The Strand & Upper High St

1. Sandford Park Alehouse CAMRA’s National Pub of the Year 2015, with a great selection of ales and beers from all over the world. Welcoming atmosphere and good beer garden, or inside why not try your hand at billiards!

2. The Swan A large pub hosting some great live music. Tucked away sofas, a pretty conservatory and enormous picnic tables in the outdoor area to the rear. Shush Bar open ‘til 2am Fri-Sat for soulful beats.

3. The Strand Open plan, large tables, great atmosphere. Outdoor area to rear. Regular events include music, comedy and craft beer evenings.

4. The Vine Small, charming pub, serving authentic Thai food that is to die for. One for fans of twinkly lights.

5. Old Restoration The oldest pub in Cheltenham (open since 1661) has a maze-like, well worn interior with a friendly atmosphere. Darts. Quiz nights.

6. The Spectre A large, no-frills pub offering a range of good food and drinks deals. Ideal for sports with a hefty supply of large TV screens.

7. Lounge72 This bar looks tiny but a few stairs takes you to a large sports bar with eight American pool tables. Toss a coin to Beat the Barman and win your round again. Open ‘til 3am.

8. Bentleys Lounge-style bar. Bags of space at the back of the venue with large, alcove seating. Open until 4am for late-night dwellers.

9. The Grape EscapeExpect enthusiastic, friendly and knowledgeable service in this dedicated wine bar/merchants. Selection of wines by the glass changing weekly. Light nibbles available.

10. The Apartment Sleek, chic, champagne/cocktail bar with a wide selection of classic and trendy cocktails and premium spirits.

11. Bierkeller German themed chain. Sticky floors, a rowdy atmosphere and massive jugs. Jugs of beer, that is. Don’t miss the Bavarian bands.

12. Moon Under Water A J D Wetherspoons establishment. Does what it says on the tin, with a pleasant outdoor area to the rear.

13. Wild Beer at Jessop House Vast array of artisan beers that are always changing and sold in 1/3 pints. Regular tasting evenings. Cosy group seating upstairs plus outdoor courtyard. Don’t miss.

14. Tailors A favourite with many; handsome, ivy-clad Tailors is always busy whatever time of day. People-watch from the outdoor courtyard or watch sports in the cosy yet modern interior.

15. Beaufort Arms Not strictly in the same area as the pubs named above, this is a traditional inn well worth a visit if you’re down this end of town. Recently refurbished with pool, darts and a skittle alley.

Town Centre

16. Copa Modern, spacious and family friendly venue, serving good food all day. The large seating area to the front is people-watching heaven.

17. Whittle Taps Once the Slug and Lettuce, now a trendy bar serving craft beers and some great comfort food within a quirky industrial interior.

18. Six Degrees of Separation With the gloriously intimate feel of being in someone’s house, this handsome venue serves cocktails, craft beers and pizza.

19. Coco Basement club/bar, with the emphasis on BASS, open weekends only. Late night venue with free entry.

20. 21 Club Basement club and late night venue (Thu-Sun) with free entry. Don’t miss the surprise covered and heated courtyard bar at the back!

21. AquaVitae Relaxed, contemporary venue serving bespoke cocktails and tapas style food, with the emphasis on sharing.

22. Lily Gins High-class Victorian style cocktail bar with a loud, wicked side. Hosts live music on the first Sunday of the month.

23. Fever Happy, unpretentious club spinning cheesy tunes with a light-up dancefoor. Their motto? If you can’t sing it, we won’t play it.

24. MooMoo Club popular with Cheltenham’s younger revellers. Large venue spread across three rooms, each with a different beat.

25. Prom Vaults Down-to-earth, feel-good basement party venue. Free entry, music and dancing. Usually only open Friday and Saturday.

26. Yates No-frills, large chain venue offering good food deals in the day and plenty of music and dancing on Friday/Saturday evenings.

27. The Clarence Social Opened in 2016 and proving popular. Sophisticated, quirky Regency interior serving high-class cocktails. Can you find its secret bar?

28. Revolution Used to be a church but the only thing you’ll be worshipping is their renowned vodka strips. Spacious and lofty, it serves great comfort food and attracts a young party crowd at weekends.

29. The Bank House J D Wetherspoons, with a brighter interior than no.12. Decent, well priced pub grub and a good variety of beers.

30. Turtle Bay Carribean themed chain – big on flavours, big on decor! Foremost a restaurant but holds its own if it’s cocktails you’re after.

31. The Cotswold Inn One of few traditional pubs in the town centre. The Cotswold has a friendly atmosphere and plenty going on – live music every weekend, plus open mic, quiz and Karaoke nights.

