News from our Principal

2017 has been another year of fantastic achievements in our incredibly vibrant school.

Following a consultation with our school community, this year was the first year of our new Business Plan Cycle 2017-2019. Already we are making progress towards our strategic goals within each of our 3 focus areas: Excellence

in Teaching and Learning, Optimal Health and Wellbeing and Successful Partnerships and Pathways. You will find our Business Plan on our Website or a hard copy is available from our school reception desk.

In 2017, we have continued to see outstanding student progress in Literacy, Vocational Education results, ASDAN completion and post school outcomes and literacy progress.

The Year 12 Valedictory Ceremony at the Mandurah Performing Arts Centre was a Term 4 highlight. Our graduating students have been outstanding role models for our school achieving excellent academic and health and wellbeing and employment outcomes. We look forward to our Year 12’s either returning to school for Year 13 or taking up study or employment options in 2018.

I would like to say thank you to all our parents for supporting our school this year. We greatly value our partnership with parents and next year will continue to work with parents to provide optimum support for students. Our new initiative, Parent Teacher Partnerships will focus on the continued building of connections with parents. This term we had a record number of parents attend our Parents and Families lunch. It was fantastic to be able to connect with so many parents and also receive some excellent feedback about how parents would like to engage with the school in 2018.

We are very pleased to announce that we have been granted Teacher Development School status (TDS) for 2018. This means we will be delivering Professional Learning and sharing our expertise in special education with other schools focusing on a range of areas including Transition Planning and Health and Wellbeing.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank our fantastic School Board members who give so much of their time to support our school and develop links to the community. Thank you to Anne Bjerregaard, Dianne Chambers, Emma Arnett Jenny Whillas, Jody Hall, Joycelyn Smith, Katy Kell, Georgina Meehan, Nicole Daley, Kirsty Lazzari & Maree Ramos for the contribution made to the positive direction of the school.

Our school is very fortunate to have an incredible team of dedicated staff who have worked very hard this year to provide high quality teaching and learning for our students. At this time of year we also have some goodbyes. We say goodbye to Karen Povey, who has made an excellent contribution to the school as a Curriculum Deputy Principal over the last 3 years for which we are very grateful. We also say goodbye to Middle School Teacher, Jenny Pritchard who has also made an excellent contribution to the school and we wish her every success in her future position. We are also sad to say goodbye to Amy Mead who has been a long serving and dedicated member of the school community. We wish her all the best in her new and exciting position around curriculum.

We wish all our families a safe and happy Christmas and we look forward to welcoming you all back in the New Year.

Notes from MS Deputy

As 2017 draws to a close I would like to acknowledge the wonderful achievements of our students, staff and parents. The exchange of information between parents and staff has been beneficial in supporting student learning and wellbeing.

In Term Four we have had the opportunity to build parent partnerships in Middle School, with our future year 7 parents attending an afternoon tea. It was pleasing to have the majority of our parents attend and connect with other parents and staff.

This Term we had twelve students participate in the Bendigo Bank competition, “How could you improve your community?” The competition provides an opportunity for us to hear students’ perspectives on how we can make a positive change to the community. This year our winners were Nikkeah, David and Sara, who presented the idea of a Lego Library, to be set up after school in the Warnbro Community Library. As part of the process the students were required to present their idea at a “Gala Night” to local dignitaries and associations. It was a pleasure to be a part of the night and be supported by our families. Although our students were not the overall winners we have been advised that the City of Rockingham along with Bendigo Bank, would like to implement the idea they presented at Warnbro Community Library. As you can image Nikkeah, David and Sara were very excited to hear the news, and we look forward to supporting their idea come into fruition.

I have also had the pleasure of reading the final reports for 2017 and would like to acknowledge the achievements the students have made across the curriculum in subjects such as: English, Maths, Science, Humanities and Social Science, and Social Emotional Learning. I would like to recognise that these achievements are possible because of the hard work from our staff and students along with the support and contributions from our parents.

I wish all our students and families a relaxing break and look forward to seeing everyone in 2018!

