STEWARDSHIP & WORSHIP

02

This weekend we celebrate the feast of Pentecost and the coming of the Holy Spirit among the fearful believers of the early Church. Saint Paul reminds us of the special power the Holy Spirit has bestowed upon us to give us confidence and how that power gives us the potential to live extraordinary lives of faith. Good stewards recognize this power and use their gifts, through God’s channel of grace, to transform their lives and the lives of others. Good stewards know that it is through the Holy Spirit that they can proclaim: “Jesus is Lord.” How do we allow the Holy Spirit to work within us to give us strength, confidence and hope?

“Every incident in [Jesus’] life is for us an example of obedience.” * Jesus obeyed His parents (Luke 2:51) and others “who represented for Him the authority of God, his father.” Consecrated persons embrace the obedience of Christ who said, “I came down from heaven not to do my own will but the will of the one who sent me.” (John 6:38).

They acknowledge being chosen by God and pronounce before Him “a vow or an oath promising to follow Him.” Obedience is not a yoke or an imposition or a diminution of the person. Obedience “rests on a will that is free, the will of the person who pronounced the vow or the oath, and willed thereby to submit him/herself to the will of God.” Obedience is “a value which uplifts.” The vow of obedience does not eliminate personal rights. Superiors cannot “abuse the authority that God has entrusted to them.” Nor should superiors pile on “more obligations than those envisaged in their rule … by imposing on others—as Christ says in his Gospel—heavy burdens that they themselves do not carry.” Superiors should not use force to compel or subjugate others “as if they were prisoners in jail.” Saint Paul warned against this when he wrote, “Fathers, do not provoke your children, so they may not become discouraged.” (Colossians 3:21). Jesus is the model of obedience. He worked for his father in his workshop at Nazareth, “subject to the dictates and requirements of the customers who came to Him with their orders.” Jesus “behaved humbly, modestly and obligingly towards everyone.” He submitted Himself to His work and the “discomforts of a poor home.” Total dedication to Jesus means “to do God’s will, to please God, and to live a life of intimate union with God—a union of affection, a union of will, a union of deeds done in faith.” Jesus said, “The one who sent me is with me. He has not left me alone, because I always do what is pleasing to him.” (John 8:29). Do we do always what is pleasing to God? The Lord’s obedience is also an apostolic model. When the time came for Him to begin His ministry,

Jesus “left everything and went off in search of souls in order to bring them the word of God and guide them in the paths of salvation.” The Lord went to Zacchaeus’ home and He waited at the well for the Samaritan woman to give them grace, forgiveness, and knowledge of God. Jesus “never shirked toil, or weariness, or self-sacrifice, intensifying his life of prayer and penance.” To do the will of His Father was to Jesus “as important as the food He ate.” (John 4:32, 34). “This is also the mission entrusted to consecrated souls: to carry out the will of God in order to accomplish the work that He has entrusted to them, in other words, their own sanctification and the salvation of souls.” A lifetime of obedience culminated in Jesus’ becoming a victim “sacrificed in obedience to the will of the Father for the redemption of the world.” Jesus shrank from the prospect of suffering, humiliation, and death, “but He put obedience to his Father’s will before the repugnance of his own nature: Not as I will, but as You will.” (Matthew 26:39). In the Liturgy of the Hours, a psalm-prayer helps us understand Psalm 40 in terms of Christ’s obedience.

Lord Jesus Christ, you were made obedient unto death, and your name was exalted above all others. Teach us always to do the Father’s will, so that, made holy by obedience which unites us to the sacrifice of your body, we can expect your great love in times of sorrow and sing a new song to our God. **

Sister Lúcia echoes Psalm 40 when she writes, “If obedience were not costly, what merit should we have in obeying? It is when it demands a sacrifice of us that we prove our love for God.”

