Mansfield Urban is a landscape architecture focused urban design practice located in Newcastle NSW.

Our inspiration comes from critically observing the way people react with their live environment - their enjoyment of space - the satisfaction and pleasure gained from being in spaces that are thoughtfully and responsively designed with people in mind.

Our 'clients' are always the end user through the design process, where the client that engages us to prepare the concepts and plans is the instrument for delivery and thoughtful space. We may not know our clients personally as individuals because they are the mums and dads, the kids and pets, the lovers and fighters who use our designs every day; but we can feel the appreciation from them when space is beautifully and responsively designed.

Mansfield Urban had its genesis as a landscape construction firm named Adams Landscaping back in 1985, completing major landscape construction projects for clients like Pacific Power. Helen Mansfield, Director of the company, soon realised that good design was the key to achieving a hard to define spatial quality that was evident in enjoyable and appreciated space.

Helen originally studied Social Welfare and then went on to study Horticulture, Landscape Design and Landscape Architecture, finishing recently with a Masters in Urban Design and Urban Planning at Sydney University in 2011. Along the way, Helen gained registration as a Landscape Architect with the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects, then had a professional partnership with Stacey Brodbeck as Mansfield Brodbeck, and is now the Regional Coordinator for the Institute and has a professional association as a Member of the Planning Institute of Australia and is also a Member of the Urban Design Group in the UK.

Today, as Mansfield Urban, our practice is supported by a dedicated team of Landscape Architects, Designers and Administrative staff and aims to expand opportunities to work collaboratively with other design professionals to create holistic and thoughtful space where environment, sustainability, culture, history and current stories are key tools for creating meaning for Places, Spaces and People.

Waterford County is one of the Hunter’s largest planned communities with over 2000 lots proposed for development supported by a town centre, local schools and shopping areas, open space and recreational parks, cycleways and public transport links all sited within a peaceful rural setting close to the historic town of Morpeth.

Mansfield Landscape Architecture (now Mansfield Urban) developed the landscape masterplans plus Landscape Principles and Objectives as a guideline document to assist the community, the developer, the local Council and other stakeholders to interpret and implement the philosophy and design intent of the open space, public domain, streetscapes and parks of the landscape and community areas within the Waterford County precinct.

Waterford County is a planned community project with the ability to support a wide range of housing typologies from terrace housing to larger homestead lots which provides opportunities to develop a complexity of form and function across the estate delivering a truly diverse and multi-layered living experience for residents.

Waterford has been developed as a ‘walkable’ estate with precincts connected by a planned network of linked reserves, pedestrian pathways and cycleways allowing easy interconnections from one neighbourhood to another and to key community focal points.

Mansfield Urban has been involved with this project from the earliest planning stages through to construction documentation for initial land releases.

Hidden Waters residential sub-division is one of the Hunter Valley’s premier residential developments located in Fletcher, Newcastle NSW. With over 50% of the site dedicated to bushland reserve areas, the sub-division has been designed to sit comfortably within its natural bushland setting.

Mansfield Urban has been involved with this development since its inception in 2003 and has delivered a full suite of Landscape Concept Plans, Landscape Management Plans, Construction plans and specifications, plus landscape project management for this prestige estate.

As a result, the local landscape character has been retained as an essential and unique ‘point of difference’ for this estate where wildlife is abundant, bell birds live in the vegetation along the creek lines and children play in a natural environment.

A major part of the landscape design approach for this estate has been the use of local plant species to establish the interface between new development and the retained bushland. This has provided a natural transitional edge between the bush and the developed lots and has reduced the need for expensive ongoing maintenance of introduced species.

Road design has encouraged direct run off into the bushland edges where sand filters treat water before it enters the Wentworth Creek System. A large stormwater detention system doubles as a much appreciated water feature within a park setting on the northern edge of the development.

The NSW State Government invested heavily in Newcastle in the late 1990’s, seeking to breathe life back into the city through investment in infrastructure and public ammenities after the closure of heavy industry giant BHP. The Honeysuckle Precinct was an initiative of the NSW State Government seeking to transform a redundant harbourside location into a vibrant residential and commerical disctrict.

The Wincrest Group developed a 9,000 square metre site along the harbour front adjacent to planned cycleways, open space yacht clubs and fishing markets close to the CBD and beaches of Newcastle. The overall aim of the Linwood Shores development was to crete 60 townhouses with lane way access and defined street presentation to reflect the existing fine grain housing typology of the Wickham suburb, establishing a consistent and organised streetscape.

Mansfield Landscape Architecture (now Mansfield Urban) developed landscape strategies, concept and construction documentation to support both the public and private domains with exceptional outcomes. Currently local resisdents hold an annual Living Harbour Garden competition as part of a true community spirit that has evolved from the application of sound urban design principles.

This was an opportunity to develop one of the largest single land deposits left on the Eastern side of Lake Macquarie. The site was previously a privately held caravan park with excellent access to local facilities

Dwellings were constructed mainly as two storey 2 bed configurations and were sold as affordable housing.

Site assets included a large stand of mature spotted gums which were retained and incorporated into the housing layout design. Other mature trees such as a signature Norfolk Island Pine at the entry and mature Canary Island Date Palm were retained as part of a deliberate design strategy to maintain existing site landscape character.

