From RabbiMichael Pont

Shavuot begins on Tuesday evening, May 30th and ends Thursday evening, June 1st. Literally Shavuot means ‘weeks’ because God commands us to count seven weeks from Passover, leading up to Shavuot, which is actually on the fiftieth day. This counting was significant agriculturally for our ancestors, as Shavuot was a harvest festival in biblical times. Yet this meaning is by and large lost on us today. Instead we think of Shavuot as Z’man Matan Torateinu, the time of the giving of our Torah. Here is a historical perspective. “(The counting) commemorates the historic journey from slavery in Egypt to meeting God at Sinai. We celebrate freedom on Pesach but recognize that the exodus is not truly complete until we receive instruction as to how to live with that freedom, on Shavuot.” (Siddur Lev Shalem, p.63) On Passover we choose to exist in holiness with God. Indeed, the exodus leading to Sinai is a metaphor for life today. In what ways are you still trying to be free? How are you making your way to a personal Sinai?

Since Shavuot arrives near the end of the school calendar year, it is generally less observed than other holidays. This is a shame, because I think that the dominant ceremony of this month and next, graduation, is not so different from the holiday. At graduation people stand and are recognized for their achievements. They receive a valuable degree that will help them to excel in life. So too on Shavuot, we stand symbolically with our ancestors and receive the Torah, a set of principles with which we identify and that will guide and support us in this world.

Every year Shavuot is an opportunity to, “graduate” from one state of being to another. Will you grasp this moment? Will you increase your level of Jewish involvement at our Temple? Join us for an inspiring Shabbat service! RSVP for one of many Shabbat and

holiday dinners this month and next: May 5th, 12th, 30th, and June 9th. Did you enjoy a seder last month? Why not continue those warm feelings of camaraderie by inviting people into your home for a Shabbat meal? In Judaism when you give a little you get back so much more!

Graduate to shleimut or wholeness this year, starting on Shavuot!

Shalom,

Rabbi Pont

From the PresidentRhonda Eiger

After 28 years of dedication as our preschool direc-tor, Rene Kipnes, has made the decision to retire. She will certainly be missed! We will be celebrating her dedication and service to our preschool at a spe-cial Shabbat dinner on May 12, 2017. Thank you to Rene for her dedication, hard work and diligence. The Nominating Committee has selected the slate of officers for the coming year, and we will have a con-gregational meeting on May 17, 2017 to vote on that slate. I want to take this opportunity to thank those who served on the last Committee for their time and effort. Thank you to Andrea Barnett for chairing the Committee and to Alan Greenberg, John Gutman, Mark Levy, Shari Lieboff and Sheila Mandel for serving on the Committee.

Additionally, The budget was passed at the last Board of Trustees Meeting, and a separate Congregational meeting will be held to bring the budget to the Congregation as well.

Thank you also to Marvin Glickstein and Second Generation for planning a thought provoking and meaningful Yom HaShoah Program. Guest speaker, Miriam Dobin, shared her family’s history and expe-riences during and after the Holocaust. Thank you also to Men’s Club for organizing and distributing the Yom HaShoah candles to everyone. We held a Congregational meeting on Thursday, April 20, 2017, at which time John Gutman proposed a Constitutional Amendment to change the quorum for a Congregational Meeting from 50 congregants to 40 congregants, and I am pleased to announce that the amendment passed by an overwhelming majority. That being said, we do ask that everyone who can come to our Congregational Meetings please do so.

This change will just make it less likely that we will have to adjourn and reschedule the meetings. Thank you to all of you who were present for the vote. We had tried a few years ago to lower the quorum to 35, and at that time the amendment did not pass. Fortunately, this time it did. I just want to take this opportunity to remind every-one that we have a lot of committees that are always having meetings and events. We want to encourage each and every one of you to get involved in some-thing new that you have not already taken part in. There are plenty of opportunities. Please come and take advantage of them. Remember, together, we can continue to make a difference and make MJC thrive. Yachad anachnu yecholim laasot et hevdel.

B’shalom,

Rhonda Eiger

This past Seder, the Krieger family and our guests used Aryeh Ben David’s brand new Ayeka Haggadah. On the second day of Pesach, I presented a workshop illustrating some of the most creative points of the Haggadah.

The Ayeka Haggadah – Hearing Your Own VoiceThe Jews’ prolonged suffering in Egypt made them unable to hear Moses’ inspiring words, or to imagine a brighter future. Their lives had been utterly dark-ened. In the beginning of Genesis, we read about the flood and the destruction of the world. After forty days of rain, Noah emerges from the ark to encounter a world of death and desolation. Everything had been destroyed. How can he go on? What purpose is there in rebuilding? God gives Noah the antidote to despair – the rainbow. God could have simply said, “I will never destroy the world again,” but God does more than that. God shows Noah the rainbow. The rainbow is the epitome of all beauty. It encompasses all colors, all wavelengths. Within the rainbow is concealed all possibilities of future beauty. After destruction and suffering, beauty gives us hope. What one item of special beauty would you want to add to your Seder table this year?

