Wakulla receives gifts, funds worth celebratingBonnie Holub
Christmashascomeandgone,leavingfolkstoenjoynewgiftsandlookingforwardtotheexcitementandpossibilitiesthatcomewithanewyear.AndsoitiswithWakullaCounty.Overthepastyear,WakullaCountyreceivedseverallargegiftsfilledwiththepromiseofeducational,recreationalandeconomicopportunitiesforyearstocome.
Firstisthe$4.5-millionallocationfromthe2012FloridaLegislaturetoTallahassee Community CollegetoestablishtheWakullaEnvironmentalInstitute.TheExecutiveDirectorfortheWEI,BobBallard,wasappointedinJulyandisworkingtocreatea“worldclass”environmentalinstitutenearCrawfordville.TheWEIisalreadyofferingonlinecourseswhichcanleadtoawaterqualitytechniciancertificateorenvironmentalsciencetechnologyA.S.degree.FutureplansincludeanewTCCWEIfacility,whichwillofferarangeoftraditionalclassroomstudies,onlineclasses,fieldexperiences,ecotourismactivitiesandotherservices.TCCrecentlyearmarkedanadditional$382,000forthepurchaseoflandfortheinstituteadjacenttoHighway319,southofCrawfordville.TheinitialarchitecturaldrawingsforthefacilityillustrateaFlorida“crackerstyle”buildingapropostothewoodedlandscapewhichwillbebuilttoserveasamodelforenergyefficiency.
TCCwasawarded$670,000inSeptemberfromtheFloridaDepartmentofEducationtosupporta21stCenturyCommunityLearningCenterPrograminWakullaCountyforthe2012-2013schoolyear.Andmorefundsareexpected.Thetotalawardwillbecloseto$3millionoverafive-yearprojectperiod.Thefundsarebeingusedtoprovidechildrenwithadditionalacademicandpersonalenrichmentactivitiesthroughafter-schoolandsummerprograms.TheprogramservesPreKthroughmiddleschoolstudentsandincorporatesstrategiestoincreaseparentinvolvementintheirchildren’sstudies.The21stCCLCisacollaborativeeffortamongTCC,WakullaCountySchools,WakullaChristianSchoolandCommunitiesinSchoolsofFlorida.Over120Wakullastudentsarecurrentlyreceivingafterschoolacademicenhancementthroughtheprogram.
InNovember,$500,000wasawardedtotheWakullaCountyTouristDevelopmentCouncilfromtheGulfTourismandSeafoodPromotionalFund,afundsupportedbyBPinresponsetotheDeepWaterHorizonOilSpill.“TheWakullaTouristDevelopmentCouncilislookingforwardtoworkingwithourlocaltourismandseafoodindustrypartnerstomakethemostofthisrarefundingopportunity,”saidWakullaTDCDirectorPamPortwood.
ThemoneyisbeingusedtoaccelerateWakulla’stourismandseafoodmarketingcampaignsandpromoteabrandforWakulla’sseafoodproducts,“FreshfromWakulla,”similartothenamerecognitionfor“Vidalia”onionsand“Ruskin”tomatoes.Withthesefunds,theWTDCwillimplementsophisticatedandfar-reachingmarketingstrategiestomakeWakulla,andourresources,morerecognizableacrossthestateandcountry.Andmaybeasasidebenefit,the“Wakooola”pronunciationwilldisappear.Darewehope?
Andthenthere’sauniquegiftofanticipation.Youprobablyknowthefeeling.AsachildyouknewSantawascomingandyouanticipatedhewouldleaveatreatinyourstockingandsomethingreallyspecialunderthetree...ifyouweregood,ofcourse.Youdidn’tknowwhatyouweregoingtoget,althoughyoubelievedandhopedwithallyourheart,itwouldbewhatyouaskedfor.YoumightsaythereisasimilarfeelingofanticipationinWakullathesedays.AlthoughitistooearlytotellwhatgiftswillmaterializethroughtheRESTOREACTof2012,(ResourcesandEcosystemsSustainability,TouristOpportunitiesandRevivedEconomiesoftheGulfCoastStatesActof2012)thecountyispreparingforthepossibilityofreceiving$2millionto$20millionworthofprojectfunding,accordingtoDavidEdwards,WakullaCountyAdministrator.Andmaybeevenmore.Edwardsnotedthatifthesefundsareawarded,theywon’tnecessarilybeawardeddirectlytoWakullaCounty,butcouldfundarangeofprojectsthatdirectlybenefitWakullaCountyandsurroundingareas.
TheWakullaCountyRESTOREActAdvisoryCommitteewasformedlastmonthtoreceiveprojectproposalapplicationsandadvisetheWakullaCountyBoardofCountyCommissionersonprojectsforpotentialRESTOREActfunding.Theapplicationprocesshasnotyetbeenestablished,butwillbeimplementedifandwhenthefundsareavailable.

