From RabbiMichael Pont

Purim is Saturday night, March 11 and Sunday, March 12. Come to hear Megillat Esther (The Scroll of Esther) at 6:45 pm, check out the kids’ costume parade, and have a hamantaschen! It is a mitzvah to have a festive meal or seudah on Purim, so join us for Brunch and Learn on Sunday at 10:00 am, after morning minyan (you can hear the megillah at minyan too). Shaloch Mones or sending gifts to friends is also a mitzvah. I hope everyone loves this year’s treats – thanks to the Purim basket committee for their efforts – deadline to order is Friday, March 3! Finally, enjoy our annual Purim Carnival on Sunday, March 12 at 11:30 am, and thank you to Marlboro USY for this marvelous event!!

Purim is a joyous, raucous holiday, yet the story has a dark side. In the second chapter Esther becomes the first Jewish Queen of Persia, wonderful news! Yet in the next chapter Haman rises to power, second only to King Achashverous. Because Esther’s Uncle Mordechai would not bow down to him, Haman concocts a plan to have the kingdom’s murdered. He tells the king, “There is a certain people … dispersed among the people in all of the provinces of your realm. Their laws are different from every other people’s and they do not observe the king’s laws; therefore it is not befitting to tolerate them. If it please the king, let it be recorded that they be destroyed…” (Esther 3:8-9)

The message to the reader/listener is clear. When you live in a non-Jewish land you may have good fortune one moment and suffering the next so be careful! Haman accuses the Jews of not obeying the king’s laws and therefore being untrustworthy, a charge that we have encountered repeatedly. This is part of what motivated Antiochus, the Hanukkah nemesis, to decree that all of his subjects should forego their religions. It also gave rise to the blood libel and to other vicious lies, leading to pogroms, expulsions, and other forms of persecution. Finally it allowed Hitler to marginalize and even dehumanize Jews, blaming us for Germany’s problems.

Yet Jews have been good citizens wherever we’ve

been. We have contributed significantly to commerce, science, the arts, and more. Even in the Purim story, only verses before Haman hatches his scheme, his archrival and our hero Mordechai foils a plot to assassinate the king. There is no reason to believe that the Jews were nothing but upstanding citizens!

But alas, it did not matter because our ancestors lived in a topsy-turvy era. Given this lack of stability, an individual like Esther had to stand up for justice for her people. This is what Mordechai told her when she wavered about whether or not to approach the king. “Do not think that you will be able to escape in the king’s palace … And who knows whether it was just for such a time as this that you attained the royal position!” (Esther 4:13-14) In other words, maybe God made it possible for her to be queen in order to save the Jews!

Purim’s messages of wariness and responsibility still very much apply today. Haman is alive, embodied in the sharp rise of anti-Semitism both in America and worldwide. We are wary, but we also must be brave like Esther and stand up to all bigotry – baseless hatred of one group spreads like a cancer to hatred of other groups. Just as Esther was one person who saved us, we too should believe that we can make a difference, as individuals and as a unified community.

To be a Jew is to have faith that God will support us in all of our endeavors, even in self-defense. We affirm this faith both on Purim and on Passover. During the seder we declare, “This promise has stood for our parents and for us in good stead. For not just one enemy has stood against us to wipe us out. But in every generation there have been those who have stood against us to wipe us out. Yet the Holy One, Blessed be He, keeps on saving us from their hands.” (Haggadah, Maggid section) May it always be so.

Shalom,

Rabbi Pont

From the PresidentRhonda Eiger

As you are all aware, Rene Kipnes, after 28 years of dedication and service to our preschool, has decided to retire. She will certainly be missed! As a result, we have created a search committee in order to find someone to fill her shoes which certainly won’t be easy. That committee is off to a great start with Jan Friedman Krupnick as the chair. They are working diligently to find the right person for the position.

We are pleased to report that we have restructured our Youth Department hierarchy to better serve our needs. One position is entitled, Youth Programming and Communications Coordinator (YPCC) and the other is entitled, Youth Advisor (YA). This will enable us to obtain some much welcomed assistance with communications at MJC. Our Communications Coordinator will be working on our new website, a computerized calendar for all schools, commit-tees and offices at MJC, the weekly email, all email blasts and Temple Topics. Ethan Weg, will assume the YPCC position. He is a seasoned USY regional and summer trips staff person, and he holds a degree in media communications and Jewish Studies. Zach Wainer, who currently teaches at MJC and has many years of experience with USY, has agreed to accept the YA position. We are excited to have them both on board and we are looking forward to keeping high standards for MUSY, the 2015/2016 International Chapter of the Year.

