MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN THE LIVES OF OUR RESIDENTS

Many years ago, Elaine Rocker, of blessed memory, and past chair of The Montefiore Foundation, asked me to serve as The Montefiore Foundation board chair and I told her I had too many business commitments. Three years ago,

I agreed to serve as board chair after being assured it would entail only four meetings a year, even though it’s more like four meetings a month! All kidding aside, I have enjoyed my tenure as chair as well as the many years I have spent on the Foundation Board, which I will be leaving to serve on the Montefiore Board of Directors.

The past three years have been rewarding as I look back on our many accomplishments including building The David and Freda Robinson Residence, a memory care assisted living community at The Weils, funding for our Home Smart Memory Care program, creating the Montefiore Home Run, which just completed its third successful year, helping fund the Vinney Hospice Medical Director position and our latest initiative and most innovative undertaking – launching the exciting Shining Star CLE 2017!

What is often missed in doing community work are the people you meet, the relationships that develop and the insights you gain. The people I have met are nothing short of terrific, passionate in their belief in Montefiore’s mission and vision and are tireless in continually working on ways to improve the lives of our residents. These are, by and large, individuals I would not have met but for my involvement with Montefiore, and will no doubt be lifelong relationships.

I have gained a great deal of respect for the individuals who care for our residents, creating a community environment that their families feel good about their loved ones living in. Seeing the inner workings also gave me an understanding of people’s needs and how current government reimbursements fall very short of providing the funding allowing for the many extras that make a difference in the lives of our residents. programs we provide our residents is made possible through the generosity of people and businesses supporting our annual campaign, and people who create named funds for a specific purpose such as providing cable television service, musical programs, cultural and restaurant outings, subscriptions to the Cleveland Jewish News or Plain Dealer and providing medical equipment and supplies.

The additional funding is made possible through the efforts of Foundation Director Debbie Rothschild and her great team (see page 7). As The Montefiore Foundation chair, I could always count on Debbie to execute ideas – plus her team always made me look like a genius – thank you Debbie!

I am looking forward to working on the Montefiore Board with Seth Vilensky, Mark Weiss, Carol Weiss, Susan Lieberman, Evan Lubline, Tina King and other members of the management team.

Creating successful results in cooking require the right ingredients – a tablespoon of this, a cup of that, a dash of seasoning – all to make the perfect dish. At Montefiore and The Weils, our volunteers are the key component in our winning recipe. Our 2017 Volunteer Recognition Dinner highlighted the spice our volunteers add every day to the lives of our residents.

The Klein Bernstein Award, formerly known as the Bea Bernstein Volunteer of

the Year Award, was renamed in honor of Bea’s sister Millie Klein, who was our first Volunteer Director. Darla Gordon was the recipient of this award. As an active volunteer for more than eight years, Darla leads by example and encourages individuals to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others. She has assisted in strategic planning for the Volunteer Services Department, helped design our Above and Beyond Recognition and Reward program and co-chairs our many events including the MVP Ice Cream Socials and Oneg Shabbat celebrations.

The recipient of the 2017 Weils Volunteer of the Year Award was Beverly Sullivan. Beverly demonstrates true dedication by teaching and playing mahj with Weils residents for the past five years (see page 4). Denise Pease, foundation assistant, was the 2017 Staff Appreciation Award recipient for her welcoming demeanor and support of volunteers.

Our volunteers’ passion and zest help brighten the lives of residents and puts a smile on their faces! Thank you all!

MESSAGE FROMRABBI JOEL CHAZIN

A HERO AMONG USIn New York City, a homeless

man fell from a subway station platform. Though some stood by in horror, helplessly afraid to do no more than call the police, a brave, young man jumped onto the tracks to the rescue. Within moments, he lifted the fallen man

to safety and became a hero. The rescuer, whose name was not revealed,

showed true courage in the face of danger. But, how do we muster the strength to respond to someone in a threatening situation or simply in need? It requires enormous inner courage and the readiness to act.

Another story of heroism is when a New England couple assisted in the saving of Jews, Czechs, journalists and anyone marked for extinction during the Nazi regime.

Martha and Waitstill Sharp, a Protestant couple, worked tirelessly, and in constant danger, for more than six years – from early 1939 to the last part of 1945. Waitstill, a Unitarian minister serving in Wellesley, Massachusetts, and his wife Martha, a social worker, were summoned and urged to help as many as they could in the face of the Nazi menace, terrorizing Europe.

The crushing need was to save lives: to obtain false papers, passports/identification, enabling individuals to travel to safe havens, free of Nazi control. Working stealthily, staying one day ahead of the Gestapo, who constantly followed them, Martha and Waitstill Sharp saved hundreds from certain death. In 2005, the couple became the second and third of only five Americans honored as “Righteous Among the Nations” by Yad VaShem – The World Holocaust Remembrance Center in Israel.