In the early 2000’s Newcastle was at the cusp of a redevelopment transformation from a heavy industrial city form into a more complex residential urban form. As part of this transition, old industrial sites along forgotten creeks and harbour tributaries were brought to new life with the introduction of medium density housing on large post industrial sites.

Mansfield Landscape (now Mansfield Urban) created a responsive harbourside landscape to support the architecture of Jackson Teece, providing courtyard areas and open public space in a relaxing and appropriately scaled residential development of 63 townhouses situated along the Eastern banks of Throsby Creek.

Landscape challenges for this site included the extensive site remediation required to provide horticulturally suitable soils for new planting installations. Additionally, a large fig existing on site was protected and incorporated into the landscape design. Mature Canary Island Palms created structure to the central open space areas and significant view corridors were maintained out towards the creek.

The development consisting of 52 townhouses on Newcastle Rd, Wallsend was carried out in stages and completed in September 2011.

Due to the sites close proximity to the Jesmond Shopping Precinct, zoning allowed for a high density development of this nature. Situated close by the University of Newcastle, Wallsend freeway link road and major bus route also made the site an attractive development opportunity. The design took into consideration the location and the target market, providing an attractive product at a competitive price allowing many first home buyers and investors to enter into the market.

Located in Belmont adjacent to the Belmont Lagoon, the Fernleigh Track and the old John Darling colliery mine head, this site was well located on a coastal strip to provide a small lot housing development close to established residential housing, services and schools.

Mansfield Landscape (now Mansfield Urban) was responsible for the landscape planning of the entire development including streetscapes and individual housing allotments plus the public domain interface with the adjacent school development.

One of the most successful design elements of this project is the now mature stand of trees on the street outside the development providing shade for the many school children waiting for the bus after school. Their enjoyment of this simple device is a pleasure to see.

Greenview Village was developed as a unique complex of three bedroom cottages in an established residential area after the consolidation of three lots. Located in a prime location adjacent to the highly regarded East Maitland Golf Course and Clubhouse.

Mansfield Urban was the landscape design consultant for the project developing landscape plans for DA and construction that supported each dwelling and retained local character.

The result is attractive fully landscaped grounds with a common village green and a signature mature Canary Islands Date Palm which was relocated on site to visually anchor the corner of the development.

Centrally positioned on the plaza at the corner of Ernest & Macquarie Streets and the Pacific Highway, this striking development will blend plaza level retail with contemporary apartment living. Landscaped set backs on Ernest Street and a large north facing internal garden area compliment the unique green character of the area, providing a beautiful open space and amenity for outdoor relaxation.

Mansfield Urban completed the landscape design and public interface for Belle Apartments. The development is designed to accommodate an internal landscaped courtyard as the main private landscape component. Small street facing courtyards create a dual landscape amenity, visually increasing the internal porch space while still maintaining a softer street presentation.

This development utilises existing infrastructure and breathes new life into an older local shopping precinct, bringing with it the benefits of revitalisation and introducing new built form.

This beautiful residential landscape is one of the earliest projects developed by Mansfield Landscape and was completed in 1995.

The owners have faithfully kept the original design of gateway and drive entry around a central driveway landscape feature and seperate landscaped ‘rooms’ providing seasonal vistas from all rooms within the house. Water features add view points of form and sound while restrained colour palettes lend continuity and repetition at a low line of vision tying together the broader large scale trees of the upper canopies.

The garden is a private oasis of calm and tranquility in a semi-rural setting and is a prime example of a beautifully maintained mature private landscape.

During their time of partnership as Mansfield Brodbeck, Helen Mansfield & Stacey Brodbeck were contracted by Newcastle Ports Corporation to explore prospects for the redevelopment of the Carrington Marine Precinct, and to identify any catalytic opportunities that may be latent in Carrington should Newcastle Ports Corporation cease one of its many activities in the area.

The process was hypothetical and designed to stimulate discussion and early strategic planning around possible future scenarios. This exercise provided an opportunity to explore urban design ideas without the constraints of confirmed budgets and known obstacles.

Thinking outside the square, Mansfield Brodbeck developed a set of urban design principles and a series of plans to highlight possible urban renewal opportunities in the area. The principles and plans set out to create a vibrant and diverse community that is rich with the social, economic and environmental experiences of a fully realised urban tapestry, a community that celebrates past, current and future contexts and one that contributes robustly and positively to the development of Newcastle as a world class city.

Londolovit is a village on the island of Lihir in Papua New Guinea. It is home to one of the worlds largest gold mines, then owned by Lihir Gold and now by Newcrest Mining. It was a great pleasure for Mansfield Landscape Architecture to be part of the team providing urban design services for the masterplanning of the Londolovit community. This was a unique opportunity to be involved with a remote island community impacted by global interests to develop long term strategies for sustained community development and growth during and post mining activity.

