New Orleans has produced many a fine bridge player over the years, but the city’s “iconic player,” says John Onstott, is Sidney Lazard. Lazard’s legend extends much farther than New Orleans, however: A swaggering, riverboat gamblin’, irascible artist at the table, Lazard is on the short list of the best and most colorful who ever played the game.

Lazard was born in New Orleans in 1930 and lived here for 71 years before moving to Dallas. His father taught him many card games, but it was draw poker that caught the kid’s fancy.

“My father, Jules, was a terrific card player and athlete, but his father – my grandfather Joe – some thought he was the best card player in the country.” He adds, “My other grandfather was a genius, but a lousy card player.”

Lazard’s cousins were responsible for teaching

him bridge when he was 15. He discovered duplicate a couple years later. “I was hooked right away,” Lazard says. He attended his first NABC in 1948.

When he was 18 or 19, “the bulb went on.” He describes the awakening: “One day,

Two years ago at the Spring NABC in Dallas, Juanita Chambers sat down to play in a side game with David Page of Plano TX. Although Chambers has won

18 North American championships and three world titles, she was nervous. It was her first bridge

To the joy of many contemporaries who missed her flair and her expertise, Chambers is back. She was playing on Saturday in the Machlin Women’s Swiss Teams, and she has plans for a return to high-level competition.

Chambers’ descent was quick, her recovery long, but she is convinced that her demons are banished for good.

“I used to go to the bar,” says Chambers, 58. “Now I go to church.”

Masterpoint disclaimerScores as reported in the Daily Bulletin are

subject to change because of score changes or corrections. The masterpoint awards as shown are, therefore, also subject to change.

Electronic Device Policy The electronic device policy at NABCs allows

players to bring electronic devices such as cell phones into the playing area provided that such devices are turned off.

Further, any such equipment must not be visible during the session

The policy applies to all pairs, team members,

captains, coaches, kibitzers and play recorders, except those designated by the ACBL and are in force throughout any actual playing session or segment of play.

A violation of the policy will result in an automatic disciplinary penalty of one full board (or 12 IMPs at that form of scoring) for the first offense. A second offense will result in disqualification from the event for the pair/team. Kibitzers violating this policy will be removed from the playing area for the remainder of the session.

IllusionOn this deal from the first final session of

the Silodor Open Pairs, Shan Huang created an illusion for declarer that led to a fine score for the defenders. Huang, of Toronto, was playing with David Sabourin of Ottawa. The deal was reported by Sylvia Shi of Rockville MD. Dlr: West ♠ 9 8 6 4 3 Vul: Both ♥ K 5 2 ♦ J 9 ♣ J 3 2 ♠ Q 2 ♠ A 10 5 ♥ Q 7 4 ♥ J 10 9 8 6 ♦ 8 7 6 2 ♦ K Q 3 ♣ Q 10 7 4 ♣ 6 5 ♠ K J 7 ♥ A 3 ♦ A 10 5 4 ♣ A K 9 8 West North East South Sabourin Huang Pass Pass 1♥ Dbl 2♥ 2♠ Pass 3♥ Pass 3♠ Pass 4♠ All Pass

Huang led the ♥J, taken by declarer in hand. North played the ♦J at trick two: queen, ace, 2. A diamond went to declarer’s 9 and Huang’s king, and he exited with a heart to dummy’s ace.

Eager to get to hand to play a spade up, declarer ruffed dummy’s low diamond, then led a spade to the king. On the ♦10, declarer discarded one of his clubs. Huang could have ruffed with the ♠10, but figured his partner had the doubleton ♠Q, so he knew his ace and Sabourin’s queen would crash together on the next round of the suit.

Instead of ruffing with the ♠10, Huang ruffed with his ace, creating the illusion that West started with Q-10-2. In that case, playing another trump would end declarer’s chances for a heart ruff.

After ruffing with the trump ace, Huang got out with a club, taken by the ace in dummy. Declarer then cashed the ♣K and ruffed a club. Imagine declarer’s shock when Huang overruffed with the 10 that was supposed to be in the West had. With the trump queen still to come, Huang and Sabourin recorded plus 100 on a deal where most East-West pairs ended up minus 620.