Texas Campus Shooting Prompts Safety Questions in Our AreaSomemightconsiderthemeetingbetweenschoolrepsandthesenateeducationappropriationscommitteetodiscusscampussafetyfundingastrangecoincidence.ItcamejustonedayafteraTexascollegecampusshootinginjuredthreepeople.
“Unfortunatelyit’snotodd,intheworldoflawenforcementandjusttheworldwelivein,thesetypesofsituationscanhappenatanymoment,anyday,andanytime,”saidFloridaSatepolicechiefDavidPerry.
ChiefPerrysaysthosefactors,alongwiththeopennessofmanycollegecampusesincreasetheneedforcampussafety.Tallahassee Community CollegepresidentJimMurdaughspokewiththecommitteeonhowmoneycouldbeusedtoprovideguidanceservicesforstudentswhoshowemotionalorbehavioralwarningsigns.
“There’snon-recurringissuesthatcanbedealtwithandthere’srecurringissuesthatcanbedealtwithintermsofthestaffingthatwecanprovideformentalhealthservicesandotherservicesforstudents,”saidMurdaugh.
Technologicalefforts,liketheemergencybluelightsystemsthatarecommonplaceoncampusesacrossthecountry,canhelp.ButPerrysaysthatstatemoneyformoremanpowerwouldgoalongwayinkeepingstudentssafe.
“Oneofficerforevery600students.That’sameasurethatthestateuniversitychiefshopewillstillbereviewedandadoptedintimewhenbudgetsdoallow,”saidPerry.
Thecommitteewilldeterminehowmuchmorefundingtoprovide,ifany,afterGovernorRickScottreleaseshisbudgetforthestate.

CherryHallAlexandersaidwhenshefirststartedhonoringlocalblackleadersinacalendar13yearsagoshewantedtoshowyoungblackchildrentheyhadheroesclosetohome.
Thirteenyearslaterandit’ssafetosayshe’smakinganimpactonhertargetedaudience—justaskTallahassee Community CollegefreshmanDelaitreHollinger.
Hollingerhasbeenbusysincethestartof2012.HemadeanameforhimselfasanactivistandranforCityCommissionSeat1.HesaidheplanstogotoFloridaA&MUniversityandcompleteadegreeinjournalismnext.HecreditedAlexander’syearlycalendars,whichhehasbeencollectingsincefourthgrade,forstartinghimontherightpath.
“Beingheretonightandbeinghonoredamongsomanypeoplehereinthecommunityisreallysurrealforme,”hesaid.“Thecalendarisdoingwhatit’ssupposedtodo.It’sinspiringtheyouthofthecommunitytobealltheycanbe.”
Hollingerwasoneof14blackleadershonoredduringanunveilingMondayeveningforthe2013CherryAlexanderAfrican-AmericanHistoryCalendar.Theevent,whichalsoservedasakick-offforBlackHistoryMonthinFebruary,broughttogetherall14honoreesaswellasafewfacesfrompreviouscalendars.
Thecalendar’sthemethisyearis“AttheCrossroadsofFreedomandEquality:150YearsofProgressionandAdvancement.”AlexandersaidputtinglocalfacesinthecalendariscriticaltomakingitrelevanttostudentsintheBigBendregion.BarackObamamightbeintheWhiteHouse,shesaid,butthatisinWashington.Localheroesarewhatmakethecalendarspecial.
“Thisisawaytohelpouryoungpeopledreamtodowhatevertheywanttodowhenevertheywanttodoit,”shesaid.“That’sthetruth.Justtakeyourtimeanddoit.”
HonoreesweretreatedtoperformancesfromTCC’sAfricanDrumandDanceEnsembleandRuedigerElementarySchool’sMathematicalDrummersandDancers.Rep.AlanWilliamssaidthecalendarisaspecialpartofthecommunityhe’shonoredtobeapartof.
“Idon’tknowifI’mquitedeservingofit,”Williamssaid.“Butit’ssomethingI’llusetocontinuetodrivemetomakesureI’mdoingallIcantonotonlyrepresentblackmembersofourcommunitybutallFloridians.”
FAMUinterimpresidentLarryRobinsonsaidthecalendarshouldserveasaremindertocontinuecommunityservice.
“Communityserviceisoneofthegreatestpillarswehaveat(FAMU)andourstudentsaresomeofthemostsociallyconsciousintheworld,”hesaid.“ToseethatI’mbeingacknowledgedformycommunityservicewillhelpthemseehowimportantitis.”

