April: We have one project and one event scheduled:
Project: The committee will once again be collecting toiletries and snacks for
the growing number of troops deployed to Africa who have limited access to base
facilities. Items needed include body wash, bar soap, deodorant, toothbrushes,
toothpaste, shampoo, hand sanitizer, hand wipes, crackers, jerky, nutrition bars, etc. No
chocolate or items that can melt. Please remember all items need to fit in small postal
service boxes. Look for additional details in the Friday flyers and weekly E-blasts.
Event: On Tuesday, April 21st at 5:30 pm we will be visiting and volunteering
at Three Square food bank. Please contact Robert Levin at [email protected] if
you are interested in joining us.
Dr. Sharon Knafo is a wonderful
addition to Temple Sinai and the
Shenker Academy this year. I have
gotten to know him and his family and
they are a delight. He has brought
stability and organization to our youth
education along with great analytical
insight. He has made one grave
mistake: that of challenging me to a
Sumo Wrestling bout at the Purim
Carnival. This will be happening on
March 1 and it will not be fun for
Dr. Knafo.
What he fails to realize is that the
ancient art of Sumo was actually
the invention of the Talmudic
rabbis of Babylon. While the
R o m a n o c c u p i e r s w e r e
surrounding the Jerusalem Temple
in the year 68 C.E. there was an
elite fighting squad of Jewish sumo
wrestlers who would work in the
shadows of the old city walls to
terrify the occupiers. Rabbi Yose
ben Nakamoto and Shmuel ben
Yoshida began a covert training
camp in the women’s courtyard of
the Temple. They worked on the
sumo moves that we all know and
love like the belly bazinga and the
abdomen Armageddon. Roman
soldiers would run, screaming in
torment as these rotund rabbis
would approach.
Not only did the Rabbis invent this
fighting skill but they combined it
with the esoteric field of kabbalah to
make a truly fearsome fusion. Sumo
Rabbis would combine and
recombine letters of the secret
names of G-d to enhance the power
of their moves much like the
modern day Power Rangers. Dr.
Knafo should know that, since I am
in a direct line from those ancient
Rabbis, they have passed on these
secret moves from person to person
to make the lean, mean, fighting
machine that you see before you on
Temple Sinai’s bimah. You’re going
down!

President’s Message
The love of family and the admiration of friends is much more important than wealth and privilege. Charles Kuralt As a Jew and an American, my parents instilled in me that if you are nice
to people, good karma will always come back around tenfold. Of equal
importance is always to be positive and give everyone the benefit of the
doubt. These are the values which we have passed down to our children
growing up as they head off to college, along with an education in “street
smarts” such as being aware of your surroundings and being cautious about who to trust.
Becoming immersed within college life and taking full advantage of the opportunities like Hillel
are the suggestions all of us as parents make to ease the homesickness that our children
inevitably face, and then out of nowhere Anti-Semitism rears its ugly head among a college
campus, leaving me momentarily speechless. Last month at the University of California Davis,
swastikas were spray painted on the walls of a Jewish fraternity. This last incident hit me
particularly hard, probably due to the fact that I have one child in college and another on the
way to college in September. However, there are some other issues in regards to this situation
that have me very concerned.
From my research, this last incident was in response to Jewish students walking out of a student
senate meeting after they passed a resolution asking the regents at UC Davis to cut ties with any
businesses with Israeli connections. Although I believe strongly in our right to our opinions and
free speech, I simply cannot support any resolution in which Israel is sanctioned by any
government, even at the student level. I feel strongly about this, not necessarily because I am
Jewish but because I am an American. Israel is the only country within the Middle East that
holds the same core values and beliefs that we do as Americans, and yet through propaganda,
Israel becomes the tyrant. I will be very interested in the college’s response to the resolution and
the actions that have been taken as a result of the Student Senate’s actions.
What surprised me even more was the lack of media coverage that this incident commanded. It
was very difficult to find any news reports or videos within our mainstream media. Have we
become desensitized to the seriousness of something like this because it appears to be more
commonplace? These are the questions I have pondered over the last few days that have me
very concerned.
The only answer that is clear to me is my responsibility as an American Jew to bring about
awareness of the anti-Semitism to anyone I know, coupled with educating everyone on the
importance of Israel in the middle east to us as Americans and not just as Jews.
As a parent, I try and educate my children on the importance of not only fighting for our rights,
but volunteering for organizations that help what touches our hearts and our heritage. Be
passionate about the causes and organizations that provide an avenue for us as Jewish
Americans to be heard.

Religious School News
The weeks prior to Purim at Temple Sinai are always a great opportunity to celebrate our tradition and learn about it. As our students get to hear the Megilah (Book of Esther) reading on 3/4/2015 and participate in the Purim Spiel, we emphasize the magic of Purim with “…There was a reversal and the Jews overcame their enemies (Esther 9:1)” The idea of Ve’nahafochu, a reversal of the expected and the happening in the Purim story, is central to the victory of the Jews over their enemies in Jewish tradition. Beyond just telling this story to our children, the school’s role is to teach the comparison of what happened then and our current events on a personal level. The School’s role is to educate our students that a strong will, perseverance and faith in G-d can make miracles in their lives.
