MAY 12, 2015 ANNUAL CONGREGATIONAL MEETING RABBI'S MESSAGE By Rabbi Michael Gold Dear Friends, One of my fondest memories of my mother-in-law, (may her memory be for a blessing), was that she could never simply answer a question. Every question brought another question in response. I would ask, “Are you joining us for dinner?” She would answer, “Why shouldn’t I join you for dinner?” She had old European roots that saw the world in terms of questions. There is something authentically Jewish about always asking questions. The Talmud is filled with rabbis questioning one another. The rabbis of the Talmud would never agree, but would constantly argue and raise questions. Sometimes when I speak to people who choose to convert to Judaism, they tell me, “In their former religion you were not allowed to question. In Judaism everything can be questioned.” Judaism is a religion of questions. And nowhere is that idea of questions more obvious than at the Passover seder. Of course a key moment in the seder is the four questions, traditionally asked by the youngest child present. “Why is this night different from all other nights? On all other nights we eat bread or matza, on this night only matza. Etc.” Most people do not realize that these particular four questions are simply sample questions. The Talmud has a slightly different version of the four questions. I try to make my seder a kind of quiz game, a ritual meal built on the mindset of Jeopardy. Do we eat matza with bitter herbs or do we eat them separately? (An- swer – we do both.) Why do we pour a cup of wine for Elijah? (Answer – there are actually five terms in the Bible for redemption, but we are not certain if the fifth step has taken place yet. So we drink four cups of wine and leave the fifth cup without drinking it. Elijah comes to answer unanswered questions.) Why do we no longer eat a roasted lamb on Passover but simply put a shank bone on our seder plate? (Answer – we must be in a state of ritual period to eat the Passover offering, and nobody today is in such a state of ritual period. For more details, google “Red Heiffer”.) Why do we not say that the Wise son excludes himself from the community? After all, he also says, what do these mean to you? (Answer – I have no idea. Even rabbis have unanswered questions.) I love being a teacher in a religion where everything is open to questioning. People sometimes tell me, “Rabbi, I have a dumb question.” I always answer, “There are no dumb questions, only dumb answers.” Part of my job is to answer questions to the best of my ability. But there is a good chance that the rabbi up the street may give a different answer. Someday according to tradition, when Elijah comes back, he will answer all the questions. But until he comes, keep asking questions. Evelyn and I, Natan, Aliza and Darren, and Ben wish you all a joyous Passover. Shalom, Rabbi Michael Gold

RABBI'S MESSAGEBy Rabbi Michael Gold

Dear Friends, One of my fondest memories of my mother-in-law, (may her memory be for a blessing), was that she could never simply answer a question.

CANTOR'S MESSAGEBy Cantor Jonathan Angress

It is that time of year again in South Florida! The summer weather is coming back but most of us are indoors doing our “spring cleaning” and preparing our homes for Passover…yes that means once again we cannot eat our regular food for over a week. To counteract the less than desirable taste of Kosher for Passover food, let us whet our appetite for some musical goodies that may add a new spin to our seders. We all know the standard staple melodies for Dayenu and Chad Gadya.