We begin the Seder by eating karpas, a breath of spring. With it, we ingest the resolute force of new life. Its color, smell and taste remind us of the tough power of life within. We are eating the hope of nature itself. What aspect of the natural world gives you hope? What is the most hopeful place you have ever been?

We start the Seder with brokenness, with a piece miss-ing. We are never really ready to begin our journey. There is always some brokenness: there is always a piece missing. It is risky to venture into the unknown without assurances that everything will work out. There are always good reasons for staying put. Despite these reasons, we begin our journey. It is an act of defiant courage. At every stage in our lives we can choose between remaining stuck and risking moving ahead. What was the risk you took in the past year (or years) on your journey? What was the missing piece you found for last year’s journey? What is risky about the next step on your journey? Every jour-

ney has its spiritual moment. Taking steps on a jour-ney, getting unstuck, always seems to have an element of mystery and the miraculous. On your journey, was there ever a moment when you felt helped by God? Was there ever a moment that you sensed a deep spiritual connection to something beyond? What was that like for you? What has been “your plague” on your journey? Every journey has moments of gratitude –Dayenu. What are 3 specific moments of your journey worth singing about?

Expressing Gratitude: Sometimes the accumulation of life’s small defeats can wear us down and make us lose hope. My brain is flooded with: Why didn’t I do that? I can’t believe that I did that again; what on earth was I thinking? What would happen if I changed my focus? If instead of reminding myself of my fail-ings, I started to list my successes? Even my little ones? What would happen if we began publicizing achievements and blessings rather than catastro-phes and setbacks? What if we tried to see things in a positive light? If we constructed “gratitude lists” to make us more aware of all the wonderful things happening to us? Singing the song, “Dayenu,” is nothing if not a “national gratitude list.” After a rous-ing chorus, how can a person not have more hope? What would be on your gratitude list for the Jewish People? Can you get to fifteen things?

We are hardwired to give. One of the worst feelings in the world is not being needed by others. But a slave has nothing to offer. Drained of energy and time, the slave’s emotional and physical resources are depleted. With no ability to give, slaves lose their sense of humanity, feel empty and worthless, and incapable of generosity. So, we begin the Seder by proclaiming, “Anyone who is hungry should come and eat!” We are no longer slaves with nothing to give. No matter what our situation, we boldly declare that we have food in abundance and we can’t wait to share it with the world – a moment of exaggerated and piercing “largeness.” It is announcing, “I am a giving person! I am overflowing with goodness and kindness! I have a full tank of giving to share with everyone!” Share a moment when you either carried out or witnessed a momentous act of extraordinary giving.

The bookends of the May calendar begin with Yom Hazikaron and Yom Ha’atzmaut, and end with Memorial Day followed by Shavuot. The way the days fall on the secular calendar and the Jewish calen-dar this year present us with some interesting perspec-tives that are influenced in their own way by the word “Remember” or “Zachor.”

The first two holidays commemorate Israel Memorial Day and Independence Day. Since one of my trips to Israel during the 80’s, I have had haunting memories of the sadness of one day, leading into the jubilation of the next. We have learned that Israel was built on the ashes of the Holocaust, as well as by the fierce-ness and dedication of its military. In a nation that is geographically the size of New Jersey and only in its sixth decade of history, everything is personal. It is impossible to distance oneself from the reality of nation building and loss. In Israel, Zachor is part of everyday life and quite profound on the national days of remembrance and commemoration. These dates are on the MJC calendar, but otherwise in our secular lives, they seem somewhat remote and further from the heart of our existence.

Thanks to Second Generation for bringing quality pro-grams to the congregation for Yom HaShoah and to the Men’s Club for distributing yellow candles at the end of last month. On May 5th, the Israel Affairs Committee is planning a festive Israel themed Shabbat dinner with a JNF speaker to celebrate Yom Ha’atzmaut. Through the activities of our active synagogue, we are closer to the past and memory of our shared history.

In May, our MJC schools winde down. There will be Hebrew School graduations and special services. On May 12th, there will be a special Shabbat Dinner in

honor of Rene Kipnes, the MJC Preschool Director for the last 30 years. I know that so many families will want to share this milestone with Rene. She is cred-ited with starting the MJC Preschool and nurturing every young child that entered our doors, while gently holding the hands of all our parents and teachers. I will have much more to say in next month’s Temple Topics, but please accept this as an introduction to the gratitude so many of us share for Rene’s amazing tenure.