Purim Celebration Temple Sinai’s Purim Carnival will be on Sunday, March 1st, 2015, 10.00am-2.00pm. We will not have regular Religious School that day, however, students of all ages are invited to a day of fun, arts & crafts, great food, games, prizes, and many more surprises. Our Madrichim will run the various booths at the Carnival (from 10am-2pm) and will be provided with a lunch and a break. If you would like to volunteer and help during that time, please contact Ilana Shapiro at [email protected] . Starting on Sunday 2/22/2015, Ilana Shapiro (Purim Carnival chairperson) will have special pre-sale tickets for the religious school families. Unlimited access passes will be sold for $18.00. Children under 2 are free, as are parents. On Wednesday, March 4th, 2015 we will have our Hebrew School (4.30pm-6.00pm), followed by a Purim Spiel and a fun Purim Celebration led by Rabbi Cohen and Cantor Gindlin (Please remember that Hebrew School on Wednesday the 4th is in lieu of Tuesday March 3rd). Religious School Parent Connections We are forming a new group called Parent Connections, for religious school parents who wish to build a more vibrant and cohesive religious school community. We will meet every first Sunday of the month from 9:45-11.00am (our first meeting will be on 3/8/2015 a week after the Purim Carnival). David Abrams, a parent of two students at the Religious School, and Wendy Steinberg, a parent of 6th grade twins, will lead the group. If you are interested in participating, please contact David at (702) 438-1187. Holocaust Studies in the 7th grade Our 7th graders will continue with Holocaust studies in class, watching the movie Paperclips. We will follow up after the film with a discussion and a better understanding of the content of the Holocaust. In addition to the curriculum taught in the classroom, the 7th graders will participate in the Yom Hashoah committee poem writing. The students will write poems dealing with the Holocaust in under 100 words. There are 4 themes: 1. “Man’s Inhumanity to Man” 2. Hope 3. Resistance 4. “Never Again”. The winners will be
recognized during the Yom Hashoah Service at Congregation Ner Tamid at 4:30 p.m. on April 12th. The deadline for submissions will be April 2nd.
In between the holiday of Purim and the Holocaust Memorial Day we have a minor holiday called Passover. We are planning a Religious School Model Seder that will encompass songs, texts, and much of the joy of Passover. From Your Sisterhood From Your Men’s Club It’s March Madness!!! Spring is in the air, the Purim Carnival is this week. Please partake. It is a blast. I am also excited to announce the 3rd Annual WOMEN’S SEDER Wednesday March 25 at 6pm. RSVP today! I always enjoy spring because it signifies to me growth, possibilities, and new beginnings. No matter what stage of life you are experiencing, who can resists new beginnings? I find myself reminiscing about when my boys were bundles (now men) and when I was young and eager to
make my mark on the world; truly not understanding the obstacles in my path and with that naivety not giving merit to negativity and thus meeting my milestones. In retrospect I can appreciate the power of positive thinking. Visualize, strategizes and recognize! Seems simple as I type, however, I am no fool. Proper skill set, resources, long hours and perseverance are also needed, but when you are young details blend and blur, energy soars and milestones are met. Take a moment to reminisce about one of your accomplishments. I bet you remember luck or fate and not the hard work that got you to that point of success. Ah the magic of youth. I am wishing you all the magic of youth, the ability to not see negativity and obstacles, and the energy to blur hard work into success! It is spring. Why not? Sisterhood programs for all Temple members and guests: Zumba classes every Thursday from 7pm-8pm ($5/class or 5 classes for $20) – Come work out with friends and don’t worry if you are new. The classes will be age and skill-level appropriate. Classes are ongoing so you’re never behind.
The Sisterhood’s Gift Shop is OPEN – The hours of operation are: Fridays 6pm-7:30pm, Sundays 9am-1pm and Tuesday 3pm-4:30pm and always by appointment. Look for Jan Shumow. Change Is the Law of Life
“Change is the law of life. And those who look
only to the past or present are certain to miss
the future.” – President John F. Kennedy
It is the month of March, and a change of
season is afoot. Even here in the Mojave, we see
the changes associated with spring: wildflowers
in bloom, the temperatures creeping warmer, and a noticeable
uptick in the tourist traffic – especially of a certain, collegiate age.
Of course, change continues at Temple Sinai as well. We continue
to see new members, additional improvements to our physical
campus, new social and educational events, and yes, even some
new challenges.