But would you believe that other melodies exist for these texts? Don’t look at me in that tone of voice…I am not joking! The texts for the most famous Passover seder songs: Dayenu, Adir Hu, Ki Lo Na’eh, and Chad Gadya existed far before the melodies that we know for them. Hundreds of years ago, each household had a different melody for these texts based on geographical location and each family’s custom. I would like to focus on two different types of melodies. The first are two melodies written in the 1600’s for Adir Hu and Ki Lo Na’eh. The exact composer of these melodies is unknown but the original music was found in a German Haggadah first published in 1644 and was edited by a non-Jew. Johann Rittangel was a Christian Hebraist who took it upon himself to write his own edition of the Passover Hag-gadah. No, none of the text was changed and the Haggadah is still considered a Jewish Haggadah, but Rittangel provided an updated German translation of the Hebrew texts. What is more astounding is that Rittangel also provided brief sheet music in the back of the Haggadah for Adir Hu and Ki Lo Na’eh. Recently, these melodies resurfaced when a Jewish high school choir in Canada performed them. A video of this performance is online…just search “Medieval Passover Song – TanenbaumCHAT” on Youtube. The other melody I want to explore is a melody for Chad Gadya that is quickly gaining in popularity. The melody that we already know was specifically written with children in mind as it is very easy to sing and remember. However, in the 1920’s, cantorial superstar Moishe Oysher was revolutionizing Jewish synagogue music by his infusing the styles and sounds of theater and jazz music into his davening. His version of Chad Gadya is a perfect example. Multiple videos exist online of this version. Just search “Chad Gadya Moishe Oysher” on Youtube. I am sure most of you were at my recent concert, A Jewish Night On Broadway which was a huge success! We had over 300 people in attendance and I am happy to announce that we raised close to $12,000 in proceeds! I am happy that the proceeds will go towards furthering our synagogue community in many new and innovative ways. Please be on the lookout for up and coming events at TBTST!Chag V’Kasher Sameach!Cantor Jonathan Angress

Community Seder on the First and Second Night of PassoverBy Nancy Marks Small, President

Passover is a major Jewish spring festival commemorating the Exodus from Egypt over 3,000 years ago. The ritual observance of this holiday centers around a special service called the Seder (“order”) and a festive meal and the eating of Matzah.

As we gather to retell the story through the Haggadah, which contains the order of prayers, rituals, and readings for the Pesach seder, it is my hope that our observances this year

help us each renew our sense of who we are and celebrate our freedom. Passover prompts spiritual introspection. The Haggadah‘s central question: What makes this night different from all other nights? prompts personal questions: What makes this season, this time of my life, this spring, different from all others? What has happened in the past year that has changed me? Have I risen to the challenges of work, family, communal responsibilities? Have I been strengthened or weakened? Passover is a magical time, when thinking about the past actually leads to thinking about the future.

TBTST presents the first and second night Seder in a family-friendly format on April 3rd and 4th. Enjoy delicious traditional kosher dinners prepared by Gourmet Expressions. The Seder on the first night will be conducted by Rabbi Michael Gold and Cantor Jonathan Angress and on the second night, by Cantor Angress. All are welcome - you, your family, and your friends.

Passover is personal, familiar, spiritual. It is public, it is private. It is physically and spiritually compelling in the most promising of ways. I, along with my family, want to wish you and your families, a Chag Kasher V’Sameach , a wonderful Pesach.

In Your Will?

The synagogue’s role begins at birth and continues with-out interruption throughout the entire course of our lives. By remembering the synagogue in our wills, we can do our part to assure future generations that their religious home will be there to serve. We depend upon more than just dues alone to sustain all that we do. If we are concerned about the future of Judaism, we must project its influence and our influ-ence into the future. Few memorials are more worthy than those provided by an en-dowment to TBTST through a bequest. Your legacy can reflect everything that is most im-portant and meaningful to you. You can declare where your funds might be used – to supply the Hebrew School, for example, or to support one of TBTST’s designated funds. We all want TBTST to be a spiritual home for genera-tions to come, just as it has been for you and your family. Let us ensure the future of our congregation and help it grow and serve our people.

It’s Springtime, and almost time for Passover! This time of year is one of the busiest for the ECC. The school year is winding down as summer camp and school registration for next year are just getting started. Spring is when many new families start to look for schooling for the upcoming year. We tend to give a lot of school tours to parents and children this time of year. I love showing off our incredible school and faculty to

prospective families while educating them about our great curriculum.

Our school has just finished our 1st annual ECC Fashion Show. It was such a wonderful event and fundraiser for our ECC. We had close to 200 ECC families and extended relatives in our Social Hall cheering on their TBTST child or fam-ily member. We had a delicious catered brunch by our preschool parent, Marshall Goldberg, great boutique shopping and raffle prizes, all supporting our ECC. The event was a huge success and we are already brainstorming about next year’s theme!

Summer camp and school registration for next year is in full swing. We had so many families participate in our Mitzvah Day Early Bird enrollment special for camp and school. It was so nice to see so many Early Childhood families here on Mitzvah Day. There is still time to register and receive a discount on camp. Space is limited in certain groups but please call the ECC office for more information.

