SUNDAY OF THE MAN BORN BLIND

EPISTLE READINGACTS OF THE APOSTLES 16:16-34

It happened that as we were going to the place of prayer, a slave-girl having a spirit of divination met us, who was bringing her masters much profit by fortune-telling. Following after Paul and us, she kept crying out, saying, “These men are bond-servants of the Most High God, who are proclaiming to you the way of salvation.” She continued doing this for many days. But Paul was greatly annoyed, and turned and said to the spirit, “I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her!” And it came out at that very mo-ment. But when her masters saw that their hope of profit was gone, they seized Paul and Silas and dragged them into the market place before the authorities, and when they had brought them to the chief magistrates, they said, “These men are throwing our city into confusion, being Jews, and are proclaiming customs which are not lawful for us to accept or to observe, being Romans.” The crowd rose up together against them, and the chief magistrates tore their robes off them and proceeded to order them to be beaten with rods. When they had struck them with many blows, they threw them into prison, commanding the jailer to guard them securely; and he, having received such a command, threw them into the inner prison and fastened their feet in the stocks. But about midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns of praise to God, and the prison-ers were listening to them; and suddenly there came a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the pris-on house were shaken; and immediately all the doors were opened and everyone’s chains were unfastened. When the jailer awoke and saw the prison doors opened, he drew his sword and was about to kill himself, supposing that the prisoners had escaped. But Paul cried out with a loud voice, saying, “Do not harm your-self, for we are all here!” And he called for lights and rushed in, and trembling with fear he fell down before Paul and Silas, and after he brought them out, he said, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” They said, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household.” And they spoke the word of the Lord to him together with all who were in his house. And he took them that very hour of the night and washed their wounds, and immediately he was baptized, he and all his household. And he brought them into his house and set food before them, and rejoiced greatly, having believed in God with his whole household.

SUNDAY OF THE MAN BORN BLIND

GOSPEL READING JOHN 9:1-38

As He passed by, He saw a man blind from birth. And His disciples asked Him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he would be born blind?” Jesus answered, “It was neither that this man sinned, nor his parents; but it was so that the works of God might be displayed in him. We must work the works of Him who sent Me as long as it is day; night is coming when no one can work. While I am in the world, I am the Light of the world.” When He had said this, He spat on the ground, and made clay of the spittle, and applied the clay to his eyes, and said to him, “Go, wash in the pool of Siloam” (which is translated, Sent). So he went away and washed, and came back seeing. Therefore the neighbors, and those who previ-ously saw him as a beggar, were saying, “Is not this the one who used to sit and beg?” Others were saying, “This is he,” still others were saying, “No, but he is like him.” He kept saying, “I am the one.” So they were saying to him, “How then were your eyes opened?” He answered, “The man who is called Jesus made clay, and anointed my eyes, and said to me, ‘Go to Siloam and wash’; so I went away and washed, and I received sight.” They said to him, “Where is He?” He said, “I do not know.”They brought to the Pharisees the man who was formerly blind. Now it was a Sabbath on the day when Jesus made the clay and opened his eyes. Then the Pharisees also were asking him again how he received

Page 9: Sunday of the Man Born Blind - St. Stephen Cathedralstsbcc.org/siteAssets/bulletins/week09NEW-06MAY2018.pdf · 2019-06-08 · Vigil Vesper/Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom for Sunday

his sight. And he said to them, “He applied clay to my eyes, and I washed, and I see.” Therefore some of the Pharisees were saying, “This man is not from God, because He does not keep the Sabbath.” But others were saying, “How can a man who is a sinner perform such signs?” And there was a division among them. So they said to the blind man again, “What do you say about Him, since He opened your eyes?” And he said, “He is a prophet.”The Jews then did not believe it of him, that he had been blind and had received sight, until they called the parents of the very one who had received his sight, and questioned them, saying, “Is this your son, who you say was born blind? Then how does he now see?” His parents answered them and said, “We know that this is our son, and that he was born blind; but how he now sees, we do not know; or who opened his eyes, we do not know. Ask him; he is of age, he will speak for himself.” His parents said this because they were afraid of the Jews; for the Jews had already agreed that if anyone confessed Him to believe in Christ, he was to be put out of the synagogue. For this reason his parents said, “He is of age; ask him.” So a second time they called the man who had been blind, and said to him, “Give glory to God; we know that this man is a sinner.” He then answered, “Whether He is a sinner, I do not know; one thing I do know, that though I was blind, now I see.” So they said to him, “What did He do to you? How did He open your eyes?” He answered them, “I told you already and you did not listen; why do you want to hear it again? You do not want to become His disciples too, do you?” They reviled him and said, “You are His disciple, but we are dis-ciples of Moses. 29 We know that God has spoken to Moses, but as for this man, we do not know where He is from.” The man answered and said to them, “Well, here is an amazing thing, that you do not know where He is from, and yet He opened my eyes. We know that God does not hear sinners; but if anyone is God-fearing and does His will, He hears him. Since the beginning of time it has never been heard that anyone opened the eyes of a person born blind. 3 If this man were not from God, He could do nothing.” They answered him, “You were born entirely in sins, and are you teaching us?” So they put him out.Jesus heard that they had put him out, and finding him, He said, “Do you believe in the Son of Man?” He answered, “Who is He Lord that I may believe in Him?” Jesus said to him, “You have both seen Him, and He is the one who is talking with you.” And he said, “Lord, I believe.” And he worshiped Him.