The Nominating Committee will start meeting soon to determine who will be added to next year’s board. The Committee is always looking for new people to volunteer and assist the MJC community. I encour-age you to please reach out to me if you are inter-ested in volunteering. We will be getting started soon and only a few spots are available.

On Saturday night, March 25, 2017 we will honor Jeff Katz, our Immediate Past President, and Howard & Paulette Albert. These honorees have distinguished themselves through their dedication and generosity. We are having a dueling piano show at the event and it should be an enjoyable evening. It is not too late to sign up for the dinner.

It is especially nice when the community comes together to enjoy special occasions and nice events. We should all be here in the good times and the bad. Remember, together, we can continue to make a dif-ference and make MJC thrive. Yachad anachnu yeco-lim laasot et hevdel.

Rabbi Jonathan Sacks recorded a beautiful video this week called “Being an inspiring parent.” “Make Your Judaism Sing.” He looks at the role that music and song have in instilling a love of Judaism in our chil-dren. Rabbi Sacks was sitting one day with the then Chief Rabbi of Israel, Rabbi Avraham Shapira who told a fascinating story about two great Torah sages of the 19th century, one whose children stayed firm and within the faith and became great Rabbis themselves and the other of whom sadly his children became disillusioned and left the fold. And he said to me the difference was the Seudah Shlishit, the third meal of Shabbat. The two sages conducted the Seudah shlishit completely differently. One of them gave a brilliant and very complex d’var Torah; the other one sang zemirot and nigunim. He said; guess which one’s chil-dren stayed with the faith. It’s not a tough one. The one that sang the music kept their children, kept his children within the faith.

Never think that religion, that Judaism is just cognitive. It’s affective. It’s not just a matter of the mind. It’s a matter of the emotions and music is the language of the emotions. And whatever happened to the music? For heaven’s sake, when the Israelites crossed through the Sea of Reeds, “Az yashir Moshe uv’nay Yisrael.” They sang a song. They didn’t give speeches. They didn’t sit and learn a tract from the Talmud. They sang a song.

David HaMelech who’s the great singer of Israel, wrote the most immortal songs. Yes, he wrote the original Halleluyah that Leonard Cohen wrote about, the secret chord that pleased God. Shlomo HaMelech who wrote “Shir Hashirim,” the Song of Songs. For heaven’s sake, let Judaism sing. Think of this moment. Almost the last moment of Moses’s life. Here he is 119, 11 months and many days. He’s within sight of the end of his life. And he’s given 612 commands to Israel. You and I would probably at the age of 119, if we’re

given 612 commands, call it a day. That’s a pretty good career average, but Moshe Rabbeinu said no. There’s one more command I have to give the Israelites. What was that command? The last of the 613. “V’ata kitvu lachem et hashira hazot.” The Mitzvah that each of us must write a Sefer Torah, or take part in the writing of a Sefer Torah. Rambam would say, “even though your parents or your family has an heirloom, you’ve inherited from your parents, it’s not enough. You have to write one for yourself or take part even in the writ-ing of one letter, is enough for yourself.” What was Moshe Rabbeinu thinking? I tell you what I think he was thinking. He was thinking, I’m about to leave this generation behind. And I want them to know one thing. Don’t think it’s enough that your parents or you receive the Torah from Moshe Rabbeinu. You have to take the Torah and make it new in every generation. And what did he call the Torah at that moment? He did not say, “V’ata kitvu lachem et haTorah hazot.” He said, “V’ata kitvu lachem et hashira hazot.” Write this song, not write this book. What he meant was if you want to hand on the Torah to your children, so they will write a Sefer Torah and make it new for their gen-eration, teach it as a song. Not just a speech. Speech is the language of the mind. Song is the language of the soul. And if we want Judaism to live on in our children and across the generations, we have not just to say the words, we have to sing the song. We have not just to think the thoughts, we have to let Judaism sing. So, make sure that yours is a home full of music, full of warmth, full of emotion. Sing your Judaism and it will sing for your children.