Florida Sterling Council brings performance program to TallahasseeDave Hodges ThepowerofimprovedperformanceintheworkplacewasamessagethatresonatedwithJoeCheatham,whohasledthateffortinhisownorganizationandhelpedothersachieveitaswell.
Cheatham,operationsmanagerattheCityofTallahasseeWastewaterTreatmentDepartment,beganworkingwiththeFloridaSterlingCouncilthreeyearsagoasavolunteer.“IwentoutonalimbandbecameaSterlingexaminer,”hesaid.“Itwasaneye-openingexperience.”
Throughworkingwithparticipatingorganizations,Cheathamgotthechancetoevaluatethemontheirperformance,butalsosawthingshecouldimplementinhisowndepartment.LastyearWastewaterTreatmentcontractedwiththeSterlingCounciltohaveanin-housestrategicplanningworkshopandbegintheimprovementprocess.
TheFloridaSterlingCouncil,apublic/privatenonprofitsupportedbytheExecutiveOfficeoftheGovernor,wasstartedin1992.Gov.LawtonChileswantedaninitiativeinstategovernmentthatwascomparabletotheMalcolmBaldrigeCriteriaforPerformanceExcellence,whichhadbeenhavingapositiveeffectonfederalagencies.
ThecouncilisledbytheExecutiveCommittee,whichoverseestheannualGovernor’sSterlingAwardforPerformanceExcellenceandallSterlingprocessactivitiesandtraining.
ComingupFeb.14isthePerformanceImprovementSummit,tobeheldinTallahasseeattheCenterforWorkforceDevelopmentatTallahassee Community College.Theprogramconsistsof90-minuteworkshopsonvariousbestpractices,howtobuildexcellenceinleadership,andapproachestoprocessimprovement.
AmongthespeakersareTCCPresidentJimMurdaugh;BeckyGill,areadirectorofperformanceimprovementatTheRitz-CarltonHotelCo.;andSteveDickinson,presidentofPracticalQualitySolutions.
TheTallahasseeevent,whichincludesapre-summitsessionFeb.13,ispatternedafterthebigSterlingconferenceheldannuallyinOrlando.“WebroughtthistoTallahasseesowecanhavemoreofanimpactinthePanhandle,”saidDioneGeiger,executivedirectorofthecouncil.
Inhisdepartment,CheathamusedSterling’sresourcesandguidancetotrainleadersonhisteamandhelpthembemoreeffectiveonthejob.Theyimprovedtheircustomerservicethroughuseofanonlinequestionnaireandfocusgroups,andalsoformedaprocessimprovementteamtotrackthedepartment’sperformanceandgradeitagainstthatofotherutilities,hesaid.
Athiscompany,FBMCBenefitsManagement,DavidFaulkenberrysaiduseofSterling’sprinciplesaidsinreviewingbusinessprocesses,andthetoolsavailablehelpedinbuildingbetterleaders.
“Thenweusetheleadershipprocesseswehavebuilttobecomeahigh-performanceorganization,”saidFaulkenberry,FBMC’spresidentandalsothecouncil’ssecretary/treasurerthisyear.
ManycompaniesonlyassociatethecouncilwiththeGovernor’sSterlingAwards.“Itissomuchmorethanthat,”hesaid.“It’sanorganizationthatprovidesoutstandingtrainingandperformancemanagementservices.WehaveachanceinTallahasseewiththissummittohaveaccesstotheverybesttrainingandresources.”

TCC Wakulla Center offering course for those in nature-based fieldTALLAHASSEE,Fla.–Tallahassee Community College’sWakullaCenterwillofferaGreenGuideCertificationcoursebeginningTuesday,February12.
TheWakullaCenterisatCrawfordville’sCentennialBankbuilding,locatedat2932CrawfordvilleHighway.
The90-hourcourseisdesignedforindividualswhoareinterestedinstartinganature-basedbusiness,findingemploymentinanature-basedfield,andforthosewhosimplywishtolearnmoreabouttheBigBendRegion’snaturalenvironment.
Theclasswillmeettwoeveningsperweek,primarilyonTuesdayandThursday,forclassroomstudiesandagainonSaturdayforafieldtrip.
AsamplingofGreenGuidecertificationclassesincludesnorthFloridatrees,geologicalfeatures,mammalsandreptiles,andbusinessbasics.Fieldtripswillexploretopicssuchasbirdingandsealife,naturephotography,historyandkayaking.

