● Hey Sophomores!!!! Your life at TCC Southeast will be here before you know it. TCC course registration for Fall 2019 classes will take place soon. But there are a few things you must take care of prior to registering for classes next school year.

❏ Will you have enough high school credits to be promoted to a junior? ❏ Have you passed your TSI Reading? ❏ Have you passed your TSI Writing? ❏ Have you passed your TSI Math? ❏ Do you have an updated Meningitis shot?

You also will need to have the Meningitis shot in order to take classes at TCC Southeast. Make plans to get your meningitis shot updated or on file with us so that you can complete your TCC registration. You can not take classes on any college campus without the Meningitis immunization. What should you do?

Dual Credit Class Etiquette Please be respectful to all of your instructors, high school and college instructors alike. There have been a few reports of immaturity in certain college classes. Please be mindful that dual credit instructors expect you to govern your own behavior. They do not need to remind you to stop talking, pay attention, take notes or put your phone away. They commonly teach adult learners and do not want to remind their students of common sense. They may out of courtesy, give you one reminder. However, at anytime you maybe removed from class. Respect your instructors and their class expectations. ECHS is designed to focus on your academics and collegiate pursuits...we are not designed to handle serious or persistent misconduct. If you find yourself, not able to handle the maturity of the school, you may want to reconsider if this is the most appropriate place for you. We are not a traditional high school, we are a collegiate academy. You must act accordingly. Stallions Strive for Success!

They are not MISD employees. Again, you must check in with our HS MISD 7th block instructors first. This is how your attendance is taken.

● How are you doing in your HS and TCC classes? This is the Progress Report Grade Season!

Get in the habit of checking your Skyward grade for HS classes and Blackboard for your TCC. IF you don’t know how to access Skyward or Blackboard, then connect with a friend who does so that they can show you. You will need to learn how to be resourceful, meaning, if you see a concern in your grades, then you will need to make effort to seek help. That is the college way. Don’t wait for a teacher or counselor to tell you that you are not doing well in class. It is your responsibility. Be resourceful! Get help! This week, if you are in need of tutorials, your AVID grade check form will be used to document your need for tutorials. If you do not attend tutorials, when needed, you will attend detention on Thursdays during club time. Failure to not attend detention on Thursdays will result in after school detention and ISS. See Academic Tutorial Schedule , which is also posted on ECHS website.

● Did you absence fail last semester? If you absenced failed last semester, your recovery hours are due to Counselor Buckner pretty soon. Do not miss the deadline to fulfill your hours. Failure to not complete hours means that you have not met high school graduation credit requirements.

● This is Student Council Election Week!!!!

● Thursday we will jumpstart ECHS club time during advisory. What club do you want to continue from last year?

What club do you want to have at ECHS?

Each club needs a student chairperson and teacher sponsor. The work of the chairperson is to organize the needs and activities of the club as well as start creating the bylaws. If you are not willing to work and lead a club, don’t ask a teacher or staff member to sponsor it! Anything without a vision will not last.

● Teachers Conduct ID and Dress Code check. Send students to office if they do not abide by ID and Dress Code guide. (Dress Code Guide)

Wednesday, 29th

● Club Thursday begins, tomorrow Thursday, August 30th. Here is what should happen before we begin:

Understand the Why. Why is joining a club and organization important?

● Worcester, a selective university with a strong focus on science and engineering no longer requires SAT or ACT scores for admission. Palumbo said, “applicants must demonstrate that once on campus they can apply skills that “standardized tests don’t measure very well, if at all”— the ability to work in teams, communicate, and solve problems on the fly, for example”

Quoted from The Two Most Important College Admissions Criteria Now Mean Less , Online Article from The Atlantic

● Many colleges and companies are noticing a large amount of

students who are book smart, but lack communication, character and integrity. No one wants to hire a“know it all” professional who doesn’t know how to be approachable or feel as if they can not open their mind to learn new ideas.

● Technical skill is easy to train. Personality and being well rounded has to be developed. Top STEM and professional companies want a well-rounded person - not a robot who can spout information.

● Students must learn how to solve problems on the fly- not complain about issues or wish someone would help them figure

Page 19: TCC SE Mansfield Early College HS Advisory Lessons (18-19) Mon … · 2019-01-17 · TCC SE Mansfield Early College HS Advisory Lessons (18-19) Mon - Thurs The purpose of our advisory

it out. Students must take initiative and solve problems others complain about. This is what sets people apart from being leaders and professional trend setters.

● Clubs and organizations allow students to connect with others, respect diversity, learn how to communicate, learn how to process and handle conflict, lead and take initiatives over causes that impact students and others and have fun with like minded people.

Review Timberview & ECHS Club List - show clubs with sponsors listed. Yellow Highlight - represents ECHS clubs

Red Highlight - represents THS clubs that ECHS can join Blue Highlight - represents THS club that will create an ECHS chapter if students are interested and will stay after school Tuesday and Thursdays if Students show interest and commitment.

What ECHS or THS club do you want to join that already exists? What club do you not see listed, will take the initiative in creating, getting a sponsor and organizing the activities? If you are looking to create a club you must perform the following

● Get a list of 7-10 students to participate in the club ● Get a sponsor for that club ● Create a vision for the club and explain the purpose of the club ● What activities will the students of the club participate in? ● Be willing to create the constitution and by laws for this club. ● The president of this club must be a member of Student Council and

report club activities to our council as well as serve on the Principal’s Advisory Council of Student Leaders.

● If your club is not active or contributing to our collegiate academy - your club will be dissolved.

TCC clubs are listed in your blackboard account. They have hundreds of clubs from sports, academics, cultural, STEM, honor society , etc that you can get involved in if you are willing to take the initiative to participate.
