Financial Summary

Gifts of endowment and discretionary support have become increasingly critical to the fiscal health of the law school as we work to recover from the impact of the economic downturn, while making progress toward significant changes in the curriculum of the law school.

A substantial portion of Stanford Law School’s annual operating budget comes from the

generous support of our alumni, friends, and parents. This support comprised XX percent of the school’s revenue this year and your continued gifts remain crucial to our success.

The following charts illustrate both the financial health of the law school and the indispensable nature of your support.

Contributions to the Law School 2010-2011

*The figure reported for “Total Dollars Raised” includes contributions not designated for use in the fiscal year that they were given. For example, some gifts are designated for multi-year research projects or to be invested with the endowment. Accordingly, “Total Dollars Raised” ($XXXXXX) will always be more than the source of income attributed to “Gifts and Grants” ($XXXXX) since the latter figure only accounts for contributions that are to be used in the current fiscal year.

Tuition and Financial AidThe financial aid offer from SLS is often a critical component of an admitted student’s decision to enroll at the school. Approximately 80 percent of all SLS students take out loans, receive tuition fellowships, or some combination of the two.

LRAPThe Miles and Nancy Rubin Loan Repayment Assistance Program (LRAP) provides support for students who elect to pursue a career in public service, without having to manage the burden of their law school loans on a public service salary. The LRAP program makes possible a wide variety of career choices for graduates committed to working in public interest. Nearly twenty-five years after its inauguration, Stanford’s LRAP program continues to set the standard for such programs at peer institutions.

The Stanford ChallengeIn 2006, Stanford University launched The Stanford Challenge, the university-wide campaign to provide critical support for the next generation of leaders: our students. As the campaign comes to a close on December 31, 2011, the law school will have achieved a number of goals, including the completion of the William H. Neukom Building, the expansion of our international curriculum, and the growth of our clinical legal education programs.

in these remaining months before the end of the campaign, our top priorities remain:

•Strengthenthefoundationofourfinancial aid and loan repayment assistance programs to remain accessible to all qualified applicants, regardless of their financial means;

•Expandtheclinical education program such that every student interested in pursuing a clinical experience can do so;

•Achievethe$28millionannualgivinggoal,which bolsters our core institutional strength and our ability to seize new opportunities. Going forward, secure $4 million or more in gifts annually for the Law Fund.

The Law FundYour unrestricted gifts to Stanford Law School enable extraordinary opportunities for our students that would otherwise be impossible. Each year, the Law Fund supports many activities enjoyed by students that enrich their academic experience. Most importantly, the Law Fund helps to bridge the gap between support from tuition and the endowment, and the actual cost of running the school.

Fundraising Report Financial Aid

I relied on financial aid to bridge the gap between what I could afford and the cost of tuition, as did 65 percent of my peers. as I look forward to a career in the public sector, annual gifts from alumni have allowed me to have a powerful experience in the clinical program, and to pursue a career path of my choosing, not simply of necessity.

–SuSan chaMPIOn, JD ’11

I came to the law school because I believed strongly in the value of public service. I was deeply impressed by the commitment to public interest and public sector law I believe was demonstrated by Stanford’s commitment to students entering their careers. I am grateful for the way LraP has made it possible for me to pursue my goals.

Expanded Campus

A New Landscape for Legal Education Over the duration of The Stanford Challenge, two building projects helped the law school realize its vision for an integrated, collaborative campus.

The munger graduaTe reSidence offers housing for 600 students in fully furnished apartments, made possible by a generous gift from Charles T. Munger and Nancy Munger, BA ‘45. Graduate students from all disciplines across the university live, study, and eat together. The interdisciplinary nature of Munger is designed to reflect the changing culture of Stanford Law School, where students can take advantage of a broader curriculum through courses outside the law school and through joint degree programs.

The william h. neukom Building, new focal point for the law school, provides 65,000 square feet of much-needed office and academic space. Made possible by a lead gift from William H. Neukom, LLB ‘67, the building, opened in 2011, fulfills the needs of an expanding faculty, fosters the collaboration essential to a rich educational experience, and strengthens the visual identity of the law school. Interconnected, communal spaces encourage formal and informal faculty-student interaction, intended to inspire innovative legal thinkers.

as a participant in The Mills Legal clinic, I work with other students to assist a wide range of non-profit and small companies by providing legal guidance and documentation on complex issues. The ability to help serve the community is rewarding. The educational benefits of this kind of work are unparalleled.

–JOrDan bOWLer, JD ’11

Clinics

Clinics: building skills and training the next generation of leadersParticipating in the Mills Legal Clinic builds students’ skills in client management, negotiation, writing, and factual analysis. Under the close supervision of clinic faculty, they gain experience and confidence by working with real clients on real cases. For today’s students, the clinic experience is transformational in their education, while imparting a commitment to lifetime engagement in public service and pro bono activities.

To read more about the clinics, click here.

Interdisciplinary Programs The law school now offers 27 joint degree programs. Additionally, students can pursue a customized academic experience through programs and centers at SLS and around the entire university, making the law school a pioneer in interdisciplinary education.

GivingOpportunities

Ways to Give There are many opportunities to invest in the students and faculty of Stanford Law School. While the law school relies on long-term support for the endowment, we need gifts at all levels, annual and expendable, to ensure our success.

The law fund Annual gifts to the Law Fund allow the dean to direct funds to the

school’s highest priorities, including clinical education, financial aid

and student support, faculty research and scholarship, and capital

improvements. More than 90 percent of the law school’s donors

contribute to the Law Fund.

capiTal gifTS Over the past thirty years, changes and growth in our academic

programs and centers and the swift expansion of our clinical

programs have necessitated additional space for program staff,

fellows, clinics, and meeting rooms. Gifts made for capital projects

support new construction and more efficient use of the current

law school campus. Naming opportunities for larger capital gifts

exist in the Munger Graduate Residence and the William H.

Neukom Building.

endowmenT gifTS Permanent endowment funds may be created with larger gifts

providing annual income for specific purposes. An endowed fund—

most often for a professorship or financial aid—recognizes the

donor or someone of the donor’s choosing in perpetuity.

planned giving Through a living trust or bequest, a donor may be able to make a

more significant contribution to the school; by designating Stanford

Law School as a beneficiary of a life insurance policy, IRA, or other

retirement plan; or through other planned giving vehicles that can

provide both tax savings and current income to the donor.

expendaBle reSearch and program SupporT Gifts to expendable funds are spent immediately and may be

directed to support specific programs or research—for example,

an interdisciplinary program or clinic.

For more information on ways to make a gift, please call

650.736.1238 or email [email protected].