Change can be vexing at times, and we have all experienced
changes at some point in our lives that, at least at the time, we
weren’t exactly thrilled about. But our entire Jewish tradition is a
story of changes. From the expulsion from the Garden, to the
Flood, to Abraham’s departure from his homeland, to the Exodus
from Egypt, the Torah is in many ways one story after another
about changes – of circumstance, scenery, covenant, law, and
understanding.
Our Hebrew prophets often spoke of change, too, and usually as
an objective to strive toward. In the Talmud, we read that, in times
of change, even changes we don’t particularly like, we as Jews
should re-orient our thinking to the realization that, gam zu l’tova –
“this, too, is for the good.” The nineteenth-century Hasidic Rabbi,
Shmuel Sheftel, told a story about a young Jewish boy who had a
particularly difficult time with a summer fast day, because he had to
wait so long for the sun to set before he could eat. The next day,
the boy didn’t even want to get out of bed and face the day,
remarking to his father that he couldn’t bear another long day
without eating. His father replied simply, “Have no fear; today is
not yesterday.”
Today certainly isn’t yesterday, and it isn’t tomorrow, either. In the
quotation with which I opened this column, President John F.
Kennedy (unintentionally, I’m sure) echoed a sentiment straight out
of our Jewish tradition: “Change is the law of life.” Speaking to an
audience in Frankfurt, Germany, in 1963, President Kennedy went
on to caution that, “those who look only to the past or present are
certain to miss the future.” As Jews, we do well to remember that
change is indeed the law of life, and has been since the dawn of
Creation. We cannot dwell on the past, nor even remain
complacently in the present. Confronted with change, we should
trust that, “this, too, is for the good”, and we must remain hopeful,
lest we miss the future we are helping to fashion.

Advertising and Sponsorship
An easy and important way you can help support your Temple is by utilizing our advertising and sponsorship programs. We need your help in finding advertisers. The programs are: Shofar advertising - starting at $15 is a really good deal for businesses in the area. They get to 350 families in print or online. All we need to contact them are a person’s name and their e-mail address. We take care of the rest. Please volunteer some names and addresses. See below. E-blast Sponsorship - The weekly e-blast can contain add-on advertising. The advertiser gets 5 weekly e-blasts for $18, a very easy but effective way to get to the 600 members on our e-mail list. All we need is the person’s name and their e-mail address. We take care of the rest. Shabbat Flyer Sponsorship - Personal messages may be displayed in the flyer. e.g. Sponsor in honor of your anniversary or birthday. An easy way to support your Temple and it is only $18. This may be coordinated with Oneg Shabbat sponsorships. FAQ's
Can I designate the donation to go to specific funds?
Yes, funds available include The General Fund, Rabbi’s
Discretionary Fund, Cantor’s Discretionary Fund, the
Endowment Fund, the Gertrude Scholarship Fund, the
Religious School Fund and The Richard Greenberg Memorial
Fund.
What are the Pavers?
These are the bricks in the courtyard. When all the details are
completed, members will be able to dedicate pavers with
names on them.
Where can I see what the Note Card Bundle looks like?
In the Sisterhood Gift shop. These cards allow you to write
personal notes to family and friends. The card indicates a
donation was made to the Temple Sinai General Fund.
Is there an installment plan for larger donations?
Memorial Plaques may be paid over a 4 month period.

Temple Sinai Personal Tribute Cards
Have you seen the personal tribute cards? If not, they are available in our Sisterhood gift shop. Stop and take a look. These cards match our standard tribute cards but are used to send personal notes. They allow you to convey your personal sentiments to family and friends while still indicating to them that a donation was made in their honor to the Temple Sinai general fund. The cards are available in 7-packs for $36.00. They are also available by calling Dorothy Cohen (702.228.7040) or Phyllis Feigenson (973.525.7799). Talk to the ladies or stop in at the gift shop. You will be happy you did.
Temple Sinai Time Capsule
As a result of the efforts of several members, including Archie Weitman, Dr. Lawrence Copeland, Frances Copeland, Steve Haberkorn, Mark Ohriner, Myron Bernstein, Meera Kamegai and Seymour Kaplan, Temple Sinai is putting together a Time Capsule. It will be placed into a wall in our small Shul. The location will be marked by a plaque on the wall. If you have any information, including pictures, and any personal history that relates to the history of Temple Sinai, we would love to have you submit that information for placement in the Time Capsule. All of the information provided for the Time Capsule will be private. It should be placed into sealed envelopes, marked “Time Capsule”, and brought to the Temple. Thank you in advance for your participation.
Safe Nest Drop Off Box
Temple Sinai continues its support for Safe Nest by housing a drop off box on site. Safe Nest is Nevada’s largest and most comprehensive charity devoted solely to domestic violence issues. Safe Nest’s programs are concentrated in four areas of service: shelter, counseling, advocacy and prevention. Safe Nest accepts clothing, toys and baby supplies. For a comprehensive list please visit their website www.safenest.org . The drop off box is located on west side of the property next to the structure which holds our garbage bin.