MS Deputy Marianne Mangano

Collins Year 7

Term Four has been an interesting and engaging term for us during our writing sessions. This Term we have explored transactional writing structures, to include formal or business letters, informal or personal letters, invitations, web blogs, business emails and friendly emails.

We started off by looking at the difference between formal letters and informal letters and in what situations each one would be used. We then moved onto emails, where the students discovered that they all have their own unique email, setup and ready for them to use from the Education Department. We first looked at how to log on to their emails and what emailing looks like. We looked at how to structure an email and why emailing is an important skill to learn. After the students had gained an understanding of this concept they applied their understanding to our Enterprise sessions of creating and selling fresh fruit salad. We did this by emailing staff members asking if they would like to order a fruit salad for recess on a Friday. Applying this learning in a real life context has helped students to use the skill of sending an email in a meaningful way.

It has been a marvellous year and Collins students should be very proud of all of their hard work and what they have achieved this year. I wish everyone a safe and happy holiday and all the best for 2018.

Stirling Year 7

In Literacy this semester, students have been learning about procedural writing: the writing and following of instructions. Firstly, students put their reading skills to the test by completing a number of fun instructional activities. This included following recipes to make Rocky Road and White Christmas, as part of an Enterprise project, and ‘Following a Treasure Map’ as part of Maths. An important discovery made by students was that instructions must be read carefully in order to complete a task properly.

The final activity of this unit involved students writing their own set of instructions. This was by far the most popular and fun activity and it was thus called ‘The Gingerbread Man Project’! Students set about finding an image of a decorated gingerbread man on the internet. They then had to write a set of instructions on how to decorate a gingerbread man according to their design. Once completed, students swapped their set of instructions with another student. Each person was given a gingerbread man and they had to decorate him with icing, sprinkles, M&M’s etc., by following the other person’s instructions. To see how well they the instructions were written and then followed, students compared their finished product with the other person’s design from the internet. The results were nothing short of marvellous!!

ANZAC Yr 8

This Term, we have introduced a new program during Social and Emotional Learning lessons. The Zones of Regulation program helps students gain skills in consciously regulating their actions, which in turn leads to increased control and problem solving abilities. The learning activities are designed to help students recognise when they are in different states called “zones”, with each of the four zones represented by a different color. In the activities, students learn how to use strategies or tools to stay in a zone or move from one zone to another. Students are creating their own “toolbox” of strategies that they can use to manage their feelings and emotions.

The Red Zone is used to describe extremely heightened states of alertness and intense emotions.  Feelings in the red zone include anger and terror.

The Yellow Zone is also used to describe a heightened state of alertness and elevated emotions; however one has more control when they are in the Yellow Zone.  A person may feel anxious or excitement in this zone.

The Green Zone is used to describe a calm state of alertness. A person may be described as happy or ready to learn when in the Green Zone.

The Blue Zone is used to describe a low state of alertness and may include feelings such as sick or tired.

Students have enjoyed choosing ways to help calm themselves down. Some choices included reading a book, drawing a picture, going for a walk, and listening to music.

Darwin

Well it has been a busy year in the Year 9 classroom. The students have worked extremely hard this term and have all had huge achievements throughout the term and year.

In Term Four, the Year 9’s have been learning about the global crisis of Hunger. The students have learnt about Hunger, Poverty and Famine around the World and in Australia, and have been challenged to consider the impacts these issues can have on people. After discussing these issues, the students were tasked with researching statistics; here are just a few of the statistics that the students found:

• 1.3 billion people live in poverty around the world

• The average person who lives in poverty earns less than $2 a day to feed their family

• In Australia, 1 in 5 children go hungry every day.

After discussing these global issues, the Year 9’s decided to hold a Hunger Banquet. Students and staff had first-hand experience of hunger through this experience. Just like in real life, 15% ate like kings, 25% represented your middle income earners and a whopping 60% represented the population that live in poverty.

Stirling 8

As the year comes to a close and we reflect back over the final term for the year, we could not finish the year without showcasing the students efforts with their narrative writing pieces. I’m extremely proud of the students’ hard work and commitment and their growth over the year.

