Picture it, a rabble of exhausted Jews,
scrambling up a dusty hill, slipping
and sliding on the loose pebbles,
clinging to each other for strength.
Just one snapshot of the Temple
Sinai Fifth Annual Retreat. Attended
by a hundred people, there were so
many memorable moments. But the
thing that was most pleasing was that
the purpose for which Temple Sinai
exists, namely warm and welcoming community, lifelong learning, soulful
worship and social justice came alive in the course of the event. It is such
a pleasure to be part of a vibrant community which lives its values.
An event where Jews learn, pray and deepen relationships with each other
is an ideal event in my book. The best part of it was that all the
generations were together, kids, parents, grandparents, enjoying each
other’s company and bringing a dynamism to the experience. The aim of
a retreat is to enclose the participants in a rather intense bubble of Jewish
community which encapsulates the best of what Judaism has to offer. A
bubble, because they are away from their normal environment,
particularly since there is no cell phone coverage. Intense because they are
living with people instead of just seeing them on Friday night or Saturday
morning. At the other end of the retreat, you drive from Mount
Charleston only around thirty minutes to your house and you feel like you
have been on a different planet! You return refreshed and reinvigorated,
recommitted to the values that are important to our shul.
Therefore, it behooves me to make mention of Jackie and Shel Kolner,
our redoubtable Retreat Committee chairs along with their wonderful
partners in crime, Laura Sussman, Eileen Sherman, Nancy Sherman,
Aimee Knox, Josh Knox, Eileen and Bob Levin, Les Gilbert, Ryan
Reisman, Suzanne Feigenson and Dr. Sharon Knafo. I appreciate
everything you did. Now for next year!

President’s Message
“Take time to gather up the past so that you will be able to draw
from your experience and invest them in the future.” Jim Rohn
This past year as your President has come and gone in the blink
of an eye. With my second year already under way, I must thank
the outgoing board for their exemplary service and dedication. I
am also excited to work beside our new Board in accomplishing
future goals for our temple. Our hardworking staff in our
Temple, Religious School, and Shenker Academy are all working
incredibly well to provide the congregation with a fantastic
experience at Temple Sinai.
Some of our achievements over the past year include;
Our first High Holy Days within the new Sanctuary. This year will be even better, in
part with the arrival of our new books for services at our holiest of times.
Congregational Dinners – The opportunity to enjoy each other’s company and get to
know one another has been incredibly successful. Please take the time to take part in
upcoming dinners.
Event Center Rental – We have made a significant amount of revenue by renting out
our event center for private functions. Please consider our event center for your next
celebration!
Membership and Religious School – Great strides have been made in regards to
increasing our overall membership and in our religious school due to our innovative
programs in both areas.
Shenker Academy – An increase in student registration at Shenker has been due to the
hard working staff. In particular, Director Sharon Knafo who has led Shenker in
providing a top notch education to all of the children.
Quarterly Town Hall Meetings – These meetings have provided an informal
atmosphere for staff and congregants to discuss issues facing Temple Sinai. I urge
every member to attend one of these meetings so that we can all be a part of
informational sharing critical to our success.
Youth Programs – Our teen retreat was led by Rabbi Cohen and run by Brian
Williams and Michelle and Isaac Cohen with 15 teenagers in attendance to learn more
about their Judaism and themselves. We also had a recent pool party that 25 kids
attended and had a blast swimming at the Shapiro residence!
These achievements are just some of the highlights that occurred over the last year. We
are planning even more events and functions to give more and more opportunities for
membership engagement. After all, Temple Sinai IS “Your Family, Your Home.”

Religious School News
Rebecca Shira Knafo-Winger daughter of Dina Rudaizky and Dr. Sharon Knafo, and sister to Joseph, will become a Bat Mitz-vah on July 4th in Temple Sinai. Rebecca grew up in Memphis Tennessee and Houston Texas. Rebecca is a seventh grader at The Dr. Miriam and Sheldon G. Adelson Educational Cam-pus, a student and Madricha at Temple Sinai Religious School. She enjoys being part of the Israeli Scouts, and a member of her school’s band where she plays the clari-net. Rebecca is a competitive swimmer at the Las Vegas Swim Club, and at the Adelson middle school swim team. As a granddaughter to Holocaust survivors, Rebecca dedicated her last two years to explore the escape of the Danish Jews. She won first place in Houston, Texas for best history fair exhibit, and represented Houston at the State of Texas History Fair. Rebecca continues to make the world aware of her family’s story and her Bat Mitz-vah project is focused on raising funds to restore the Danish fishing boat at the Houston Holocaust Museum. After arriving in Las Vegas a year ago she has volun-teered helping Holocaust survivors at the JFSA- Jewish Family Service Agency. Rebecca is looking forward to celebrating this milestone with friends and family from Denmark, Israel, Houston, Florida and Memphis.