Waiting for the bellBy Barry Rigal

In the round of 16 in the Vanderbilt Knockout Teams, Sabine Auken found a call that generated a pile of IMPs for her side without having to hear the bell go off. Dlr: East ♠ A Q 7 2 Vul: N-S ♥ A Q J 8 5 3 ♦ J 5 2 ♣ — ♠ 9 6 ♠ 8 ♥ K 10 ♥ 7 6 4 ♦ 8 6 4 3 ♦ A K 5 ♣ A K 10 7 3 ♣ Q J 9 8 6 4 ♠ K J 10 6 4 3 ♥ 9 2 ♦ Q 10 ♣ 5 2 West North East South 1♣ 1♠ 2♠ 4♣ 4♦ Pass 4♥ Dbl 5♣ Pass Pass 5♠ 6♣ Pass Pass 6♠ Pass Pass Dbl All Pass

Without the 4♦ bid by Auken, Roy Welland might have got the opening lead wrong.

After her intelligent lead-directing action, the diamond lead was a formaility. Down one for plus 200 to East-West.

In the other room, North-South were allowed to play in game in spades, so the clever bid by Auken created a double-digit swing instead of a big loss. On any lead but a diamond, declarer was going to make 6 S* doubled for plus 1660. In a match that the Martin Fleisher team won by 18 IMPs, this board turned out to be critical.

JUST FOR NEW PLAYERSGetting the most from

your conventions – part 9 By Brent Manley

You should play bridge for fun. The instant you find yourself playing the game for any other reason, you should rack it up and go on to something else.

— Charles Goren

In the previous column, you read about cuebids that can help increase your bidding efficiency, namely strength-showing and control-showing bids. That just scratches the surface of this excellent bidding tool.

One strength-showing cuebid not discussed previously occurs when partner opens the bidding and the next player overcalls, as in this example: West North East South 1♥ 1♠ ?

You are South. Suppose your hand is ♠K 5 ♥A J 6 4 ♦Q 10 7 5 ♣6 3 2

With a pass by East, you would show limit raise in hearts according to your partnership agreements. If East passes, you might bid 3♥ to show 10-11 support points. When there is an intervening overcall, your jump raise should show a weak hand, perhaps♠10 7 ♥Q J 8 7 ♦K 7 6 5 4 ♣4 3.

The opponents probably have the balance of power, so you want to take away their bidding space.

A simple raise to 2♥ with the stronger hand is out of the question, so what do you do? With that hand, your call is 2♠, a cuebid showing a limit raise or better (you are an unpassed hand, after all) in hearts. You will, of course, respect partner’s decision if he signs off in 3♥.

The cuebid raise won’t always deliver four-card trump support – and the more balanced your hand the more important it is for your

values to be in high cards. Here’s another nifty trick

with cuebids. Say your right-hand opponent opens 1♥ and you hold ♠A Q 4 ♥7 6 ♦A K J 10 5 4 ♣J 7

You overcall 2♦, LHO passes and partner raises to 3♦. Now what?

A contract of 5♦ should not be on your radar, but the nine-trick game of 3NT is eminently reasonable. All you lack is a stopper in hearts. So how do you find out if partner has a heart control? Easy: Just bid 3♥, a cuebid asking partner if he can stop hearts. Do not confuse this with a control-showing cuebid. If you could stop hearts yourself, your bid would be 3NT, not 3♥.

Check out this cuebid:West North East South 1♠ 3♠Pass ?

You are North. Do you have any idea what South is doing with his jump in the opponent’s suit?

This is another cuebid that is asking rather than telling. South should have a hand such as♠7 ♥A 5 4 ♦Q 2 ♣A K Q 9 8 6 3

If North has the ♠A or some other stopper – maybe K-J-x or Q J 10 – he would be unlucky not to take nine tricks via seven clubs and two aces. With a spade stopper, North must bid 3NT.

Sometimes a cuebid doesn’t specify anything other than strength. Consider this auction: West North East South 1♣ 1♥ 1♠ Pass 2♥

All North knows at this point is that South has a hand strong enough to force game. North should make a bid that best describes his hand. South might have cuebid with a hand such as♠ A Q 8 6 ♥ 4 2 ♦A 10 7 ♣A K Q 5 .

