2 Temple Sinai News

A condensed version of my remarks at our annual meeting on May 27th.

When you read this, my two-year term as president of Temple Sinai will be over. So, how did we do?

A primary measure of the temple’s health is our membership, which has remained at 1100-1150 member units. This is actually an achievement because many Reform congregations in the Northeast are

shrinking or merging. In addition, our finances continue to be in order, and we successfully completed a transition to a new, superb clergy team.

These are important accomplishments. However, at my installation in June 2013, I said I wanted to focus on community, engagement, and meaning. How have we performed along these dimensions?

Community is central to Temple Sinai. Reflecting its importance, our theme in 5774 was, “Creating a Caring Community,” and, this year, it is, “The Open Tent.”

Thus, for example, we launched the Kathie Rabinovitz SinaiCares Program this year. Its initial aim is to care for members of our community who are homebound and/or elderly.

Groups flourish within the temple. Some, like Parents of Young Adults Who Struggle (YAWS), provide support to members. Others, like the MRJ and WRJ, offer programming and support important temple activities.

People also form smaller communities here. For example, our monthly, lay-led Kehillat Shabbat Service has developed a community of regular participants as have Torah study on Saturday mornings and our choir.

Lastly, we provide opportunities for our entire community to gather at the High Holy Days and at events like the Tricia Davis 5K for Sinai House, which had over 400 registrants who ran, walked, celebrated, and raised money together.

One marker of our commitment to fostering engagement is through the hiring earlier this year of our development director, Mark Spira. People have to feel connected to an institution to want to give to it and therefore our new development effort will require us to partner with our members and understand why Sinai is meaningful to each of us. That is why I believe that moving toward a philanthropic culture will benefit us not just monetarily but in greater member engagement.

The success of the Tricia Davis 5K for Sinai House suggests that we start from a good place. It raised $80,000 – which

is more than we used to get from Fannie Mae and well over our $40,000 target and only happened because members feel connected and engaged.

The last item is meaning. It is hard to measure, but sometimes it is possible to see that people find deep meaning in what we do at the temple.

For example, I had the honor of sitting on the bimah for the adult b’nai mitzvah service on Shavuot, and each person read a very moving personal statement. It was clear that the whole two-year process, culminating with reading from the Torah, was deeply meaningful to each of them.

Community, engagement, and meaning have always been important at Temple Sinai. Over the past two years, we strengthened them further, and I am confident that we will build on that strong foundation in the years to come.

I am delighted that Andrew Engel has succeeded me and that we continue to have a superb group of officers and trustees. I leave office knowing that Temple Sinai will be in good hands.

I thank everyone on the staff – the facilities and security team, the front office staff, our religious school and nursery school personnel and leadership, and the clergy – for their hard work and commitment to the temple and the congregation.

I especially thank:

The officers and trustees for their incredible commitment to the temple. We are fortunate that such a talented group of people is willing to put in the time and hard work for Temple Sinai’s benefit.

Rabbi Roos. As I have learned, being a successful, effective senior rabbi requires an unusual combination of intelligence, people skills, and leadership ability. We are extraordinarily fortunate to have him as our senior rabbi.

Ellen Agler. Similarly, I have learned that being a successful, effective executive director requires an unusual combination of intelligence, people skills, and management ability. We are extraordinarily fortunate to have her as our executive director.

It has been a pleasure and a privilege to work with everyone.

Lastly, I thank you, the membership of Temple Sinai, for giving me the opportunity to serve as president of this wonderful synagogue. I have really enjoyed it and am grateful to you for your trust and support. Thank you.

3Temple Sinai News

As we move into our summer mode, we are presented with opportunity. The opportunity to recharge, the opportunity to re-assess, to re-envision ourselves and the goals we make in our lives. At the temple there are fewer special events, fewer B’nai Mitzvah ceremonies; religious school takes its summer hiatus providing more opportunity to take the space for us to breathe. It provides the time to shift our focus towards the future as we re-set on own goals and plan the upcoming year for our community. The summer can be a time filled with transformative potential.

