Q1: The teaching environment in ASC has been improving over the last five years.
(no label) Disagree
CommentsUnits teach because of how funds are allocated, not for the students experience. Peer evaluations of instruction ascurrently are useless. In most units, there is no oversight over faculty punctuality to classes.

CommentsSemester conversion has doubled class sizes. Semester conversion happened with little thought to curriculum.Discourse about "owing" classes and changing standards for enrollment (last day of the semester?) is hurting morale.Rolling in educational policy "reform" with increased paperwork, increased quantitative assessment is making it morehierarchical and bureaucratic.

CommentsThe intensification of "Assessment" combined with the move to electronic SEI forms whose response rate is so lowthat we have now had to institute regular peer evaluations of ALL assistant and associate professors -- even thosewhose SEIs are outstanding -- has led to much greater time being spent by all of us on things that have little ornothing to do with teaching.

CommentsI would say it has improved but I am very concerned about the increased emphasis on online teaching. Having taughtone of the 10 GE courses as part of the provost's initiative last year. I do not think A&S has seriously thought aboutonline teaching and the pedagogical implications of online teaching. For online teaching to be effective, it needs toengage the students. That is impossible to do when the course as an enrollment cap of 600 students.

CommentsThere has been a steady counter current to developing stronger courses and programs in the College of Humanities. With the emphasis on numbers of students, there are disincentives to improve the content and teaching of thecourses. Sometimes we need to challenge OSU students to move out of their comfort zones. Big number courses donot thrive in discomfort zones. OSU Humanities needs to have high-performing programs that give our studentsadvantages when they leave us for their futures. We have the capacity to implement these programs, but not theleadership or the will.

CommentsAs colleagues retire and are not replaced, class sizes have gone up, which has reduced my effectiveness as ateacher--among other things, I am no longer able to connect individually with as many students, nor am I able toassign as many writing exercises that involve extended argumentation. Since writing is a very clear weakness of thestudents I have encountered at OSU, I feel that I am doing them a disservice by cutting back on these assignments, but I simply can't handle that much grading AND shoulder an increased service burden necessitated by the shrinkingfaculty numbers, AND maintain an active research agenda.

CommentsThe fear of classes being cancelled due to low enrollments has affected the way we teach and the way we plan ourclasses. At a major research university, and with some classes in ASC and in my particular department doing verywell in terms of enrollments, to have a class cancelled, especially an innovative experimental one or a graduateseminar, is a **TRAVESTY** of the highest order. Also, the technology available in some of the classrooms is not upto standards -- all of the classrooms that ASC uses should be similarly equipped and have the latest technology inthem. This is a MAJOR university and we should act like it!

Q1: The teaching environment in ASC has been improving over the last five years.

CommentsThere is certainly a lot of discussion of teaching and curriculum development, which is positive. Classroomtechnology is good, and opportunities for online course development and teaching seem to be being pursued in avery sane way, neither overhyped nor underplayed, with substantial technology support and steady ramp-up. Theprocess of introducing new courses at Ohio State remains absurdly bureaucratic, though this seems neither better norworse than 5 years ago. But the bureaucracy is enough to dampen the spirit of any but the most determined facultymember, and it is easily the biggest obstacle to creative curriculum development and faculty initiative in teaching. Theprimary negative is the emphasis on assessment, which I regard as an utter waste of time and an insult to faculty.Faculty are constantly assessing how well our students are learning and how well our curriculum is functioning, andcooking up checklists and metrics will not improve this at all. The net effect is negative because all of the time andeffort and money that goes to meeting the needs of the assessment-industrial complex comes out of the time andeffort and money that we can put to actual teaching and research.

CommentsThere are many non-native speakers in my General Education course, making the assignment of papers very difficult.I spend a great deal of time grading papers, trying to give these students feedback that will help them not just in myclass, but hopefully will improve their writing in other courses as well. The truth is that these students do not have theEnglish writing skills to be taking humanities courses like mine.

