Team event feesEntry fees for multi-session team events are per

person per session; This does not apply to two-session Swiss teams.

This fee structure applies at NABCs to national rated knockouts (Vanderbilt, 0–10,000 KO), national Swiss team events (Jacoby Open Swiss, Machlin Women’s Swiss and 0–10,000 Swiss) and regional knockouts that are at least two days long.

Teams are charged the base price of the event times the number of persons on the team.

For example, an event with a base price of $16 is $64 for a team of four, $80 for a team of five, or

$96 for a team of six.

Vugraph operators neededWe are looking for vugraph operators for the

Vanderbilt Tuesday, March 13 through Friday, March 18. Start times on Tuesday and Wednesday are expected to be 1 and 7:30 p.m., moving to noon and 7 p.m. on Thursday and Friday.

JUST FOR NEW PLAYERSDuplicate practices

– part 1By Brent Manley

Bill Ryan tells the story of a club game where his left‑hand opponent, the dealer, passed, followed by 1♣ from his partner. Ryan bid 1NT, which was followed by a pass, and 1♥ from his partner. RHO accepted the insufficient bid by passing and Ryan again tried 1NT. Two more passes were followed by 1♠ (!) from his partner, again accepted by RHO with a pass. For the third time, Ryan bid 1NT. When he landed in 2NT and went down one, he could do no more than reflect that “after bidding 1NT three times, I should have known that was all I could make.”

Players who come to duplicate after playing mostly party bridge sometimes find the landscape difficult to navigate. There are many differences in procedures.

Duplicate is a social game, but during the auction and play, the talk is limited to questions about bids and/or carding agreements.

Yesterday’s column closed with a note about disclosing your agreements, mostly through what you and your partner put on your convention cards.

You may find it helpful to fill out the convention card with your partner. The process of checking the boxes and writing down agreements not covered helps you remember them. It is also a good idea to discuss agreements with your partner so that you are on the same page when the need for a convention arises during the auction.

Note that it is not appropriate for you to consult your convention card during the auction. You may, however, consult an opponent’s convention card at your right-hand opponent’s turn to call.

There are a couple of ways to notify the opponents about what you and your partner are doing. One is by saying the word “Alert,” the other by the method known as the Announcement.

The ACBL convention card makes differentiating between these methods easy. If a call requires an Alert, it is listed in red on the convention card. Some examples:

If your agreement is that all opening two-bids are strong, you must Alert when partner opens 2♦, 2♥ or 2♠, natural and forcing, showing a very strong hand. This is because strong two-bids are rare in today’s duplicate arena. For nearly every pair, an opening of 2♦, 2♥ or 2♠ is weak, usually showing a six-card suit and a range of 5-10 high-card points or something similar. The only strong opening in a suit is 2♣.

If you and partner are fans of the Bergen raises of major-suit openings, you must Alert when partner’s response to your opening of 1♠ or 1♥ is 3♣ or 3♦. Both show at least four-card support, the former with 6-9 support points, the latter with 10 or more points. Within that same scheme, a jump raise of a major-suit opening is weak and non-constructive. This, too, should be Alerted.

If your game-forcing raise of a major-suit opener is 2NT, you must Alert.

Note that when you Alert a call, if an opponent asks about it, you should respond by

giving the details of the agreement, not simply the name.

As for calls that require Announcements, they are listed in blue on the convention card. An example is the opening bid of 1NT. When partner opens 1NT, you must state the range of the bid. Most pairs agree that a 1NT opener shows a balanced hand with 15-17 HCP. When partner opens 1NT, you say only, “Fifteen to seventeen.”

Another common bid requiring an Announcement is the agreement that a 1NT response to a major-suit opening is forcing for one round. In that case, you say only one word: “Forcing.”

If you play transfers to major suits over 1NT and 2NT openings, again you say only “transfer” when partner’s response to your 1NT opener is 2♦ (transfer to hearts) or 2♥ (transfer to spades).

Anything not listed in red or blue requires neither an Alert nor an Announcement.