This term in English we focused on up levelling our writing through careful selection of vocabulary and identifying when an adjective or adverb could be used. We examined powerful ways to open sentences through the use of a range of fronted adverbials and improving sentence structure through connectors. The students added interest by replacing commonly used words with synonyms and through experimenting with punctuation.

The students have consolidated their new learning and applied it enthusiastically in a fun and creative narrative writing piece and as a result have produced some excellent results. The students spent weeks in planning and editing their writing pieces. All the students were given the same writing prompt ‘The Door’ and every piece is a unique reflection of the students’ creativity. I was impressed with their enthusiasm and work ethic. I have included some excerpts of their work below. Unfortunately I could not include everyone’s but they were all amazing. I hope you enjoy them as much as I have.

Student work excerpts:

The Door

Briefly, I closed my eyes. There it was the cold, shiny, brass door. I could almost feel the cold metal. I imagined the carvings and could smell the fresh pinewood. Although, this door was not real. I knew what it was. It was the ruthless thing that had been placed between the world and my mind, keeping everything I wanted to tell people locked up. The sadness that had caused many years of crying stayed bolted away, behind those sharp metal locks, memories that only I had the key to, memories I vowed never to be let out again.

- Levi, Year 8

The Door

In the year 1017, after a big, black, scary storm. There was a tragedy that has never been experienced since. Thunder hit the roof, it shattered and the roof collapsed. He saw black all around him. He turned around quickly then in the distance, he saw a demon, it was staring at him. Suddenly, it started to fly and it pointed at him. He started to choke as the demons eyes went red, the demon screamed at him and it disappeared. As it disappeared a door appeared. The door opened and he saw fire and it sucked him in.

- Zephan, Year 8

Business

The Business Class has had a very busy Term Four with lots of exciting news to share.

The students have worked extremely hard throughout the year on their ASDAN and Business Certificates. I can officially say that all the students enrolled have had outstanding results, with 100% achieving these courses.

These are the first of many certificates the students will achieve while in Senior School. These will be filed into their World of Work Portfolio which will follow them throughout their time in Senior School. The students will build their individual portfolios up with relevant information such as, up-to-date resumes, qualifications, work experience history, awards and certificates.

The year 10 students were given an amazing opportunity to try coffee making during our Barista Training this term. The students learned quickly and were very efficient. They decided to run a mini Coffee Enterprise. Our enterprise name was “Coffee Bean Cafe”. During our enterprise day the students made coffees ordered by staff, and delivered them with a smile. We had such positive feedback from staff, who absolutely loved the coffee.

Transport & Logistics

This Term, in weeks 4 and 8, the Transport & Logistics class all successfully participated in Workplace Learning. The students have been involved in a variety of tasks at Coles, Woolworths, Red Dot, Bunnings, Men of the Trees, Good Samaritan Industries, Ace Cinemas and Volunteer Taskforce. They have all done very well, transferring the skills learned in classroom into practice in the workforce.

In week 5 the year 10 students and staff visited the Perth Apple store to gain some valuable skills in taking photographs, and using iPads and computers. We travelled by public transport, giving students opportunities to gain the skills needed to access public transport, and opportunities to develop the social skills required to engage with other members of the public. At the Apple store the students worked with the Apple staff to take photographs and learn about the equipment. At the end of the session they all received an Apple T-shirt, thumb drive bracelet with their photos on, and a certificate. We all had a fabulous time, finishing off with a Subway lunch in Central Park.

All students in the class have also successfully completed the ASDAN certificate, Work Ready and their Certificate I in Transport and Logistics, which they have been working on all year.

Agrifoods

We have finally reached the end of 2017 and it has been a massive year for the students in the Agrifood’s Class.

Students have all completed their Certificate I in Agrifoods and a Certificate II in Warehousing, as well as achieving three modules of the ASDAN Short Courses. Some students have also been working in their traineeships on different days, where they have also achieved many successes.

Our Class Enterprise has gone from strength to strength, with planter boxes being constructed, our shed being set up better than ever, and the gardens at our School flourishing. In particular we have a whole box of sunflowers that we are hoping will burst into full bloom before the year is out! Our Community Garden at Rockingham is also producing some spectacular produce and the students have enjoyed tasting the fruits of their labour throughout the year.