CommentsMore and more students are rude and disruptive in class. Use of handheld electronics (for purposes other than notetaking) in class is out of control. Walking in late and leaving early are common. A surprising number of students areshocked and angry when they are held to the standards of the syllabus, for instance when they fail a midterm forwhich they have obviously not studied. Also, the buildings inhabited by the humanities departments are in scandalousdisrepair. The university should be ashamed of the condition of Denney Hall, where dust and gravel spew from theHVAC ducts into the classrooms and offices.

CommentsTechnology in the classrooms makes everything easier, and the classrooms are generally in much better shape thanthey were ten or more years ago. But the schedule is odd (did no one ever teach on semesters before us, so we hadto reinvent the wheel?), and it seems to be very random how students sign up for classes, netting huge classessometimes and small ones other times, with no apparent rhyme or reason. Students continue to work a lot, whichcauses them to skip class a lot. And the financial pressures mean my department has mostly ceased offering honorsclasses and has combined most UG/G classes, which simply leads to a different learning environment.

CommentsI perceive two disastrous developments over the past few years a) Dropping AP to 3: this has brought in manystudents with insufficient knowledge (plus it has wrought havoc with our enrollments) b) The spread of Onlinecourses: admittedly this keeps instructors and students safer, since they can stay away from campus and the risk ofgetting shot, but the standard of the courses is far below that of courses taught in person, with real exchangesbetween students as well as between instructor and students. (If you don't believe me, pray consider the attrition rateof those Online courses that try to maintain some standards, as students drop because the instructor disappointstheir expectation of an automatic pass

CommentsThe answers to questions 1 and 2 may very well depend and vary from department to department. The teachingenviornment was a reasonable in the department till 2010, when the current Chair took over in my department. Hehas essentially redefined teaching to mean something quiet different from teaching in the traditional sense and hasbeen subjecting faculty to punitive treatments if they did not go along with his definition.

CommentsDepends on your definition of "teaching environment." By my own definition, it has been declining precipitously. Therelentless pressure to try to up departmental enrollments at all costs has made quality and creativity in teachingsecondary concerns. We are, more and more, panderers and entertainers who will do pretty much anything to attractand retain majors. The forces behind this are, I realize, driven at the University and less the College level, but thatdoesn't change the result. It's striking that I received the invitation to take this survey right after coming from adepartment faculty meeting where our chair informed us that opportunities to teach in the various Centers are almostcertainly going to diminish, since the College refuses to credit those enrollments to the faculty member/TIU (thoughthis is contrary to what I've been told for years was the policy).

CommentsASC faculty at my campus (a regional campus) are exploring ways of improving student success, mostly byincreasing our interaction with students outside the classroom. To maintain such commitment to my students, I willneed my department to set realistic expectations for my research. I want to continue to be a researcher, but may notbe able to be as productive as I was before this new emphasis on student success. I think the emphasis isappropriate, and is probably overdue, but I hope the administration--both in my department and at my campus--willhelp me strike the right balance.

CommentsThe teaching technology and classroom environments have degraded considerably. Classrooms are not conducive tolearning. The loss of teaching assistants due to budgetary constraints limits creative teaching, especially for those ofus teaching larger classes, and the extra time necessary for classroom management take away from time dedicatedto actual learning. The emposed minimum class sizes reqired for courses to be taught are inflexible and do notconsider what a great university or discipline should offer their students.

Q1: The teaching environment in ASC has been improving over the last five years.
(no label) Neutral
CommentsThis is a very broad question. Many things about teaching have improved over the past 5 years. The sheer academicquality of the students has risen significantly. Pedagogical innovations have crept into the curriculum of manydepartments. Students are learning in new ways. But the punishing emphasis on enrollments and credit hours hasforced faculty to teach larger classes at lower levels. Fewer graduate courses can be offered. Faculty have feweropportunities to offer new courses on material that is not already proven to draw the new career-minded, risk-averseyoung people who are drawn to OSU. This has stripped much of the joy from teaching.