South is clearly interested in slam, but North doesn’t know that. South might have cuebid with

Thinking bridgeBy Eddie Kantar

Using the bidding as a guide to play and defense

Dlr: South ♠ K 6 Vul: E-W ♥ A 10 7 ♦ A 7 6 3 2 ♣ 10 5 3 ♠ A J 10 9 4 3 2 ♠ 8 5 ♥ 8 6 5 4 ♥ 9 ♦ K ♦ 10 9 8 ♣ J ♣ A Q 9 8 6 4 2 ♠ Q 7 ♥ K Q J 3 2 ♦ Q J 5 4 ♣ K 7 West North East South 1♥ 3♠ 4♥ All Pass

Opening lead: ♣JBidding commentary: The 3♠ overcall is

♠A 2 ♥7 5 ♦A J 8 ♣A K Q J 5 4, in which case he would be looking for a heart stopper for 3NT. With the first hand, if North bids 3NT, South will bid 4♠, which is probably a better contract than 3NT. The fact that North has heart strength opposite heart shortness cools South’s interest in slam. This is known as “wasted values.”

With the second, South will pass 3NT and expect his partner to make it.

what you would have for an opening 3 ♠: long suit, weak hand.

Defensive commentary: As East, win the ♣A and return the ♣9 asking for a spade return.

You can’t stand a diamond shift so ask for a spade, the lesser of evils. As West, after ruffing the club return, play the ♠A and a spade.

Play commentary: You have to bring in the diamonds for no losers. Given that you have no intermediates in diamonds, you have two chances: (1) The ♦K is singleton; (2) West has K-x.

Counting time: You know East has seven clubs and two spades, so once you draw trumps, you will know the diamond division. Conversely, you know West has seven spades and one club, so counting the trumps in one hand or the other will immediately tell you the diamond division. Let’s say you decided to work with clubs. When East shows up with one heart, he must have three diamonds (seven clubs, one heart, two spades = 10) so you must find West with the singleton ♦K. You’re in dummy after three rounds of trumps, so bang down the ♦A … and pray. Once again, the bidding plus counting has guided you in the play.

Tromso – way up north but worth the trip

The European Bridge League opened its summer championships to all comers for the first time in 2003 and has continued in odd-numbered years ever since. ACBL players have been a presence at the open tournaments from the inception.

The tournament features teams and pairs competitions in Mixed, Open, Women’s and Senior categories.

In 2013, on the initiative of EBL President Yves Aubry, the event has been broadened to include also daily side-events in order attract a wider range of players. This also provides alternative playing opportunities for non-qualifiers in the medal events.

The 2015 edition is scheduled for Tromso, Norway, from June 27 to July 11 for the Open Championships and July 18 to July 26 for the Youth Championships.

Aubry was in New Orleans to attend meetings of the World Bridge Federation – and to encourage players at the Spring NABC to consider a trip to the land of the midnight sun.

Aubry notes that Tromso, although situated in the far north of Norway, is accessible from a number of major cities. “It’s not hard to get there,” he says. There are daily, on-the-hour flights from Oslo, with direct flights from London, Paris, Stockholm, Munich and Murmansk.

The tournament venue is in the center of town and. Restaurants and shopping are within five to 10 minutes walking time. The drive from the Tromso airport to the city center takes seven minutes.

Aubry says affordable hotel rooms are plentiful, including some at $80 US per night. Rooms comparable to what’s available at the Marriott in New Orleans can be had for $120 US per night.

Aubry notes that Tromso sometimes is viewed as far away and expensive. “It is not so far,” he says, “and not so expensive.”

There are many tourist attractions in Tromso, including daily cruises and mini-cruises along the coast of the country, as far as the North Cape, the point where the Norwegian Sea, part of the Atlantic Ocean, meets the Barents Sea, part of the Arctic Ocean.

The midnight sun can be seen from mid-May to July 31. The sun reaches its lowest point from 12:14 – 12:24 a.m. during those days. There are other activities for those who might want to take time off from bridge, including fishing, golf and cable-car rides. Car rentals are not expensive for those who like to explore on their own time schedules.

For more information about the tournament and activities in the area, visit

www.tromso2015.no and www.eurobridge.org.