The Year 12’s finished their schooling at the end of Term Three, which allowed the year 11’s to come back and complete a life skills program in the first few weeks of Term Four, before they also finished. Students went across the road to the Warnbro Fair Shopping Centre where they practiced real life skills including using A.T.M.’s, posting letters, and grocery shopping. Upon returning to school we used our groceries to create a variety of delicious dishes. At school we practiced our bed making skills, learnt about budgeting, and then went Op Shopping in the local community. We also explored leisure options available in the local area.

Since leaving school for the year, a number of the Agrifoods students have found jobs, and reports are that they are all doing a brilliant job, and are representing our school in very a positive manner.

Congratulations to all the Agrifood’s students this year!

Hospitality

Hospitality 2017 has been a year to remember. Firstly, all of the students successfully attained their skill sets in Hospitality at South Metropolitan TAFE. They also successfully completed all three ASDAN learning modules: Managing Conflict; Personal Wellbeing; and Healthy and Safe Food. Our “Café Quality Coffees”, stationed at Gracehaven Aged Care Centre in Rockingham on Wednesdays, was a huge community engagement and partnership project success. A fine effort by all!

In addition to our weekly pop up cafe at Gracehaven Elderly Care Facility on Wednesdays, our students prepared and served espresso coffee at our school’s Flourishing Festival; for parent morning teas; and at the Abilitie’s Expo at Crown Convention Centre. Our cafe enterprise was in high demand this year with all students demonstrating excellent barista skills to a consistently high standard.

Earlier this term, as part of the Hospitality course, the students were treated to a three-course meal at Quinlan’s Restaurant at the Beaconsfield TAFE Campus. Monstrous sized steaks and Barramundi fillets in garlic sauce satiated patrons’ appetites. It was an exciting and enjoyable experience for all involved.

The students also flourished during work placements, as did the two students on school based traineeships, with one student gaining paid employment. Well done!

Our year 12 students thoroughly enjoyed their Graduation Dinner, Graduation Breakfast and the Year 12 Valedictory Ceremony. Best of luck to all of our 2017 graduates!

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the Hospitality students’ and their parents for making Hospitality 2017 a year to remember! Have a safe and merry festive season and we will see you back in 2018 for another amazing year of hospitality delights!

Retail

As 2017 draws to a close I would like to acknowledge the achievements within the Retail Class:

• A very successful Enterprise with profits being donated to The Smith Family to support local families in need; an initiative decided by the students.

• The completion of a very rigorous TAFE qualification; Certificate II in Retail Services.

• The completion of three very interesting and meaningful ASDAN learning journeys.

• The development of extremely valuable Work Place Learning (WPL) skills through school based programs and WPL participation. Some students secured ongoing WPL on a weekly basis and one student secured ongoing paid employment.

• An average of 90% achievement of Individual Transition Plan (ITP) targets.

• Increased attendance and therefore participation and achievement in valuable learning programs.

• Further development of targeted character strengths, especially; gratitude, teamwork and kindness.

Students should be very proud of their efforts and achievements this year!

Directions

Term Four has been very busy finishing off all of our courses and work for the year, but luckily we also had time for a few celebrations with our friends before the end of the term!

In the last week before school finished, the Directions class cooked pizzas and then invited the other Senior School classes in for lunch. Before our guests arrived we brainstormed some possible topics of discussion and set the table ready for a meal. We all enjoyed our meal and it was a great way to end the year for our Senior School students.

During our ASDAN modules we learnt basic first aid applications such as how to treat burns, cuts and grazes. We also continued with life skills training we have been practising throughout the year, such as washing, cooking and cleaning.

Directions have had a very successful year, with students completing TAFE certificates, ASDAN modules and Life Skills programs. Some of our students will be returning next year, while others have completed their school journey and are embarking on the next chapter of their lives. We wish them the very best!

The staff in Directions would also like to wish all students and families a happy holiday season, and we look forward to seeing you in the New Year!

