On November 20th, 2016 Marlboro USY, fondly known as MUSY, was bestowed the ultimate award of International Chapter of the Year from United Synagogue Youth. This award was given to us along with recognition for excellence in Membership/Kadima Performance, Israel and overall programming, and Social Actions/Tikkun Olam. Much of the credit for this award goes to all of our members led with excellence by the board of 2015-2016; Hannah Eiger, President, Seth Katz, Executive VP, Jessica Kaplan, Religious/Education VP, Josh Eiger, Social Actions/Tikkun Olam VP, Cory Fox, Membership/Programming VP, Gabbi Kaplan, Communications VP and Shawn Konichowsky, Freshman Representative. We also thank Greg Yellin, who was the advisor to the chapter last year and Ethan Weg who is the chapter advisor this year.

None of this would be possible without the dedication of our congregation family, Youth Commission, Rabbi Pont and the entire staff for the unbending support for our children. There has never been a request denied that would benefit our youth groups and we continue to feel part of a greater Kehilla.

From RabbiMichael Pont

United Synagogue Youth (USY) is the youth activities arm of Conservative Judaism. There are over 300 chapters throughout the United States, Canada, and Mexico, with some 15,000 members. This year, our own MUSY won “International Chapter of the Year.” I am so proud of our teens, especially the leaders who are a dynamic group! They are passionate about Jewish life and have done so much for our synagogue, for USY, and for the community at large. Sunday morning November 20 was the last day of Hagalil Regional Fall Convention in Clark, NJ. Rabbi David Levy and Michelle Rich, Senior Director and Director of Teen Learning and Programming, came to the convention and made the announcement. It was a joyous and exciting moment for MJC, and I was thrilled to be there with our President Rhonda Eiger, Youth Director Lori Solomon, MUSY Advisor Ethan Weg, many parents and of course our teens!! Rhonda, Lori and I all grew up in USY. We believe in its mission and we have witnessed firsthand the impact it has had on young people.

Below is the recommendation letter I wrote in June, which details how much of an impact MUSY has, in Marlboro and beyond.

Again, mazel tov!!Rabbi Pont

June 17, 2016/10 Sivan 5776

To Whom It May Concern:I am proudly writing to endorse Marlboro USY, (MUSY), for International USY Chapter of the Year. MUSY is, without a doubt, the youthful backbone of our congregation! Through their various activities, these teens make a major impact on our community. MUSY meets every Thursday night and there are twenty five to fifty teens at each meeting. I do not know of another chapter that can boast such attendance! We host Fall Kinnus or another Regional weekend every other year, including this past November’s convention. Furthermore, over the past years over forty campers and staff attended each summer Hagalil Encampment. Our mission goes beyond Hagalil. Whether in Boston, New Orleans, Atlanta,

or Baltimore, Marlboro had amongst a high number of delegates to International Convention, and we plan to send another strong contingent to Dallas. MUSY activity for SATO is inspiring - this year we collected over $5,500.00! Not only is this by far the highest of any chapter in our region, but it is more than many entire regions of USY. In addition to serving the synagogue, MUSYers participated in USY’s ASB last April, helping in Union Beach, NJ with post-Hurricane Sandy clean up. They plan to return to the same home, to hang up a mezuzah for the family. MUSY’s Executive Board is dynamic. They are the engine of the MUSY train, and they run at full speed organizing activities! Many of these teens are on Hagalil’s Regional General Board – this year there were eleven! One of our members was on Regional Executive Board this year, and next year we will have two. In short, MUSYers are leaders of Hagalil. Again, the synagogue is invested in MUSY. Our Youth Director (Lori Solomon), advisor (Gregg Yellin), and lay leaders all guide the teens. I also have a strong relationship with the chapter as a teacher, volunteer, and all-around cheerleader! This year’s “Sex in the Text” program received an educational award from the region. The Rel/Ed VP reached out to me and we partnered for an engaging event. I also help to coordinate a MUSY Shabbat each year, in which MUSYers lead a Friday night service. When MUSY hosts a convention, congregants join the teens for Shabbat services, feeling the joy and excitement USY offers.

When people ask me, “Why did you become a rabbi,” I credit USY. I was a member of Shaarey Zedek USY (SZUSY) in Detroit in the mid 1980’s, and never missed a local event or convention. In USY I learned to love being Jewish and how to be a mentsch. I have been in Marlboro since 2011. One reason I wanted to come here is MUSY, because a synagogue that hosts and fosters such a strong chapter must be special.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions.

Shalom u’veracha,

Rabbi Michael PontMarlboro Jewish Center

MARLBORO USY IS INTERNATIONAL CHAPTER OF THE YEAR!