Chambers

Chambers, whose late father was an Apache, was born Juanita Tah in Ponca City OK. Her father, an engineer, helped build power plants, so the family was constantly on the move. At Kentucky State University and Kilgore College, Chambers studied math – and played a lot of bridge.

She was in her early 20s when she discovered the game. She and a group of friends used a table cloth with Goren bidding rules on it. One of the group was the proud owner of an ACBL masterpoint. “He was our guru,” recalls Chambers.

When Chambers heard about duplicate, she headed for the local club. She and her partner came in dead last in her first duplicate game– and she was hooked. “I fell in love with it and I joined the ACBL on the spot.”

When she received her first issue of the Bridge Bulletin, Chambers read about a regional tournament in Amarillo, not far from where she lived at the time. At the regional, she met some pro players, found out people could actually make money playing the game, and soon moved to Dallas. One of her early mentors was Hemant Lall, a rising star who is still a highly regarded player.

At the first regional she attended in Dallas, she found herself sitting at the table against the legendary Oswald Jacoby. “It was so exciting,” she says. “In those days bridge was romantic and very social.”

It wasn’t long before Kerri Sanborn (Shuman at the time) caught Chambers’ attention. Chambers was impressed with Sanborn’s integrity and demeanor at the table. “I wanted to grow up to be like Kerri,” Chambers says.

Another star who helped Chambers develop was the late Mike Smolen. “He had a big impact on my game.” She and Smolen won the national Mixed Pairs in Cincinnati in 1979.

Chambers, then Juanita Skelton (from a previous marriage) met Neil Chambers at a tournament and married him in 1983.

“I had everything,” she says. “A beautiful family, success at bridge and I was making money.”

In 2001, the pressure she had been feeling reached its peak. “I forgot why I played – because I loved the game. I lost track of everything important in my life. I forgot my family . . . everything.”

That year, Chambers had been hired to play on a top team, but she was so messed up from alcohol and drugs that she didn’t even go to the tournament.

“It was terrible,” she remembers. “You couldn’t count on me anymore. Ugly things happened and it got worse and worse.” She wanted to change but she couldn’t. “I was constantly failing,” she says.

Chambers went from a comfortable lifestyle to selling off her possessions to buy drugs. “I ended up losing everything,” she says. “I hardly had a change of clothes. You see things like this in the movies but I never imagined it could happen to a person.”

Her chance to turn things around happened in 2009. She was arrested for possession of cocaine and was in jail in Boca Raton FL. She called her brother, Ed Barganier, for help. He went to Boca Raton and persuaded a judge to release Chambers. The judge agreed, telling her, “Go get some help.”

When they got to her brother’s hometown – Garland TX, where they both live now – Chambers thought she was going to move in with his family.

Instead, she remembers, “He said, ‘You’re going to rehab’.”

Chambers spent a year at a residential facility kicking her habits, and she did so well that she stayed on for another two years as a counselor for women with trouble just like hers.

She knew things were changing for her when “I started liking being sober – and I missed my family.”

As things got better, Chambers started getting the itch to play bridge again. By the end of 2012,

that being sneaky can pay off. The perpetrator was Burrell Ives Humphreys, a former prosecutor and judge and now an attorney from Wayne NJ. He was South.

Humpreys noted, “I was probably the only person in the event who could bid 2♣ naturally.” The takeout double by West helped his side get to the shaky spade game.

Humphreys started with the top clubs before switching to a low heart. Declarer, suspecting that

Humphrey was underleading the ace without the queen, put up the king and could not avoid two heart losers (he gets only two pitches on diamonds) for down one.

Declarer clearly was worried about North’s holding a doubleton ♥Q, in which case playing the jack would result in his losing the ♥Q, ♥A and a heart ruff. To make the contract, declarer needed for Humphreys to have the heart holding he actually had. At pairs, of course, the difference between one down and two down could make a big difference in matchpoints.

Use of the Bidding Box — Alerts and Announcements

When using bidding boxes, the ACBL requires that players tap the Alert strip and say “Alert” at the same time.

When making an Announcement, use the Announcement word (such as “transfer”) and tap the Alert strip at the same time.

A player who Alerts or Announces a bid must make sure his opponents are aware that an Alert or Announcement has been made.

Lazard

I suddenly had it. I would call it a ‘relaxation of mind’ to achieve ‘clarity.’”

