President’s Report South Australia has a long and proud history in Table Tennis that includes being the first state in Australia to establish a Table Tennis Association in 1923, producing numerous Australian Champions, international representatives (including Olympics Games) as well as hosting numerous national and international events. This is something which the Table Tennis community can be proud of – with all of these achievements being administered through a volunteer resourced organisation. In the current climate TTSA faces new modern-day challenges and requires a mindset which both protects and enhances the health of Table Tennis in South Australia. While policy and legislative requirements are high on the agenda, as is communicating via the internet and social media, attracting players to the sport remains the key challenge. In an era of competing leisure activities, encouraging the community to engage in a healthy lifestyle is a challenge for all sports. Table Tennis is very much an activity enjoyed by the community at large, generally as a silent unacknowledged activity played in the comfort of the home, the gymnasiums of the school environment, lunch time table in the work environment or social activity at the local community centre. TTSA is excited about the opportunities which exist within the community to bring Table Tennis out of the shadows. Notwithstanding these challenges:

• We continue to build and enhance our player and coach pathways with the introduction of our Smash Hits program with an expanded program across north and south Adelaide

• The feedback from our revamped Winter Pennant finals program ‘Super Saturday’ continues to be extremely positive with 76 teams entered in the Winter Competition across 10 divisions (including Smash Hits) equating to over ~300 participating on a weekly basis

• We co-ordinated the Country Carnival and held a successful event in Murry Bridge – numbers continue to improve as does the standard

• Our player pathway programs continue to provide opportunities for our players to progress through the ranks with the High Performance (Para and Able bodied), Development and Emerging Athletes squads and I thank all those people involved in the programs

• Our results at National events continue to be exceptional and we continue to ‘bat well above our average’

• Our state veteran’s players continue to exceed expectations with a material number of medals, rankings and best ever personal performances in an ever-increasing high standard of play with over 400 players from over 6 different countries competing.…. the veteran’s scene continues to grow with new players representing the state and performing exceptionally well

• From a governance perspective we continue to evolve our governance practices and frameworks to support the sport in SA as well as all of our internal and external stakeholders.

In October 2018 Ms Ann Percy (Executive Director) was recognised as Volunteer of the Year with Table Tennis Australia – a well-deserved recognition. TTSA has identified its key priorities as part of its strategic plan, these priorities aid the Board

in its decision-making process and include:

• Governance - Build and enhance industry standard governance practices throughout the Table Tennis community

• Develop - Build infrastructure that assists the Table Tennis community in delivering outcomes

• Community - Encourage and foster community participation

Page 8: Table Tennis South Australia · 2020. 6. 20. · Page 4 of 48 2018 Strategic Focus Areas Vision A growing, vibrant South Australian Table Tennis Community Purpose To foster participation

• Continuous Improvement – Strive to achieve excellence in all things undertaken. Overlaying these strategic priorities is our responsibilities as directors in relation to fiscal management. TTSA is acutely aware of the sensitivities attached to this responsibility at the grassroots level as well as the National level and are working hard to ensure there is an appropriate balance between the two stakeholders – this will continue to be a challenge for the us and the sport in 2019. As a state body, we need to ensure that we have a sustainable sport for future generations. In closing, I would like to thank the Board of TTSA, all of the volunteers and the affiliates for their support throughout the year. Paul Langley GAICD OLY President/High Performance

Membership Sports Vouchers is a Government of South Australia initiative for primary school age children from Reception to Year 7 to receive a $100 discount from sport or dance membership fees.

The new Liberal Government has increased the amount from $50 to $100 commencing the 1st January 2019.

Sports Vouchers is an initiative that all our clubs and associations should embrace to either subsidize or to cover junior membership fees, thus making junior fees affordable to parents. This initiative can help in increasing the junior membership of our Clubs. The task of processing the vouchers to obtain the value of the voucher is an online process and relatively easy. Please contact myself should you require assistance in this process.