TCC to host lecture on global hungerTALLAHASSEE,Fla.--“AGlobalPerspectiveonHungerandMalnutrition,”at1p.m.,Monday,February18intheStudentUnionBallroom.
ThelecturewillbeledbyprofessorBillClayfromFloridaStateUniversity’sCollegeofHumanSciences.
Currently,over900millionpeopleworldwide–approximately13percentoftheworld’spopulation-arechronicallyhungryandnevergetenoughfoodtomeettheirbasicenergyneeds.Hundredsofmillionsmoreareaffectedbyseasonalorotherformsoftransitoryfoodinsecurity,andwelloverhalfthepopulationofdevelopingcountriesregularlyfailtoconsumeanadequateamountandmixoffoodssufficienttomeettheirtotalnutrientneeds.
Theimpactofthisdeprivationisoftendevastating-notonlyformalnourishedindividualsandhouseholds,butalsofortheircommunitiesand,often,forentirenationsandregionswhomustcopewithanimmeasurablelossofhumancapitalandpotential.
“Oneofthekeystodealingeffectivelywithpovertyistorecognizethatwidespreadhungerandmalnutritionareboththeresultoffailedsocialandeconomicdevelopments.Societiesbesetbyhungerandunder-nutritionareusuallypoorandoftenremainpoor,andbreakingthiscycleofpovertyandpoornutritionisimperative,ifpoornationshopetoclimbuptheladderofsocialandeconomicdevelopment,”saidProfessorClay.
Thelectureisdesignedtoempowerindividualstomakeadifferenceintheircommunitiesandaroundtheworld.Participantswilllearnabouttheextentandseverityofworldwidehungerandmalnutrition,andexplorethecausesandconsequencesoftheseproblems,includinglookingintothesocial,economic,political,agricultural,andenvironmentalaspectsofpovertyandhunger.Participantswillalsoponderhowtheseproblemscanbebestaddressed.

Mondaynight’seventhonored14African-AmericanindividualswhohavemadesignificantcontributionsinLeonandsurroundingcounties.
TheCollege’sofficialBlackHistoryMonthcelebration,however,runsthroughoutthemonthofFebruaryandwillincludeaseriesofeventsopentoTCCstudents,facultyandstaff,aswellastheTallahasseecommunity.

Green Guide course begins Feb. 12Tallahassee Community College’sWakullaCenterwillofferaGreenGuideCertificationcoursebeginningTuesday,Feb.12.TheWakullaCenterisatCrawfordville’sCentennialBankbuilding,locatedat2932CrawfordvilleHighway.
The90-hourcourseisdesignedforindividualswhoareinterestedinstartinganature-basedbusiness,findingemploymentinanature-basedfield,andforthosewhosimplywishtolearnmoreabouttheBigBendRegion’snaturalenvironment.
Theclasswillmeettwoeveningsperweek,primarilyonTuesdayandThursday,forclassroomstudiesandagainonSaturdayforafieldtrip.AsamplingofGreenGuidecertificationclassesincludesnorthFloridatrees,geologicalfeatures,mammalsandreptiles,andbusinessbasics.
Fieldtripswillexploretopicssuchasbirdingandsealife,naturephotography,historyandkayaking.Thecostofthecourseis$320perpersonandincludesallclassmeetingsandfieldtrips.Individualclassesare$20perperson,andindividualfieldtripsare$40perperson.

TCC host Model United Nations conferenceThisisaninvitationtothemiddleandhighschoolstudentsintheTallahasseeandsurroundingareastoparticipateinauniquehands-onlearningexperiencecalledModelUnitedNations(MUN).EveryyearTallahassee Community College(TCC)hostsaModelUnitedNationsconferenceformiddleandhighschoolstudentsheldattheCapitolbuilding,calledTallahasseeSouthernModelUnitedNations(TSMUN).
ModelUnitedNationsisasimulationoftherealUnitedNations(UN)wherestudentsrepresentdifferentcountriesfromaroundtheworld,cometogethertodebateforeignpolitics,andfindsolutionstorealworldproblemssuchasNuclearEnergy,PovertyandSustainableDevelopment.Forthepast16years,TSMUNhasprovidedanengagingeducationalexperiencetotheSoutheast,whileraisingawarenessofinternationalissuesforhighschoolandmiddleschoolstudents.Thisyear,ourconferencewillbeheldonFeb.15,attheCapitolwithover15schoolsattending.

