After School ProgramsRegistration information and class offerings will be sent electronically later in the summer. There will also be a preview of programs at Registration Day on Monday, August 15th.

Questions: email Christine Pratt at [email protected].

School Supplies & TechnologyThe Joy School provides all basic school supplies for all students. All students should bring a backpack, and Middle School students need a binder. A technology letter will be sent later in the summer indicating student computer needs. Eighth grade math students will need a graphing calculator TI-84 Plus Silver Edition — either the regular or the C edition. The C is rechargeable and it has color.

Hot Lunch Catering ProgramThe Joy School offers catered hot lunch options. The menu and registration form will be available later this summer. This year we are using Jason’s Deli and Domino’s Pizza for hot lunch.

Questions: email Leslie Smith at [email protected].

CarpoolingWe will have carpool lists categorized by zip code available shortly after school starts. Please do not feel pressured to participate. However, many families use this contact information to make friends with their neighbors and save a few dollars on gas. Contact Leslie Smith after school starts for help with carpooling.

Dear Joy School Families,

At TJS we strive to put the joy back in learning. While the focus is on our students, there are also many opportunities for parents to get involved and discover joy.

If you want to learn about getting involved, the Parent Association Meeting is the perfect place to start. Unlike traditional parent associations, this group doesn’t require monthly meetings with long agendas. The Parent Association allows you flexibility. You’ll get the chance to meet other parents while supporting faculty and contributing to the School community.

In addition to volunteering, parents support The Joy School’s mission through our two fundraising events. You can learn more about each below. Your participation enhances our academic programs, learning environment and facilities. The safe, supportive educational environment we provide for students with learning differences would not be possible without your amazing support!

The Joy School is filled with wonderful and dedicated families. I look forward to working with you on behalf of all our students!

Sincerely,Deborah KirklandDirector of Development713-523-0660 ext. [email protected]

Events, Volunteering & SupportA Message from the Director of Development

The Annual Fund

The Annual Fund is the heart of The Joy School’s fundraising efforts, ensuring TJS can deliver our special brand of education based on small classes, skilled teachers, and the materials to meet the unique needs of our students.

Be on the lookout for communication from the 2016-17 Annual Fund Parent Chairs in September!

Where do the funds go?Gifts to the Annual Fund support the School’s operating budget. A few items the Annual Fund allows the School to provide:

• Highly trained faculty and staff with competitive compensation

• Student Financial Aid• Remedial support from faculty specialists• Full-time speech-language pathologists• Faculty and staff training, conferences,

workshops and more!

The Annual Luncheon

Every year, parents look forward to this highly-anticipated Houston community event. Our Luncheon features a distinguished guest speaker who discusses topics that interest educational professionals, parents, business leaders and more.

Save the date: February 23, 2017

Where do the funds go?Proceeds from the Luncheon primarily benefit the Student Financial Aid Fund, which supports children who would not otherwise have the opportunity to attend The Joy School.

In addition, funds generated from the Luncheon are combined with Annual Fund gifts to help meet the School’s operating needs.

Join us on Tuesday, September 13th at 8:00 a.m. for the Parent Association Meeting. You can meet other parents and sign up to volunteer at events at the meeting. Specifics about each volunteer

Every student enrolled in The Joy School shall be immunized against vaccine preventable diseases caused by infectious agents in accordance with the immunization schedule adopted by the Texas Department of State Health Services.

Attendance at The Joy School is contingent on students being current on all required immunizations. Prior to the first day of school, all students must present valid written evidence to The Joy School from their treating physician (M.D. or D.O.), reflecting that all required immunizations have been received. The treating physician must be licensed to practice in the State of Texas and the physician’s license number must be reflected on the immunization documentation.

The only exception to the foregoing requirement considered by The Joy School is a medical exemption signed by the student’s treating physician (M.D. or D.O.). All students requesting a medical exemption must present valid written evidence to The Joy School from their treating physician, reflecting the medical basis for the requested exemption. The treating physician must be licensed to practice in the State of Texas and the physician’s license number must be reflected on the medical exemption documentation.

The Joy School does not consider conscious-based exemptions or any other exemptions.

Immunization PolicyEffective July 1, 2015

Statement from the Texas Attorney General

“Conscientious objections or waivers, which may be permissible for attendance in public schools, do not qualify as an exemption in Private Schools. A private school that does not accept state tax funds is not required to accept for enrollment a child who has received an exemption for the immunizations required by the Texas Health and Safety Code. (Atty. Gen. OP GA-0420).”