Shofar Choir
I wanted to share with our parents and congregation some of my remarks during our Graduation Ceremonies at Shenker Academy, which reflect on my perception of modern education. As an educator, I try to frame every milestone of our chil-dren with a lesson, and especially a gradu-ation ceremony, a culmination of years of learning. One of the books that affected me the most as an educator was (and still is) “A WHOLE NEW MIND” by Daniel Pink. The message of the book is quite simple: Our Brains are divided into two hemispheres. The left hemi-sphere is sequential, logical, and analytical, and the right hemi-sphere is nonlinear, intuitive and holistic. We use both of these hemispheres for almost every task, but Daniel Pink uses these two parts of our brains to portray great educational metaphors. Pink claims that in past decades, the left brain capabilities were what people needed to move forward. MBAs, accountants, and engineers were the leaders of the 20th century. They are still needed today, but the right brain qualities of inno-vation, empathy, joy, meaning, and collaboration, are what indi-viduals and organizations need in the 21st century in order to break through and distinguish themselves from the rest. Just look at Apple, Facebook, Twitter, Google and other companies that embrace the traits of the modern era. And that is in essence what our educational vision at Shenker Academy is. We want to see these young children dream, create, dare and mostly, love to learn, at Shenker, and mainly after they graduate. In my visits to their classrooms, I have seen a professional team of educators work on sciences, arts, play time, languages, and yes, math, reading, writing, and achievement tests as well. Edu-cators who take the time and elevate their lessons to be what Daniel Pink sees as modern skills that are needed. We wish our graduates great success in whatever endeavors they choose, and thank our dedicated staff for creating such a won-derful educational environment. To Civilize Mankind “I will insist that the Hebrews have done more to civilize man than any other nation.” – John Adams As the Fourth of July approaches, we remember the founding of our nation, and in particular the signing of the Declaration of Independence. All of us k n o w b y h e a r t t h e s t i r r i n g announcement near the beginning of that Declaration: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal…” Most of us also recall the closing line, wherein the signers attested, “with a firm reliance on the protection of Divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our lives, our fortunes and our sacred honor.” Powerful words, even 239 years later. If we are being totally honest with ourselves, we have to admit that the signers of the Declaration, and indeed the Founding Fathers of our country as a group, were of – shall we say – “mixed” opinions about the Jewish people. However, we do know that a good number of Jews were in the American colonies by 1776, and at least one of those Declaration signers, John Adams, had a high opinion of the Jewish people, as reflected in the quotation with which I opened this column. Adams was also arguably an early Zionist, writing in 1819 to his friend and famed American Zionist, Mordecai Manuel Noah, “I… wish that you had been at the head of a hundred thousand Israelites… and marching with them into Judea… and restoring your nation to the dominion of it. For I really wish the Jews again in Judea an independent nation.” While Adams went on in that same letter to make the rather silly suggestion that the Jewish people, once restored to the land of Israel, might “possibly in time become liberal Unitarian Christians”, it is clear that Adams held the Jewish people in high esteem, and that he valued our contributions to the “civilizing” of mankind. As a URJ congregation, Temple Sinai supports the classic (dare I say, American?) ideals of equality and social justice, and our Men’s Club works tirelessly in support of the Temple’s mission. At our Annual Meeting last month, we enjoyed each other’s company, while arriving at a shared vision of what the next year has in store for our brotherhood. If you haven’t done so already, please join us. We have another great year in store, and we want you to be a part of it. The programs are: Shofar advertising - starting at $15 is a really good deal for businesses in the area. They get to 350 families in print or online. Temple Sinai Gala to
Honor Michael Leven
The special guest of honor at this year’s Annual Gala is Michael Leven. Michael “Mike” Leven moved to Las Vegas in 2007. He
was hired by Sheldon Adelson to become the Chief
Operating Officer of the Las Vegas Sands Corporation, a
position he held until his retirement last December. Since
retiring, Mike has assumed the role of International
Chairman of the Planning Committee for Birthright Israel,
and he volunteers as the Chairman and CEO of the Georgia
Aquarium.
Mike, along with his wife Andrea, has a strong priority for
Jewish philanthropy. In addition to his support of Temple
Sinai, Mike has had a very profound effect on a variety of
local Jewish organizations – not only as a donor, but also as
an advisor and mentor to the up and coming lay leadership
in the Las Vegas Valley. The valuable advice he has shared
will benefit our local community and its leadership for many
years to come.
Mike’s spare time is now taken up by his family and his
profound love of sports. We are most grateful that he has
given up some of that precious time and allowed us to
honor him at this year’s Gala.