May 1st will be our Teacher Appreciation Shabbat. Our ECC children have begun working with the Cantor to be able to participate in the Shabbat service. We en-courage all young families, regardless if you attend the ECC, to attend this Shabbat service and help honor our amazing teachers and support our ECC.

Our next and last Tot Shabbat for the school year will be on Friday, May 15th. More information will be posted on the Facebook page soon as well as posted in the Education Wing. We really hope you will be able to join us for our last Tot Shabbat of the school year.

Thanks to everyone involved, for your continued support of our ECC program and TBTST!

Since we are going to be in Pesach by the time you receive this edition of our Scroll, I think it is time to go back all the way to the beginning. So, how did we end up in Egypt? The Story of Passover begins with 20 shekels of silver. That is what Joseph’s brothers received for selling him to the Is-maelites who brought him to Egypt as a slave. Because of

Joseph’s amazing ability to interpret Pharaoh’s dreams, he quickly rose to power and become a person that was regarded in high esteem. He had the ability to let people know of the prosperous seven years followed by seven years of famine and because he knew what was going to happen, he developed a plan. Joseph oversaw the distribution of food to all who came from near and far. Because of the great drought and hunger, Jacob, Joseph’s father sent his sons to Egypt to buy grain. After an emotional reunion with his brothers, Joseph invited his father and the entire family to come and live in Egypt where there was plenty of food and they could prosper and live well. Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end. When a new Pharaoh came into power who did not know of Joseph’s amazing great deeds, things did not go well for the family. The Jews were rapidly increasing in numbers, and out of fear and ignorance, Pharaoh, decided to make all the Jews in the land his slaves. They were then slaves for 210 years. During this most difficult time, Pharaoh embittered their lives and gave them humiliating and difficult back-breaking work. G-d heard the cries from the Jews. He called upon a man named Moses to save his people, the children of Israel. Moses went to Pharaoh and asked him to “Let My People Go.” One by one G-d sent terrible plagues to convince the Pharaoh to release the Jews, but in each case he refused to let the Israelites go. Finally, when G-d sent the tenth plague, the death of every first born Egyptian child, only then did Pharaoh finally relent. During Pesach as with any holiday, it is customary to continue with our Mitzvot and to give to the poor. It is also tradition to celebrate Pesach by eating matzah, having a Pesach seder and attending synagogue. Check the Scroll for the Pesach schedule and from my family to yours, Chag Pesach Sameach.

The Membership Committee meets every month on the first Wednesday at 7:00 pm. If interested, please call Jody Glass at 954-263-6778 or email [email protected]. We hope you will join us.

Annie-Themed Convention,Will Unite the HaNegev Region

By: Sammie Gaynor

It was a hard-knock life for the Israelites when they wan-dered for 40 years in the desert, but they eventually found their home. Luckily, Youth Group doesn’t have to wait nearly that long! Going to USY, Kadima, or Pre-Kadima at TBTST is like finding your home, especially with the amazing USY Regional Convention for the month of April.

The sun will come out tomorrow for the day before this Annie-Themed Convention. USYers will spend a non-

stop weekend of fun in Orlando, Florida from April 17-19. Regional elections will take place and TBTST President Allison Beer, from our own chapter, will run for a Regional Communications Vice President position. The convention will be located in the Mercaz Sub Region and Co-Chaired by General Board SATO, Hannah Weiss, and Co-President of BTBRC in Arvot, Logan Miller. They’ve worked tirelessly to ensure the best weekend possible. “We will be tying in Annie through everything, from mixers names to the actual mixers, to the dance decorations and everything,” Weiss said. “We can’t wait to see everyone there—meeting new people has always been one of the best parts of convention for me. Logan and I have dedicated everything we have to this conven-tion, and I know it’s going to be a blast.” Some of the other activities taking place will be a semi-formal dance and a HUSY competition which usually only takes place at International Convention. This is the first time that competition, involving the beloved USY mascot, will take place at a regional convention. With a fun theme and creative activities, this year’s regional convention should be one of the best ones yet! In other great news, Harrison Faerman has been elected as Arvot Sub Regional Secretary. TBTST has also brought home Bro Nebbish from Arvot SATO Sunday. Winning Bro means we have been the most improved chapter of the year. The Sharks have overcome a tough merger and have become the most wonderful TBTST SHARKS we can be!