From the PresidentRhonda Eiger

I want to take this opportunity to congratulate Marlboro United Synagogue Youth (MUSY) for the awards that they received from International USY. Here is the official announcement from International USY:

We are proud to announce the winners of this year’s annual chapter and programming awards. Each year, from hundreds of chapters across North America, USY names a Chapter of the Year and recognizes chapters that dem-onstrate excellence in the organization’s major areas of focus. Award recipients are chosen by teen regional presi-dents and the International Executive Board based upon USY’s standards of excellence.

This year’s winners are... Award Chapter Name & Location

Region Chapter of the YearMarlboro Jewish Center’s MUSYMarlboro, NJ Hagalil USY

Excellence in Communications Moriah Congregation’s McDUSY, Deerfield, IL CHUSY

Excellence in Religion/Education Ohr Kodesh Congregation’s OKCUSY, Chevy Chase, MD Seaboard USY

Excellence in Membership/KadimaPerformance, Israel & Overall Programming, and Social Action/Tikkun Olam Marlboro Jewish Center’s MUSY, Marlboro, NJ Hagalil USY

MUSY has never been the recipient of this award since the inception of our chapter. Rather than sharing how proud I am of our teens in their achievements, I wanted to share the post from Hannah Eiger, President of MUSY for 2015-2016 because frankly, she said it better than I could. The Facebook post is as follows: “I wanted to wait to post this until the shock wore away a little bit, and I could wrap my head around

what happened. I could not be more proud and happy to share that Marlboro USY has won International Chapter of the Year. I spent the best year of my life as MUSY President last year, spending every Thursday night with a kehillah like no other. What sets this award apart from other awards and our chapter from other chapters, was how this was not due to the efforts of me, or Cory Fox, the past and present presidents of MUSY, but a huge growing family.

I think there are a few people who have not yet been recognized for this award, who should be for their endless work for MUSY last year.

Seth Katz, Jessica Kaplan, Josh Eiger, Cory Fox, Gabrielle Kaplan, and Shawn Konichowsky, as the Musy 2015-2016 board, it was all you. We would not have gotten chapter of the year without any of you. All of your constant energy and enthusiasm created such a unique, welcoming, and thriving Jewish community at MUSY. From our lock-in with over 50 people and representatives from 5 different regions, to our weekly exciting events, we are definitely a chapter that stands out. Seth, Josh, and Cory also deserve recognition for their Israel, Social Action Tikkun Olam (SA/TO), and Membership awards. Thank you MUSY ‘15-’16 board, for keeping USY alive and thriving in our community.

Thank you to Greg Yellin and Lori Solomon, for all that you do for MUSY and guiding the board throug out the whole year. Thank you the 2016-2017 board and Ethan Weg for taking care of my home. To many more years of MUSY growing, inspiring, and being a place every Marlboro USYer can call home.”

As a Congregation we should only strive to work as well together as our USYers have. Remember: yachad anachnu ycolim laasot et hevdel, it is together that we can make a difference just like MUSY has made a difference.

B’Shalom,Rhonda Eiger

Nashuva is a progressive traditional synagogue in Los Angeles, California celebrating her eleventh year. Rabbi Naomi Levy is Nashuva’s Spiritual Leader and she wrote this beautiful Prayer for our Country after the Election. The Prayer expresses what we are all feeling at this very fragile time.

Help us, God to unite our great country in the wake of a contentious election season.Teach us to listen to one another, to heal and to hope. The days that lie before us are ours to shape.Let them be days of repair, days when we join together to build a new future. For some of us the results of this election were a deep blow, for some of us those same results were a causefor celebration. Our charge today must be to rise above all conflict, to rise above our differences, and welcome in a new time of understanding.Bless us God, with ears to hear, hearts to love, and hands to reach across party lines, so that we can ensure liberty for all, dignity for all.Land of opportunity and dreams, may we treasure the freedom that is our birthright.Teach us, God, to pledge our allegiance to every soul in need and every child praying for a better tomorrow.Bless America, God, with prosperity, and with justice for all. Amen.

Rabbi Levy wrote another beautiful Prayer for Tolerance:

Teach us, God, to treasure the differences that distinguish one person from another.Fill us with the strength to overcome senseless fear and hatred.

Open our hearts to the radiance that shines forth from every human soul. Inspire us to shed our apathy; remind us that it is our obligation to be responsible for one another.

Open our ears to the cries of all who are in need of our assistance.Give us the courage to combat prejudice andintolerance wherever they exist.