Although there are fewer Jewish holiday observances during the summer months, there is one very dramatic one, the commemoration of Tisha B’Av (“the ninth of Av”). This is the annual fast day which remembers the destruction of the First Temple (586 BCE) and the Second Temple (70 CE) in Jerusalem. It is a day of serious sorrow and reflective repentance. Its negative gravitational pull seems to have attracted other historical

disasters on or near that date for our people, including our expulsion from European countries in the Middle Ages.

Both the Shabbat before and the one after Tisha B’Av have special names and meaning in our liturgy. The Shabbat before, named Shabbat Hazon, is called the Sabbath of vision for the prophetic reading from Isaiah (1:1-27). After recounting all of the horrible transgressions of our people, it offers the hope of reconciliation which will come when we “cease to do evil and learn to do good”. While the Shabbat following Tisha B’Av, is called Shabbat Nachamu (Shabbat of Consolation).

This summer we are going to focus on the themes of Shabbat Hazon (Vision) on July 25, the day before Tisha B’Av. Instead of focusing on the sadness and destruction, we will use the day before Tisha B’Av, Shabbat Hazon, as an opportunity to do good, and to put our positive energy into re-building our city. We will have the opportunity to “Pray with our Feet”. We will use the moment to re-envision our modern response to this very sad and difficult time in our history by using our hands and our minds to do good in our community. See below for the details of what our mission will be on that Shabbat.

The next seven Shabbatot, starting with Shabbat Nachamu will then move us from the desolation of Tisha B’Av toward our personal preparation emotionally and spiritually for the upcoming High Holy Days in the fall.

May we find numerous ways this summer to create our own space to be able to re-charge our lives. May we seize the opportunity each moment can provide. May we live our lives with intention as we continue to strive to act justly, love mercy and to walk humbly with our God. (Micah 6:8)

PRAYING WITH OUR FEETSaturday, July 25 at 11 AM

Our regularly scheduled Torah Study will be held at the temple. We will also hold “Praying With Your Feet” Shabbat service projects at A Wider Circle. This is a wonderful opportunity to observe Shabbat through tikkun olam, repairing the world. Volunteers at A Wider Circle will help load furniture, restock household items, sort through donations, repair objects, and whatever else may be needed. People will be broken up into small teams, and there will be projects for children of any age.

Learn more and sign up at templesinaidc.org/act/praying-with-our-feet.

NEW STORY LEADERSHIP SHABBAT & CATERED DINNERFriday, June 26 at 6:30 PM

We will hear from participants in the New Story Leadership program. Founded in 2009, NSL selects emerging Israeli and Palestinian leaders and trains them into a team ready to help build a better future for their two communities. Ten university students, five from Israel and five from Palestine, come to Washington DC every summer for an intensive program of workshops, conferences, seminars, professional work exposure, cultural immersion and team training in the use of the narrative method. Each student also submits a proposal for a Project for Change to be implemented in the region after the summer program ends. To learn more, please visit newstoryleadership.org.

During our Shabbat service, these students will speak about their experiences here and in the Middle East and will share their personal stories and hope for the future. Plan to stay for a catered dinner following the service for a chance to get to know these students better. RSVP for dinner at june26dinner.eventbrite.com.

LIBRARY NEWS

Summer has finally arrived and “beach reading” beckons. Check out the kiosk for many new books that delight. If you are looking for more serious reading, the new non-fiction section is next to the librarian’s desk. A very informative and accessible book, The New Reform Judaism, by Rabbi Dana Evan Kaplan, not only outlines the history of Reform Jewish thought, but lays out his philosophy that “Reform Judaism must determine how to engage the individual in a search for existential meaning,” if we are to negotiate a time of “great upheaval.”

Ordinary British stockbroker Nicholas Winton organized the rescue of 669 children before the outbreak of World War II, and didn't tell a soul for fifty years. Celebrate his 106th birthday by viewing his inspiring untold story in Nicky's Family, located on the DVD shelf, along with lots of entertaining Israeli and other movies.

As we continue to cull and update our collection, our focus recently is on the reference and the Holocaust sections. We thank Rabbi Rosenwasser (reference) and Dr. Chris Lourie (Holocaust) for their valued advice. If you are interested in these areas, you will find more recent scholarship in the many new books.