In an interview published in The Bridge World in July 2011, Lazard talks about his early playing days at Tulane. “I played with Ronny Dreyfus, Noel Duvic, Joe Jabon and Harold Rockaway,” he says. “I also played with John Fisher, who was at LSU Medical School. Fisher told me: ‘If you’d taught me bridge one year earlier, I’d never have become a doctor.’’

Lazard credits three mentors; the most important, he says, was New Orleans bridge great Louis Rosen. Another was Freddie Berger from Natchez. “Freddie’s the one who taught me how to bid. People question my bidding, so maybe he didn’t do such a good job.” (Howard Schenken once described Lazard as the fastest bidder and slowest player he had ever seen.)

The third mentor Lazard credits is John Gerber, with whom he played early in his career. “The two strengths of my game – defense and tactics – I learned from Gerber. Chances are that I wouldn’t be playing bridge today if it wasn’t for Gerber.”

Poker-faced ‘maniac’Lazard’s poker-playing father and grandfather

obviously had an impact on his style. “Ask people about me and they’ll say I’m a dangerous maniac. I learned from poker: Look loose and play tight.”

Famous for his table feel and ability to “read” opponents, Lazard again acknowledges his poker roots. “I’ve seen only one player who didn’t give away any tells: John Crawford,” he told The Bridge World . “Among modern players, possibly Jeff Meckstroth is in that category.”

Lazard won 13 NABC titles across six decades. He was on the second-place Bermuda Bowl team in 1959. He took world-championship bronze medals in the 1969 Bermuda Bowl and the Rosenblum Cup in 1959.

He captained the two Bermuda-Bowl winning Nickell teams – in Bermuda in 2000 and in Monte Carlo in 2003. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2000 and named ACBL’s Honorary Member of the Year in 2001. He participated on The Bridge World’s Master Solver’s Club panel for more than 50 years.

Lazard’s partners included all the stars of his era: George Rapee, Oswald and Jim Jacoby, Edgar Kaplan, Norman Kay, Bobby Wolff, Marshall Miles – Hall of Famers all. He played with New Orleans greats Julius Rosenblum, Jack LaNoue and John Onstott.

In the 1970s and 1980s, he played with his son, Sid Jr., and in later years, he won the Kaplan Blue Ribbon Pairs and the Reisinger Board-a-Match playing with Bart Bramley.

Side betsAs much a legacy as the titles and accolades,

however, are the stories Lazard tells about his pre-Zero-Tolerance era antics, and the tales others tell about him.

Sometimes there are players who just seem to have another player’s number and in 1963, Al Roth and the not-known-for-his-tact Tobias Stone had Lazard’s number.

He told The Bridge World the story: “I was playing in a National with Byron Greenberg. We were crushing every event, except that I kept self-destructing when we faced Roth and Stone. After the third such round, Roth rubbed it in by chastising Stone for not bidding a grand slam needing an onside king, saying ‘he (meaning me) had to have it for his weak two-bid.’ Stone responded: ‘Had to have it? This guy can’t read or write.’ So I grabbed a full ashtray and dumped it in Stone’s lap saying, “and I’m also very sloppy.”

Lazard calls John Crawford his toughest opponent. Lazard’s team was the underdog matched against Crawford’s team in the 1959

MonitoringAt this and future North American Bridge

Championships, ACBL will monitor NABC+ events with visible, real-time cameras. The images will be recorded and be available for later official inspection and review.

By general monitoring of the session and

participants’ behavior, ACBL has another source of information that may be useful in determining facts and settling issues arising from some types of ethical and behavioral complaints or actions. Please summon a director if a problem occurs at the table.

This procedure is intended to assure everyone that the playing field is level and that misbehavior will not be tolerated.

Lazard

Vanderbilt final. Crawford had just married into money and ignoring the presence of tournament director Al Sobel, he challenged Lazard: “Wanna bet on the match?”

Lazard didn’t want to take the bet, but he didn’t want his partner to think he lacked confidence in their team. So reluctantly, he agreed. “There’s my bet,” said Crawford, tossing a wad of cash totaling thousands on the table.