The Londolovit township is the hub of activity for the people of Lihir Island. Londolovit is a growing centre and the activities and functions of the town were undergoing rapid and significant change with the arrival of Lihir Gold Limited and the associated mining operations which created a new town and brought great benefit to the residents of Lihir. Mansfield Landscape Architecture was acutely aware of recognising important cultural aspects of the community when creating the Landscape Master Plan key design considerations. The Landscape and Public Domain vision for Londolovit Town provides a vibrant and inclusive central communal town centre where respect for diversity is celebrated within an inclusive shared public domain arena. Landscape design considerations are based on accepted standards of urban design principles and landscape architecture planning principles. The combined design considerations reflect the vision for Londolovit and take into account not only the landscape elements of plants and natural materials but also the needs of the community and the desired future landscape character that will develop over time from the design.

The Alexandra Canal study was undertaken as an exploration of the possible effects of increased density on a primarily industrialised suburb of South Sydney.

The purpose of the study was to assume a level of density of 500 persons per hectare from an existing base of around 5 per hectare and to look at the opportunities and constraints that would inform an urban design concept for the area.

Detailed data collection and analysis of landform, existing built form, landscape and street character, traffic patterns, employment opportunities and transitional workforce was undertaken and assessed in a hypothetical sense against an open design brief.

From this analysis a number of plans were developed that included structure plans and precinct plans, with precinct studies of high density areas such as Kowloon in Hong Kong compared to possible density outcomes for Alexandria.

Outcomes for this study centered on the development of new forms around a series of nine distinctive precincts with an emphasis on low cost public transport nodes, walkability, the development of local village nodes and retention and expansion of fine grain street patterning where new residential development abutted existing fine grain.

A small but important location within the redeveloped harbour side area of Honeysuckle, the Brake Block offered the opportunity to site a relevant piece of public art within a small grassed open public space.

The design challenges for this site were that the space was surrounded on two sides by through flow traffic lanes to the East and North, tall commercial residential to the West and retained heritage form (the old Brake Block for the railway yards) to the South. The context of the site was informed by combinations of new materials in the built form and scale, retained heritage form, colour and scale and the open area of grass as a potential park and site for public art in a prominent location where appreciation of the art would be both as a viewed piece from traffic passing by and from pedestrians wishing to relax in the adjoining cafes.

A decision was made to create the art work as a useable seat element within the park. Newcastle City Council called for artists to express interest in the proposal and Jeremy Robinson was selected to develop his design for candy coloured reclining timber slatted seats as a series of art seats within a grassed plane.

Mansfield Urban designed the park setting for the artwork to provide shade and connectivity to the broader context and developed the design and construction drawings for the placement and installation of the connecting pathways, planted elements and seating placement.

The result is a colourful and fun public art installation that has a direct engagement with the community as a seating element within a busy urban space.

Mansfield Urban has been involved with over 17 new energy infrastructure installations for Ausgrid over the past 6 years, primarily in the Hunter Valley.

Ausgrid has established new sub-stations in a variety of locations all with differing requirements for sensitive integration into the landscape, whether it be rural or urban.

Mansfiel Urban has worked with Ausgrid to develop supporting landscape to successfully mediate the new installation within an existing landscape context, often in difficult or sensitive areas where local community consultation is key to project success.

Some sub-stations have been located on very small urban sites in high density areas while others are located in open rural terrain. All have unique requirements for landscape design with Mansfield Urban designing specific landscape for each site in response to those requirements and context.

Rathluba Lagoon is located within a rapidly expanding area of the Lower Hunter supporting a family typology of predominantly families with children, and as such demand for high quality recreational space is increasing. As a response to perceived community need, Maitland City Council allocated funds to establish a playground within the Rathluba Lagoon Reserve. Mansfield Urban (then Mansfield Brodbeck) was engaged by Maitland City Council to assess the requirements for a playground and provide a playground masterplan for the reserve.

Significant community consultation in the form of public notifications, surveys and meetings, was carried out to determine the community requirements and perceptions for future use. The key concept plans and masterplan included key considerations that arose from community consultation as major components of the proposed reserve. The intent of the masterplan was to provide a way forward for future funds appropriation and ongoing management planning.

Macquarie College developed a campus style Christian Education experience for students to Year 12 on an 8.7 Hectare site in a bushland setting in the Western suburbs of Newcastle, Glendale.

Landscape design for the school was developed to support the campus style and utilised a low maintenance, self supporting and responsive approach to the bushland context using indemic shrub and tree species, local to the site and immediate site area. Large Spotted Gums (Coryimbia maculata), shade, play and car park areas while mass garden beds of garden native shubbery soften and connect paths and architectural features.

Mansfield Urban (then Mansfield Landscape Architecture) was part of this development project for five years, supporting stage development, and development & construction applications for the ongoing construction of the school and saw its development from initial concept to detailed construction planning and installation supervision.

Mayfield Aged Care is just one of many aged care projects that Mansfield Urban has undertaken over a number of years.

This project consisted of an extension to an existing facility in an established residential neighbourhood so context and transition were important considerations for the architectural and landscape design approaches.

Traditional planting themes with building and landscape reflecting the broader residential context were developed along with internal courtyards designed for residents with higher needs. Street fronting areas were designed to contribute to the street scape and provide recreation space, seasonal shade and visual amenity for residents and visitors.
