George Tomlinson News
Dear Parents and Carers, It’s been a wonderful return to work from maternity leave and it has been lovely to see all the children so engrossed in their learning this week. On Monday, Year 3 began their Stone Age projects and I look forward to seeing how their oracy projects linked to the Stone Age develop over the term. I am looking forward to seeing all the Project Based Learning products from Y2-Y6 that the children are now busy planning. Year 2 had some parents in class to talk about life in Bangladesh as part of their Project Based Learning. Thank you to those parents for giving up their time to come in and share their experiences. Earlier in the week, I was very surprised when I walked into the Year 4 classes to see children sitting on the floor and on the tables to do their writing! I was about to tell them off when they explained the chairs had quit and they were writing a letter to persuade them to come back! I think their persuasive letters did the trick because thankfully they did come back! The Year 4 teachers attended some training this week for our next collaboration with the Barbican Box project. Curated this year by mathematician Marcus du Sautoy, the programme will introduce our pupils to imaginative and adventurous approaches by weaving the arts, writing and mathematics all together. We look forward to the workshops starting with the children later this term. I’ve seen some lovely writing in Year 5 this week - beautiful handwriting, presentation and wonderfully descriptive paragraphs. I also caught some Year 1 boys writing during their playtime. They were writing some helpful signs to remind people to be quiet when the chickens are laying their eggs! Our Rocksteady school music bands have also started up this week in EYFS, KS1 and KS2 and I’m really looking forward to seeing them perform later in the year! We will be celebrating Internet Safety Day on Wednesday 29th January and have lots of special events and workshops running for the staff and children. There will also be a parent workshop from 5:30pm – 6:30pm. Please do come along! Internet safety is becoming increasingly important for young people today and it is imperative that we also have a good understanding of how to keep our children safe. I hope you have a great weekend and I look forward to seeing you on Monday! Best wishes, Chloe Alder Deputy Headteacher

Star of the Week
Over 30 of our first band members took part in their Rocksteady workshop this week. Huge thanks to band
leader Sean who got everyone playing drums,
guitar, keyboard and on vocals for their first ever
practice! we've got some really enthusiastic natural
musicians and it was sounding great there in the studio. We will have even more members joining us
next week! If you'd like to sign your child up for this term or next, please let us know as soon as possible as we currently have a waiting
list which we're trying to accommodate.
We are very excited to announce that after lots of hard work and energy from our Eco-Warriors, George Tomlinson is officially an Eco-School! We have been awarded our
Bronze certificate by the international Eco-Schools programme and are now working towards our silver. Our keen Eco-warriors have identified their top three priorities as
Waste, Energy and Transport and we have lots of work to do in each area with challenges for children, staff and families. This week our Eco-Warriors have set
themselves the challenge of writing a report on why the school should get solar panels and how we could do this. They are also creating posters to persuade children and
families to stop bringing in single use plastic bottles ready for next Friday's meeting. Each class is going to nominate daily litter monitors to keep our playground clean and even remind grown-ups to use the bins and recycling bins responsibly when they visit us! We've discussed tree planting, eco-brick building, a scooter and bike loan scheme, an Eco reading zone for the Library and even a no-lights and no-boards Eco Day for the whole school! Our new display has started to fill up with their ideas and we will keep you updated on all our activity here in the newsletter. If you have any ideas to share
with our Eco-warriors please do contact Ms Garratt. Well done everyone on achieving our Bronze Award, now on to Silver!