There will be services beginning on Tuesday night, May 30th for Shavuot, the holiday that marks the giv-ing of the Torah at Mount Sinai more than 3300 years ago. Every year at this time, we renew our acceptance of the Torah. On a spiritual level, our sages have com-pared this holiday to a wedding between God and the Jewish people. Jewish celebrations always give us pause to merge our spiritual, physical and intellectual thoughts based on the sacred texts and enhanced by the stories of our ancestors. Living in suburban New Jersey, in the twenty-first century, this holiday is not easily found on school calendars or on smart phones, unless of course you have the HebCal app. Without the benefit of a thriving synagogue, these important days on the Jewish calendar might be less noticeable and harder to observe or appreciate.

Throughout this month, the benefits of belonging to MJC are quite evident as the shul connects us to his-tory, collective memory, sharing life cycle events, expressing gratitude, observing rituals and living more Jewishly.

Here’s hoping that May brings renewed Jewish life, along with lots of sunshine and beautiful flowers.

RELIGIOUS SCHOOLDear Families,

I hope you all had a nice Spring Break. We had special programs for Passover for all classes and it was great celebrating this holiday with your children!

Our 3rd and 4th graders went on a trip to the Jewish Museum in Freehold. It was an educational way to spend time together. In particular, we learned about Sally Priesand, the first female rabbi ordained in the US.

Our 6th graders had a family program – a model Seder. It was an interactive Seder with students and parents and it was so inspiring to see families coming together to learn about our traditions.

The K/1st and 2nd graders had their class service. It was a very nice evening, and I’d like to give a big thank you to Cantor Teplitz, Morah Regina, Morah Lynette and Morah Sue.

This month we also celebrated the Zimriyah, a song festival. The students were full of energy and the parents enjoyed seeing their kids singing. This was our first Zimriyah, and we look forward to making it an annual tra-dition for years to come.

Pharaoh declared that every male Jewish baby should be thrown into the Nile. According to the Midrash, the despairing Jews in Egypt wanted to quit having children. Why bring a child into the world if the child’s fate would be so tragic and heartbreaking? The Jews had lost hope in the future and chose not to have kids. In contrast, our Seder is totally focused on children. We get naches when our little ones sing “Ma Nishtanah.” And who doesn’t think about the four chil-dren when thinking about the Seder? When I ask peo-ple, “What gives you hope?” the most common answer I receive is “kids.” Hardships wear us down, but kids come along to spark and resuscitate our optimism. Teaching our children, the story of Passover is our declaration of hope in the future. Where is the kid in you? Would you like to be more “kid-ish?” What part of you still has a child’s unbridled optimism?

Bad times. Chewing on bad times. In my family, we have a custom of biting into a big chunk of horse-radish during the Seder. Faces turn red; eyes wince; we’re burning from the inside. And the it is over. A big “aahhh.” Each person takes a deep breath. We’ve survived maror. The bitterness of maror is an essential part of the Seder. Slavery imprinted trauma on our

souls that did not disappear when we crossed the Sea of Reeds. Generations of anguish, physical and spiritual, do not vanish. They linger in the inner recesses of our lives, waiting to be triggered. They can control us. The bitterness of disempowerment and persecution is still with us, whether or not we choose to acknowledge it. We need to revisit the bitterness every year to face it, taste it, own it and conquer it. With the exhaling of the, “Aahhh” comes fresh hope of moving ahead. We will not let lingering bitterness paralyze or diminish us. We have confronted it head on; we have chewed on it once again and survived to tell our story. What are the dif-ficult moments in Jewish history that looking back now, give you hope?

I also want to wish my wonderful choir a big Yasher Koach for learning three very challenging compositions in honor of Yom Hashoah: Sim Shalom, Ve-erastich Li, Mi Haish and Talit. The MJC choir includes Diane Amster, Andrea Barnett, Phoebe Dichner, Toby Elkin, Gloria Gelband, Frank Glaz, Hy Grossman, Amy Hymanson, Belle Kaplan, Nancy Beller-Krieger, Shari Lieboff, Sheila Mandel, Stanley Mandel, Reba Schneiderman, Gloria Topor and Bonnie Wolf. May you go from strength to strength!

PRIME TIMERSThe Prime Timers are busy with many activities. We enjoyed the play In the Heights very much. Our next play will be La Cage Aux Folles on June 11. In September, there will be a performance of La Traviata at the Axelrod Theater. I will keep you informed of the exact date.

Just one day before Pesach, I stepped into the dining room and saw members of the synagogue diligently packing large bags of food for the people who needed help for the holidays. I was amazed to see the generous amounts of packages being prepared to be delivered. There was gefilte fish, soup, and all types of other foods. All I could think of was who paid for this? I did take a package to someone. I was very touched by how many people were happily helping and also amazed at how many people needed help.

On Thursday, April 20, I stopped to talk to Dale in the office. We came upon the subject of the meals that were distributed for Pesach. Dale informed me that there is a fund called Theodore & Dora Steinkohl, which is from the Social Action Committee. We can donate for various occasions to their fund, which is used for food donations. I would like the Prime Timers to take this on as our project and focus on making donations or food contributions to their fund especially before Pesach next year.