The Sharps’ strength and bravery led to them being heroes for many. They had no desire for fame or applause. They simply acted because others were in need.

Have You Had“The Conversation?”

Those of us who have journeyed with loved ones at the end of their lives have an understanding of how difficult that time of life can be. So many of us enter it unprepared to address the needs that arise or to make the kind of decisions required of us, leaving us floundering. However, it doesn’t have to be that way. When families and loved ones are prepared for and supported into life’s end, it is possible to come through it peacefully.

Montefiore is committed to bringing this kind of education and support to our community. And now Vinney Hospice is partnering with The Conversation Project to offer a program that has been created with the goal of helping people talk about their wishes for end-of-life care, and helping families and loved ones make sure those wishes are known, understood and followed. We are reaching out to religious and community groups for help by co-sponsoring this two-part program to groups of ten or more.

You can talk about what is important to you with the people in your life that have the power to make a difference as you live into the end of your life. We look forward to the opportunity to teach you some tools that will make it a positive and constructive experience. DEBBIE ROTHSCHILD, DIRECTOR OF THE MONTEFIORE FOUNDATION

THE TEAM BEHIND THE FUNDRAISING

I have the good fortune to work every day knowing what I accomplish makes a difference to the patients, residents and families at Montefiore, The Weils and those in the community. With each and every initiative, we move closer to having the resources to provide the best in quality care. We all know the healthcare landscape is uncertain. We also know that it takes financial resources to do what we do – addressing our residents’ needs. You, as a community, understand these needs and continually respond accordingly.

Over the past few years we have made great strides in our fundraising efforts. We have increased our annual campaign support – both in dollars and in the number of donors – our family funds and created new fundraising events: Shining Star CLE and the Home Run. We have done all of this with your support and we are tremendously grateful.

Now let me tell you something you may not know, we have an extraordinary Foundation team. It seems that over the past few years, I have gotten to know many of you and many of you have gotten to know me, but you may not have had the opportunity to get to know the rest of our team.

Denise Pease, foundation assistant, works tirelessly making sure each of our donors are acknowledged promptly and accurately. She manages all of our donor data and our grant requests with thoughtfulness and attention to detail. Most importantly, Denise does all of what she does with honest compassion and love for our residents.

Alyssa Rothstein, development associate, is relatively new to the fundraising world. She works tremendously hard to learn and grow and has done an exceptional job since day one. She took great care with every detail as she planned our third annual 5K Home Run and has begun to develop terrific relationships with our new Associate Board members. Alyssa’s career has a beautiful and bright future.

Renee Greller, development associate and newest team member, brings wisdom, logic and strong leadership to her work. Within her first three months at Montefiore, Renee has secured $200,000 in grant support, reached out to hundreds of teachers, administrators and students to encourage participation in Shining Star CLE and has raised significant dollars towards our record setting 2017 annual campaign. We are thrilled to have Renee on our team.

We are thrilled to have launched an Associate Board to develop the next generation of leaders at Montefiore. Members, ages of 21 to 40, will help raise awareness and advocate on behalf of Montefiore and The Weils. Their mission is to take action through social media and social capital, fundraise for several initiatives and raise awareness on issues facing seniors. Most recently the associate board collaborated on ways to grow our annual Home Run 5K and 1M Run/Walk event. Thank you to all our board members.

We are excited about kicking-off the 2017-2018 Annual Sustaining Campaign (ASC). After exceeding our goal for the ASC 2017, reaching an all-time high in individual donors and completing two successful Home Run events in the fiscal year, we cannot wait to see what this year will bring. It is our privilege to continue providing loving, innovative care at Montefiore, The Weils and in the community for more than 135 years, despite mounting fiscal challenges. These essential services we provide each and every day give families and friends the peace of mind knowing their loved

Your Generosity Makes The Loving Difference!one is in caring, capable hands. Your generosity makes Montefiore and The Weils better places to live, work, visit and volunteer. Generous gifts ensure each resident receives the best in care and services, regardless of their ability to pay. Please consider supporting our annual campaign – you make the loving difference! For more information or to make your pledge, please visit montefiorecare.org or contact Renee Greller, development associate, at [email protected] or 216.910.2652.

People often credit the development director for the fundraising success. However, nothing I do is accomplished alone – I am part of an incredible team. Together, we are all caring for our patients and residents by raising the necessary funds to provide “the loving difference.”

I hope each of you will take a moment to get to know the Foundation team.

With warmth,

Men of Fairmount Temple Mitzvah Corps Honored! On April 1, nearly 100 people filled the Maltz Auditorium at Montefiore to honor the Men of Fairmount Temple’s Mitzvah Corps for 50 years of volunteer service. Speakers included Beachwood Mayor Merle Gorden, Seth Vilensky, Montefiore president and CEO, Lester Potash and Barry Jacobs of the Men of Fairmount Temple, and Rabbi Joshua Caruso and Cantor Sarah Sager of Fairmount Temple.