“I’ve been known to carry a few big stacks myself,” says Lazard, but that was too big, even for me. So I countered by grabbing Sobel’s lighter and setting the money on fire. Crawford singed his fingers putting out the flames.” Lazard says he’d like to report that his team won the match. But they didn’t.

A day at the racesLazard was in the oil business. He enjoyed

gambling even when he wasn’t wagering on a bridge outcome. Now-deceased Hall of Fame player Tommy Sanders posted this anecdote on Judy Kay Wolff’s blog in 2011:

“About 25 years ago, we found ourselves in New Orleans for New Year’s. It was the fourth or fifth day of January and the bridge tournament was over. I called up Sidney and we decided to go to the racetrack at the fairgrounds.

“After a few races, I noticed Sidney hadn’t made a bet. Upon inquiring about it, he said, “I just made a $10,000 do-or-don’t New Year’s bet with a friend that neither of us would gamble all year.”

“That being the case, Sidney, why did we come here today?”

He said, “I love it out here. These are my people – the characters, the touts, the smells, the atmosphere – I love ‘em all. And your companionship, I wouldn’t want to be any place else.”

By about the seventh race, I see him pouring over the racing form. So, I said, “Sidney, though I’m not doing that great, I know how to read the racing form. What are you doing that for?”

He said, “I’m looking for a $10,000 horse.”

True greatnessOne of the most prestigious tributes within the

modern bridge community is the Sidney H. Lazard Jr. Sportsmanship Award, established by Lazard Sr. in 2001. The annual award recognizes top players who try to win with class and dignity. Given Lazard’s notoriously colorful conduct at the bridge table, a sportsmanship award seems ironic. “When I was young,” he admits, “I had a well-deserved reputation as an enfant terrible.”

In 1999, Lazard’s beloved 41-year old son died from cancer. Lazard says that Sid Jr. was the nicest guy in the world and a great sportsman.

“I designed the award as a way to honor his memory by recognizing top bridge players who emulate the ideal that I saw in my son, and to encourage all players to aspire to that standard.”

Convention card reminderEach player is required to have a convention

card filled out legibly and on the table throughout a session. The convention card must include the first and last name of each member of the partnership, and the cards must be identical.

If a director determines that neither player has a substantially completed card, the partnership may play only the Standard American Yellow Card and may use only standard carding. This restriction may be lifted only at the beginning of a subsequent round after convention cards have been properly prepared and approved by the director. Further, the partnership will receive a 1/6-board matchpoint

penalty for each board played, commencing with the next round and continuing until the restriction is lifted. In IMP team games, penalties shall be at the discretion of the director.

If the director determines the partnership has at least one substantially completed convention card but has not fully complied with ACBL regulations, the director may give warnings or assign such penalties as he deems to be appropriate under the circumstances.

The objective of these warnings and penalties is the encouragement of full compliance with ACBL regulations.

Lewis

flighted Open Pairs A/B, with help from Taylor Burke, who assists Lewis with card sorting and play.

Lewis plays bridge online and in tournaments from Pensacola FL to New Orleans and he is involved with his unit – No. 180 – serving as president for a four-year term.

Segarra, who has played with Lewis for 20 years, is one of his many admirers.

“He’s not just a pretty good player,” says Segarra. “He’s by far the best player on the coast, and he’s adaptable. He’s willing to learn new things and play any system.”

More important, says Segarra, “he gets the most out of his partners, and that’s an underrated strength.”

Before his accident, Lewis played bridge but not seriously. “It was mostly bridge around the pool.”’

After the accident and time in recovery, Lewis took to the game with vigor, reading constantly and playing as much as possible, mostly at clubs. With the advent of bridge on the Internet, Lewis was able to expand his horizons. Recent advances in technology have made playing easier for him.

His favorite device is SmartNav, a hands-free mouse that Lewis can manipulate simply by moving his head. “It’s the damnedest thing,” he says.

Lewis often plays for hours at a time and enjoys good competition. “I have played against some really good people on OKbridge,” he says.

When Hurricane Katrina hit Louisiana and the Mississippi Gulf Coast in 2005, Lewis was Unit 180 president. The bridge club in Gulfport was destroyed and Lewis, who had been out of town when the storm him, was wondering what to do.

