Bulky collectionsCheltenham Borough Council offers a special collection service for domestic items that do not fit into a standard wheeled bin or dustbin, or weigh more than 25kg. There is a charge for this service with the charge based upon the number of units collected. Bulky items are classified according to their weight and size. A unit is approximately equivalent to a washing machine or a two seater sofa. Fridges and freezers are also collected as part of this service.

The collection address must be within Cheltenham.

For further information about the collection service, please visit www.cheltenham.gov.uk or telephone 01242 264244.

Frequently asked questionsQ: I live in a flat and do not have much room for extra containers, how can I store them? A: There are alternatives available if you do not currently have space for a recycling box. If this affects you, please contact your housing provider as we may already be working with them, or alternatively contact the council on 01242 264244.

Q: Can I have an extra green recycling box? A: Yes, to order one please phone 01242 264244.

Q: Can I take recycling and waste to Wingmoor Farm and Hempsted household recycling centres? A: Yes, Gloucestershire County Council operated recycling centres will take the extra recycling. Excess waste that does not fit into your green refuse bin may also be taken.

Q: How do I keep my green recycling box clean? A: Swill dirty boxes out with disinfectant or bicarbonate of soda after they have been emptied. You should rinse containers where appropriate.

Q: How will I know which box is mine after collection? A: Please put your house name or number on your box so it can be easily identified.

Q: What happens to the materials that I put in my green recycling box?

Glass Sent to a reprocessor in Yorkshire where it is sorted and crushed. After being cleaned it is made into new glass products such as bottles and jars.

Plastic bottles Sent to a reprocessor in Leicestershire. The recycled material is then used in the making of new plastic products such as underground pipes for gas/water, waste wheelie bins and recycling bins.

Paper Sent to a paper mill in Kings Lynn where it is converted to paper for the making of newspapers and magazines.

Kitchen card/cardboard This is made into half tonne bales and sent to any one of a number of mills, where it is pulped and used to make new cardboard boxes.