Tomorrow: more on duplicate practices.

West’s opening lead, East plays the ♣2, attitude, and you correctly play low, hoping West continues

the suit, No luck. West has played this game before

and knows you have the ♣A J. At trick two, he shifts to a low diamond. What is your play? Would it be different if you were playing in a pairs game? Hearts are 2-2.

First of all, at IMP scoring, making your contract is your first priority and you can insure this one by rising with the ♦A, removing trumps and driving out the ♠A. Say East wins and, too late, leads a club. Win the ace, discard the ♣J on a third-round spade winner, and concede a diamond to the king. Making four.

At matchpoints, if you are willing to risk your contract for an overtrick by taking the diamond finesse, go for it. However, you must consider whether the average West player would lead a diamond from the king looking at those diamonds in dummy. Probably not. Bottom line: If West is an expert and you need a big score, take the finesse. If West is not an expert, take the money and run. Go up with the ♦A.

If you are West, it is safer to switch to a

diamond at trick two than a spade even if you have the ♦K! As far as diamonds go, declarer can always take the finesse, so you aren’t risking anything. But spades is a different story. In spades you can’t see the queen. It is dangerous to lead a suit when dummy has the A-J-10-(x) or K-J-10-(x). If partner has the queen and declarer the missing king or ace, your partner’s queen is now history, but you have made a friend of declarer for life. ♠ K J 10 ♥ K 9 8 6 ♦ A Q J ♣ 5 4 3 ♠ 7 6 5 2 ♠ A 9 8 3 ♥ 3 2 ♥ 10 4 ♦ 10 6 2 ♦ K 9 8 4 ♣ K Q 10 9 ♣ 8 7 2 ♠ Q 4 ♥ A Q J 7 5 ♦ 7 5 3 ♣ A J 6

Some people have an extreme sensitivity to fragrances (colognes or perfumes). Many ACBL clubs, units and districts have adopted policies that prohibit players from wearing fragrances. The ACBL has not issued an official policy on the matter, preferring instead to appeal to the goodwill of its members to refrain from using fragrances.

Because duplicate bridge requires players to be in close proximity to each other, individuals who suffer from fragrance-related reactions cannot avoid those who are wearing them. Among

the commonly reported symptoms are intense headaches (indeed, fragrances can frequently be a trigger for migraine sufferers) or breathing-related problems. For these individuals, the issue is much more serious than simply disliking a particular smell — it’s a real health problem.

The ACBL asks everyone to give this issue the consideration it deserves. Please, if you’re going to play in a club or a tournament, don’t wear cologne, perfume or scented lotions.

Please be scent-sitive!

long list of conventions she hopes he will learn. Michael, who directs engineering for a company that makes research instruments for scientists, isn’t so sure about that.

His participation in the game, he says, occurred largely because “I got pulled along with the current.”

Michael played in his first newcomer game on Friday and discovered that “one of my favorite things about bridge is that they can’t tell me what they think during the hand.”

Florence is delighted with her children’s interest in the game, aided by weekly bridge games with the Yoshikawas. Both her children, Florence says, “are good at math, and playing bridge keeps their minds active. Their brains are very agile. I am so happy they are playing.”

Sarah says a big part of the appeal of bridge for her is that “there’s always a way to do it better.”

Florence says her parents usually try, mostly with success, to extend the Thursday bridge games with their grandchildren, daughter and son-in-law, and they’re excited at the family’s interest in the game. Says Tad: “We are glad they like to see us.”

Use of the bidding box –Alerts and Announcements

When using bidding boxes, the ACBL requires that players tap the Alert strip and say “Alert” at the same time. When making an Announcement, use the Announcement word (such as “transfer”) and tap the Alert strip at the same time. A player who Alerts or Announces a

bid must make sure his opponents are aware that an Alert or Announcement has been made.

Golder NAP Flight B begins play today

Competition begins today in the Golder North American Pairs, Flight B — a grassroots event limited to players with 0–2500 masterpoints.