CommentsThe need to consistently brand course offerings as ASC, an implicit desire for uniformity over recognized discipline-based diversity, has been harmful. Failure to fully recognize the impact of semester conversion, and have anappropriate fiscal response, has also had a negative impact. CommentsOverall teaching has stayed much the same at OSU as when I got here about 25 years ago, but some things havegotten better. Instructional spaces and technology are greatly improved, and while one can gripe about OSUbureaucracy, one exceptional standout is the new Office of Distance Education and eLearning (ODEE), which issimply remarkable. In my department we have no untenured instructors, so we've been spared the spectacle of moreand more teaching devolving onto underpaid instructors that has become a complaint at other universities. In thisOSU appears to be trying to be better than its peers.

CommentsThe minimum students for a course to be officially offered, or for the instructor to get credits teaching, in ourdepartment's graduate classes (and probably undergraduate classes as well) changed every semester over the lasttwo semesters in our Department. There is no transparency on why the number increased . It has caused confusionsand low morales for myself and perhaps some of, or even many other fellow faculty members. The changes wereabruptly announced, apparently from the dean level to the chair, without substantiating the reason, linking 'cost' tocredit hours and number of students taking the courses.

CommentsI am frustrated that the near-universal focus of OSU-internal teaching-related grants is on distance learning. (I havealso had a bad experience with the Office of Distance Education and eLearning. I have heard similar stories fromother faculty.) I have been trying to develop an undergraduate course for the Data Analysis GE requirement. Sincedevelopment of the course is more work-intensive than for a typical course -- requiring development of new, large-scale data sets and computer programs/technologies -- some kind of grant support or release time is needed. Dataanalytics, STEM, and technologically-literate students are supposedly a current point of focus at the university (asevidenced, e.g., by the new data analytics major). Yet because the course does not have a distance learningcomponent, I have (so far) been unable to find the resources needed for the course's development. TheDepartmental Impact Grant would have been a natural source of the support, but its elimination has left a void.

Q1: The teaching environment in ASC has been improving over the last five years.
(no label) Disagree
CommentsA very broad question. In physical terms, there has been some improvement, but also some decline. Classrooms aregenerally well equipped with instructional technology. Constraints on classroom space due to the shift to semesters, however, have meant that faculty are now teaching in rooms all over campus, and some are better than others. (Onecurrent class is in a cramped room in Smith Lab, another in the state-of-the art lecture hall in Hagerty.) Other aspectsof teaching have declined. The university's policy to favor declared STEM majors in admissions has resulted in adecrease in Humanities students, even though there has actually been no decreased in applications or interest.Faculty are now having to compete with each other more aggressively to market their courses, both within and acrossdepartments. The university continues to pay lip service to the desirability of interdisciplinary teaching, but thisremains virtually impossible to do, given the administrative mechanics.

Q1: The teaching environment in ASC has been improving over the last five years.
(no label) Strongly Disagree
CommentsThe heavy emphasis on enrollments has damaged a teaching culture based on content and expertise, because it haslead department chairs to enforce teaching that they regarded as high-enrollment regardless the wishes or expertiseof their faculty. The reduction in the number of regular faculty as a consequence of the financial problems and theirreplacement by lecturers has led to sinking quality in teaching. A glaring example is that according to hearsay andobservation Honors Courses are now being taught by lecturers - either because the Honors School relaxed theirstandards, or chairs didn't bother to contact the School.

CommentsThe reward structure clearly favors getting grants with overhead, generating income through patents and licenses, and similar activities. There is an ongoing erosion of the General Education curriculum with a flood of dubiouscourses (The Science of Chocolate) and a stampede of on-line courses. The General Education core is now largelytaught by adjuncts, lecturers and the like.

CommentsI only have perspective really on the teaching environment in my department. It seems healthy insofar as equity ofload, commitment to best practices, incorporation of technology, etc. Our department is getting better at peer reviewsof teaching and this is good. UCAT or whatever it's called now, is terrific. The Ratner award is good. College anduniversity invested in our teaching facilities, and that helps the "environment" but mostly teaching environment seemssomething dealt with at the local, department level.

CommentsThe emphasis on enrollments, at the expense of pedagogical considerations, is appalling. And to the extent that theuniversity pays lip service to teaching, it involves many more bureaucratic hurdles such as peer evaluations ofteaching. If the university actually cared about teaching they would cap my class sizes and give me TA support (sothat I can assign appropriate writing exercises and still have a shot at tenure).