Teach us to see each other through Your eyes, God.In Your eyes, all people are equally loved, equally precious.Bless us all, God with compassion, with kindness, and with peace. Amen

We are very good at asking questions and in framing many discussions around questions. I recently read about a learn-ing seminar that was to be entitled, “Why Bother” which in this case was used to mean why bother being involved in the Jewish community in 2016? To turn it around another way, a former colleague of mine taught me that the three most important words were, “might as well.”

No matter how we look at it, our community is built upon generations of shared history, stories, recipes, traditions and so on. The values that inform these blocks are built upon life lessons from Torah and our valued teachings. We rely on a system of justice, fairness and acceptance that underlies all we do. For decades there were discussions about religious practice vs modernity, which today has expanded to pressures of social media, political preferenc-es, secular choices, and an unfortunate breakdown in kind-ness and acceptance of one another in society. But Judaism offers us so much in understanding human frailties, conflict resolution, expressing gratitude and hope in the future.

Here are ten quotes that can help us cultivate gratitude each day, compiled by Sara Debbie Gutfreund. 1. “Trade your expectation for appreciation and your world changes instantly.” Tony Robbins 2. “The single greatest thing you can do to change your life right now would be to start being grateful for what you have today.” Oprah Winfrey 3. “We can complain that rose bushes have thorns or we can rejoice that thorn bushes have roses.” Abraham Lincoln 4. “Thankfulness has an inner connection with humility. It recognizes that what we are and what we have is due to others and above all, to God.” Rabbi Jonathan Sacks 5. “In the middle of every difficulty lies opportunity.” Albert Einstein 6. “Acknowledge your gifts and be grateful to the source. Because if you know from whom you are receiving, you can always go back for more.” Rabbi Noah Weinberg, z”l 7. “Reflect upon your present blessings, of which

every man has plenty instead of upon your past misfortunes, of which all men have some.” Charles Dickens 8. “Gratitude also opens your eyes to the limitless potential of the universe while dissatisfaction closes your eyes to it.” Stephen Richards 9. “For me every hour is grace. And I feel gratitude in my heart every time I can meet someone and look at his or her smile.” Elie Wiesel 10. “Learn how to be happy with what you have while you pursue all you want.” Jim Rohn

We are grateful that MUSY (Marlboro United Synagogue Youth) was selected as the USY Hagalil International Chapter of the Year! Yasher Koach to Lori Solomon, our devoted and long-time Youth Director and to the fabulous young people who bring commitment, ruach and energy to our chapter and our congregation – Jannah, Seth, Jessica, Josh, Cory, Gabbi and Shawn and their many friends and peers who make up this extraordinary team. They have embraced the traditions and values that have been passed from generation to generation. They bring joy and new expression, and their involvement proves the importance of “Why Bother?” They are the future and we are all so proud!

We are grateful that MJC has successful programs that sustain the congregation. Delicious and festive Shabbat Dinners, an amazing Texas Hold’em that brought much needed revenue, an informative Scholar-in-Residence and so much more to come. We are grateful that we have ways to get involved, give Tzedakah and participate in Social Action, sharing food for Thanksgiving and toys for the holidays.

We can express our gratitude by giving with an open hand to the MJC Wall of Honor. Each gift enriches the congrega-tion and enables us to remain financially secure. The calen-dar and tax year end during the celebration of Hanukkah, and as we light our Menorahs, the gifts we give bring light to those who receive, as well as those who give. “May the lights of Hanukkah usher in a better world for all humankind.” ~Author Unknown

RELIGIOUS SCHOOLDecember Religious School Update

Dear Families,

I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving and spent plenty of quality time with family and friends. Now that there’s a chill in the air, we’re excited to keep the warmth going at school.

We’ve had some great programming recently. The 5th and 6th graders had a lovely Shabbat dinner andservice. I’d like to give a big thank you to Cantor Teplitz, Morah Justin, Morah Robin, Morah Malca, Morah Lori and Morah Katy for preparing the stu-dents for the service. Our amazing madrichim(teenage leaders) and I led the Junior Congregation services with lots of ruach (spirit) and enthusiasm. I’m very proud of them for stepping up and serving as role models to the younger students.

Jules Cohn came once again to teach our children about Jewish National Fund and the work it does in Israel. Every student went home with a Tzedakah box that I hope is filled up during the year.

Our High School students participated in KRISTALLNACHT PROGRAM on Monday, November 14. Manfred Lindenbaum, a Holocaust survivor, came to our school to share his story. Thank you Marvin Glickstein for bringing him to our school.