Directions Team

Well it’s the end of 2017, what a successful year we have had with our Senior School Student’s outcomes:

• 12 Students in School Based Traineeships

• 8 Students in Employment

• 3 Students involved in Community Volunteer Engagement

• 5 Students in further study at South Metropolitan TAFE

Eighteen new employers became involved in our Workplace Learning Program; this provides greater opportunities for our students to engage in various types of businesses and different sets of work skills.

Year 12s Update

This year, Warnbro Community High School Education Support Centre had twelve students who have achieved graduation. To mark such an important occasion a number of events have been held for students, their families, and staff, to share in the celebration of their success

The first celebration was the Year 12 Ball. An amazing Winter Wonderland was created with the magic of snow falling as very dapper young men and elegant young ladies walked through the door. Great food was enjoyed by all and the dance floor was treated to some very smooth moves. It was everything a year 12 ball should be, a fabulous night with good friends.

At the end of Term Three, our year 12 students, families, and staff attended the Year 12 Graduation Dinner. Held once again at the fabulous Peel Manor, students and families were treated to an elegant night. Everyone enjoyed a three-course meal whilst videos highlighting the students many achievements, fun times, and hard work over the course of their schooling brought many happy memories and laughter. This was alongside many heart-felt speeches throughout the night. Every one enjoyed celebrating each student’s journey.

The final day of the Year 12’s official schooling, started with the Graduation Breakfast. Students combined with mainstream to enjoy a cooked breakfast before being farewelled at a whole school assembly. This was followed by their final walk out of the school being acknowledged for their achievement by the remainder of the school.

The final event for our students was the Official Valedictory Ceremony where they received their Graduation Certificates and get ready to move out into the world.

From the staff at Warnbro CHS ESC, we thank you for letting us be part of your journey through school life. We look forward to seeing the students who will return next year as part of the Directions Year 13 Class. To all others, we look forward to hearing about life after school. We look forward to seeing you flourish as you take on everything life has to offer.

Bike Program

The students and teachers in the Revamp Bike Club have continued working through Term Four and have demonstrated some fantastic achievements in 2017.

A large number of creative bikes have been completed over the year, and several bikes belonging to students and parents have been repaired. Term Four has seen students continue to receive valuable bike riding lessons, and several students have made further valuable contributions to the program and school, by working diligently as student assistants. The Revamp Bike Club continues to benefit from the hard work of our staff including Education Assistant Mr Richard Bailey.

In Term Four the Revamp Bike Club presented a local Primary School with a set of successfully repaired kindergarten tricycles, which were very much appreciated. The bike program is also progressing plans to regularly build and donate bikes to the local Salvation Army, with two bikes already having been donated for families in need.

The Revamp Bike Club is always looking for unwanted bikes for the students to work on, and repair back to a usable condition. In particular we are interested in bikes that have a 22”-24” wheel size (a bike size suitable for many of our younger students), but any donation is appreciated. If you have a bike that you no longer wish to keep and wish to donate it to our program, please feel free to call me on 0423 798 452.

Finally if your child wishes to rebuild a bike (which they can either keep, donate to a sibling, or another worthwhile cause), please get them to talk to their teacher about being added to our waiting list.

Mr Tim Harries Bike Club Coordinator

CALM

The Creativity, Active Learning and Mindfulness Program (CALM), has been operating throughout Term Four, with a new group of students aiming to benefit from the outdoor activities and opportunities this program provides.

Staff and students have taken part in many visits to the Baldivis Children’s’ Forest, bush walking, playing team based games, and learning to enhance focus through the practice of mindfulness. Activities are varied to allow for enhanced interest and engagement, and are supplemented in their appeal by the peaceful bush setting of this area.

With these excursions the overall aim is to provide the CALM students with positive experiences to improve their outlook and self-esteem. Students are encouraged to understand that through positive effort, they can form positive relationships, and settle their thoughts, emotions and resulting actions.

We have enjoyed many creative and challenging activities this year, and are looking forward to seeing the program continue to grow in 2018.

MOS - Dancing

The Middle School students have thoroughly enjoyed hip hop dance classes with MOS Dance Company. Their dance instructor, Cob, has taught the students dance routines with a range of dance moves. In their dance sessions the students have the opportunity to show off their dance moves during the freestyle part of the lesson.