Q1: The teaching environment in ASC has been improving over the last five years.
(no label) Disagree
CommentsThe teaching environment includes quality of students, the assignment of full-time (tenured) faculty to regular andsubstantial roles in the teaching corps (both graduate and undergraduate), the extent of laboratory experience, theavailability of graduate student associates to supplement the teaching process, and the number of students in eachclass. The switch to the semester system has had a negative effect on the ability of undergraduate students tochoose a broad range of courses, since there are only two choices per year rather than three. The extraordinaryemphasis of the university administration on outside research funding and the tendency to hire for grant suitableresearch programs rather than for a candidate with a balanced teaching/research prospect, has a negative effect onthe teaching mission of the university. This effort has even resulted in the hiring (as pseudo-professors) staff who areengaged only, or mostly, in non-teaching roles. Their participation in sponsoring graduate students in their studiestoward advanced degrees is vulnerable to serious imbalance in the instruction of the student. Finally it has beenpolicy to release the highest rated professors from some or all of their teaching duties and, in particular, relief fromonerous teaching of beginning undergraduate courses. A serious mistake. For these and many other reasons, I amconcerned that the teaching environment has suffered over the past five years.

Q1: The teaching environment in ASC has been improving over the last five years.

CommentsClass enrollments are increasing every semester. I have two classes each with 50+ students and no TA. In the pastthese were classes with enrollments of 25 and 40. I have to change the way I teach to accommodate the additionalstudents, and I think it reduces the quality of the experience for the students, plus it adds to my stress. Going fromquarters to semesters increased time in the classroom, and most notably, we went from 20 to 30 weeks of teaching. There has been no recognition of this, there has been nothing to compensate for this increase in teaching time (psychteaching loads excepted -- my understanding is they have a 2-1 load although the rest of SBS has a 2-2 load). Therehas been no reduction in expectations for research productivity. We were busy before the transition. We areoverloaded now. We have lost many faculty in our department and we are stretched very thin.

Q1: The teaching environment in ASC has been improving over the last five years.

CommentsIt is much harder to teach courses that enroll relatively few students--even when those courses are vital to a major orto the acquisition of a language. It is also harder than before to teach interdisciplinary courses. By this I mean twothings: it is harder for one's department to 'lend' one to a Center (such as CMRS) because everyone is strapped forteachers to cover a department's basic courses; and, it is much harder to do team-teaching of any kind.

CommentsOne of my major concerns is related to international students (mostly from China) who are not ready to matriculate ata US University. One of our majors has been negatively impacted by students who are selecting our major becausethey did not make the cut at Fisher, or in one of the STEM fields. Ours is a major that requires excellent writing andpresentation skills, we have no quantitative testing metrics, so these students are struggling and requiring moreassistance than we have resources for...Several faculty, and our advising staff, have become distressed by thisproblem. Two students language skills were so poor, I could not place then in their required appliedlearning/internship hours. One brings a friend to translate for her. Is this even a thing we allow?

Q1: The teaching environment in ASC has been improving over the last five years.
(no label) Strongly Disagree
CommentsAbsolutely not. The classroom situation is a disaster--including the lack of computers in many classrooms. Faculty inmy department have to bring and set up their own laptops for every class. This means if the classroom from theprevious class is slow to empty, the class might start late as the professor is still setting up. It is ridiculous that someclasses are held in places like the movie theater on High Street. The smell of popcorn and the music playing areinappropriate for an academic setting. Because the scheduling office seems to avoid allowing faculty to teach neartheir own offices and departmental homes, the environment is not conducive to after-class talks with students.

CommentsThe bulk of my time and duties are such that I cannot give an informed opinion on this in terms of agreement ordisagreement on improvement in teaching. Q1: The teaching environment in ASC has been improving over the last five years.