Congregation Ohev Shalom

March 2017 - Page 7

In the Purim story, Haman is the infamous villain known for wanting to destroy the Jews. Of course we all know that his plot to execute Mordechai was foiled by Queen Esther, and Jewish life prevailed. Many of the elements of contemporary Jewish life and modern day drama filled the script: family loyalty, Anti-Semitism, political infighting, intermarriage, and mostly the age old adage of Kol Yisrael Arevim Zeh Bazeh, all Jews are responsible one for the other. The understanding that we all have communal respon-sibility for each other carries through the generations. We are all obliged to step up whenever and wherever we see a Jew suffering, in need, or in danger, and even to share a simcha.

To symbolize the evil Haman and to remember the importance of defeating evil in every generation, to this day we eat Hamantaschen! The triangular shape is like Haman’s three sided hat. Hamantashen is actually a Yiddish word that means Haman’s pockets. In one explanation I read, they may also represent Esther’s strength and the three Patriarchs: Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. In any reference, the importance of eating Hamantaschen remains remembering the story about how once again, Jews were threatened and prevailed. The celebration of Purim is joyous, and the traditional fillings of “Haman’s pockets” are sweet and interest-ing. There’s room for diversity and personal choice, savory or sugary, and with different types of texture. What a nice way to be reminded of history and our connections to one another.

Besides the observance of Purim - which will of course include Mishloach Manot, a traditional Megillah read-ing, a costume parade and the USY Purim Carnival - March will be filled with many other services, obser-vance, life cycle events and programs at MJC. The Biannual Journal Gala will be held on March 25th in honor of Jeff Katz, Immediate Past President and Paulette and Howard Albert, long time congregants who will be the recipients of the Ohev Shalom Award.

It seems appropriate to me that the Gala follows in the same month as Purim. Our honorees embody the indi-vidual and collective traits and responsibilities that are

recalled when we eat Hamantaschen. They each own the story of our people and through their actions they strengthen our synagogue and the future of our com-munity. By stepping forward to accept the position of President, Jeff became a guarantor of all the values and goals that MJC has represented for more than four decades. He acted as a spokesperson and leader, with his quiet wisdom and business skill driving him to develop consensus and sustain the congregation through another successful two year tenure, building upon the good works of the presidents who preceded him. Paulette and Howard have been members of MJC almost since the very beginning, raising their children here and now their grandchildren. Their humble nature kept them behind the scenes, always being gen-erous and supportive. They recognized the importance of making an significant contribution through their business to donate and install major HVAC equipment for both of our sacred buildings. It was their way of making a difference in a meaningful way.

Just to complete my thoughts about Hamantaschen, our honorees are like the filling! While we recognize their individual efforts, I would like to suggest that in the spirit of Klal Yisrael, their attributes are best expressed through the wholeness of the congregation. It is in the collective that we celebrate their achieve-ments. If you haven’t already responded, please join with us on March 25th to honor each of them for an evening of dining, dueling pianos, and communal fes-tivity. You can call the office to RSVP. The couvert is $90 per person, which can be covered through selling ads in our journal. Keep in mind that this is a chari-table contribution that enables us to carry on the work of the congregation.

The Hebrew month of Adar is known as the month of happiness and celebration. Please celebrate with us at MJC and enjoy your Hamantaschen in all its delicious flavors!

RABBI PONT’S HEBREW SCHOOL UPDATE

I enjoy teaching our B’nai Mitzvah and post-B’nai Mitzvah students, in a few different settings. I. 7TH GRADE - I meet with the 7th graders every Wednesday from 4:30 – 5:30 pm, focusing on ethics and Jewish values. Tzedakah was the main topic in January and February. Also, each student shares his or her Bar/Bat Mitzvah speech or D’var Torah with the class, and the students offer feedback. I thank Cantor Krieger who came as a guest teacher last month. II. CONFIRMATION - We have a small Confirmation class, and I have been meeting with them on select Sunday mornings and some evenings. We learn about and discuss contemporary issues and Jewish values, including anti-Semitism, tzedakah, and interpersonal relations. This month, we will focus onPurim! The students will put on a skit for families with young children, before the Megillah reading onSaturday evening, March 11. For the remainder of the school year, the 10th graders will also be a part ofthe High Hebrew High program.

III. HIGH HEBREW HIGH (HHH) is at Fred and Murrys. Last month the students met with teens whoare recovering addicts. They described how they got hooked on drugs and their ongoing journeys towellness. I partnered with New Hope Integrated Behavioral Health Care on Conover Road in Marlboro; I am a trustee of this outstanding organi-zation. The teens speak regularly in school, youth group and camp settings. Addiction is an epidemic in America and a crisis in our community. Thankfully, rates have been declining among young people, due in part to education. It is critical that our students learn about the dangers of drugs, from their peers who know firsthand. It was a powerful evening. This month, HHH will also learn more about Purim.