Students get early look at college lifeSEAN ROSSMANAyounger,differentgroupofstudentsfiledintoclassroomsatTallahassee Community CollegeonThursday.
ThemiddleandhighschoolstudentsfromGadsden,WakullaandLeoncountiesweretheretolookaheadatwhatcollegeholdsforthem.
AspartofTCC’sBlackHistoryMonthcelebration,theschoolinvited200middleandhighschoolstudents.
ThestudentspackedintoclassroomstohearfromTCCcollegeprofessorsandstudentsonthecareerchoicesavailabletothem.Thestudentswerepickedbecausetheyareonapathtowardbeingfirst-generationcollegestudents,saidShawanaElwood,aprogramspecialistatEducationTalentSearchatTCCandorganizeroftheevent.
“Thekidsgettoseethestudentsthatactuallyattendhere,”Elwoodsaid.
“Theyalsohaveanopportunitytoshareintheexperiencewiththeprofessoraswell,”saidElwood,whospearheadedthisyear’sevent.
Thegoalwastohighlighttheimportanceofeducation.
Thestudentsgotahands-oncollegeexperience,withprofessorsandstudentsengagingthemonmath,science,nutrition,Englishandmanufacturing.
TCCheldaYouthDaytwoyearsago,butElwoodwantedtomakethisyearmoreinteractive.
“Idecided—whenIdecidedtobeapartofthiscommunity—thatweshouldbringsomethingfortheyouthtododuringBlackHistoryMonth,andletthemknowthattheyareimportant,”saidElwood.
Elwoodalreadyknewtherewerestudentsouttherewhowouldbenefitfromasneakpeek.ThroughherinvolvementwithEducationTalentSearch,whichmentorsandsteershighschoolstudentstowardcollege,sheteamedupwithFloridaGear-UpandtheCollegeReach-Outprogramtoputontheevent.
“Whatwearedoingisjustengagingthemincollege,lettingthemknowthatcollegeisagreatopportunity,it’ssomethingforthemtoconsider,”saidAdiaBlaize,presidentofTCC’sStudentGovernmentAssociation.
Blaizedeliveredaseminaronleadership,whereshefoundanengagedaudience.
“Mostofthemwanttodosomethingwithcomputertechnology,”saidBlaizeofthestudent’scareergoals.
“We’relettingthemknowthatcollegeisreal,it’scoming,it’snext.”

There’sanewfeelandenergysurroundingtheTallahassee Community Collegebaseballteam.
VeterancoachMikeMcLeod,inhis23rdseason,hasplentyofexperienceandpitchingdepth,akeycombinationonanylevelbutespeciallyattwo-yearprograms.
Thosestrengthshavebeenfeaturedearlythisseason.TheEaglesare8-1headingintosecond-dayactionoftheTCCDiamondClassicatEagleField.Thethree-dayeventalsofeaturesGordonStateCollegeandCentralAlabamaCommunityCollege.
FormerLeonHighleft-handerNickDeckert(2-0),oneoffourlocalplayersontheroster,wasthescheduledstarterinThursday’sopeninggame.
McLeodcanalsoseethedifferencesaroundhimfollowing$150,000infieldandclubhouserenovations.
Theinfieldhasbeenrebuilt,SportsTurfwasinstalledinfoulterritoryandinthebullpens,paddingwasreplacedbehindhomeplateandalongdugoutrailings,andnettingintheindoorbattingcageswasupgraded.
Thepiecesappearinplaceforaprogramdeterminedtoreachthestatetournamentforthefirsttimesince2009,whenitadvancedasPanhandleConferencechampions.
“Wehaveagoodfeelingandthere’salotofenergy,”McLeodsaid.
“Thecoachesareexcited,theplayersareexcited.Butwealsotemperthatandwehavetobecauseweknowwhatthisconferenceisallabout.”
WhiletheEaglesdon’topenconferenceplayuntilmid-March,theycertainlyunderstandtheimportanceofplayingwellandgainingmomentum.Thebullpenisofftoastrongstartandtheteamhasregisteredfourcomebackwins.Lastyear’steam(32-19)alsoshowedplentyofpotentialbeforeitwasslowedbyinconsistencyandinjuriesinconferenceplay.
“Wehaveaveteranpitchingstaffandaveteranlineup,”saidDeckert,asophomoreandoneofsevenleft-handedpitchers.
“Wehavealotofexperiencewhichwehopecorrelateswith(conference)winsintheseason.Lastyear,Ididn’tknowwhattoexpectwhenIwentintosomeofmystarts.ThisyearI’vegainedalotofconfidence,sonowIknowhowtotakecareofmyselfandhowtothrowtobattersandkeepthemoffbalance.”
FormerNorthFloridaChristianstarandFloridaStatecommitmentNickGraganellaanchorsastartinglineupthatcanfeatureeightsophomores.FormerLeonHighcatcherTylerYorkhassplittimebehindtheplateandatfirstbase.