CommentsFirst, let me thank you for sending out this survey--this is the most encouraging thing we have seen in those 5 yrs!Semester conversion has posed serious challenges. With 5 courses the norm, even--or especially--the best studentsare exhausted, and doing less reading than they used to. I have cut down content and eased up workloads from whatI did successfully on quarters--especially on the once very useful Carmen discussion requirements. Even so, classdiscussion always feels like it's being cut short. At the same time the reduction of upper-level and grad courses due toenrollment pressures is frustrating students and professors--the grad students in particular tend to feel cheated ofwhat they signed up for. At undergrad level, balancing the crowd-pleasing with academic priorities has become moredifficult. Faculty losses in my own very successful but interdisciplinary program make it increasingly difficult to staffour minor and GIS. Curricular incentives are potentially interesting but very hard to balance with the bottom line. Whocan afford to apply for that team-teaching grant?

CommentsWhile the quality of the student body has been consistently improving, it isn't at all clear that the central administrationis placing instruction as a high priority. The "Teaching and Learning Institute" has been implemented but it isuncertain how effective this will be. Improving and REWARDING the instruction of our students needs to be a focusand a highly visible priority.

Q1: The teaching environment in ASC has been improving over the last five years.
(no label) Strongly Disagree
CommentsBudget cuts, aging infrastructure, bureaucratic hassles, and the prevalent focus on vocational training rather than aliberal education all make ASC a poor teaching environment. The semester conversion was a terrible idea that hasadded to confusion and hassles over scheduling and has left our students stretched too thin trying to manage fivecourses at a time as well as sports, extracurricular activities and all too often jobs. I transferred here from anothercollege three years ago, so I am probably more acutely aware of these problems than either new faculty (who aregrateful for a job) or faculty who have taught for a long time at OSU (and are used to the ways things run here).

CommentsThe university's admissions policy is done with no consultation with faculty. While the student standard has risen---the majors needed for certain programs has declined--particularly in the arts where it is well known that ACT scoresdo not define the strong, talented art student. CommentsUCAT has been a big help, but not enough people seek it out. While in class teaching is quite good, it seems thatfewer people are willing to put energy into helping individual students who need help--from recommendation letters toserving on various committees for them. The burden is distributed very unequally. Although there are exceptions, much of the burden then seems to be on women faculty, who then are not as productive with their own work.

CommentsOn the plus side there is more technology available to support teaching. At the same time there is increased pressureby upper administration to make offerings that have serious potential of lowering academic standards as well asswamping involved faculty with inordinate loads of administrative work that distract from actual content-focusedinteractions with students. Examples include * Offerings of online instruction (courses, degrees...) * Offerings of non-degree credits * Offerings of all sorts-of transition and special purpose degree programs. (professional orient, teachercertif, underrepresented, etc) Some of these may be done while maintaining high standards that, at least in someapproximation, compare to regular academic programs. However, the anxiety by upper admin to somehow miss theboat has led to a rush and pressures that the required deliberation gets lost. Also little to no human resources aremade available to departments to create these things - it is simply expected that faculty drown themselves in absurdtime commitments.

Q1: The teaching environment in ASC has been improving over the last five years.