The first stage is conducted at the local club level and qualifiers advance to unit competition. Those qualifiers then advance to the district finals where three pairs — more, depending upon attendance — qualify for the North American final.

Winners are honored by the Golder Cup and will also receive a certificate of recognition.

The trophy is presented in memory of Benjamin M. Golder (1894–1946) of Philadelphia, who died the day before the close of his term as 1946 ACBL president. He was named ACBL Honorary Member of the Year for 1947.Previous winners:1992 Peter Worley, Kevin Young1993 Robert Sewell, Paul Janicki1994 Brendan Dempsey, Ian Crowe1995 Jay Levy, William Rushmore1996 Robert Johnson, David Rosenstein1997 Bill Drewett, Kirk Twiss1998 Adam Beneschan, Brian Gilbert1999 Andy Kaufman, Greg Burch2000 Hal Hindman, Mark Chen2001 Walter Lee, Jonathan Weinstein2002 Wieslaw Kalita, Marian Krasowski2003 Jordan Chodorow, Harvey Katz2004 Jim Alison, Dayn Beam2005 Pete Whipple, Jamie Radcliffe2006 Fletcher Thompson, Bruce Todd2007 Mark Golding, Rob Kitchen2008 Sidney Kanter, Ron Nelken2009 Robert McCaw, Lewis Gamerman2010 Fred Schenker, Dian Petrov2011 Roger Webb, Philippe Galaski2012 Joseph Rice, Bjorgvin Kristinsson2013 Daniel Jackson, Bill McCarty2014 Miroslav Kovacevic, Aleksandar Vujic2015 Richard Jeng, Andrew Jeng

Handle with careBy Barry Rigal

Some plays are straightforward enough that Daily Bulletin readers will think no one would fall into the trap outlined. This deal from the second qualifying session of the Kay Platinum Pairs is a case in point. Dlr: East ♠ 9 4 Vul: Both ♥ K ♦ A K 10 8 6 ♣ K Q 8 7 6 ♠ A 8 5 2 ♠ K Q J 10 7 3 ♥ A Q 6 4 2 ♥ 8 5 3 ♦ 7 ♦ J 9 3 ♣ 10 5 4 ♣ A ♠ 6 ♥ J 10 9 7 ♦ Q 5 4 2 ♣ J 9 3 2 West North East South 1♠ Pass 3NT 4NT Pass 5♣ All Pass

West’s 3NT showed a spade raise with an unspecified singleton. North’s 4NT showed 5-5 or better in the minors.

The defense led clubs. Glenn Milgrim won and drew trumps, noting that North had two, hence at most a singleton heart. It was very straightforward to lead a heart to the ace now. Even if the king didn’t drop, declarer could return to hand and lead a heart towards the queen to ensure the 11th trick.

Plus 650 was a 60% result. A sizeable percentage of the North-South field sacrificed in five of a minor and exposed themselves to a penalty of minus 800, though by no means did all the field take advantage of the opportunity. A quick look at the results showed that quite a few declarers ended up with only 10 tricks in spades.

The good, the bad and the ugly

By Barry RigalDavid Grainger, North, demonstrated the good

on this deal from the second qualifying session of the Kay Platinum Pairs. Dlr: East ♠ A Q 6 5 Vul: Both ♥ K Q 8 7 6 5 ♦ 6 4 3 ♣ — ♠ 9 8 7 4 ♠ J 10 2 ♥ A J 10 4 ♥ 3 ♦ Q J 5 ♦ K 10 9 ♣ 8 7 ♣ A K 10 6 3 2 ♠ K 3 ♥ 9 2 ♦ A 8 7 2 ♣ Q J 9 5 4 West North East South 1♣ Pass 1♥ 2♥ Pass 4♥ Dbl All Pass

After the normal top club lead (two rounds of hearts is the killer), Grainger ruffed and read clubs as 6-2. He decided to play his right-hand opponent for 4=4=3=2 shape. So, club ruff, ♠K, club ruff, ♠A, ♠Q, spade ruff, East’s ♥3 forcing dummy’s 9. Then came the third club ruff as West discarded. If West ruffs with the ♥10, Grainger discards a diamond and later finesses in hearts. After the club ruff, a diamond to the ace and a fourth club ensured that declarer would score two more trump tricks.