The Sporting Schools Programme is a Federal Government funded initiative that commenced in July 2015. The program brings together schools and sports with the goal of getting primary school children involved in sport and their communities. The experience of TTSA is that the programme is successful in introducing table tennis to school children and our coaches are well received within the schools, however, it is very difficult to transition children participating in the programme at schools to a local table tennis club. Despite this difficulty it is still very important for Clubs and Associations to participate in this programme if they have accredited coaches willing to work within schools. Table Tennis SA has been using the Ratings Central system since the commencement of the 2016 Winter Pennant Season. All sanctioned tournaments, state tournament results and TTSA Winter Pennant results are submitted to the Ratings Central website for the purpose of calculation of the player ratings. Many affiliates use the Ratings Central and some such as the Mount Gambier Association have been using the system for many years. Ratings Central has proven to be a very accurate and popular system and is now used throughout Australia and many Countries throughout the world. For those Clubs or Associations that are not using the system and would like some help on how to use the system please contact myself. revolutioniseSPORT is an online cloud-based platform for sports management, including membership and finances, competition management, governance tools, and more. I have been trialling the competitions module of this system for the TTSA Winter Pennant Competition during the 2018 season. The system allows online entering of results via a smart phone or tablet with results automatically updating the premiership tables for each division and also the corresponding player rankings table. . Country The Country Carnival Tournament for 2018 returned to its traditional June long weekend time slot in which we saw a decline in numbers from 79 to 69 competitors. With this decline in numbers a vote was held by Country Representatives to move the 2019 Tournament into July. 12 tables were required to ensure matches being completed in good time. Participants again from Port Lincoln, Whyalla, Copper Coast, Barossa and Light, Riverland, Murray Bridge, Great Southern and Mount Gambier enjoyed the full weekend of competition. Congratulations to all involved. A wrap up of the Regional clubs showed numbers consistent across the board but again junior participation on the low. 3 Country Juniors represented the State in the National Juniors in Townsville. Congratulations to Joseph Harris, Anuska Mudalige and Nathan Fong. 2018 Saturday Individual Rankings Mens A Grade 1 Gary McDougall 2 Chris Gorman Jnr 3 Des Short 4 Dennis Robinson 5 Greg Megaw 6 Josh Jantosh 7 Anuska Mudalige 8 Ben Newman 9 Ian Morris 10 Nigel Stoeckel Womens A Grade 1 Laurette Norton 2 Tamara Attrill 3 Serena Fong 4 Sally Kunze 5 Heather Richards

Event Management The year 2018 has been a quieter year for South Australia, with no Nationals having been conducted during the season however this year, 2019, Adelaide will be the host for the Australian National Veterans TT Championships. Finding a venue to cater for 450 players has been a problem, but we have found the St. Claire’s Sports Centre, at Woodville and it is ideal for the large numbers. It is a newly built Centre with six basketball courts and will be great for this event. TTA has new members on the Board and they have introduced new ideas on the structure of running the sport in Australia. They have taken on the organizing of the Nationals, Para, Junior, Open/Youth, Veterans, with National dates being altered for the year. The Para Nationals is being held in Murray Bridge, in early February, with volunteers from that Affiliated Association assisting TTSA and TTA. In preparing the Calendar for 2019, it has been a challenge, as tournaments need to fit into the calendar where the dates need to be some weeks before the National, so that State Selectors have some tournament results to select teams from. This year, the Australian Junior Championships will be held from 7-13 July in Wollongong. NSW, the Australian Open /Youth Championships from 8-13 April, Latrobe Churchill, Vic., and Australian Veterans Championships on 12-19 October, Woodville. However, SA will be the host for the Australian Masters Games, the week before the Australian Veterans Championships in October, giving the volunteers only a few days after to set up equipment for the Veterans. The Regional Masters Games will be held in Port Pirie from 5-14th April. A tournament sub-committee met in early 2018 and came up with some ideas that would possibly improve the timing and organizing on the day. Some changes were not accepted too well by the players and there has been a 2019 meeting to change some of the ideas. Some of the Clubs have their own regular people who run the tournaments and we hope that other people will show some interest. I wish to thank Greg Bungey, Maurice Quinn, Richard Grant, Audrey Swanbury, Paton Wilson, and Paul Langley, Denise Tiller, Marilyn Dixon, Lenore Roder for contributing to the organising of the days and volunteering their time. Social Media 2018 was my first year as a Director of TTSA and it has been a rewarding year. My contribution as a Director has centered around consideration and analysis of typical operational matters including (but not limited to):