CommentsThe new curriculum has diminished the quality of the undergraduate experience and the undergraduate degree, ashave state-mandated changes that have given AP credit for 3's. In my own field, History, we know--even frominstructors who design the AP tests--that high school students do not have sufficient experience or maturity tounderstand cause and effect relationships in the sophisticated ways we expect in college, nor to read documentscritically. Avoiding college history is a terrible mistake--made worse by the ASC decision to allow courses like theHistory of Sport, History of Fashion, and History of Rock and Roll count as "general education" courses, which hasundermined enrollments in outstanding, highly-rated undergraduate courses that do prepare students for the future, like the History of the World since 1914. It's a disaster in which the University is wholly complicit. The icing on thecake was a recent flier from the School of Engineering, announcing that its students should sign up for its "easy"course in the History of Engineering so they could fulfill their history requirement--rather than, I suppose, the rigorouscourse in the history of technology taught by the prize-winning historian of technology we hired away from NYU,Christopher Otter--who is an outstanding, highly rated teacher. We hired him to meet the needs of the engineeringstudents, but Engineering wants the money. It's wholly corrupt. Second, there is simply no leadership when it comesto implementing the new curriculum. I have been working with a small group of faculty who teach GE data analysiscourses to improve the quality and consistency of those courses, but the administration has not supported our effortsin any significant way, and we do not have the incentives to motivate the vast majority of GE data analysis instructorsto participate. All we have as a university is a three-sentence statement of what the courses should achieve. Nostandard assessment process, no training in best pedagogical practices, no sharing of problem sets or techniques--nothing, even though the university has made data analytics a top priority. Every mathematician on campus knowsthat statistics is the most important college math course for students outside engineering, physics, and chemistry, and we know from study after study that the math skills of students in the humanities and the arts deteriorate overtheir four years in college--but nothing is done to address the problem. It's ridiculous. Third, we still don't have aneffective writing-across-the-curriculum program, because there is no mandate that the faculty receive WAC training. We have a great WAC program, but few faculty know what the WAC program is trying to achieve or how. And fourth, the 3-credit courses in the humanities, social sciences, and arts mean that most of our students are taking fivecourses at once. Young people can't multi-task successfully to that degree, any more than adults can. We werepromised by President Gee initially that we'd have the students take eight courses a year on semesters, rather than 9on the quarter system, so we could go into greater depth, as they do in many elite liberal arts colleges, including theone I used to teach at. Now they must take 10 courses a year, despite the greater number of hours our students workoutside of class on non-academic jobs. It makes no sense. Again, the administration takes the irresponsible way out--counting work loads by contact hours rather than work, which means that our introduction to our major, whichrequires five papers (and rewrites of those papers), plus individual meetings with faculty to discuss the papers, countsthe same as the on-line History of Rock and Roll. It's a joke.

Or if several drop out after I've done all the preparations and scheduled my yeararound one course program Changes come along too quickly and with too little warning to respond. Semesterconversion was a teaching disaster--now I teach all the time and feel burned out and unable to prepare new classesor think ahead to new strategies, develop new technologies, etc. Semester conversion added time to the year, despite all promises of being time neutral. Graduate seminars are now half again as many classroom hours. Studentsare overburdened

Q1: The teaching environment in ASC has been improving over the last five years.

CommentsThe transition to semesters has been a disaster for several reasons, the destruction of the teaching environmentbeing one of the most important. Because ASC undergraduates now typically take five courses, and take them over afifteen week term, all faculty have had to redesign the courses they teach entirely. This has been an enormousamount of uncompensated work. Students don't like it either. By the eleventh or twelfth week, they are almost allmentally and emotionally exhausted. I can't blame them, but it makes accomplishing anything meaningful in the lastfew weeks of the term. Moreover, the most recently founded ASC teaching awards don't add money to facultysalaries or give them time off, but rather only give them funds for additional intensive academic labor in the form ofcourse development. I develop new courses all the time and I don't need money to do so. Rather, I need time out ofthe classroom to come up with new ideas about teaching, but the College clearly doesn't care about that. There is anutter failure of leadership here.

Q1: The teaching environment in ASC has been improving over the last five years.
(no label) Disagree
CommentsASC has been underfunded, which has compromised the teaching mission of the college. Semester conversion, general education requirement changes, the increase of students entering the university with course credit from dualenrollment or advanced placement tests, and the increasing percentage of international students have all contributedto the current funding problems. The RCB budget model was never intended to run on auto-pilot. When it wasadopted a commitment was made to re-base the budget on a regular schedule (I believe every five years). Thebudgets have never been re-based. As a result of budgetary problems, it is much more difficult to teach the low-enrolling but vital courses required for advanced majors and graduate students. Team teaching is much lessfrequent. Class sizes have increased, which typically leads to lowered course requirements for students and lessacademic benefit for each course.

Q1: The teaching environment in ASC has been improving over the last five years.
(no label) Agree
CommentsI think that using SEI's to evaluate teaching is not just hurting but creates incentives to dampen teaching andrequirements from students, inflate grading (esp. on Mid Terms, and quizzes) and align it with what raises studentsSEI’s. This is particularly true at assistant Prof’s level as it’s critical for their tenure. Although this statement is notscientific the casual and anecdotal evidence is very large. OSU must come with a better way. I don’t even look atmine.

Q1: The teaching environment in ASC has been improving over the last five years.

