Home Hemodialysis

Most patients undergoing hemodialy-sis must visit their local dialysis centerfor a four-hour session three times aweek. Teijin’s home hemodialysis sys-tem, currently under development,will enable patients to undergo sixtwo-hour treatments a week in thehome. In addition to eliminating thephysical burden of traveling to andfrom the dialysis center, the new sys-tem will minimize dialysis disequilib-rium syndrome (which occurs withlong, intensive treatments), relieveanemia and facilitate more effectivemanagement of blood pressure.

New Chemical RecyclingTechnology

Teijin has developed a new technolo-gy that facilitates the recovery ofhigh-purity dimethyl terephthalate(DMT) from almost all polyesterproducts, including additives and pro-cessing chemicals. Since 1962, Teijinhas been recovering the raw materialsfrom in-house polyester fibers waste,using a recycling technology thatchemically decomposes polyesterfibers. This epoch-making innovationfor removing additives and processingchemicals has also led to the develop-ment of new chemical recycling technologies. This technology wascommercialized in April 2002 atTeijin Fibers’ Tokuyama Factory. Also at the Tokuyama Factory, theCompany will establish facilities forconverting DMT from polyethyleneterephthalate (PET) bottles into high-purity terephthalic acid (TPA), and for

Environmental Preservation

Promoting coexistencewith the environment:fulfilling responsibilitiesto the future

Teijin’s operations affect the environ-ment negatively in two ways, namely,the use of raw materials and energyand the generation of chemical sub-stances and industrial waste duringproduction processes. The disposal of

synthetic fibers, films, resin and otherproducts after use also harms the envi-ronment. In line with the TeijinGlobal Environmental Charter, thecompanies of the Teijin Group areworking to eliminate industrial waste,harmful substance emissions, the inef-ficient use of energy and accidentsfrom its operations. To this end, Teijinhas established stringent medium-termobjectives, which include specificnumerical targets. At every stage inthe life cycle of a product, including

development, manufac-turing, distribution, use,consumption and disposal,Teijin adheres to strictinternal standards forenvironmental soundnessand safety and works toimprove product perfor-mance on both counts. At the same time, Teijin is exploiting its techno-logical resources to develop new businesses in recycling, energy con-servation and other areasrelated to environmentalprotection.

Two key conceptsdescribe the principlesunderlying Teijin’sapproach to environmen-tal preservation: responsi-bility, or its duty as amanufacturer to reduce

●ENVIRONMENTAL PRINCIPLES OF THE TEIJIN

GROUP

In line with its philosophy of coexisting with the envi-ronment and placing a high priority on the preservationof the natural environment, Teijin is

1. conducting its business activities with a priority onenvironmental conservation and safety, and the provision of environmentally sound products and services;

2. reducing environmental load through the efficient useof resources and energy and product recycling;

3. cooperating at the regional and global levels to facili-tate the use of its expertise and technologies to con-tribute to environmental preservation and sustainabledevelopment.

●MEDIUM-TERM GROUP

ENVIRONMENTAL OBJECTIVES

1. Reduce emissions of hazardous substances by half

2. Improve energy efficiency by 1% per year

3. Reduce emissions of industrial waste by half (The above objectives are based on 1998 levels andare to be achieved by 2005.)

4. Actively promote chemical and materials recycling by(1) establishing a system for recycling chemicals and

materials;(2) developing easy-to-recycle products

the environmental load of its produc-tion and sales activities, and contribu-tion, or its efforts to develop andmarket innovative, environment-friendly technologies and products.

54

For two consecutive years, Teijin hasbeen ranked as a leader in the DowJones Sustainability Indexes, aninternational index that evaluatescompanies’ efforts in such areas asenvironmental protection, safety,ethics and community involvement.

●TEIJIN GROUP RECYCLING ACTIVITIES EARN MINISTER OF ECONOMY, TRADE

AND INDUSTRY AWARD

In October 2001, the Teijin Group’s recycling activities were honored with an awardfrom the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry at the Recycling PromotionAchievement Awards, sponsored by Japan’s Recycling Promotion Association. Theaward, which is given to individuals, groups or companies, is in recognition of forward-looking activities and achievements judged to contribute to greater social understandingand awareness of recycling. The Teijin Group was acknowledged for its efforts in market-ing ECOPET—a polyester fiber made from recycled PET bottles that was launched in1995 and is currently the top-selling product of its kind in the Japanese market—and itsECOCIRCLE system, a service initiated by Teijin in 1999 for collecting used polyesterfabrics and recycling them into products for a variety of applications.

●BOTTLE-TO-BOTTLE RECYCLING SYSTEM DEVELOPED

“Bottle-to-bottle” technology enables the recycling of used PET bottles into PET resinthat can then be made into new PET bottles. Teijin’s proprietary system enables the the production of PET resin of comparable purity to petroleum-based PET resin. This releases PET bottle manufacturers fromtheir dependence on petroleum, thereby creating a fully closedrecycling system. This technology will be commercialized inOctober 2003 at Teijin Fibers’ Tokuyama Factory.

●ECOPET EC100 COMMERCIALIZED

Teijin recently started marketing ECOPET EC100,a fiber made using the Company’s industry-leadingPET resin recycling technology. The new product is:1. made entirely from recycled PET2. comparable in quality to conventional PET fibers3. less harmful in terms of environmental burden, requiring 30%

less energy to manufacture and contributing to the prevention of globalwarming by emitting 20% less carbon dioxide than conventional products

4. 100% recycled and thus compatible with the Green PurchasingLaw* and Japan’s Ecomark.

TEIJIN LAUNCHES INNOVATIVE AUTOSET® T

AUTOMATICALLY ADJUSTING CPAP VENTILATOR

Teijin has launched a new automatically adjustingcontinuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) ventila-tor for sufferers of sleep apnea syndrome (SAS), a breathing disorder during sleep. SAS can causehypersomnolence—the inability to stay awake dur-ing the day—as well as lead to a host of lifestyle-related diseases. SAS patients falling asleep at thewheel may cause accidents, while falling asleep atwork may result in injury. One of the most success-ful ways of treating SAS is CPAP, in which a ven-tilator is used to apply positive pressure to the airwayduring sleep to prevent airway blockage and inter-rupted breathing. Teijin’s innovative AutoSet® TCPAP ventilator uses a sensor to detect inspiratoryflow limitation and increases pressure applied via themask in response. Thedevice is thus expected to contribute greatly toimproving the quality of life of SAS patients.