At our table, the deal was a case of largesse distributed to all and sundry. West North East South 1♣ Pass 1♦ Pass 2♣ Pass Pass Dbl (!) All Pass

West’s 1♦ bid showed four or more hearts. You might think North was off his head to double at his second turn rather than bid hearts. I couldn’t possibly comment, but I will say that if partner has five tricks in his hand the double has something to recommend it.

On the lead of the ♥9, declarer won and played a trump. North, who had encouraged at trick one, played the ♥8. When South won the ♦A, he mistakenly played a second heart. Declarer could ruff and cash his diamonds then exit with a spade. This was the position: ♠ A Q 6 ♥ K 7 6 ♦ — ♣ — ♠ 9 8 7 ♠ J 2 ♥ J 4 ♥ — ♦ — ♦ — ♣ 7 ♣ A 10 6 3 ♠ 3 ♥ — ♦ 8 ♣ Q J 9 5

South was on lead, the defense having won two tricks. He played the ♣Q and declarer won to exit in spades and collect one more trump trick.

After the heart lead, maybe North should not discourage (either partner has no more or declarer can ruff).

If South wins the ♦A to play the ♠K and another spade, South can discard his heart loser and ensure three trump tricks for his side and plus 500.

Aries March 21-April 19You’re a take-charge person. You work hard, live hard and play hard, and you like to be out in front. Sometimes you lead when you should be following. In bridge that’s called a lead out of turn. It’s time to check your ego. Call a higher authority – the director – and do what he says.Famous Aries: Thomas Jefferson, Lady Gaga, Larry Cohen, Peyton Manning, Alfredo Versace

Taurus April 20-May 20As a bridge bull, you look for stability in your partnerships. Besides being stubborn beyond belief, you’re a deliberate thinker. Not only do you make your opponents wait for your decisions, but your decisions are invariably right (which endears you to no one but your teammates). A Taurus playing with another Taurus? Frighteningly Meckwellian!Famous Taureans: Mark Zuckerberg, Eric Rodwell, Adele, Jeff Meckstroth

Gemini May 21-June 20Your chatty nature compels you to keep bidding long after the auction should have died. And then you get doubled and your partner, who trusts and adores you, believes you, and redoubles for business and down you go again. For the love of all that’s holy, shut up and pass already!Famous Gemini: Jack Kevorkian, Janice Seamon-Molson, Wild Bill Hickock, Marilyn Monroe

Leo July 23-Aug 22You rule the table with majesty. You set the rhythm, you call the shots. This young gun has to be put in his place. Show him you mean business when you double. And hope partner has the goods to set him!Famous Leos: Barack Obama, Kerri Sanborn, Tom Brady, Davy Crockett, Bob Hamman, Jennifer Lawrence

Virgo Aug. 23-Sept. 22Nothing can unsettle you. Except maybe this hand. While you don’t have a classic notrump opener, sometimes you have to make the least bad bid. Live a little! The chances are pretty good that you’ll be playing the hand anyway, and maybe nobody will notice how very unbalanced you really are.Famous Virgos: Sean Connery, Warren Buffet, Queen Elizabeth I, Gavin Wolpert, Beyonce

Libra Sept. 23-Oct. 22Life is a balancing act and you’re all about balance. The opponents are onto your propensity to overbalance, however, and like to lie in wait with their red cards. Sometimes letting them try their hand at 2♥ really is OK. All we are saying is give pass a chance.Famous Librans: John Lennon, Alfred Nobel, Paul Soloway, Serena Williams, Ma Barker, Justin Lall