He says he was gratified to receive a call from Bill Cook Jr., the District 10 representative on the ACBL Board of Directors. Cook told Lewis that the Districts 10 and 7 (part of the Mid-Atlantic Bridge Association) were doing some fundraising to help clubs in the hardest-hit areas.

Now, he says, the club has been rebuilt and players are returning.

On the rare occasions when he isn’t playing bridge, Lewis likes to go to concerts, enjoying classical music and rock, and he serves as toastmaster for special occasions in the area.

Bridge, however, is his main interest and source of enjoyment. Lewis acknowledges a tendency to aggressive bidding– “I’m not known to be timid,” he says – but to him that’s part of the fun of the game. After all, he says, “I kind of like to win.”

500Director ruling: 3♥ by East, down one,

North–South plus 100.Committee ruling: 3♥ by East, down one,

North–South plus 100.The Facts: East called the director after North’s first pass.

He explained that he had asked for the meaning of 2♥ and was told that North was unsure. At the end of the deal, it was determined that the North–South convention card shows that systems are on over a double and over a 1NT overcall. West said

that she considered 3♥ a cuebid, not natural given the explanation of 2♥. North said he would have doubled 3♥ given the opportunity to do so.

The Ruling: The director polled five players: three bid 4♣

over 3♥ with the West hand while two passed. The results of the poll found that passing was a logical alternative and in accordance with Law 21.B.3, the result was adjusted to 3♥ by East, down one, North–South plus 100.

The Appeal: North–South appealed the ruling and attended

the hearing. The Decision:It was clear that the failure to Announce had

given the offending pair an advantage, and plus 100 for East–West going down two in 3♥ was the correct result. The committee found North’s statement that he would have doubled 3♥ to be sincere, but it had to be discounted as self- serving. Double, while possible, is not automatic. The committee then turned its attention to whether East–West should have protected themselves by making a better effort to learn the actual agreement. Even experienced players seem to not know that they should call the director during the auction in these circumstances, and based on the guidance received from staff it was judged that the non-offenders had done enough to also get the result in 3♥. However, the committee urges that there be ongoing education for cases such as this.

The committee judged that down one in 3♥ was both the most favorable result for East–West that was likely and the most unfavorable result that was at all probable for North–South. Accordingly the Appeals Committee ruled with the TD: 3♥ by East, down one for both sides.

The appeal was found to have substantial merit.

TIME TO DECIDE, TIME TO REGISTER

Page 13Daily Bulletin Sunday, March 22, 2015

Play for a world title with no need to qualifyFor most world championships, players must

qualify, usually in team trials. The United States Bridge Federation is in charge of the selection process. Six squads in three divisions will represent USA in the 42nd World Bridge Bridge Teams Championships in Chennai, India, from Sept. 26 to Oct. 10.

You may not get to India via the team trials, but you can compete for a world title anyway.

The 10th World Transnational Open Teams runs from Oct. 4 to 10 alongside the Bermuda Bowl, Venice Cup and Senior Bowl – and the only requirement is that you must be in good standing with your national bridge organization. That’s the ACBL for people who live in the U.S., Canada, Mexico and Bermuda.

The WTOT starts with 15 rounds of Swiss teams qualification, the top eight teams going into the knockout stage. You can play with any eligible player from any country, as a partner or teammate. WBF President Gianarrigo Rona said that, based on inquiries about the WTOT, he is expecting a big turnout for the event. He said there will be no issues of safety for players or difficulty with visas for travel to India.

The tournament venue is the ITC Grand Chola Hotel, where special room rates have been negotiated by the World Bridge Federation. A stay at the Grand Chola includes a buffet breakfast and free wi-fi. Within the Grand Chola, there are seven restaurants with a variety of cuisines.

Chennai, once known as Madras, is the only city in South Asia to figure in the “52 places to go around the world” by the New York Times. Lonely Planet, a tourism guide publisher, has named Chennai one of the top 10 cities in the world to visit in 2015.

With temples, beaches and centers of historical and cultural significance, Chennai is a popular destination for Indians and foreigners. In terms of foreign tourist visits, Chennai has been the most visited Indian city since 2008.

During late September and early October, the weather is warm in the daytime with mid-70s temperatures in the evening, similar to Bali, which hosted the world championships in 2013.