The Brewery Quarter & Lower High St

32. 2 Pigs Down ‘n’ dirty rock club, loads of fun. Also one of Cheltenham’s best live music venues, giving opportunities for young bands.

33. Smokey Joe’s 50’s Americana themed diner, this gorgeously quirky venue serves shakes, pancakes and more recently bottled beers, wine and cocktails. Don’t miss.

34. Cosy Club Brand-spanking new (Feb ‘17), this chain restaurant/bar prides

itself on being fabulously eccentric. Enjoy your cocktail in eclectic

surroundings – even the staff are dressed the part.

35. Brewhouse and Kitchen With its own microbrewery on-site, this new venue offers a huge variety of beers in gorgeous industrial style surroundings. There’s plenty more on offer though if beer’s not your thing.

36. Babel Bar Coming soon to The Brewery Quarter, this promises to be one for ‘fans of cocktails and finery’, while the atmosphere is kept buzzing with a varied mix of music until late.

37. Coast to Coast Coming soon to The Brewery Quarter. American saloon restaurant/bar chain. Press suggests we can look forward to happy hours and seriously good burgers.

38. Frog and Fiddle Large, cheery venue popular with students and focused on live music. No food but they’re happy for you to take your own! Loads of screens for watching live sports.

39. The Shamrock Basic locals haunt, this is Cheltenham’s only Irish pub. Large covered seating area to the rear.

40. The Coconut Tree This is a real find. Tucked away and totally unexpected, experience authentic Sri-Lankan street-style food in this newly opened bar.

St James

41. The Railway Hidden away, traditional style pub specialising in sausage (thirteen types no less, served with flavoured mashes). The beer garden is one of Cheltenham’s hidden gems in the summer.

42. The Bottle of Sauce Bar/restaurant opened in 2016. Think exposed brick and of-the-moment. Ping pong/table football in the games room, anyone?

43. St George’s Vaults Traditional pub but with a 50’s vibe, hidden in the popular St James area. Popular for its jukebox which gets pretty loud. Also boasts an attractive ‘secret’ courtyard garden to rear.

44. Boston Tea Party Start the day with brunch in this bright, airy and trendy cafe. Also serves craft beers, cider, wine and a few spirits. Open ‘til 9pm.

45. The Stable Trendy indie-chain restaurant/bar specialising in cider, pies and pizza – what’s not to like! Live music at weekends.

For a pleasant fifteen minute walk into the town centre, stroll down the Honeybourne Line cycle/footpath. You can also make use of the D and E buses which run approximately every ten minutes.

46. Chelsea Bar and Brasserie Primarily a restaurant though the bar is separate. Classy ambience

perfect for enjoying a classic cocktail. Jazz Night on Monday.

47. Firestation Housed in the old fire station built in 1906, this is a lofty new-

meets-old venue serving flame grilled food in good-looking

surroundings.

48. The Bayshill Traditional, friendly wood-panelled pub just outside of the town

centre. Plenty on offer with darts, pool, food and a beer garden.

49. The Tavern Probably the first of the recent swathe of design-led bars to open

locally. Scrummy food. Spins funky tunes ‘til late on Fri-Sat.

50. Thirteen Degrees Pretty decent club – it’s not overly trendy but not cheesy either.

Three floors, five bars.

The Promenade & Montpellier

51. Under The Prom Basement club spread across three different rooms. Attracts a

young crowd for music and dancing. Free entry.

52. Subtone For a long time, Cheltenham’s go-to late night club. At the time

of writing Subtone is being scaled down from three/four floors

into a smaller intimate basement venue.

53. Imperial Garden Bar During the summer months, scores of locals can be found here

soaking up the sun with a cold beer. When there’s live music

(usually Sundays) it doesn’t get much better.

54. Crazy Eights/131 The Prom Made up of hotel/restaurant 131 The Prom upstairs, and trendy

bar Crazy Eights downstairs. Frequented mainly by well-heeled

and good-looking Cheltonians.

80. Hotel Du Vin Hotel Bar Think dark wood, leather chairs and classic styling for Hotel Du Vin’s Bistro bar.

81. Monty’s Cocktail Bar Cocktail bar separate from its sister hotel The George above, attracts a posh crowd. Usually only open Fri-Sat with live music and light bites.

Gloucester Road

82. The Midland The Midland is across the road from the train station, so is popular during raceweek. Large, traditional ‘pub with rooms’, complete with cosy Victorian snug and new ‘Cosmopolitan’ bar.

83. TaproomLocated onsite at the newly launched Deya Brewing Company, the Taproom sells its intense, hop-forward ales every Friday 4-9. Check their website for weekend openings and live music.