For the Celebrate Abilities Day at the Gary Holland Community Centre held on the 30th of November, Cob and the students worked on a set routine to perform. The students’ performance displayed their skills and enthusiasm for hip hop dancing.

Numeracy

The Concrete Representational Abstract (CRA) Approach to Learning Mathematics

This year the Middle School teachers have gained some valuable training and experience in applying the Concrete Representational Abstract (CRA) approach to their teaching programs. The CRA approach is a three step instructional strategy that has been found to be highly effective in teaching math concepts.

The Concrete Stage

The first step is called the concrete stage.  It is known as the “doing” stage and involves physically manipulating objects to solve a math problem.

Here is an example of how a student may solve a problem in the concrete stage given the problem ‘What is twenty blocks divided or shared into four groups?’ The concrete phase gives students hands on practice using concrete materials such as blocks, counters, coins, marbles and pop sticks.

The Representational Stage

The representational stage is the next step.  It is also known as the “pictorial” stage and involves using images to represent objects to solve a math problem, for example tally marks, dots, pictures or drawings. Here are other examples of what this may look like given the above problem:

Abstract Stage

The final step in this approach is called the abstract stage.  It is known as the “symbolic” stage and involves using only numbers and symbols to solve a math problem, such as written equations, fractions, and units of measurement, dollar and cent signs and decimal points

20 ÷ 5 = 4Each stage builds on to the previous stage and therefore must be taught in sequence. This progression enables students to develop a deeper understanding of each concept as they move between each stage.

It was a night full of fun, food and dancing on the 20th of November at the year 10 River Cruise. The students arrived at the school dressed to impress and all looked fantastic. We left school at 5:30pm to board the boat by 7pm.

We enjoyed a lovely main meal, after which students were invited onto the dance floor to show their moves and enjoy the music. When we reached the half-way point of our journey, we were served dessert, and then it was back to the dance floor.

Overall it was a great night had by all!

Speech and Occupational Therapy at Warnbro

Speech Pathology and Occupational Therapy (OT) in Term 4 has continued to be targeted towards individual students, groups and whole classes in the areas of language, social skills, speech, literacy, emotional and sensory regulation and processing. All students are keen to participate in all speech and OT therapy sessions which make it a joy for the therapists.

Friendship Group continues to be delivered on a fortnightly basis on Thursdays. The final Friendship Group will be the Thursday of week 9. Thank you to all the students who attend the group, it is a fun and collaborative team.

Enjoy the rest of the year, and have a safe and happy holiday!

Wellbeing Team

This term we have been running a course on ‘Coping Strategies’ for a small group of students.

The course runs for 10 weeks and looks at alternative ways to cope in a variety of situations. The aim of the course is to help develop effective methods of coping, therefore supporting students to make positive decisions, empowering them with the skills needed to problem solve and set future goals for themselves.

This course has been very popular and the feedback from students and staff has been positive.

This programme will continue into 2018.

Parent Support Gathering

On the 15th of November Wellbeing Team Youth Worker’s, Georgia and Jo, hosted a family support lunch at the school. More than 35 parents attended the lunch where they were able to spend time connecting with other parents and staff. Those who attended also completed a survey providing the school with feedback on what they would like these gatherings to look like in 2018. The Youth Workers are currently in the process of creating a calendar of family support events for the coming year based on all the incredible feedback family members provided.

R U OK DAY

Our Senior School participated in raising awareness for RU OK? Day. RU OK? Day is a national day of action dedicated to reminding everyone that we’ve all got what it takes to ask, “are you ok?” and support those struggling with life.

Weeks of preparation saw the Retail class deliver a perfect afternoon of fun, games, teaming building and plenty of laughs.

The day emphasised to students the significance of making time to insure those around us are doing okay, and recognise the value of how just a few short minutes from our day to ask if other’s are okay may actually save someone’s life.

We finished the day with a barbeque lunch, followed by a community circle, allowing the students the opportunity to share their experiences from the day. We received an enormous amount of positive feedback from the students, and wish to make this an annual event for our school to partake in.