A meeting for May has not yet been set at this point. You will be informed as soon as possible. Because of the prediction of a storm, I decided to cancel the last meeting and it did storm just about the time we would have ended the meeting. Thank you for your understanding. And thank you members and friends for your interest in our next meeting.

Looking forward to seeing you at our next meeting. New members and friends are always welcome.

ISRAEL AFFAIRS COMMITTEE (IAC)Israel Night at the Movies – 5/7/17We will be showing Wedding Doll (Hatuna Meniyar) (2016) a drama, on Sunday evening 5/7 at 7:30 PM in the MJC Dining Room. Hagit, a young woman with mild mental deficiency, works in a toilet-paper factory. She lives with her mother Sarah, a divorcée who gave up her life for her daughter. Hagit strives for indepen-dence and Sarah is torn between her desire to protect her, and her own will to live. When a relationship develops between her and the son of the factory owner, Hagit hides it from her mother. The announcement of the closing of the factory shakes Hagit and Sarah’s life and jeopardizes Hagit’s love story. (Running Time 1:22). As always, FREE to MJC members and $7 for non-members, refreshments included.

Movies for the 2017-2018 “Season”Our Israel movie night program will return in the fall, for our seventh season. That is a lot of movies when we screen eight or nine a season. All the films we show must be made in Israel, are in Hebrew and with subtitles. Many of the ones you see advertised in the area are about Jewish people but made in countries such as the US, France, Germany, Czech Republic, etc. Beth and I were recently in Israel and purchased nine DVDs, many of them 2016 releases that are in

theatres now. The schedule will be published in the September Temple Topics, once dates have been set.

4th Annual Yom Ha’atzmaut Dinner & JNF SpeakerOur Israeli Themed menu has been a success in past years with 165 people attending last year. This year join us for on Friday night 5/5 and then hear our guest speaker Avnet Kleiner speak about the incredible work being done to develop the Negev, including the Aleh Negev rehabilitation facility. RSVP with Patty in the office, ext. 109 to make a reservation. More details to come.

Hebrew School LOTEM Blue Box DonationsIn mid-March we collected the JNF Blue Boxes, counted the funds and returned the boxes so we can continue collecting tzedakah. The total to date is $493, which is $20 ahead of last year at this time. There will be one more collection just before the MJC Hebrew School year finishes. The final number for the 2016-2017 campaign was $1,000 and we hope to reach or exceed that. Thanks for helping to teach your children about tzedakah and supporting LOTEM.

April is another busy month for Men’s Club. We packed and delivered the Yellow candles for commemoration of Yom Hashaoah. We celebrated having the Sefer Haftorah at MJC, which was beautifully chanted by Elliott Brown, and enjoyed an evening of friendship with our annual Steak & Scotch night with 50 Men from our community.

While May is a bit slower for us, we look forward to our summer BBQ and some additional programming. Watch the weekly email for more information.

MJC Men’s Club participates in the region raffle, the top prize this year is an $1,800 gift card. Tickets can be purchased 10 for $18 and the drawing is June 14th. See any Men’s Club member for more information or email Eric or Alan.

Haimisha Helper was started a couple of years ago as an effort to help those who need some extra assistance in your home for small tasks you may not be able to do. We have helped with small things such as changing light bulbs and batteries, moving some boxes out to the curb and even furniture to make rehabilitation easier for one of our Temple members. We are a group of Men who are here to assist you in you need it; there is no payment and no judgment. Whether you need help for the short term or more, we want to help you. Please let us do a mitzvah, reach out to Alan Greenberg at 732-861-8433 or by email at [email protected] so we can be there for you.

If you would like to join Men’s Club or have ideas for programming, religious, social, community action or other, we welcome you to get involved and help make Men’s Club even better. Please reach out to Eric or Alan at the emails below.

As we approach the end of the youth programming year, we yet again brace for changes – incoming 3rd graders will join Pre-Kadima, incoming 6th graders will join Kadima, and nally 8th graders will make the big jump to USY. Additionally, USY is preparing for some leadership shifts, as with every new yearyear some of our leaders graduate, and there is a “changing of the guard.” Although this year is really no diierent than past years, Marlboro Jewish Center’s USY Chapter is going through somewhat of a transformation.

YAHRZEITS - MAY - JUNE

Upon Kindling The Yahrzeit CandleO God, Source of life and love, we turn to You at this time of remembering,

As we light this candle in memory of our departed. In Your Keeping, the soul of our beloved still glows, As brightly as the “heavenly firmament.”

Truly, “the human soul is the light of the Lord.”

By Your light, may we who lovingly remember see light:And may the memory of our departed abide with us, as a lasting benediction.