A reminder that the library catalogue is available online. Go to the Temple Sinai website, click “Learn,” then “Library.” Scroll to Library Catalogue. The Encyclopedia Judaica is also available, but you need to email the librarian, Ruth Polk, at [email protected] for the password.

Over the summer, the librarian’s hours will vary. If you would like assistance, either confirm with the temple office that Ruth Polk will be in or email her at [email protected]. You can use the library any time the building is open; if the library is locked, ask the guard or the front desk to open the door for you. You may check out books, using our honor system, to the left of the door.

For information about volunteer opportunities in the library, contact either Janis Colton ([email protected]) or Herb Mintz ([email protected]), co-chairs of the library committee.

Guest Speaker: Dr. Richard Breitman, ProfessorDepartment of History, American University

Dr. Breitman will discuss the history of the creation of the state of Israel in 1948, focussing upon the period from World War I and the League of Nations to 1948 and the recommendation of the United Nations to create Jewish and Arab states out of Palestine. Be prepared for insights into some of the intrigues and politics of this chaotic period following World War II.

Richard Breitman is author or co-author of ten books and many articles in German history, U.S. history, and the Holocaust. He served as director of historical research for the Nazi War Criminal Records and Imperial Japanese Records Interagency Working Group, which helped to bring about de-classification of more than eight million pages of U.S. government records under a 1998 law. He is editor of the scholarly journal Holocaust and Genocide Studies. He is Distinguished Professor in History at American University.

Everyone is welcome. Bring a brown bag lunch and visit with your friends before the program. Cookies, fruit, coffee and tea are provided. 8 Temple Sinai News

To the entire Temple Sinai community, we want to thank everyone who participated in the First Annual Tricia Davis 5K for Sinai House. We had an amazing turnout of 200 runners/walkers with 407 people who signed up. With the help of two grants, one from the Davis family and the other for a matching grant from the Cafritz family we raised close to $80,000.

This was a community effort with help from the Nursery School, the Religious School students who collected money and made posters, and the Religious School staff who helped with the celebration. We also could not have done the race or the celebration without the support of our clergy and staff at the temple. In spite of moving the celebration inside due to rain, nothing seemed to dampen our spirits.

Start training now! Next year’s race and celebration will be on May 22, 2016.

Thanks to JD Baker Photography for the amazing photos from the race and celebration. You can find full photo coverage on JD’s website: jdbakerphotography.com/events.

SPRINGTIME AT TSNS

Springtime brings two very special events to our community. In April, we held our annual Special Visitors’ Day and Art Show. Special adults in the children’s lives were invited to view the children’s work in the Temple Sinai foyer, which was transformed into an art gallery. Afterwards, the visitors got a glimpse of what it is like to be a student in the nurturing and creative classrooms of TSNS and enjoyed an activity together with the children in their classes. Weeks of preparation are involved in this culminating event.

Teachers in the Gurim class (3 year olds) wove dance and music into their children’s experiences throughout the year as a part of their Long Term Investigation, “The Art of Moving”. The innovative idea of a wood dance floor was placed in the classroom where children freely took tap shoes off the shelves and in their special ways, engaged in their own style of tap. There was no right or wrong way to move and dance.

At right is a photograph of the Gurim children in the art gallery. They are looking at the dance shoes they had initially designed on paper and the real shoes they decorated based on their original designs. The children were shown inspirational photos of different shoe designs and then they created the observational drawings of dance shoes you can see in the black frames on the exhibit tables. The process took a lot of patience for three year olds!

In May, to enhance their study of Life Cycles, the Devorim class (Pre-K children) decided to continue their tradition of hatching chicks right in their classroom. As you can, imagine the experience of observing the process before their very eyes was exhilarating. The chicks became a part of the learning in the room as children were guided in the gentle handling and care of them. When visitors arrive, the Devorim report their observations of the hatching process and they describe the chicks’ behaviors and personalities.

Young children are eager to learn, they have great potential for understanding the world around them and their critical thinking is developed through genuine, hands-on experiences like these!