Temple Sinai Retreat
Instead of being on Mt. Sinai (our namesake), Temple Sinai went to a different mountain…Mt. Charleston for its annual retreat. It is a lot closer and we weren’t looking for supreme intervention. We were looking for a religious, spiritual and learning experience. Okay… we did a little eating too. The adults had a full schedule of events starting upon arrival and our children had their own program of arts and crafts, visit to the ranger station and a scavenger hunt among other things. We kept them busy throughout the 3 days. Friday night Retreat V started out with dinner, a Shabbat Service including Jewish Identity presentations by 3 of our members and Temple Sinai Instant Friendship. Ask an attendee what this was. It was fun and informative…getting to know many fellow members in a very short time. Shabbat activities gave us some choices. We could hike with the Rabbi or listen to Dr. Sharon speak on the PEW report and what it means for the future of Reform Judaism. And this was before breakfast. We then did the Shabbat morning service and Torah study. Afterwards Rabbi led a 2-part discussion on the Reform Rabbis’ response to the Dawkins’ book The God Delusion. We did manage to squeeze a lunch in between the 2 parts. The breakout sessions followed. Everyone had the opportunity to take part in 2 out of 3 sessions…chair Yoga, Inspiring People through Communications or a description of our new High Holy Days Machzorim. Everyone then got the rest of the afternoon off. Oh yes!! We did eat again, only this time we called it Saturday dinner. Following this were some fun, games and dancing led by Rabbi, Laura Sussman and Minao Kamegai. And as the sun set on our glorious Shabbat, we did Havdalah on the back deck, a spiritual closing of the day with a beautiful backdrop of the mountain. Sunday morning found everyone eating again. The Rabbi and Rebbitzen gave us a tour of their old stomping grounds in London. A very unique opportunity to see Jewish London through the eyes of 2 of our leaders. The closing ceremony also was unique as we formed a circle outside, presented awards to the children and sent everyone off with great memories. If you ask some of our participants what was the best part, it was sitting around the lobby during break times and visiting with each other. The camaraderie was undeniably terrific. Our Temple religious leadership did a great job. We thank Rabbi Cohen, Sarah Stewart and Sharon Knafo, our Director of Education, for the time they spent preparing and delivering their portions. A special thank you goes to the committee for putting this all together. They were Jackie and Shel Kolner, co-chairs; Eileen Bellsey Levin, Suzanne Feigenson, Les Gilbert, Aimee Knox, Bob Levin, Ryan Reisman, Eileen Sherman, Nancy Sherman and Laura Sussman. We thank Josh Knox, who helped coordinate the children’s activities. We have set Retreat VI to be June 3-5, 2016. See you all there!

Temple Sinai Personal Tribute Cards
Have you seen the personal tribute cards? If not, they are available in our Sisterhood gift shop. Please stop and take a look. These cards match our standard tribute cards but are used to send personal notes. They allow you to convey your personal sentiments to family and friends while still indicating to them that a donation was made in their honor to the Temple Sinai general fund. The cards are available in 7-packs for $36.00. They are also available by calling Dorothy Cohen (702.228.7040) or Phyllis Feigenson (973.525.7799). Talk to the ladies or stop in at the gift shop. Temple Sinai Time Capsule
As a result of the efforts of several members, including Archie Weitman, Dr. Lawrence Copeland, Frances Copeland, Steve Haberkorn, Mark Ohriner, Myron Bernstein, Meera Kamegai and Seymour Kaplan, Temple Sinai is putting together a Time Capsule. It will be placed into a wall in our small Shul. The location will be marked by a plaque on the wall. If you have any information, including pictures, and any personal history that relates to the history of Temple Sinai, we would love to have you submit that information for placement in the Time Capsule. All of the information provided for the Time Capsule will be private. It should be placed into sealed envelopes, marked “Time Capsule”, and brought to the Temple. Thank you in advance for your participation.
Safe Nest Drop Off Box
Temple Sinai continues its support for Safe Nest by housing a drop off box on site. Safe Nest is Nevada’s largest and most comprehensive charity devoted solely to domestic violence issues. Safe Nest’s programs are concentrated in four areas of service: shelter, counseling, advocacy and prevention. Safe Nest accepts clothing, toys and baby supplies. For a comprehensive list please visit their website www.safenest.org . The drop off box is located on east side of the property near the center of the parking lot. For donation receipts please see Lisa in the office.
Pavers are customized bricks used to honor your friends and family whose names will be placed in the decorative walkway in our courtyard next to the Hebrew School classrooms. Note, they are not intended as memorials since people will be walking on them. Pavers are 7 1/8” by 3 1/4 inch and may contain up to 3 lines of engraving, with 16 characters per line including spaces. A donation of $118 for each custom paver is required. Instead, he blesses them; “How goodly are your tents o’ Jacob.” Pinchas stops a plague when he kills both an Israeli man and his Midi-anite consort. July 10-11 Pinchas Pinchas is rewarded for his ac-tions. A second census is taken. The daughters of Zelo-phchad speak up in defense of their rights. Joshua is chosen to succeed Moses. July 17-18 Matot-Masei We fight a war with the Midianites. Reuben and Gad are permitted to remain east of the Jordan River. G-d makes the distinction be-tween murder and manslaughter. The laws of inher-itance as they apply to Israelite women are delineated. July 24-25 Devarim The final book of the Torah. Moses recounts our journey from Egypt and confirms the Land of Israel belongs to the Jewish people.

Public Education Funding The legislature at Carson City is at a critical juncture with regard to Public Education funding.