Pentecost - the catechism of the catholic church

Happy birthday to the Catholic Church! Happy birthday to you, who are the body of the Church! We’re all familiar with our own birthdays, and we celebrate them because they mark the day of the year in which we entered into this life. But did you know you have a second birthday? Because you are part of the body of the Church, Pentecost is the Church’s birthday, and yours as well. And like any birthday, it’s a cause for celebration. The word Pentecost is Greed and it means “50th day.” Fif-ty days after Easter Sunday, we celebrate the coming of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles and their followers, and the beginning of their Earthly ministry to make dis-ciples of all nations. Pentecost is also a Jewish holiday, which the Jews use to cel-ebrate the end of Passover. Jews celebrate the gift of the law to Mo-ses at Mt. Sinai on this day. But we,

as Catholics celebrate the birth of our Church. At Pentecost, the Apostles and their followers were gathered in a room. Jews from all over the world were gathered with Peter, the leader of the Apostles and the Eleven. At this time, a great wind blew and a flame appeared as a tongue of fire, which split itself in-to many individual flames above the heads of all those present. The Holy Spirit came upon these peo-ple and each began to speak in tongues. Despite the fact many had no common language, they were perfectly able to understand one another. Others who were not so blessed, accused those speaking in tongues of being drunk, but Pe-ter arose and addressed the crowd, explaining that it was only 9 o’clock, and that this phenome-non was not intoxication, but ra-ther this was the work of the Holy Spirit, prophesized in the scripture. Peter then called all those present to be baptized that day. These people were among the first Catholics, and Peter is the first pope of the Catholic Church. The symbols of Pentecost are the flame, wind, and the dove, which represents the Holy Spirit. The color of Pentecost is red and the priest wears red vestments on this day. Parishioners are also in-vited to wear red on this day. Red decorations as well as celebrations are appropriate, similar to any oth-er birthday. Special prayers are of-ten said just for Pentecost.

the holy spirit and the church

737 The mission of Christ and the Holy Spirit is brought to com-

pletion in the Church, which is the Body of Christ and the Temple of the Holy Spirit. This joint mission henceforth brings Christ’s faithful to share in his communion with the Father in the Holy Spirit. The Spirit prepares men and women and goes out to them with his grace, in order to draw them to Christ. The Spirit manifests the ris-en Lord to them, recalls his word to them and opens their minds to the understanding of his Death and Resurrection. He makes pre-sent the mystery of Christ, su-premely in the Eucharist, in order to reconcile them, to bring them into communion with God, that they may “bear much fruit.” 132 738 Thus the Church’s mis-sion is not an addition to that of Christ and the Holy Spirit, but is its sacrament: in her whole being and in all her members, the Church is sent to announce, bear witness, make present, and spread the mystery of the communion of the Holy Trinity. All of us who have received one and the same Spirit, that is, the Holy Spirit, are in a sense blended together with one anoth-er and with God. For if Christ, to-gether with the Father’s and his own Spirit, comes to dwell in each of us, though we are many, still the Spirit is one and undivided. He binds together the spirits of each and every one of us,...and makes all appear as one in him. For just as the power of Christ’s sacred flesh unites those in whom it dwells into one body, I think that in the same way the one and undi-vided Spirit of God, who dwells in all, leads all into spiritual unity. 133

may - the month of mary - Mary’s visitation and glorification of god Mary, in her charity and caught up in the excitement of the mystery of the virginal con-ception of the Messiah who is the Son of God made man, quickly responds to the news of Eliz-abeth’s pregnancy and goes to visit her. That we about a 4 or 5 day, 90-mile journey, probably on a donkey. A grace-filled moment that was! “When Elizabeth heard of Mary’s greeting, the infant leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth [was] willed with the Holy Spirit” (Lk 1:41). Mary’s holy presence in fullness of grace, and pregnant with Jesus, caused the unborn John the Baptist to be sanctified in his mother’s womb, and filled Elizabeth with the Holy Spirit. This may help us to understand the grace we may bring to those we visit, and how important an event our visits are. May it be true that we are so full of God that our visits sanctify others. And we purposely, prayerfully prepare ourselves for that to happen. Elizabeth was inspired by the Holy Spirit to cry out in a loud voice, “Most blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. And how does this happen to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?” (Lk 1:41-43). The Ignatius Catholic Study Bible com-ments, “Elizabeth blesses Mary with words once spoken to Jael and Judith in the Old Testament (Judg 5:24-27; Jud 13:18). These women were blessed for their heroic faith and courage in warding off enemy armies hostile to Israel. Victo-ry was assured when both Jael and Judith assas-sinated the opposing military commanders with a mortal blow to the head. Mary will follow in their footsteps, yet in her case both the enemy destroyed and the victory won will be greater, for she will bear the Savior who crushes the head of sin, death, and the devil underfoot” (Gen 3:15; 1 Jn 3:8, CCC 64, 489). We must notice here that Elizabeth calls Mary, “mother of my Lord”. She is inspired to pro-claim Mary to be the mother of God made man. We note that every occurrence of the word Lord in this verse and the surrounding context refers