SOCIAL ACTION UPDATE: WHEATLEY BOOK FAIR SUCCESS!

Special thanks to Temple Sinai “Book Whisperers,” led by Debby Litt, who guided third and fourth graders in selecting books to take home and read over the summer! This is Temple Sinai’s second year sponsoring a book fair for students of the Wheatley Education Campus in the Trinidad neighborhood of Washington, DC. This simple intervention has been shown to prevent summer reading slide, a major contributor to the poorer reading performance of low income children.

Story telling is a part of our Jewish tradition—it connects us with each other and our shared history, and binds us together for the future. Sinai Stories is a series about our own connections to one another, Temple Sinai, and the larger Jewish community. If you are interested in sharing your story, please email coordinator Marcie Solomon at [email protected].

SNOWMAGEDDON — AND OUR COMMUNITY ROSE UPAndrea & Jonathan Berlowe Binder

If you lived in this area in February 2010, you’ll recall something called “Snowpocalypse” or “Snowmageddon.” But for us, Saturday, February 6, 2010, was evidence of the incomparable value of our Sinai community because that day our daughter Rachel was called to the Torah as a bat mitzvah with Naomi Weiner.

During a Wednesday rehearsal, both families were optimistic despite dire weather predictions. With each passing day, however, the forecast loomed ominously. Friends and relatives called to say flights had been cancelled in anticipation of the storm, or plans to drive down now seemed ill-advised. We did not want anyone to risk traveling in dangerous conditions, but we couldn’t help feeling disappointed.

It seemed every phone call brought another disappointment, but those we received from Rabbi Jessica Oleon and Cantor Laura Croen did the opposite. Both made every effort to sustain our morale, offer creative options, and ultimately assure us that they would be there on Shabbat morning if we wanted to go forward as planned. Congregant and event planner Pam Brown reassured us about our social hall celebration. And when Rabbi Oleon stopped by our home on Friday afternoon to check in and give Rachel a hug, our spirits lifted. While there, she even gave us a tzitzit-tying lesson so we could all help complete the tallit Rachel would wear the next day. Might we actually make lemonade from these snowy lemons?

On Friday night we didn’t fully appreciate the monumental effort it would take to bring everything together the next morning. When we awoke, however, it was clear that extraordinary measures were required to make it all happen. And those were what we got! Saturday began with more challenges when we got two more calls. First, shuttle buses to ferry guests to the synagogue couldn’t make it. Next, our photographer, who promised to stay at a nearby hotel on Friday, changed his mind without notice and could no longer make the 40-mile drive. It was time for Plan B (or F or Q or whatever we had reached)!

Neighbors loaned us their SUVs as shuttles, and many others were outside early digging them out to help get us moving. Finally we piled into our old Subaru 4WD wagon and set out. When we arrived, we found Sinai staff shoveling the driveway and entrance; some had even spent the night to ensure they could get the building in shape the next morning. We changed into our bat mitzvah finery and tried to prepare for the reason we were there. When Rachel and Naomi saw each other, both were ready to do what they had practiced for months, and they embraced with all the excitement expected of two 13-year-old girls. Gallons of lemonade!

As friends and family began to arrive, it was clear we all were in for a special experience. Some guests had been ferried there by loaned SUVs, others walked, and a couple cross-country skied! Judy Licht, another congregant, was there to photograph the Weiners and, when she learned the story of our no-show photographer, first offered to take photos of our family, then agreed to stay and photograph our party. We learned later that she and husband Rick Tempchin provided crucial assistance in setting up the party because Pam’s assistants couldn’t make it. More lemonade!

To say Rachel and Naomi rose to the occasion would be a gross understatement of their achievements that morning. Of course we are not objective, but they showed a degree of calm and poise, particularly inspiring under the circumstances, that set the tone for everyone. As we looked out at the assembled friends and family, clergy and staff, we were reminded of the true meaning and value of our community and the critical role it plays in our lives. Of course it’s easy to be there for others when the going is smooth or doesn’t involve any additional effort. On that morning, however, the going was far from smooth and the additional effort involved was extraordinary. But there they were. Our village. And we are eternally grateful for them and the truckloads of lemonade they helped produce.