CommentsThe minimum class size of 16 has become a slow death for teaching in our department. I am pressured everysemester to ditch courses that are near the cut-off, and often do so due to the future penalty of teaching a make-upcourse if the enrollment drops below 16 mid-semester. I think we are now in the situation of losing students to themajor because they cannot get the elective courses they need to finish the degree. There are fewer advancedclasses to take, so students go elsewhere. Now in our second or third year of the minimum 16, we are seeing theresults-- enrollments are really low this semester. One course of mine only has 11 enrolled, which is a shockingnumber. I last taught it in 2013, and I had 41 students. I got a 4.9 on the SEI for that course, with about 50%responding. This course is suffering from the minimum 16 policy--not an arcane field, as some might suggest. Theteaching environment has not improved, it has declined. And it will continue to decline as course offerings are prunedaway.

CommentsHard to say. If this means environment “for” teaching, the classroom facilities are better and support via Carmen hasimproved. Is the University more supportive of teaching by faculty? I am not sure. Students are better and that doesimprove the classroom situation, but I do not see more emphasis on teaching in annual evaluations and promotiondecisions. In the end, though, the quality of teaching depends upon the efforts of individual faculty members, whoseem as dedicated to it now as they have been in the past.

CommentsRestrictions on teaching outside the department squashes the impetus to develop further interdisciplinary teaching.Likewise with the College's marginalization of our Centers: these are vital to the energy and breadth of our teachingof undergraduates and the training of our graduate students. Also counterproductive: the rising minimum enrollmentnumbers required for graduate seminars, in combination with ever tighter strictures on admitting highly qualifiedundergraduates into 6000- and 7000-level classes.

CommentsThere has been a push to increase class sizes in the past five years, that makes it much more difficult to effectivelyteach. This affects both large lecture classes (e.g. differential equations going from ~60 to 120 students per lecture),and for small advanced classes (e.g. the minimum number of students needed for a 5000-level class to run has gonefrom 6 to 11).

CommentsThe electronic SEI system has been a disaster. It's demoralizing to have only a fraction of students complete the SEI,because these tend either to be the students who particularly like or dislike the course and instructor. The result isobviously unreliable and yet the university treats them as if they were valid. I realize this is beyond ASC's directcontrol but I would certainly appreciate it if ASC exerted its influence to have the SEI made mandatory. I doubt if areversion to the in-class SEI is in the cards, but it strikes me as possible to tie completion of the SEI to securing afinal course grade. That is to say, the registrar's office would not place a course grade on the transcript until astudent completes an SEI.

CommentsMaking money drives all of the administration's plans, and there is little consideration on the quality of teaching or theenvironment. There is a good amount of speak about interdisciplinary teaching and research but very little progresson creating a structure that supports it. Co-teaching is encouraged with a grant program, then penalized at thedepartment level in the FTE accounting/faculty inventory. There is a push for online course development with verylittle evidence of a strong fiscal or enhanced pedagogy models.

Q1: The teaching environment in ASC has been improving over the last five years.
(no label) Disagree
CommentsStudents are more teach-to-the-test oriented than they used to be, and there is more pressure from the administrationto improve enrollment 'efficiency' by both offering new courses that sound entertaining (let's study video games) andteaching larger sections. I don't know how any educator can actually believe that large classes are superior to smallclasses. With the focus on enrollment numbers, sexy discovery themes, and being entertaining, it does not seem thatarts and sciences is particularly interested in the intellectual experience of OSU students.

Q1: The teaching environment in ASC has been improving over the last five years.
(no label) Strongly Disagree
CommentsNo. It’s decidedly worse. ASC has, without meaningful consultation with the chairs, instituted rather arbitrary policesabout teaching loads, department teaching capacity, etc. Instead of comparing departments with similar departmentsin the same discipline at peer institutions, ASC is drifting increasingly to comparing departments within Ohio State outof some misguided sense of “fairness” that will ultimately compromise our competitiveness.

