GLM is a year-round Montessori program that offers themed summer camps. With special summer activities within the Montessori program, we provide continuity for returning students and develop teacher/child/family relationships with new students.

Toddler Fun in the Sun(18 Months - 3 Years)The summer is a great time for new toddlers to adjust to a day away from parents and other caregivers. The fundamentals of being “in school” are learned in a loving, fun environment. Toddlers attend age-appropriate assemblies and events and enjoy their own outdoor activities such as gardening and splashing in wading pools on warm days.

Summer Fun in the Sun(Pre-K thru Kindergarten)In addition to the continuity of the Montessori classroom curriculum, there will be themed sessions in science, sports, creative arts and transportation. Other weekly activities include gardening, music/movement, yoga, art, cooking and water play.

Intro to the Performing Arts - Aug. 5 - Aug. 16(For GLM 5 yr. olds only)

This program is optional for GLM 5 yr. olds enrolled in summer day camp. During Week 1 the children will be escorted daily for 1-1/2 hours, to the performing arts classroom (social hall) and will then be returned to their regular GLM classrooms for ongoing activities. Week 2, parents must drop children at the theater and staff will return them to GLM. They will learn dances and songs from specialists and will perform in groups as frogs and village children. Arts, crafts, scenery projects, movement classes and costumes are part of this introductory theatre program. Full 10-day attendance is required. Limited enrollment on a first-come, first-served basis. Performing Arts Camp - August 5 - August 16(Ages 6-12 yrs.)

In two short weeks, kids learn about theater, audition, casting, memorize roles and dances - and on Friday, August 16, put on an entire children’s opera. Working with theater professionals, this is an extraordinary opportunity for children who are interested in theater. This program is open to the general public. Full 10-day attendance is required. Limited enrollment on a first-come, first-served basis.

WILLIAM BOKHOUT, Operatic baritone, has been the resident Bari-tone with Opera Grand Rapids for 25 seasons, performing as many as 35 different roles. In 2003, Mr. Bokhout founded The 2nd Act Opera Com-pany, a professional touring group dedicated to promoting Opera as an art form to young people, performing in many of the schools in the area as well as touring with his wife Hollis, presenting Children’s Opera Work-shops in elementary schools across the country.

HOLLIS BOKHOUT received her undergraduate degree in Theater from Bowling Green State University and her Master’s Degree in Vocal Performance from Marshall University. Mrs. Bokhout has been a frequent featured performer, displaying her versatility in opera, musical theater, and jazz. She is also a classically trained dancer having performed with the Toledo Ballet Company, and maintains an active teaching studio in the Grand Rapids area.

The Story of:

“THE MIRACLE TREE”A Children’s Opera Based on

the Book - The Wisdom Tree by Lynne Cherry

Our Story takes place in the beautiful, dense Amazon Rainforest. We are introduced to Gaia, goddess of the Earth, who sings of the beautiful sights and sounds of the rainforest and its creatures and speaks to the delicate balance of its ecosystem. One by one, we meet the creatures who inhabit the Understory and Canopy layers, as well as the tribal villagers who also call the rainforest home.

All over the world, woodsmen are chopping down trees and clearing large areas of the rain forests. A trio of birds, the Macaw, the Toucan, and the Parrot witness the effects of man’s intervention in the rain forests and f ly back to share what they have seen with Gaia and the other creatures. They listen in horror as the birds recount the felling of great trees and the clearing of whole swaths of the world’s rain forests.

Woodsmen enter the Amazon rainforest and set about the task of chopping the trees. A single woodsman is assigned the task of chopping a great Kapok tree. Hot and weary from his labor, he lies down to rest at the foot of the tree and falls asleep. Gaia leads the creatures to the place where he sleeps and the creatures , in turn, beg him not to destroy their home. They tell him that every tree is important to the tenuous balance of the web of life, not only for the rainforest, but also for our planet. The man awakes with a start and all around him he sees the creatures and villagers of the rainforest and the beauty of this tropical world. Their whispers echo in his ears. When his superior returns in dismay to see the job incomplete, the woodsman looks with new eyes on all he sees and makes his decision.