• policy review and creation

• event planning

• Table Tennis Australia collaboration and communication review and

• financial considerations. A significant undertaking of mine this year was the investigation of how social media may be used by TTSA given our key parameters (purpose, target audience and financial constraints). A range of platforms were considered and investigated including Facebook, Twitter, TeamApp, Youtube and others. Findings of the investigation were compiled into a report and presented to my fellow Directors with recommendations, justified by the information collated, provided. Having this year attained a greater understanding and appreciation of the role of the TTSA Board and my role as a Director on it, I look forward to increasing my contribution to the sport of Table Tennis in 2019. A key focus of mine will be increasing our presence and community engagement in social media. Geoffrey Langhans Director

Marketing This year my efforts have continued to be focused on the regular edition of the Table Talk Newsletter, which we feel is vitally important to keep the table tennis community up to date with news from the TTSA Board, major events and also the news from associations, clubs and players. The distribution list of the Newsletter continues to grow, as more players are added to the mailing list, and more people pass it onto other members, friends and family that may have an interest in our sport. Our hope is that it will continue to strengthen bonds within the table tennis community, as well as become an attraction to non-players, who may be looking for a sport to play or simply want to become part of a great community. The TTSA Facebook page continues to go from strength to strength, with well over 1100 people linked directly to our page, which means not only do all of these people get to see our news, but every single one of their friends will also see it when they ‘like’ one of our posts. We should not underestimate the value of these friendships, as it can be daunting for new players to enter our sport, but knowing just a single person within the community that they can talk to, and who can introduce them to other members, can make all the difference to (1) bring a new member into our sport, and (2) retain this member as they build friendships with other members. There are many other ways to promote and grow our sport in SA, but unfortunately a severe shortage of volunteers continues to limit how much work TTSA and the clubs can do. I continue to be amazed by how much work is done by just a few key members in each club. I think it’s very important to show these people our appreciation, and if possible offer a little help when the opportunity arises. There are many other areas that TTSA is considering to promote and grow our sport, as well as provide clubs with further resources to do the same. As we attempt to improve communication with all the clubs and communities involved in table tennis, we hope to receive more feedback from members and players as well. We have many good people in table tennis that volunteer a great deal of their time for the love of the sport. If we can establish better communication with these people, and try to work together for our common cause, I’m sure the future of our sport will look much brighter! Unfortunately this will be my last year as Marketing Director for TTSA, and least for now. Work and family takes up too much of my time, and with the little spare time I do have, I don’t feel I can do justice to the position, so I’m hoping someone with more free time on their hand, can take over the position. We have a great many opportunities that lie ahead of us to grow and promote our sport, and I’m confident we can continue to take advantage of these to further our great sport. Sport Development Primary Schools 4 A Side Tournament

Entries:

17 Boys and 4 Girls entries received. Girls: Tanunda (2), St Johns and Domino Servite Boys: Paringa Park (2), St Johns (2), Woodside, Domino Servite, Pembroke, Tanunda (2), Jamestown, Glenelg (3), Nurioopta (2), Lobethal and Antonio Qualifying:

The girls teams progressed direct to the finals day on Friday 24 August at Woodville TTC. The boys were split into two groups. 8 teams played at Woodville TTC and 7 at Newton TTC on Friday 17 August. 2 teams from St Johns were placed directly into the finals due to a TTSA error whereby the school downloaded the original forms before we changed the dates and as a result, they could not attend on 17 August due to a prior school commitment. The decision was made to place them into the finals directly as this was in the best interest of the players and our error. Both groups played a full round robin format and the top3 from each venue, progressed to the finals. From Woodville, Paringa Park 1, Tanunda and Antonio progressed, from Newton, Pembroke, Woodside and Domino progressed to join the two St Johns teams in an 8-team final.