Sisterhood Announces Afternoon MeetingsTo be held on the 3rd Wednesday of each month,

We are looking forward to your attendance!

TBTST SISTERHOODBy Ellen Feldman, President

While most of the country has been dealing with a very long winter and longing for spring, we at Sisterhood were well on our way in anticipation of Passover. On March 15th we held our very own Women’s Seder. Yasher Koach to Maddy Policzer and Risa Askin for leading us through the Seder rituals with a Hagaddah specially compiled by Sherry

Klawsky. Just a week later, our sisterhood was proudly showcased as an unprecedented number of our members participated in our annual Sisterhood Shabbat. During both the Friday night and Saturday morning services, the women took on the role of rabbi, read Torah and led the congregation in prayer. A sea of purple could be seen as we all wore the kippah hand-crocheted for this special Shabbat by Sharon Rosenthal. A lovely Kiddush followed services and many thanks to Norma Freimark for all the centerpieces. And once again, many thanks to Elise Leonard and Susan Kaplan for donating the flowers on the bimah. It has become our tradition on this occasion to sponsor a charity. This year we selected the JAFCO Respite and Residential Center for Children With Developmental Disabilities. Currently 1 out of 10 children is diagnosed with a developmental disability. Thank you to all who donated; by doing so we have fulfilled the three tenets of Judaism: Torah, worship and loving deeds. On March 12th our Sisterhood had the pleasure of hosting a regional Torah Training session with Debbi Goldrich. We all benefitted from her expertise. Sisterhood’s Fashion Show will take place on April 26th and this year Nancy Small will be our honoree. It is our pleasure to take this opportunity to acknowledge her dedication, devotion and commitment to our synagogue. We will be modeling fashions from Sara Mique and Fannie’s of Parkland with a special emphasis this year on accessories. The event is always a Sisterhood highlight. We look forward to seeing you there. Wishing you and yours and very joyous Passover!

Parking Lot Safety

Did you know that one of the likeliest places to be involved in a fender bender is in a parking lot? People seem to suspend their good judgment when looking for a parking space or when pulling out of one. Coming in, our first reaction is to dart forward to be the first to claim the closest spot possible. In our parking lot, most people park face in. There is nothing wrong with that, but you have to be extra cau-tious when backing out, because the car just opposite you may be doing the same thing at the same time. Always make a 360 degree check as you back out. Also, if you are here during the week, remember that our parking lot is accessed via 94th Avenue and there is both an elementary and a middle school just across the street. Watch out for kids crossing the street before you make your turn onto 94th Avenue. Be sure to check the time and to observe the school zone speed limits if they are in force. Here are some other tips:

• Hide or remove your valuables when leaving your car and be sure to lock the car when you step way. Even if you are just picking up your child from our Hebrew School, it only takes a minute for a thief to grab your cell phone or your purse.

• Leave your engine running until you’ve gathered everything and you’re ready to get out of the car but be sure to turn it off when you do.

• Be alert to notice other people in the parking lot. If your sixth sense urges caution, heed it and do not leave the car.

• When you’re walking back to your car, keep your keys in hand, so you can get into the car quickly.

• If you are looking for your car, press the lock door key, not the open door key to get your car to tell you where it is.

• Lock your doors once you get inside the car.

The Sisterhood of TBTST is pleased to present the College Connection program. We reach out to our families whose sons and daughters are away from home to provide them with a connection to TBTST. College Connection provides holiday gift packages during the academic school year and communicates quarterly with students. To help us stay in touch with your college student, please let us know their name and where they are – you can drop the information off at the office or email it to Sisterhood cpresident Ellen Feldman @ [email protected].

Why Not Join aChavurah?