84. The Kings Arms Traditional locals pub which has recently been subject to a smart makeover. Live sports, pool and darts. Courtyard to rear.

85. Adam & Eve Mid-terraced local off the beaten track. Recently refurbished. Pool, skittles, darts and live sports.

Pittville & Fairview

86. The Feathered Fish Relaxed, contemporary bar serving food, wine and real ales. Stylish interior with outdoor seating to the rear. Seriously good value Sunday lunch. Great location for the racecourse.

87. Sudeley Arms Simple local’s pub a few minutes walks from Whaddon Road, home of Cheltenham Town FC. Serves no-nonsense British food with a cracking Sunday lunch. Darts and quiz machines.

88. The Kemble Brewery Inn Hidden, intimate locals pub. Small and old-school, this proper pub is really lovely and the locals are welcoming.

55. Queens Hotel The Queen’s classic hotel bar is open to the public and specialises in gin. The restaurant also boasts a hidden champagne garden accessed through a small pathway left of the main entrance.

56. Circus Bar Considering you’re in Montpellier, the beer is surprisingly cheap. Relaxed environment with large windows perfect for people watching. Closed Mondays.

57. John Gordons Independent saloon style bar and shop, serving up a huge selection of wines and spirits from across the globe. Watch the world go by from the courtyard or hide away in the dark and casual basement.

58. All Bar One Contemporary, airy and fairly upmarket chain. Ample seating for large groups and pleasant people-watching outdoor space at the front. Food a step-up from the usual pub grub.

59. Harry Cooks Large, lively venue, always busy especially at weekends. Food served all day. Regular live music. Great for a relaxing few beers with friends.

60. Rotunda Tavern Long-standing wood-panelled local. As a proper pub in the heart of Montpellier, it’s a world away from its trendy counterparts.

61. Montpellier Wine Bar Iconic bar which features in many a Cheltenham painting. Has been a favourite among locals for decades. Restaurant downstairs and wine bar upstairs plus seating outside. Gets busy!

62. Soho Bar Sleek, modern cocktail venue and eatery with a small dancefloor, occasional live music and friendly staff. Champagne bar upstairs.

Leckhampton & Bath Road

63. The Bath Tavern Tiny local pub offering a friendly atmosphere and good live music. At the time of printing they also serve up free food on a regular basis! Next door to The Bell, this begins the Leckhampton/Bath Road run.

64. The Bell Inn Long, narrow, traditional pub serving decent food and Sunday carvery

alongside a real fire. Next door to The Bath Tavern, you can’t visit one

without the other.

65. Morans Restaurant with a popular wine bar to the side. The restaurant is

smart, the bar is rustic meets modern. A great place for a relaxed drink

or two. Gets pretty busy. Outdoor seating area to front.

66. The Exmouth Arms Hot contender for the best beer garden in town for those summer

evenings. Family-friendly, spacious indoors and out with plenty of

seating for larger groups. Friendly, relaxed atmosphere.

67. Five Alls Locals pub with regular live music, sports, darts, open mic nights and

Karaoke. Feel-good and cheery. Recently refurbished with a small

outdoor seating area to the rear.

68. Sup and Chow Recently refurbished and renamed in 2016. Tardis-like proportions

inside, with a traditional bar at the front and large, simple and open

areas behind. Family friendly with a selection of games and toys!

69. Norwood Arms Huge, family-friendly pub with an equally large beer garden. The start

(or is it end?) of the famous Leckhampton/Bath Road run.

The Suffolks

70. The Beehive A hidden Cheltenham classic. Friendly and hugely popular with locals

as well as race goers. Good variety of beers and decent outdoor

seating to rear. Styles itself as a ‘country pub in town’. A must-visit.

71. The Retreat Stylish yet unpretentious bar that’s famous for its fun atmosphere and

varied crowd – a firm Cheltenham favourite. Outdoor courtyard to

the rear. Food at lunchtime only and closed Sundays.

72. The Daffodil Cheltenham’s old cinema retains the styling of its 1920’s heyday.

Foremost a restaurant, it boasts a separate champagne bar

overlooking the diners below.

73. Bar 50 An intimate bar offering premium brand spirits, extensive range of

cocktails, quality wines and bottled beers. Found in the upmarket

Suffolks area, which feels a world away from the town centre. 

74. Suffolk Arms Proper British pub located on Suffolk Road with a warm atmosphere.

Authentic Thai food as well as a British menu, the food wins rave

reviews. Regular live music. Oh, and there’s a ghost in the cellar…

Tivoli

75. The Jolly Brewmaster Its crown as local CAMRA pub of year was taken in 2013. Still fantastic

for real ales and ciders – this traditional pub boasts a superb beer

garden perfect for the summer months.