If you have questions or suggestions, please let me know!

Shalom,

Rabbi Pont

MIRIAM DOBIN

Miriam Dobin is married with three children and has worked as an Early Childhood educator for over 20 years. Upon the death of her beloved aunt, Miriam promised herself that the time had come to write the family history. Her task took her deep into the family records and half way around the world to the places where her parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins lived before they were imprisoned in Nazi concentration camps and where almost all of them were killed. Miriam was raised not only by her two parents but also by her aunt and uncle, all four of them survivors. Together these four individuals reared a child, who for them, embodied a future that they could hardly have believed would ever come.

Winter is almost at its end. As I write this, it feels like spring is close by. I hope everyone is well and stays well.

This winter has brought much sadness to us. We have lost two dear friends. Phyllis Schnall, who was a delightful “Feisty Phil” as her family called her. She fought hard with her illness. Gertrude Clair, a wonderful, bright, strong woman who got around Greenbriar even when it was difficult for her. We will miss these wonderful ladies dearly.

Our synagogue is busy arranging for our Gala Dinner honoring Jeff Katz, Immediate Past President, and Howard & Paulette Albert, Ohev Shalom Award on March 25. Please try to make plans to attend. Also you can still make a donation to MJC and to JNF to build housing for battered women and children in Israel.

Prime Timer’s first meeting of the season will be April 6. Looking forward to seeing all of you. Bring friends – new members are always welcome.

On Sunday, March 26 many of us are looking forward to seeing the play In the Heights at the Axelrod Theatre in Deal. On Sunday, June 11, I have reserved 25 tickets for La Cage Aux Folles at the Axelrod Theater as well. I am now taking reservations and checks. The cost is $29.

Enjoy the start of Daylight Savings Time on March 12.

Enjoy - Be Nice - Be good to each other.

ISRAEL AFFAIRS COMMITTEE (IAC)LOTEM – Mother Nature Project –

I wanted to share excerpts from the thank you letter being sent to the donors who helped us reach our goal of $10,000. We will make an impact as explained below.

The full amount of all donations will be sent through the Jewish National Fund, directly to their partner LOTEM Mother Nature (LMN). Sponsoring one of the thirteen shelters enables the abused women and children living there, to spend time in the outdoors away from the safety of the shelter. Each trip requires social workers, transportation, trained program facili-tators, finding/adapting a local outdoors area for this program and security. A typical outing will last approximately ten hours. There will be four trips dur-ing the year for up to 25 shelter residents each time. If 25 residents are taken out for ten hours on each trip, 250 “contact hours” of emotional support is provided.

Over four trips that is 1,000 hours, or just $10 per “contact hour. LMN “stretches” our $10,000 contri-bution with other funds they receive, to provide this outdoor experience.

LMN will provide the MJC Community with peri-odic updates on “our shelter” and how the program is progressing. Watch the Temple Topics and Weekly Newsletter for information. Additional donations are welcome to support this program. They can be sent to the office and should be made out to MJC-JNF.

Israel Night at the MoviesAll dates are Sunday evenings at 7:30 PM in the MJC Dining Room. In 2017, 3/19 The Wisdom of the Pretzel (C), 4/2 Wedding Doll (D) and 5/7 TBD. Note that D stands for a drama and C means a comedy. As always, FREE to MJC members and $7 for non-members, refreshments included.

PRE SCHOOLWe had a wonderful full month of February. We celebrated FUNruary in a variety of amazing ways. The highlights of course, as always, were Beach Day, Wild Things Day and our Shabbat Delight. Some of our moms came in to make challahs with us. We sent home these beautiful challahs with the children for Shabbat. They were delicious and the children were so excited to take them home and share with their families.

Now we are here in March already and preparing for our Purim festivities. We have begun baking our Hamantaschen. The children are real pros and excited to continue with our baking experiences. They will make the hamantaschen to add to our Shalach Manot baskets which they are currently busy decorating for their families. They have also made their very own groggers. But, Purim would not be fun without mak-ing the costumes representing the children’s favorite

characters. The children have decorated costumes of Haman, Mordecai, King Ahasuerus or Queen Esther. They made hats and crowns to wear with their cos-tumes, too! They will be able to don this attire and excitedly follow the footprints to our school Purim carnival. They enjoy playing a variety of games and the older children will make megillahs and will have a Purim party to celebrate.

