ORANGE INSIDER
T heir records are identical. So are their problems.
“Syracuse is a team that’s very, very similar to us,” Louisville’s Steve Kragthorpe
said. “They’re very beat up right now, playing a lot of young guys.”
Kragthorpe offered that opinion early Monday afternoon. By Monday night the Orange’s already grave situation grew graver still when the school announced that All-Big East nose tackle Arthur Jones and starting offensive tackle Jonathan Meldrum were done for the season with knee injuries. Each complained of knee pain during SU’s 37-10 loss at Pittsburgh, a game that had already claimed starting tight end Cody Catalina (knee) and starting strong safety Max Suter (arm) to season-ending injuries.
Ouch. Ouch. Ouch. Ouch. Even before those disheartening injuries to key players the Orange (3-6, 0-4 Big East) took only 55 players to Pitt, five below the travel-team limit of 60, due to defections and injuries. There may be plenty of empty seats on the team’s charter plane today when it travels to
Louisville to face the Cardinals (3-6, 0-4) at noon Saturday. …

2009TEAM STATISTICS
SU’SLEADERS
HOWTHEY STACKUP
Running backsThe Cards have three talented backs led by the dynamic Victor Anderson (5.6 ypc). SU’s Delone Carter has come on strong of late.
Receivers Scott Long (38 receptions for 550 yards) has battled through injuries to emerge this season. SU’s group lacks a deep threat.
Offensive line SU’s group is improving in run game and allows fewer sacks (21-28) than Cards, even though teams pass roughly the same amount.
Defensive line Loss of star Arthur Jones inside and Jared Kimmel at DE hurts SU in depth and talent. UL’s front four is only average.
Linebackers UL’s Jon Dempsey (87 tackles, 4 sacks) is having a great season in the middle. So is SU’s Derrell Smith (79 tackles, 6.5 sacks).
Quarterbacks Neither team is exactly settled here, as the Cards’ trio has a poor 6/9 TD/INT ratio and the Orange duo’s is a mediocre 12/14.
Secondary Loss of strong safety Max Suter weakens an already weak SU unit that has allowed 20 TD passes. UL’s group is decent.
Special teams SU gets a slight edge at kicker and punter, but its coverage teams have been suspect all season. Nothing special about UL.