Scorpio Oct. 23-Nov. 21Invite aggressively, accept aggressively – that’s a confirmed Scorpio at work in Kit’s Korner. Combative and reflective, passionate and exacting, you love extremes … there’s never a dull moment when you’re at the table. Tip: Brush up on your exclusion Blackwood. It’ll play a pivotal role in the week ahead.Famous Scorpios: Bill Gates, Martin Luther, Eddie Kantar, Indira Gandhi, John Kranyak

Sagittarius Nov. 22-Dec. 21You adventurous little goat! You reversed into a two-card spade suit and now partner is the one climbing ever higher. Partner is used to your creative ways, but don’t try to pin this one on him if it doesn’t work out. At some point he’ll get the joke and let you off the hook, but how high?Famous Sagittarians: George Custer, Steven Spielberg, David Berkowitz, Taylor Swift, Peter Boyd

Capricorn Dec. 22-Jan. 19Today’s tip: The stars are aligned, Saturn is smiling and all signs point to a big win. 6♦ will be your lucky contract. If you think that’s enough to classify Six Diamonds Always Makes as a convention, though, think again. Don’t look now -- Saturn is laughing at you.Famous Capricorns: LeBron James, Al Capone, J. Edgar Hoover, Bart Bramley

Aquarius Jan. 20–Feb. 18Yeah, we know the moon is in the seventh house, but we also know your partner opened 2♥ in third seat – at favor-able, no less – and that his hand is a dumpster fire. Jupiter may align with Mars, but if you make a “competitive raise,” the opponents’ penalty double will knock you to Pluto. Pass, you fool.Famous Aquarians: Ronald Reagan, Rosa Parks, Jill Meyers, Thomas Edison

Pisces Feb. 19-March 20Pisces: old souls. Tired old souls. Tired of the disappointing dummies that partner displays, tired of bitter postmortems where nothing is learned, tired of getting fixed on every board by opponents who have no idea what they’re doing. Death is coming soon, Pisces, to offer sweet release.Famous Fish: George Washington, Justin Bieber, Michael Rosenberg, Ruth Bader Ginsburg

Cancer June 21-July 22Lost, so lost. So, so very lost! You sidled sideways like a crab rather than straight forward and now the auction has gone off the rails in spectacular fashion. Close your eyes, pull out the green card (you’ll know it by feel -- it’s the one that’s never been used) and play it quick before you end up in 7NT doubled.Famous Crabs: Amelia Earhart, Joe Grue, PT Barnum, Ely Culbertson

The search for the overtrick

By Barry Rigal Dlr: South ♠ J 8 7 6 2 Vul: N-S ♥ K 9 5 ♦ 10 8 6 ♣ A K ♠ Q 10 9 4 ♥ A J 8 7 2 ♦ Q 2 ♣ 10 9 West North East South Pass 1♣ 1♠ Dbl Pass 1NT All Pass

You, North, lead a spade, won in dummy as South discards the ♣2, calling for a diamond. You are in with the ♣K at trick two.

You play the ♦6: queen, king, 4. Back comes the ♦7: 5 . . . over to you.

The full deal should be an open book. If you win and clear diamonds, declarer has four spades, one heart, one diamond and two clubs for plus 120.

When South shifts to the low diamond, he can’t be able to run diamonds. You have two tricks each in diamonds and clubs already in the bank. Instead of dreaming that partner has an entry, shift to the ♥K in case declarer has a singleton ♥Q or ♥10.

When the ♥K holds, play a second heart and you have six tricks on defense. It may be only an overtrick, but the difference in matchpoints is significant. Minus 120 gets you 17 out of 50 (34%). Minus 90 is good for 29.5 (59%).