As part of our New Roads to Engagement Project, Temple Beth Torah Sha'aray Tzedek is encouraging couples or families to bring their com-mon interests to the syna-gogue. This is not a religious group, but a group of family or friends that want to social-ize together. Perhaps it is an existing group of friends that you join each month to have dinner with, see a movie or attend a play. Any group of people with common inter-ests can form a Chavurah. Shortly, you will receive a brochure and questionnaire describing this concept, and asking only for you to complete and return the questionnaire to the syna-gogue office. Based on your responses, we will form a group that fits your needs. Please join with us as we reach out and engage our congregation. Watch for our brochure!

Men’s ClubBarry Kanarek, M.D., President - [email protected]

I want to thank members of our Club’s cooking team for once again coming through and preparing a wonderful meatball spa-ghetti dinner before Purim services on March 4th. You can go to the TBTST Facebook page and see a picture of the group hard at work in the photo section. Our Yom Hashoah candles have arrived. We will soon be gathering on the evening of March 31st with children of the Hebrew School to pack the candles while discussing their thoughts and questions

about the Shoah. As we did last year with every candle sent out we included the name of a child who was murdered in the Holocaust along with the site and date. It was so meaningful to know that when we lit our candles we were doing it not only for loved ones we may have known but for a child who might have been completely forgotten. We will once again be sending out our candles with more names of murdered children of the Shoah after receiving such meaningful feed-back last year. I ask you all to open your hearts when receiving the candles, list of children’s name and meditation to be recited and send in a contribution so that we can continue this initiative every year and truly never forget! Just a reminder the FJMC biennial Convention is coming up July 8th. It will be held this year at the Deauville Hotel in Miami Beach. This year we will be install-ing Alan Gottesman, one of our own TBTST members as International President.I have also been asked the join as a member of the Florida Region BOD as Record-ing Secretary. I look forward to be able to serve our Region. We are always looking for men interested in getting actively involved with the Men’s Club. Please feel free to contact me at [email protected] Brotherhood,Barry Kanarek, MDPresident

Why Not Join a Committee?

As it happens, much of the “work” of TBTST and most of the planning takes place in committees. So, committee mem-bership is a great place to begin becoming involved in synagogue life. Every congregation relies on its volunteers both to work and to lead. Most committees are open to all who are interested and willing to participate. Two committees that are very in-terested in finding new, enthusias-tic members are the Membership Committee, and the Marketing and Communications Committee. Volunteers are always welcome to be part of our Tikkun Olam com-mittee, the sponsors of our enor-mously successful annual Mitzvah Day. The Rabbi is always looking for people interested in the Adult Education Committee. Our Ways and Means Committee serves as a program committee and manages many of our synagogue events. Extra hands are always sought to help in those activities. If you have children, you know about our PTOs. Keep them in mind as well. Both the Sisterhood and the Men’s Club sponsor programs and support activities that benefit the synagogue. They both do their work in a social atmosphere and many deep friendships have arisen among their members. If the notion of a committee conjures up the world of corporations, cubicles and bureaucracy (ours are much friendlier by the way) think about becoming active in one of our auxiliaries. Only you know what might interest you and, if you do, let the office know and they will put you in touch with the relevant chairperson. If you know that you would like to help, but are unsure about just what you might enjoy doing, talk to one of the officers of the congregation or to the presidents of the Sisterhood or the Men’s Club.

DUELING PIANOS........A Great EveningBy Sandi Katz

Those members who did not attend last Saturday evening’s Dueling Pianos really missed out on a fun-filled night of fantastic entertainment. Are there really that many people our there who do not like live music? For $50.00 per person, we were taken away from life’s everyday routines to experience the talents of two extraordinary piano players who took all requests with enthusiasm and style in out very own temple social hall!

The Mexican themed dinner buffet was delicious with its array of fajitas, black beans, rice, chicken and sautéed vegetables, salmon, guacamole, shredded lettuce, bowls of guacamole, chips and salsa. I thought everything was delicious although I am a bit bias as I love Mexican food!