Q1: The teaching environment in ASC has been improving over the last five years.
(no label) Strongly Disagree
CommentsI speak with experience on this topic only in my own Department. During the past 5 years I witnessed severalnegative turns to the teaching environment: (1) with the change to semesters an increase in the teaching load, resulting naturally in an increase in the negative attitude of some Faculty towards the institution; (2) similarly thesemester experience from the point of view of the undergraduates I have taught is worse than under quarters - theyburn out around week 12, they get overwhelmed with the amount of material for a cumulative final, they have anarrower list of topics for their classes; (3) the emphasis on temporary teachers ( called lecturers, unemployed PhDs,unemployed postocs, spouses, etc) has gone from about 5-10 some 25 years ago to more than 60 (see the Depthomepage/people/lecturers.

CommentsI am teaching larger classes that span a long semester. For my intro classes, I no longer have recitation sectionswith my TAs because of a concern that fewer students will enroll in classes if they require them, and also becausethere are fewer TAs available. So my undergraduate teaching consists almost entirely of lecturing to large groups ofstudents. It's harder for me to be creative and to get to know the students as a result.

Commentsare you kidding me - ASC and OSU admin has ruined instruction at OSU in my 7 yrs here with ballooning classsizes, a focus on credit generation for budget purposes rather than quality of instruction or student needs, and fewerteaching assistants as we are forced to have graduate students teach courses independently because the college willnot fill faculty lines (1 teaching assistant for 240 student lecture class is what I am assigned !!!! - its factory farmingeducation) - when I started we had 36 faculty - now we are are done to 25...but enrollments have not gone down 33%- if anything they have remained the same.... all this is based on administration decisions on funding and resources....

CommentsClass sizes have increased due to budget cuts. In an effort to attract students from other colleges, underdevelopedon-line courses have been pushed through the system even though Carmen is a mediocre infrastructure for on-linelearning. The conditions of our classrooms are not good... although the technology provided is sufficient, the comfortof the spaces including acoustics, lighting control and locations often lead to circumstances that do not encouragestudents to come and to stay in class.

CommentsLack of replacement of tenure lines lost has led to reduced offerings in departments and heavier teachingresponsibilities. An intense dissatisfaction and demoralization is evident, as such decisions undermine the democraticprocesses and intellectual considerations that departments go through in deciding which teaching areas to prioritize.Semersterization and the sheer confusion over summer term has led to declining majors and minors. The lack ofvision thus implied is profound.

CommentsCuts to department and program budgets and lack of institutional support/resources for teachers of all ranks(lecturers, grad students, tenure track and tenured faculty) have placed increasing responsibility, pressure, and workon all teachers. Teachers are being asked to teach longer hours in larger classrooms with fewer resources andprotections. Cuts in support for students have impacted their ability to more fully participate in their educations and inclassrooms, as many are feeling the strain of having to work multiple jobs to pay tuition.

Q1: The teaching environment in ASC has been improving over the last five years.

CommentsStudents treated as consumers have come to believe they have bought the course and therefore are entitled toacceptable grades. This is a national trend and has generated great pressure on faculty everywhere to provide easiercourses, lower grading standards and greater accommodation to students' desires for the pace and content ofcourses. Since they are driven by financial concerns, including enrollment, the pressure from administrators is to givestudents what they want rather than what they need. Ohio State is a leader in these trends. If the business model isto be accepted, then students are the products of the system. The consumers are those who hire students with anOSU degree. It is in the long term interest of the University to ensure that the students who graduate are of highquality in their respective fields and in their overall education. It is in the long term interest of students to achieve thesame. But the short term culture of youth and immaturity make it difficult for most students to perceive this, especiallyin their first two or three years. The University could do much to help students realize the truth that not all learningshould be "just in time," but the short term culture of American business colludes with the culture of youth instead.Treating students as consumers is a pernicious process that undermines the fundamental purposes of education. Abasic problem is that people often elide education into instruction and a degree. They are not at all the same thing.Education is a process of realizing human potential by investment in developing and broadening knowledge, skillsand awareness. Instruction is a process of instilling procedures and information by routine and narrowing of interestsand awareness. Administrators assume the identity of education and instruction, while they are actually often directlyopposed in intent and consequence. Increasingly, the college degree is going the way of a high school diploma, certifying less and less, while costing (society and/or individuals) more and more. Education is a form of investment, while a degree should be a marker of achievement. Students and parents are not taught the difference and theUniversity is the loser in the process.