Out of luckBy Barry Rigal

You know you are out of luck when you set up the opponents for a 75% endplay and find you’ve located the only line to go down. Dlr: South ♠ A Q 9 4 Vul: Both ♥ K ♦ Q 10 8 6 5 3 ♣ Q J ♠ J ♠ 7 3 2 ♥ 10 8 5 4 3 ♥ A J 9 7 6 ♦ J 9 ♦ A K ♣ A 10 9 7 5 ♣ K 8 4 ♠ K 10 8 6 5 ♥ Q 2 ♦ 7 4 2 ♣ 6 3 2 West North East South Goren Rigal Padon Milgrim Pass Pass 1♦ 1♥ Dbl 4♣ 4♠ 5♦ Pass 5♥ All Pass

Glenn Milgrim and I played this board against Barry Goren and Dror Padon. A spade to the ace and a diamond shift let Padon win, cash the ♥A then strip off spades and diamonds and exit in hearts.

When South won the ♥Q to lead a low club, declarer finessed twice – the odds play, of course – and ran into the one lie of the cards that would defeat him. This seemed very unlikely to me. With North almost known to be 6-4, only the ♣Q J doubleton is the losing position.

If you want to ruff something. . .

By Barry RigalThe rest of the quote is, “Don’t draw trump!”This adage has irritated countless partners of

mine. The response – “But I drew only one round!” – is generally met with the scorn and derision it deserves. Dlr: West ♠ J 5 2 Vul: None ♥ Q 5 4 2 ♦ K J 6 2 ♣ 10 6 ♠ K 8 4 ♠ A Q 10 9 7 3 ♥ A 7 ♥ 10 9 3 ♦ Q 10 7 5 4 ♦ 9 ♣ K 5 3 ♣ A Q 4 ♠ 6 ♥ K J 8 6 ♦ A 8 3 ♣ J 9 8 7 2

On this deal from the second qualifying session of the Kay Platinum Pairs, most East-West pairs played 4♠. At our table, West declared 4♠ on the lead of the ♣10 (Rusinow: showing the jack or shortness).

At teams, you would claim 10 tricks and move on. At pairs, what is the safest line for the overtrick?

If you duck a heart the opponents might take two club ruffs and beat you if clubs are 6-1.

As declarer discovered, if you draw one trump and duck a heart, a club back scrambles the entries. Now after taking the heart ruff you can no longer draw trumps safely.

The safest line for the overtrick might be to play a low diamond at trick two. After all, if the ♦A and ♦K come down, you might make six!

Even if diamonds break 5-2, you have cut the defensive communications for the two ruffs, so 10 tricks at least are safe.

Audrey Grant’s Modern Techniques for

Bridge TeachersAudrey Grant will offer a special continuing

education opportunity for teachers at a breakfast on Sunday, March 13 at 8 a.m. The seminar will be held in Baron CDE, located on the mezzanine level of the Silver Legacy. A $20 fee covers the textbook and seminar. The breakfast is sponsored by Baron Barclay Bridge Supply.

When it comes to teaching bridge, Grant is a household name. For decades, she has taught students, teachers and club owners across the world. Her hands-on approach and creative use of the table, cards and bid boxes has helped keep students engaged, excited and focused. Grant will share her teaching techniques in this hour-and-a-half seminar for bridge teachers.

Following the seminar, you may attend Grant’s free two-hour bridge lesson and observe her techniques at work. See how she leaves students eager to learn more!

For more information about Grant, visit her website: www.betterbridge.com

Please be on your best behavior.

The ACBL wants you to know that Zero Tolerance is in effect at this tournament.

You are expected to treat your partner and opponents with respect and a friendly demeanor. As the ZT policy dictates, rude behavior will not be tolerated.

If a player at the table behaves in an unacceptable manner, the director should be called immediately. The director may assess an immediate ¼ board disciplinary penalty (3 IMPs in team games). If both members of a partnership are guilty, the penalties are additive (¼ board per player = ½ board). A second offense in the same event may result in ejection.

The ultimate purpose of the ZT policy is to create a much more pleasant atmosphere in our NABCs and a more enjoyable bridge experience for everyone.

