE’s stated goals as well.

WOW!!! That sums up the Family Day we had this year. Fantastic weather, GREAT family attendance, food, beverages, entertain-ment, games, etc. What more can anyone ask for? Even Mickey Mouse & BINGO!!!

On behalf of your Lodge Officers, I cannot say THANK YOU enough to all of our guests and all of the FANTAS-TIC volunteers I had, of which are too many to name individu-ally here (but you know who you are), and the excellent en-tertainment afforded by John &

Mary Paule Hill. We truly had a day where we showed that ELKS are indeed “family” in many ways. I am very proud to have been asked to chair this event this year. However, I would be doing an injustice if I didn’t acknowledge that I had a very close co-chair in the person of my wife Brenda. She was by my side all the way and I thank her for that! We are hoping for an even bigger & better day for next year and future years. ELKS are indeed passionate about their Brothers & Sisters however their families are an even bigger part of the overall scheme and that was truly seen on this special day! Thank you again for your time and for sharing your families. We greatly appreciated it! Rick & Brenda Boucher

ELDOES UPDATE

“Be the Best of Whoever You Are!”

With the Champlain Valley Fair and the autumn season ap-proaching, I hope you have all had an enjoyable summer. Looking ahead, I would like to encourage the members to share ideas for group outings as well as possible fundraisers at the September 18th meeting. An Eldoe sponsored luncheon was held at the Lodge on Au-gust 8th with approximately 45 in attendance. This social affair, with no agenda, gave us all a chance to visit and get reacquainted. The consensus of the group was that “ we should do this again”. Thanks to John Plunkett and his staff for a fine menu and service on one of his “busier” days. Thanks to Debby Stapleton for arrang-ing this for us. The Directors of the Partners in Adventure Organization ex-pressed their satisfaction and appreciation to all Eldoes for the en-joyable social outings we afforded them last year. They are looking forward to this year’s events, the first of which is scheduled for October 14th from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. All Eldoes extend our condolences to Elsie Dinwiddie on the loss of her long time friend, Ben Winterbottom – you are in our thoughts and prayers. Our best wishes go out to Sandi and Tom Gamelin who have moved to Florida. Hope we will still see you once in a while at a meeting or social event. Our thanks for all you did for the Eldoes.

Exalted Ruler Diane Hazen and Trustee Chairman Chris Bissonette stand next to a beautiful player piano in the Bob Carr Room. It was donated by the family of Joe Kelly. There are dozens of rolls of songs and it has a variety of sounds besides piano. THANK YOU FOR YOUR DONATION!

GREAT IDEA! We want to applaud the decision to furnish the Member bar with new tables and stools. What an asset to the Lodge! We love the fact that many can gather ‘round and chat and laugh all to-gether at the same time. What a great idea! One more thing to help make our Lodge the best establishment in town!