Jeff Reisch did an amazing job on this event. Both Jeff and Bruce Katz served margaritas and a bevy of mixed drinks, beer and wine for a minimal fee.

Barbara Eisensmith and Suzi Siegel did a marvelous job on decor for the evening. The tables were colorful and added whimsy to the already fabulous high volumed music filled room.

Havannagilah played joyously and the crowd broke into a jubilant hora! A conga line commenced as well and dancing continued throughout the night. What was there not to like? The music was over in an amazing short two hours however, they continued for another half hour to revelers cheering and singing loudly!

We must repeat this night again. For those who did not attend, too bad, you really missed out!

Sandi Katz

Share Your Experienceswith the TBTST Family

• Do you plan to visit an interesting city, museum or event this summer, or have you done so already?• Have you read a great book with Jewish content that you’d like to share with others?• Or, seen a film that really moved you?• Did a recent experience help you to see things in a different way?•Do you belong to an organization that does good work and that we should know about?•Do you want to share a great web site that you have found valuable in your Jewish life?•Do you have a family recipe (kosher, of course) that you think your friends at TBTST would like to know about?

Why not share it?

If you have a topic that you think would be of interest to other congregants, let us know. We’ll ask you to write a short article (emphasis on short!) about your experience for possible insertion into the Scroll and to provide pic-tures if relevant. Writing should be conversational in tone and if you mention other congregants in your article, please confirm their approval in advance.

Contact Steve Sax at [email protected] if you would like to sub-mit an article.Note: All articles will be edited for grammar and clarity, and their use will depend on space available; however, if there is no timeliness involved, we will hold articles for future issues.

Calling all Temple Beth Torah Sha'arey Tzedek members in their 20s and 30s; we have a Chavurah group for you! It doesn't matter if you are single, married - with or without children - this social group is open to all 20 and 30-somethings. If you are interested, please send an email to Melanie Farber at [email protected]

I would like to thank David Jaspan for arranging our lovely get together we had on Thursday, March 5, which also happened to be his birthday. We all met at the Kingspoint Diner for a lovely lunch and great conversation. We got to sing Happy Birthday to David, even the waiter and waitress joined in. He was really surprised.. Also, we would like to wish Doris, Estelle, and Albie a Happy Birthday. Glad to wish Mildred Goldstein a speedy recovery and hurry back to us, we miss you. Our next get together will be in May at Dolores Friedman' house. We the Rishom Chavuah wish the entire Congregation a Healthy and Happy Passover. Gloria Rosenblum

Ruach Chavurah met at the home of Sharon and Roy Trachtenberg for a light dinner and discussion. Passover traditions and Israeli PM Netanyahu's speech to Congress were just two of the topics discussed. We celebrated members' simchas, including birthdays, an anniversary and more.Sharon Rosenthal

Chavurah Report“b’sever panim yafot “ The above quote ends the second-to-last tractate in the order of Nezikin (damages) in the Talmud. The tractate is more often known as Pirkei Avot, literally, the Chapters of our Fathers. Interestingly, in Modern Hebrew it is a common expression used to denote “with open arms.” Our president and board have been discussing the concept of “with open arms,” not in a Toraic concept but with the idea of becoming a more welcoming and engaging Congregation. Every committee of our congregation is open to the concept. We need volunteers and we need you to think about how you can help. We have several active committees who do much of the planning that make membership in TBTST so valuable to so many. Everyone is looking for people to step forward and share their expertise, opinions and time to make those efforts successful. Of course, the Men’s Club and the Sisterhood are obvious places for you to help support activities that benefit TBTST. The Men’s Club motto – doing good while having fun – really belongs to all of them. In the Scroll, you often read about the Tikkun Olam/Mitzvah committee. Committed hands are always welcome. The membership committee has a number of projects that would help you feel more engaged while welcoming others. The Rabbi is always looking for people interested in widening the work of the Membership Committee and our Ways and Means Committee is not just an “ask for money” group, but is involved in planning many of our events. And, by the way the Scroll would be happy to have you aboard as well.