Goodbye, queenBy Rob Brady

This deal from the first qualifying session of the Kay Platinum Pairs presented an unusual opportunity for me and my partner, Ari Greenberg. Dlr: West ♠ K 9 Vul: Both ♥ A 7 6 ♦ K 8 5 ♣ A 9 7 6 2 ♠ Q 8 6 4 3 ♠ A J 2 ♥ 3 ♥ Q J 10 8 5 2 ♦ J 9 4 3 ♦ 6 ♣ 8 4 3 ♣ Q J 10 ♠ 10 7 5 ♥ K 9 4 ♦ A Q 10 7 2 ♣ K 5 West North East South Ari Me Pass 1♣ 1♥ 2♦ Pass 2NT Pass 3NT All Pass

Declarer’s line of play was not good. It was the end position that was most interesting about the deal.

I led the ♥Q, taken by declarer in dummy. He then cashed the ♦A and played a diamond to his king (I discarded the ♠2). Declarer then led a club, playing low from dummy when I played the queen. I played another heart, which declarer won in hand. He played a club to dummy’s king and exited with a heart.

On the run of the hearts, this was the position with nine tricks played: ♠ K 9 ♥ — ♦ 8 ♣ A ♠ Q ♠ A J ♥ — ♥ 5 ♦ J 9 ♦ — ♣ 8 ♣10 ♠ 10 7 ♥ — ♦ Q 10 ♣ —

At trick 10, I cashed my last heart. Dummy pitched a spade and Ari pitched a club. Declarer couldn’t afford a spade or a club, so he discarded a diamond. I led a club to put declarer in his hand. On this trick, Ari threw his spade queen, allowing me to claim the last two tricks with the ♠A J. Ari’s discard of the spade honor was similar to a position reached by declarer when he plays a squeeze card and must discard a blocking card from the other hand. It is known as a jettison squeeze.

Had Ari not discarded his spade honor, declarer could win with the ♣A and exit with his low spade. I would have to play the jack but Ari would have overtaken perforce with only diamonds left to play. Declarer would have won trick 13 for two down. Thanks to Ari’s play, we took the rest of the tricks for three down and 48.5 out of 50 matchpoints.

Slow PlaySlow play, especially habitual slow play, is a

violation of law and subject to penalty. When a pair has fallen behind, it is incumbent on them to make up the time lost as quickly as possible whether at fault or not. All players are expected to make a concerted effort to catch up when they have fallen behind, regardless of the reason for their lateness.

In the absence of compelling evidence to the contrary, the director should presume that a pair finishing a round late by more than two or three minutes on more than one occasion during a session is responsible for the lateness. There is a strong expectation that the director will penalize such a pair. The size of a penalty will tend to increase for subsequent instances of slow play and for chronic or egregious slow play.

Runners-up in the 0-10K Swiss Teams: seated, Diyan Danailov and Jerry Stamatov; standing, Jan Zadroga and Daniel Williams. Team captain Hannah Moon was not available for the photo.

Runners-up in the Lebhar IMP Pairs: Arthur Crystal and Curtis Cheek.

While warnings typically will be given before a penalty is assessed, failure to do so in no way limits the director’s authority to issue a penalty.

Players are expected to be aware, in a general sense, of time used and remaining in a segment in which they are playing regardless of whether a clock is in use or a time announcement has been made. An excuse of “no announcement” or “no clock immediately visible” will not be considered persuasive.

In consultation with the DIC of the tournament, the TD may require that a particular pair not play in a specified segment, not play against a specified pair or not play together as a pair. The foregoing is expected to be applied only due to egregious circumstances or to unduly repetitious offenders.

An appeal of an action taken by a TD with regard to time may be taken to the Director in

Charge of the tournament, and no further. For NABC+ KO events, the TD is charged with the responsibility to ensure that each KO match segment finishes within the allotted time. While a time monitor may be employed, the lack of a monitor in no way limits the TD’s authority to apply one or more of the remedies listed below.

The TD may choose to ignore an occasional minor late finish. The TD may remove one or more boards from a segment. The TD may award no score (when neither team is more at fault), an assigned score (when a result already exists at one table which the TD wishes to preserve) or an artificial score in IMPs. Every effort should be made to remove boards before they can be played at either table, but not having done so does not preclude removing one or more later.
