Wednesday 7th June, 2017 FROM THE PRINCIPAL:

Kia Ora everyone,

A short week this week having enjoyed a long weekend. I hope you

got to spend some quality time with your families.

I am in the classroom Tuesday and Wednesday this week. Ms V is

looking forward to being back in the classroom this week on

Thursday and Friday, after her trip home to the Netherlands

visiting family. We would like to thank Shelley Murphy who filled in

during Bernie’s absence and Hayley Thorpe.

Last Wednesday morning the school visited Kimihia School for

Kapa Haka. Unfortunately Anaru & Chaz where unable to attend

due to an audit (and they have apologised) however the school

ensured we were still well looked after and Kapa Haka went ahead.

The children were well looked after by the students and enjoyed it

so much they did not want to come home. We have some song and

dance moves to work on before our next visit, Wednesday 28th

June.

It was unfortunate that my reliever fell ill last week, Thursday

and we were unable to find a replacement. We apologise for any

inconvenience and will endeavour to put something in place should

something like this ever happen again (an issue for the small

isolated school). A huge thanks to Justine and Lesley for

supervising the students remaining at school, you are awesome.

This also highlighted the importance of up to date contact details

of parents and alternative contacts.

FRIDAYS

FRIDAYS in Terms 2 and 3 children can bring to school pies, sausage rolls etc, that we can put in the pie warmer to heat up for lunch (please NO noodles)

Julie Gifkins for her delicious Pumpkin Pie, made with a

pumpkin the Senior Garden Group grew in their vegetable

garden. What a treat for the children to taste !

SENIOR GARDENING GROUP

Pumpkin Pie

It was really interesting watching the pumpkin growing from a seed to a pumpkin and learning that there are male

and female pumpkin flowers. I was very interested watching the bees pollinate the pumpkin flowers. I did not

know anything about pumpkins before I started doing gardening group with Denise. I took one of our pumpkins

home and we had it with our sausage stew. It was delicious. Angel Y7

We grew butternut pumpkins and we gave them to some of the local Waikaretu community. We planted seeds in

our school garden and covered it with mulch. We had to remember to water it so the plants could grow. We grew

over 20 pumpkins. I used my butternut pumpkin in a boil up for dinner. It was scrumptious. I enjoyed eating it.

Once the pumpkins in the first bed were harvested we counted them, weighed them and measured them. Once

the second bed of pumpkins were ready we did the same as the first bed. The pumpkins from the first bed were

smaller than the ones from the second. The second bed had most of the big ones. The pumpkin I took home

was mashed and we had it for dinner. It was very enjoyable and I loved eating it. Matthew Y8

After we had harvested all of the pumpkins the garden group decided to give a pumpkin to each school family.

Some families made soup from their pumpkin, some mashed theirs for dinner and we had roast pumpkin with

dinner when my grandparents visited. One clever mum made a delicious pumpkin pie and sent it along to school.

I couldn’t stop eating it – it was a real treat. A shout out to Jasper’s mum, Julie, for her awesome baking.