76. The Tivoli Smart, stylish and food-focused, The Tivoli features a pleasant

courtyard for sunnier days.

77. The Royal Union A ‘proper’, traditional pub hidden within the side streets of Tivoli.

A firm CAMRA favourite and home of Tivoli Beer Co, The Royal Union

offers 7 real ales and 6+ craft beers; ALL brewed in Gloucestershire.

Lansdown

78. Lansdown Large indoors and out – great for a drink on sunnier days. Busy for big

sporting events due to its plentiful supply of large screen TVs.

79. Malbar Malmaison’s hotel bar is open to the public and has a lively, high-

class ambience where the cocktails and champagne flow.

The Strand & Upper High StThe area of the High Street known locally as The Strand is home

to an eclectic mix. Expect mainstream bars, havens for beer lovers,

a dedicated wine bar and modern pubs serving excellent food.

Whatever you’re after you’ll find it here – and if you like them all

it’s great for bar hopping!

Town CentreAs you can imagine, the town centre houses some popular

mainstream bars and gets very busy whatever time of day. Venture

further down increasingly popular Regent Street for some quirky

highlights plus a number of clubs catering to various tastes. New

venues seem to open frequently, and at the time of writing there are

plans to convert the rear of the Regent’s Arcade into restaurant and

retail space, so make sure to keep your eyes open for new venues.

The Brewery Quarter & Lower High StFollowing a huge facelift, the Brewery Quarter now merges into the

Lower High St. With more restaurants and bars scheduled to open

in the coming months, it’s a no-brainer for pre-cinema/bowling

eats and drinks. It’s not all about the Brewery though – there’s some

great music venues to be found in the Lower High Street, while the

Coconut Tree (once the St Paul’s Tavern) is a must-visit.

St JamesThis area has seen somewhat of an explosion in the last couple

of years. Starting with the opening of The Tavern, followed by

The Stable, The Firestation and The Bottle of Sauce, its pubs sit

well alongside The Wilson Art Gallery to make a trendy, young

neighbourhood. Make no mistake though, it’s also got some

cracking traditional pubs that shouldn’t go unnoticed.

The Promenade & MontpellierThink grand Regency buildings, courtyard drinks and independent

shops, Montpellier is the Cheltenham you’ll see on the telly. Not only

that, it boasts two beautiful parks playing host to various festivals

throughout the year, plus an open-air bar in the summer (no.53).

Bath Road & LeckhamptonBath Road leads into Leckhampton (effectively a separate town in

its own right) and features a wide selection of pubs: winebars, locals

and large family friendly venues. If you’re heading up from the High

Street, start at the Bath Tavern and experience the classic seven-pub

crawl that is the Bath Road run.

The SuffolksTucked away off the beaten track, The Suffolks offers a selection

of upmarket, independent shops and the bars here are some of

Cheltenham’s hidden gems, not to be missed. Also home to The

Champignon Sauvage (two Michelin-starred restaurant).

TivoliWith a similar upmarket ‘village’ feel to the Suffolks, Tivoli is

mainly a residential area, though the few bars and pubs it has

are well worth a visit, particularly for real ale fans.

LansdownMainly residential area, featuring sports favourite Lansdown at

one end and a selection of classy hotel bars at the other.

Gloucester RoadGloucester Road takes you from the train station to the Lower

High Street, featuring a number of watering holes on the way.

Pittville & FairviewHeading north from the Town Centre you’ll still find a few bars

dotted around, if you know where to look. A great base for

starting your day at the races. Pittville Park & Pump Rooms is a

must-visit.

We love Cheltenham!It’s a town with a lot to offer, including a fantastic collection of pubs and bars – whatever your taste may be.

With an explosion of new drinking establishments opening in

recent years it’s been a challenge to keep up. To help you out,

we at Maple Rock Design have put together this handy guide.

The guide includes the newcomers, the old timers, the lively,

the traditional and the family friendly. Pubs, wine bars, beer

gardens and cocktail bars all within a 10-15 minute walk from

the Town Centre*. Take your pick!

We’ve separated these into geographical areas which we hope

will serve as a guide to your perfect night out, whatever part of

Cheltenham you’re visiting. Well, no one could do them ALL,

could they?!

*Working within a 3km radius of Royal Well, we’ve tried to include

all of what we see as Cheltenham’s drinking establishments.

We have, however, found this to be a bit of a grey area, with many

lovely restaurants, cafes and hotels that could potentially fit within

this bracket. We’ve therefore narrowed it down to places that we feel

are used to opening their doors to those just after a drink. We’ve also

not included social clubs and those with membership requirements.