Haymesh Chavarah Group 5 DoingsBy Helaine Norman Cain and E. Janet Sheldon

We have truly formed a haymesh group of friends (thus our group’s name) and want to encourage other chavarah groups to contribute articles telling about their doings so all groups can share ideas. Below are some of the activities enjoyed by our group for the months of January, February and March 2015. January:A wonderful time was had by all one evening at the home of Janet & Stuart Sheldon. Their nephew Gary Sheldon and Conductor of the Miami City Ballet Orchestra charmed us all with his presentation of Backstage At The Ballet and insights into the Ballet. It included a DVD of West Side Story. Afterward we enjoyed an assortment of desserts, teas and coffees. We attended the show Five Guys Named Mo at the Stage Door theater and had dinner out together afterward. We enjoyed another evening of dinner out and a Freddie Roman show at Kings Point.February:We spent Saturday evening, February 14, having dinner together and then attending the Tribute to Barbra Streisand show at the Palace Theatre. Faye and Herb Kronberg hosted the meeting on Sunday, February 15 at their Condo in Kings Point, followed by dinner at a local restaurant.March:Purim was celebrated together at the temple’s spaghetti dinner and during Rabbi Cain’s (a fellow chavarah member) Megilah reading. See our picture at the dinner. Faye and Herb Kronberg, again, openheartedly hosted a meeting at their home on February 12 and all had dinner out together.

A Day of Tikkun Olam at TBTSTBy Jacqui Montag, Tikkun Olam Chairperson

Tikkun Olam is a basic principle of Judaism; and on March 1, 2015, our congregants turned out in full force. We donated blood, we visited a senior residence, entertained them and brought them flowers, too. Participants worked as an assembly line and made hundreds of PBJ sandwiches for Broward Cooperative Feeding Service. WECARE Food Bank always has a special place in our hearts; and we were able to bring loads of donated food and toiletries to them. We will also donate a check to WECARE from the proceeds of t-shirt sales. Sisterhood made fringed, fleece blankets for hospitals and senior residences. We collected many bags of donated clothing and other items for various organizations and agencies helping those in need. We also donated supplies to the Humane Society and luggage to JAFCO for teens aging out of the system. Volunteers visited the residents at Hatikvah House in Coral Springs, and baked cookies with them. Our young people had projects to do as well. Hebrew School students visited a senior residence near our shul. Others donated funds for toiletries and supplies for families staying at Ronald McDonald House and made get well cards for the patients. Youth Group volunteers made bags of toiletries for homeless veterans. Our pre-school children made greeting cards for American and Israeli soldiers. All in all, our synagogue had a productive and emotionally rewarding day. This day would never have been possible without our dedicated and caring Tikkun Olam Committee. Thank you all for your creativity and hard work. I also thank those who stepped up on Mitzvah Day and ran projects and delivered donated goods to the various places that needed them. All our congregants who participated, from pre-school children to seniors and everyone in between, helped make the day a success. Last, but not least, hearty thanks to our sponsors who helped us to accomplish our Tikkun Olam goals: Publix, Target Plantation, Target Tamarac, Sam’s Club Coral Springs, Costco Davie, Whole Foods Coral Springs, BJ’s Ft. Lauderdale, Diamond Caterers, and Sterling Caterers. We appreciate your generosity in working with us to help those less fortunate.

APRIL 2015 TEMPLE BETH TORAH SHA'ARAY TZEDEK NISSAN / IYAR 5775

Tree of LifeThe tree has always been a symbol of life and strength in the Jewish tradi-tion. The parts of the tree depend upon one another just as those in need in our community depend upon Temple Beth Torah Sha'aray Tzedek for help and support.

In the same manner, Temple Beth Torah Sha'aray Tzedek depends upon the generosity of our community to enable us to continue to provide that support. The Tree of Life is the perfect symbol to allow us to recognize the generous donors who, in turn, help us to continue providing necessary services to our community.

Consider honoring a friend or relative’s birthday, Bar/Bat Mitzvah, anniversary, etc. or using this as a memorial gift. By purchasing a leaf for the Tree of Life, you will not only be helping the Tree to grow, but you will also be helping TBTST to grow, now and in the future. There are gold, silver and bronze leaves available at a price of $180.If you are interested in supporting TBTST, please contact our office and we will gladly assist you. You can also email [email protected] or make your donation online at www.tbtst.org.