On Wednesday, November 16, our 7th graderstraveled to the Jewish Heritage Museum of Monmouth County in Freehold. They attended aone-act play performed by Mr. Harlan Tuckman, “Only in Terezin: Raphael’s Story.” The play was based on the true story of Jewish-Czechoslovak composer, pianist, and conductor Rafael Schachter, an organizer of cultural life in Terezin, the “model” concentration camp near Prague. The play included interactive opportunities for students in the audience to participate.

Below are some important dates to remember:

Class Service: Friday, December 16: Grades 3-4, Dinner 7pm, Service 8:15pm

Junior Congregation: Saturday, December 17, 10:30-11:55am

ANNOUNCEMENT ABOUTHIGH HEBREW HIGH

Months ago we decided to create a Joint Hebrew High School with Temple Rodeph Torah.

After much planning and many meetings, the first gathering was on Sunday, September 11. The other clergy, lay leaders, staff and I are thrilled that the evening exceeded our expecta-tions.

The program for juniors and seniors meets once a month on Sunday nights, starting September 25. The year’s theme is ‘Packing for College’ which will be helpful to both teens and parents. Dinner will be served each Sunday.

You may know that MJC’s program for 11th and 12th graders used to meet at Fred and Murry’s Deli. Due to the large number of students from both synagogues, this is no longer feasible. However, I am aware that many of our students eagerly await their junior year to go to the deli with the rabbi.

Given that this program is so beloved andspecial, I have designated four Sundayevenings for any and all MJC 11th and 12th graders to join me for dinner at Fred and Murry’s. It will be a relaxed atmosphere with discussions on relevant topics as they relate to Jewish values. Students need not RSVP, and there is no charge – the dinners will be sponsored by thesynagogue. The dates are: December 4, January 8, March 5 and April 2.

I am glad to continue this great tradition!

Shalom,

YOUTHAs I sit down to write this I realize that this is a very different December for all of us, with Hanukkah not until the very end of the month even going into 2017! In some years we celebrate Thanksgiving with Hanukkah and this year we celebrate it along with New Year’s.

When a parent asks why my child should get involved, I always answer why not. I remember my first encampment when lifetime friends were made, every weekend was spent with my USY friends; there were dances, conventions, and many reunions. It was in USY that I first met Jay, my husband of over 25 years; it was also where I met Robin Sacks, my friend since we were 14. I still am active within regional USY with people that I have shared many life experiences with. This year I also added to my experiences of USY, when one of the kids I had when he was in high school came back with a Kadimanik of his own. Total full circle!

MUSY is honored to be one of the consistent chapters in the Hagalil region that participates in every dance, convention and regional board. It is rare that the biggest delegation to all events is not MUSY. My kids always laugh when they go to something and someone asks where you from and they say Marlboro and the response is another one!

December is always a really fun month in the Youth department, with everyone getting a chance to celebrate Hanukkah a little early. MUSY has dedicated December to Social Action and every meeting will incorporate giving back in some way, including our annual Build a Bear for Chailife Line.

December is also when USY goes to International Convention. This year we are hoping to come home with International Chapter of the year, so stay tuned to this page for further hopefully good news! If we win I keep telling everyone it will like winning our own Academy Award. If you haven’t yet found us on Facebook, please find both Marlboro Jewish Center Youth Groups and Marlboro USY for the latest of all that is happening. Two other great websites for information for Kadima and USY happenings are HagalilUSY.com and USY. Org. Have any questions? Just email me at [email protected] or call me at 732-536-2303, ext 124.

May your candles burn bright and your latkes sizzle and may 2017 bring us all good things!

Lori Solomon

Youth Director

Dear MJC Family,

L’dor v’dor. For 14 years to the joke of many, especially Jay and Matt, this simple Hebrew phrase has become a mantra of mine. Translated literally to “generation to generation,” I have started and ended many years thinking and living by the words.

To say I have been humbled by the opportunity you have given me is an understatement. Each year you, my MJC family, have allowed me into the lives of our community’s children. I’ve watched them conquer mountains, face their fears, and for some, worked with them through their darkest moments.

As the synagogue’s Youth Director, I have seen countless kids come through all levels of our programs, from Sunday mornings at Katan to Thursday nights of Marlboro USY meetings, to even more recently welcoming the kids of kids to our programs. I have been given the privilege of being more than an educator, a friend and confident, and for that I am eternally grateful.

It is because of this amazing honor and experience that with a heavy heart I am announcing that I will be leaving at the end of December. Luckily, it is for a simcha that Jay and I are leaving. Jay has accepted an offer to become the Chief Operating Officer for Aviva Senior Life, a Jewish continuing care community in Sarasota, Florida effective January 1, 2017.

To my kids, I want to say thank you. The past 14 years have been a whirlwind of laughter, joy, tears, and incredible success. Always remember that you are strong, determined, and make a difference in everything you are a part of. To my MJC family, from Matt, Jay and of course myself, thank you everyone for your years of friendship, love, and support.