Sunday of the Blind Man After the Mid-feast (John 7:14), the Lord Jesus Christ came to the Temple again and taught the people who came to Him (John 8:2). After leaving the Temple, He opened the eyes of a man “who was blind from his birth (John 9:1).The miracle described in today’s Gospel (John 9:1-38) is even more remarkable than it might seem at first. Saint Basil and other Fathers tell us that this was not just a case of giving sight to a blind man born with eyes that did not function, but to someone who had no eyes at all! The second Exapostilarion for this Sunday says, “Along the way, our Savior found a man who lacked both sight and eyes...”.The Gospel says, “Since the world began, it was not heard that any man opened the eyes of one who was born blind” (John 9:32). There are examples in the Old (Tobit 2:17) and New (Mark 8:22-26) Testaments of blind people receiving sight, but this is something completely unprecedented.

Evangelization Seminar Preparation Guide

Evangelization Presentation: May 20, 2018Time: After the 9:00 AM Divine LiturgyPlace: St. Stephen Cathedral (Church Building)

I. Prayer for Guidance in EvangelizationII. Basics of EvangelizationA. What is our message?B. Why do we evangelize?C. To whom do we evangelize?III. Guides and Resources in EvangelizationIV. Expected Challenges in EvangelizationV. How do we become strengthened in our Evangelization Effort?VI. How and when do we actually should we begin to evangelize?

Matthew 28: 19 – 20 “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Fa-ther and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.”

This guide has some questions and also is asking for some input to help us in our next presentation on Sun-day, May 20 after the 9:00 AM Divine Liturgy. Here are some questions you can answer which would help the presentation. At the end of this guide will be a brief overview outline of what we will present. Your answers to these questions and your input to us before the presentation will help us to touch on areas of evangelization. The participation of parishioners in our evangelization program here at St. Stephen Cathedral is a key component in having a successful evangelization effort. Your participation is greatly appreciated.

1- Do you think our parish needs an evangelization program?2- What message do you believe needs to be delivered in an evangelization program?3- Do you think evangelization should be with the specific mission of bringing people into our parish?4- What preparation must clergy and laity do in order to successfully evangelize others?5- Do you believe that Christ is calling all of us to spread the message of His Gospel?

Page 13: Sunday of the Man Born Blind - St. Stephen Cathedralstsbcc.org/siteAssets/bulletins/week09NEW-06MAY2018.pdf · 2019-06-08 · Vigil Vesper/Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom for Sunday

6- What positives do you see in the current evangelization effort of our parish?7- In what areas of evangelization do you think we are lacking?8- Do you think it should be a high priority of St. Stephen’s Cathedral Parish to create Byzantine Catholic Outreaches in the Phoenix Metropolitan Area that can eventually grow into Missions and then Parishes?9- What geographic area or areas do you suggest we begin Byzantine Outreaches?10- What do you think are the greatest fears and apprehensions that we as Byzantine Catholics face in our evangelization efforts?11- Do you think as a part of an evangelization program we should have a programto reach out to students at ASU?12- What are three specific suggestions can you give to help our cathedral parish evangelize others? 13- Is there a specific ministry or ministries in evangelization that you would like to volunteer for at our cathedral parish?

There may be some other questions about evangelization but the 13 questions seem to be a good start to get us thinking about evangelization. With that in mind we ask that you take some time to answer some of these questions and also give any input that you have about evangelization. Ideally, the sooner you can get this information to us the better. If we receive your input by May 16, we can place an outline of the presentation in the bulletin that weekend of May 19/20. Listed below is just a rough draft of what the evangelization presentation will be and your responses to the questions in this guide along with your suggestions will help us better address your concerns and needs about evangelization in the presentation on May 20. An important thing to remember in our evangelization efforts are that we have to be properly spiritu-ally prepared. It is possible that we will only get through several of the points in the presentation on that Sunday. We have to be careful not to rush our efforts but at the same time we need to begin. Please pray for a successful evangelization program for our parish.