Rona suggested booking air travel and hotel rooms early to assure the best prices. For more information, visit www.worldbridge.org/chennai-hotels.aspx

she had played a couple of sessions at a club in Dallas. She says Chris and Donna Compton offered major help, letting her teach classes at their club, the Bridge Academy of North Dallas.

“She’s a good egg,” says Chris, “and the bridge world takes care of its own.”

Chambers says a strong religious faith has sustained her as she gets further and further away from the influences that nearly wrecked her life. “I’m a nice person now,” she says.

Jo Morse was at the tournament when Chambers made her return to tournament bridge. “When I saw Juanita in Dallas,” Morse says, “I let out a shriek that would have woken the dead.”

“She was missed by everyone,” says Martha Katz. “We missed the energy she brings to the tournaments.”

Chambers says that bidding changed a lot while she was away from the game, but the card play and defense – which she considers her strengths – are the same. One current partner told her not to worry about the new conventions because “you never could bid anyway.”

Now working on “playing the rust off,” Chambers is sure there will be no relapses. “I’m healthy, and everyone has made me feel loved and

2NT showed a forcing heart raise. 3♣ showed a minimum opener. 3♦ asked about shortness and 3♠ said yes, in diamonds. 4♣ and 4♦ were controls. 5♥ asked, “What about spades (the unbid suit)?” With the diamond void, Munday chose 6♥ rather than bidding 5NT to show the ♠K and suggest a possible notrump slam.

North led a low spade won by the ace. South returned the ♠7 to Munday’s ♠K.

Declarer played ♥2: 4, ace, 3. (Wish trick!) When he came off dummy with a low diamond and East played the ♦2 without a twitch, Munday initially placed the ♦K in North’s hand. He ruffed ♦6 with the ♥8.

To collect some more information, he ruffed a spade (RHO pitched a diamond) and played the ♥K. He cashed dummy’s ♦A, pitching a low club from hand, overtook the ♥J with the queen, and played his last heart, RHO pitching a diamond and LHO letting go of the ♦J and his last two spades.

LHO’s labored discards made the temporary assignment of the ♦K look more like a sure thing.

Munday cashed the ♣A and then the ♠Q. When lefty pitched a low club, Munday discarded the ♦Q from dummy. He played to the ♣K (perforce bringing down the doubleton queen) and the ♣J was his 12th trick. Plus 1010 was good for 42 of 51 matchpoints.

LHO, who is apparently afflicted with a counting disorder when opponents’ slams make, jumped all over his partner. “Pitch your diamonds!” he insisted hotly. “You can’t pitch clubs!”

Munday eyed LHO calmly. “She only had two clubs.”

Today is Judy Katz Day. Judy Katz is one of the top players in the LBA.

She was married to local businessman and political figure “Hippo” Katz for more than 50 years. One of the area’s leading players describes Judy as “a happy, talkative, speedy bridge player who is quite skilled in the game. She can whisk out a win at the speed of light.” Judy loves to cook and can prepare an entire meal for large groups she invites to eat in her “le garage,” where she can seat 20 people or thereabout …While she may sometimes lose count of dinner guests, she never loses count in bridge.

All the regional Swiss events today are being held in memory of Jeff Johnston.

Jeff Johnston was a vibrant force in the ACBL for two decades. While he wore many hats, his biggest role was as Mr. NABC. From site exploration to staffing to set-up, from packing up to breaking down, Jeff was the behind-the-scenes magic that made everything work.

No job was too small and no hour too early or too late: Jeff was first and foremost about service. He liked to call himself “the world’s foremost non-bridge playing bridge expert,” a moniker he earned through years of striving to create the best possible tournament experience for NABC guests.

Jeff was a mentor who made a significant difference in the lives of a number of his co-

workers. His ability to listen – really listen – made him a stand-out manager. His charisma, and oh! his humor! (Jeff liked exclamation marks) – sometimes dry, often silly and once in a while outright slap-sticky – made him just plain fun to be around. NABC goers were lucky to get a regular dose of Jeff’s humor via “The Insider” column in the NABC Daily Bulletin.

This New Orleans NABC is the first without Jeff at the helm. He died Dec. 29. His co-workers, his services crew, Wendy, the tournament directors, the local planning committee, fans of “The Insider” and all of his NABC family and friends miss him terribly.