Final Results:

Girls: 1st: Tanunda 1 2nd: Tanunda 2 3rd: Domino Boys: 1st: Paringa Park 2nd: Pembroke 3rd: Antonio Thanks to Cynthia Langley, Denise Tiller and Meg Marsh for assisting on the days. 2018 Primary Schools Mixed Team Competition Initially, 14 teams from 5 schools entered. Moorook (3), Cobdogla (2), St Andrews (1), Linden Park (3), St Spryidon (3) and Callington (2). Due to the small numbers, we cut out the qualifying tournaments and all 14 teams were placed in to the finals. This was based on common sense as Moorook and Cobdogla would travel to Murray Bridge to play each other when their schools are less than 5 minutes apart etc. Moorook withdrew on Thursday 17 May reducing the team numbers to 11 and a new draw and format was prepared. We placed teams into 2 Divisions. Division One had all 5 schools, number 1 teams. Division Two had the schools number 2 and 3 teams. A split of 5 and 6. Both Divisions played a round robin format, matches consisting of the best of 3, 11-point advantage games. The four singles games placed 1 v 1 ,2 v 2, 3 v 3 and 4 v 4. Then 2 doubles matches. 6 matches in all. At the completion of the round robin, division one 4th and 5th played off, the winner played the 3rd placed team. 1st and 2nd in the pool played of in the final. In Division Two, after the pool play, 1st v 2nd in the final, 3rd v 4th and 5th v 6th.

2018 Primary School Championships

Summer Smash Hit (SSH) The 2017/18 season once again went very well. We had 41 players at our Southside Hub and 38 at the Eastside with 11 weeks of play including round one of grading games. Players placed in 1 of 4 divisions to ensure even matches. Finals day well supported and fantastic 2 hours of really good table tennis. The 2018/19 season is in progress with 42 players at Eastside 38 at Southside. Adelaide Cup This was a new initiative by TTSA to bring together players from both hubs to compete for the Adelaide Cup. All players were eligible with players placed in teams of 3 playing winter pennants format of singles and doubles against players from the same divisions at each hub. This ensured even matches. 36 players entered, 18 from each hub making up 6 teams of three. After the matches were played (66) the scores were even at 33 each, a countback on games gave Southside the win, 82-78. Very well received by players and parents who filled Brighton TTC. Sporting Schools: TTA manage and deliver this program and 26 have been attended to in 2018 Summary The past 12 months has seen continued development and growth across the board in the junior levels. The new initiatives put in place over the past 1-2 seasons are continuing to be well supported as we improve our communications with in particular, the primary and secondary schools. 2019 is shaping up to be even better.

Athlete Pathways Overview Table Tennis South Australia (TTSA) identified a gap in relation to school aged children progressing from the Sporting Schools program into the junior pathways. TTSA applied for a grant as part of the 2016/17 Sport and Recreation Development and Inclusion Program. TTSA was successful in receiving a grant for the purpose of Talent ID and High-Performance Program with the project aiming to:

• develop new pathways for children to participate in Table Tennis in South Australia

• improve existing programs

• provide targeted support for talented Table Tennis athletes in South Australia to progress to state and national representation.

The objectives of the project include developing a pathway to enable participants to become active players and develop an engaging competition and development opportunities for school aged participants. The relevant elements of TTSA Strategic Plan (Continuous Improvement - Strive to Achieve Excellence in all things undertaken) include developing a sustainable pathway for all participants and maximise the impact of High-Performance athletes at National events. This will be achieved when:

• introduce a Smash Hits program that captures players from the Sporting Schools competition as well as juniors who ‘stop’ playing over the summer periods

• a Development Squad is introduced to increase the number of high performing junior athletes

• training camps are implemented to provide information and resources necessary for the achievement of a high-performance culture

• introduction of a Para High Performance program. The activity will leverage off the opportunity that Sporting Schools has created (funded externally) to offer pathways for high performance. Below is an outline of the pathways and the associated gaps that this project targets:

• Sporting Schools Program (existing project funded and run through the NSO)

• Club Coaching structures (existing funding in place and managed at the club level)

• Talent Identification (gap)

• High Performance Program (gap). Since 2006 the TTSA High Performance program has been overseen by Paul Langley with the new funding program in place since 2016. Below is a summary of the results achieve to date.