We then turn to spring. A multitude of lions and lambs are created at each age. Kites and pussy willows are also displayed and we discuss windy March and the first signs of spring. Science projects involving wind will be experienced in different variations depending on the ages. We will be excited to play outside and enjoy the fresh air. Before we turn around, Pesach will be the topic of discussion. It’s hard to believe how quickly this year is flying by.

Men’s Club at MJC is working hard to deliver great programming and we’ve been busy this winter and we have a great spring planned. In early February, we ran our annual Build a Pair for our 6th grade Hebrew class. The students learned about Tefellin while making their own pair, they learned how to lay Tefellin and had a very interactive learning session with Rabbi Koas. It was a fun afternoon for all who attended. Many came back a few days later on Super Bowl Sunday for the annual Men’s Club World Wide Wrap, when Men’s Clubs around the U.S. participate in the Mitzvah of Tefellin. Both days were a lot of fun.

Moving forward, we have a busy spring planned.

On Sunday March 12the from 1:30 – 4:30, we once again visit the Silverball Museum in Asbury Park for a fun afternoon of pinball. We had a big turnout last year, get your kids away from their screens and let them see how much fun they can have with us. RSVP to Lance Adleson at [email protected] or for more details.

March 17th, we will lead our annual Men’s Club Shabbat and many will join us for the dinner beforehand. We welcome all members and their families to attend and participate in either Hebrew or English, More info will come out shortly, if you like, please contact David Riklan [email protected] or Jay Seliber [email protected] to get more info or sign up for a part.

March 26th is our annual Yellow Candle program pack day for Yom Hashoah. We need lots of help packing up candles and delivering the many routes before Yom Hashoah on April 23. This is a great program with your kids, they are always a great help in packing and delivering candles with you. Please contact Steve Landau at [email protected] for more information on this program.

The Sefer Haftorah will make its semi annual return to MJC on April 15th. Please join us during Shabbat morning services for this programming. More details to come in the next Temple Topics.

Steak & Scotch night was a great success last year and its coming back again. On April 26th, join your MJC friends and feel free to bring others to this fun and delicious evening out. Contact Len Whitman [email protected] or Jeff Katz [email protected] for more information and to RSVP.

We are searching for a speaker for a Breakfast meeting in late April or May. More details will follow on this once we have someone. We hope you can join us.

Haimisha Helper was started a couple of years ago as an effort to help those who need some extra assistance in your home for small tasks you may not be able to do. We have helped with small things such as changing light bulbs and batteries, moving some boxes out to the curb and even furniture to make rehabilitation easier for one of our Temple members. We are a group of Men who are here to assist you in you need it, there is no payment and no judgement. Whether you need help for the short term or more, we want to help you. Please let us do a mitzvah and reach out to Alan Greenberg at 732-861-8433 or by email at [email protected] so we can be there for you.

The Sisterhoods of MJC & TRT PresentMeet the AuthorJessica Fishman

Having grown up in a Midwestern Jewish and Zionist family, Jessica Fishman moved to Israel after graduating from Indiana University with a degree in Journalism and Business. She spent her first few years in the country serving in the Israel Defense Forces, learning the Hebrew language, and getting acclimated to the country. Jessica Fishman has written a number of articles about Israel and her story has been featured in leading Israeli and Jewish media.

After developing the popular Aliyah Survival Blog, which is an irreverent portrayal of an American immigrant’s first years in Israel, she has written a deeply personal, witty memoir about the difficulties, absurdities, and excitement of making a home in a new country.

She was inspired to write Chutzpah and High Heels: The Search for Love and Identity in the Holy Land after a life-changing event in Israel. Her goals are to share her experience and inspire social change. The book will be available for sale February 7th, 2017

YAHRZEITS - MARCH

Upon Kindling The Yahrzeit Candle

O God, Source of life and love, we turn to You at this time of remembering, As we light this candle in memory of our departed.

In Your Keeping, the soul of our beloved still glows, As brightly as the “heavenly firmament.”Truly, “the human soul is the light of the Lord.”

By Your light, may we who lovingly remember see light:And may the memory of our departed abide with us, as a lasting benediction.