Thank you for your donation.

PRAYERS FOR THE SICK If a relative or friend is suffering from an illness, perhaps you would like to recite a special prayer for the speedy recovery of the ailing person. Traditionally, the Hebrew name of the sick person and the Hebrew name of the sick person's mother are mentioned during the prayer. It would be helpful if you would provide us with this information when you make your request. Prayers for the recovery of the sick are customarily accompanied by a gift to a deserving charity. The merit of this kind deed arouses God's mercy and His powers of healing. Although any amount is deemed appropriate on such an occasion, a gift of CHAI - $18 - or multiples of 18 - is particularly fitting when pleading for a person's recovery from sickness. CHAI in Hebrew means life. The two Hebrew letters which constitute the word - CHET and YUD - have the numerical equivalents of eight and ten respectively, together yielding the sum of eighteen. For this reason it has become a custom to give charity in the amount of CHAI when praying for the well-being of a suffering person. Enclosed please find a contribution in the sum of $ _____________________________________________________Please make a Misheberach (Prayer for the recovery) for:Name (English) _________________________________________________________________________________(Hebrew)_______________________Mother's Name (Hebrew) ___________________________________________

Yahrzeit is a Yiddish word, which literally means “time of year” or memorial. Jews of Ashkenazi descent use this term. Sephardim call this commemoration nahala, in Ladino. This custom is widely observed and based on the Jewish tradition of commemorating the death of a relative.

All the Yahrzeit rituals are deeply ingrained in the Jewish life. The common rituals that are performed in the honorable memory of the departed soul include reciting the Kaddish prayer and lighting a Yahrzeit candle.

Yahrzeit also includes the action of donating charity in memory of a deceased loved one. Through the performance of the mitzvah of tzedakah in the name of the departed, the merit of the deed is shared with the soul of the late relative, as their memory is enhanced.

Become an important part of TBTST's Social Action Committee’sMazon Project

The WECARE community outreach program operates a food pantry that provides over 3,500 bags of groceries each year to our neighbors in need regardless of race, religion, age, gender or nationality. We could not accomplish this important mitzvah if not for the generous donations we re-ceive year round from caring individuals, organizations, schools, synagogues and businesses in our community. Thanks to United Way of Broward County, we are also able to distribute fresh produce to needy people through Project Lifeline. Donations are greatly needed and appreciated to keep our shelves stocked so we can help the many men, women and children needing our services throughout the year. Currently, WECARE provides enough free non-perishable food and fresh produce to prepare over 65,000 meals for our neighbors in need. WECARE also collects small toiletry items, provides free medical equipment loans including wheelchairs, walkers and canes, distributes hand-knitted items to nursing home residents, and collects eyeglasses and hearing aids that are sent to New Eyes for the Needy. Donations of toiletry items and medical equipment are very much appreciated. Facts about Hunger in Broward County According to Million Meals Committee, there are 19 active food pantries in Broward County inclusive of the Soref JCC WECARE Food Pantry, and 4 active food banks. The Broward Regional Health Planning Council, Inc., Food Security Survey Report notes that 44% of all students enrolled in Broward County elementary schools qualify for free and reduced lunches. 15% of 56,873 Broward children live in poverty.

Consider TBTST for Your Next

Simcha

Your next simcha, be it a bar or bat mitzvah, an anniversary party or a wedding, will be one of your family’s milestones – a day you will talk about for years to come. You want the day to be memorable and you want to look back on it fondly. That is why when we built our new building we created a welcoming facility for catered events. Our magnificent new social hall, our state of the art kitchen, our adjoining bride’s room, and our very attractive lobby have all been designed with one idea – to make simchas that are celebrated at TBTST those that will meet everyone’s standard of excellence. Our caterers are dedicated to helping to organize and manage your event and to meet your needs and expectations. Please contact our Temple Office (954) 721-7600 to obtain more information about our caterers and our facilities.