Now a new generation will take our place and l’dor v’dor will continue here at MJC.

ISRAEL AFFAIRS COMMITTEE (IAC)LOTEM – MJC is developing a deeper relationship with this excellent organization. You may recall we have been doing fund raising in the Hebrew School for the past two years ($1,000 last year) with all those coins and some bills deposited into the JNF Blue Boxes. That is an ongoing relationship and the school is doing it again this year. We help LOTEM make Nature Accessible to challenged individuals. Rabbi Pont introduced the relatively new, LOTEM Mother Nature program during Rosh Hashonah and wrote about it in his November Temple Topics. Abused women and their children, living in thirteen shelters throughout Israel, now have an opportunity to enjoy nature through planned visits to parks and other outdoor environments. Of course, they are protected from their abusers while on these outings. Some of you might have personal experience or know of someone who has been in an abusive situation, so you understand the importance of this program.

We are pleased that Alisa Bodner, the LOTEM Liaison to JNF, will be visiting from Israel and will speak at a program on Sunday evening January 29th. Rabbi Pont has asked for your donations to support our goal of sponsoring just one of the thirteen shelters. Alisa will share why the program was started, how it has evolved, and the impact it has made on the lives of these women and children. Desserts and beverages will be served afterwards and you will have the opportunity to meet Alisa. You will receive more information in late December and early January, about this program.

Teen & Adult Israel Education Program Date SetThe Israel Affairs Committees of Marlboro Jewish Center and Temple Beth Ahm have planned a Teen and Adult event for Sunday afternoon, January 15th in the MJC Dining Room. You will learn about the BDS (Boycott, Divestment & Sanctions) movement, demonstrations on college campuses, and how to differentiate between anti-Israel and anti-Semitics comments. Through interactive role playing scenarios, this session will provide some techniques and tools to use whether you are the recipient of anti-Semitic comments or overhear others making them. This can

and has happened in our schools, in the community and on college campuses. Save the date of January 15th, 2017 and watch for more information about this excellent program in the next few weeks.

Israel Night at the MoviesAll dates are Sunday evenings at 7:30 PM in the MJC Dining Room. The remaining date for 2016 is 12/11 (Restoration) (D). In 2017, 1/8 The Kind Words (C/D), 2/19 The World is Funny (D), 3/19 The Wisdom of the Pretzel (C), 4/2 Wedding Doll (D) and 5/7 TBD. Note that D stands for a drama and C means a comedy. As always, FREE to MJC members and $7 for non-members, refreshments included. Watch the newsletter and your e-mail for a reminder about each date and title.

PRE SCHOOLHectic is the word that dominates the Preschool at this time of year. Everyone is busy trying to ready the children with knowledge of the Hanukkah story and the miracle of the oil. We want to instill in them the spirit of the Maccabees, as well as the comfort of our traditions (latkes, menorahs, etc.), and the joy of giving to others. All too often we hear the emphasis on the toys that they are going to get for Hanukkah. We hope that by making gifts to be used yearly at home, and by bringing in toys for the sick and needy, the children will get a positive feeling and be encouraged to find the pleasure and excitement in these acts of kindness. Teaching them about their heri-tage connects them with their Jewish past. Good deeds are also part of their heritage, past and present, we hope.

Everywhere we look there are beautiful Hanukkah decorations and bulletin boards made by the children. There are candles being made as well as menorahs, costumes, dreidels, gifts, wrapping paper and paper chains. Great songs are being sung and Hanukkah Happenings (shows) are practiced. Hanukkah workshops and Hanukkah Boutiques are all a part of the excitement. The smell of latkes and donuts are delightful, and hunger can now be added to hectic as a dominant theme! Happy faces are everywhere: happy children, happy parents, happy (if not harried) teachers!

Even though Hanukkah falls extra late this year, the children will see menorahs, candles and learn words like shamus, menorah and brachot as part of our classroom vocabulary. Opportunities to play and learn the dreidel game will be given and Hanukkah stories will be read!

I know this knowledge is brought home and shared with our preschool families. May the spirit, comfort and joy of Hanukkah fill your homes this holiday. Hag Sameach!

Upon Kindling The Yahrzeit Candle

O God, Source of life and love, we turn to You at this time of remembering,

As we light this candle in memory of our departed.

In Your Keeping, the soul of our beloved still glows, As brightly as the “heavenly firmament.”

Truly, “the human soul is the light of the Lord.”

By Your light, may we who lovingly remember see light:

And may the memory of our departed abide with us, as a lasting benediction.