to God (1:28, 32, 38, 46, 58, 68). Mary’s divine mother-hood was the first Marian dogma expounded by the Church. The Ecumenical Council of Ephesus in AD 431 defined her unique relation-ship to Christ and honored her with the title, “Mother of God” (Greek: theotokos) and she continues to mother God in each of us. Do we realize that thus far we have been meditating on the Hail Mary? We’ve just covered the last part when we pray, “Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners”. Elizabeth called Mary, mother of my Lord, that is, Mother of God made man in Jesus.

MARY GLORIFIES GOD

Mary responds to Elizabeth’s words of praise and congratulations with her canticle of praise which we call the Magnificat, the Latin word which begins the canticle. It means “to glo-rify” or make much over God in praise of his greatness. She rejoices in God who is her savior. She realizes that he has looked upon her in her lowliness. As a result, all ages, all generations, will call her blessed. God, the mighty one, has done great things for her and he is holy, beyond all comparison - there is nothing like him in this world. His greatness is totally apart and removed from this created world. His mercy, or forgiving love, is forever extended to those who reverence him. He has demonstrated his strength and dis-persed the proud of heart. He has put down the high and mighty from their thrones and has lift-ed up the lowly. He has filled those who are hun-gry for God and spiritual food, while he has sent those who are rich in self exaltation and gratifi-cation empty away. He has come to the help of his people, as he had promised Abraham and his descendants in faith (Lk 1: 46-55).

MONDAY, JUNE 1ST - SAINT HANNIBAL MARY DI FRANCIA Third of four children of Francis the Marquises of Saint Catherine of Jonio, a Papal Vice-Consul, a knight, and Honorary Captain of the Navy; his mother was Anna Toscano, an Italian aristocrat. His father died when Hanni-bal was fifteen months old. The boy developed a devotion to the Eucharist and the Virgin Mary. At age 17, while in prayer before the Blessed Sacrament, he received a call to religious life. Ordained March 16, 1878. Immediately after he moved into the Avigone ghetto, one of the most impoverished areas he could find, and began a life’s work with the poor. In 1882 he founded the An-thonian Orphanages, so-called because they were under the patronage of Saint Anthony of Padua; they were noted for their operation as an extended family. In order to expand this work to a much larger sphere of physically and spiritually poor he founded The Daughters of Divine Zeal in 1887, and The Ro-gationists in 1897; they were canonically approved on August 6, 1926. He be-lieved in the need for a strong priesthood; he started the Holy Alliance and Pious Union of the Evangelical Rogation, worldwide movements of prayer for vocations, and published the periodical God and Neighbor with information about these movements and their work. He worked to be a model for the seminarians who came to work in his schools, and cared for the physical and spiritual needs of his brothers and sisters in the religious life. He was consid-ered a saint during his life, and received a vision of the Virgin Mary just before his death. The groups he founded continue today, working all over the world in prayer, publishing, orphanages, schools, training for the deaf and mute, care for the aged, homes for single mothers, and schools of all types.

Boniface walked up to the tree, removed his shirt, took up an axe, and without a word he hacked down the six foot wide wooden god. Boniface stood on the trunk, and asked, “How stands your might god? My God is stronger than he.” The crowd’s reaction was mixed, but some conversions were begun. One tradition about Saint Boniface says that he used the customs of the locals to help convert them. There was a game in which they threw sticks called kegels at smaller sticks called heides. Boniface bought religion to the game, having the heides represent demons, and knocking them down showing purity of spirit.
