Home Hemodialysis

Most patients undergoinghemodialysis must visit theirlocal dialysis center for a four-hour session three times aweek. Teijin’s home hemodi-alysis system, currently underdevelopment, will enablepatients to undergo six two-hour treatments a week in thehome. In addition to eliminating the physical burden oftraveling to and from the dialysis center, the new systemwill minimize dialysis disequilibrium syndrome (whichoccurs with long, intensive treatments), relieve anemia andfacilitate more effective management of blood pressure.

Bonalon®

Osteoporosis, which results in the loss of bone density, isestimated to affect approximately 10 million people inJapan. With the rapid aging of the country’s population, osteoporosis is predicted to become an increasinglycritical health problem. Bonalon® (alendronate)— an inno-vative new bisphosphonate compound developed in Japanby Teijin, Merck & Co., Inc., of the United States, andJapan’s Banyu Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd.— acts to preventdeterioration and porosity of bone tissue, and has beenshown to increase bone density and reduce fracture risk. With Bonalon® , researchers also succeeded ineliminating the problem of deossification,a major side effect of otherbisphosphonates, makingBonalon® useful for long-term, continuous treatment.

New Technology for Recycling Raw Materials Used inPolyester Products

Teijin’s new technology facilitates the recovery of high-purity dimethyl terephthalate (DMT) from almost allpolyester products, including additives and processingchemicals. The technology even enables users to recover, for example, DMT from polyester products that is as pureas that manufactured from oil, thus making it possible torecycle and reuse almost all polyester products.

Teijin has conducted research since 1962 to develop arecycling technology that chemically decomposes polyesterfibers and returns them to the raw material state. Thistechnology served as the foundation for the developmentof this revolutionary method for recovering DMT frompolyester products. By initiating a chemical reaction, userscan obtain terephthalic acid (TPA) from DMT thusrecovered, which can then be recycled into polyethyleneterephthalate (PET) bottles.

Phase-Different Films for LCDs

With ordinary films for LCDs, variations in wavelengthresult in an extreme angle of torsion. To ease this problemand enhance effectiveness, most LCDs use two layers offilm glued together. Even with two layers, however, lightthat bends beyond the original angle of torsion leaks fromthe deflection plate, resulting in a slight divergence incolor from black to gray.

In developing its new phase-difference films forLCDs, Teijin’s researchers reexamined the polymer struc-ture of the film from the engineering stage and succeededin developing a film that generates an angle of torsionthat adjusts to wavelength, thus matching the direction ofthe light. A single layer of this new film thus offers greatersharpness of color than conventional two-layered films.

Solupor/Solufill

Solupor and Solufill are super high-molecular-weight porouspolyethylene two-way drawn films produced using a geltechnology. Both films were developed by DSM N.V. ofthe Netherlands, while DSM Teijin Solutech Limited inJapan was responsible for production technology andcommercial product development. Solupor, an innovative, ultrathin, multilayered engineering film similar in struc-ture to a nonwoven fabric, carries perforations of variousdiameters, ensuring extremely high chemical stability.Solupor is thus suitable for a wide range of uses, from pre-cision filters to battery separators. Solufill, which features aceramic content of more than 90% by weight, is a porouspolyethylene film with an independent filler and a struc-ture that resembles a Solupor frame around a filler. Thanksto its adjustable polyethylene content, Solufill can be usedto transform a broad range of ceramics into ceramic film, while the ultrahigh strength of the super high-molecular-

weight polyethylene used facili-tates outstanding thinness.Because of its suitability to han-dling and secondary processing,Solufill is acquiring attention asa new material for multilayeredceramic capacitors.
