Awesome Blossom Toss’emCome  celebrate  Chico’s  return  to  spring with  a  round  of  disc  golf.    CARD and  the Outsiders have partnered to organize a free event for kids 8-16 at the Sherwood Forest disc golf course.  The Robin Hood themed disc golf course was designed to challenge children and beginners, and is a great place to learn about the lifelong sport of disc golf.  The first 50 registered children between the age of 8-16 will receive a free golf disc.

FREE Movies in the ParkCome and  enjoy  this  summer  tradition! Every  summer hundreds of  families  enjoy free Movies in the Park. Bring a blanket or a low back chair and sit under the stars while enjoying a family friendly movie. This program is made possible by generous donations  from  local  businesses.  Refreshments  will  be  available  to  purchase.  All movies will start approximately 15 minutes after sunset.

Summer CampsImportant Information for All CampsWe want each camper to be prepared the first day of camp. Therefore, we have detailed information sheets for each camp that you will receive at the time of registration. ALL forms should be completed and brought to the first day of camp. These forms are also available online.

Registration, Refunds and Transfers•  If  there  is  not  a  specific  registration  deadline  listed,  registration  will  close  at 5:00 PM on the Thursday prior to the Monday of camp, or once the camp is full, whichever comes first.  Space is limited to a first come, first serve basis.  Registration after the stated deadline is based on Supervisor approval. •  If  the  camp  is  full,  you will be placed on a waiting  list and contacted  if  space becomes  available.  Camp  fees  are  a  flat  rate  and  are  not  pro-rated  for  days  not attended• Requests  for  refunds  and  transfers must  be  received  by  Thursday  at  10:00  AM prior to the camp start date.  Please check dates closely. Should you request a refund or transfer after the deadline has passed, we will make every effort to fill your space.  If we are able to fill your space, you will receive a full refund.  Unfortunately, we are unable to make any exceptions unless valid emergency or medical documentation can be provided.

Camp Chi-Da-CaChi-Da-Ca  is CARD’s  longest  running  camp!    Activities  include nature  skills,  camp crafts,  hiking,  outdoor  cooking,  archery,  games  and  swimming.  Camp  is  located at Hooker Oak Recreation  Area  by  upper  Bidwell  Park. Buddy requests must be submitted to the CARD office prior to the week of camp. T-shirts may be purchased at the CARD office, on an individual basis, for any week of camp for $8.00. Camp is open at 7:30 am for parents who need care at that time. We would like all campers there by 9:00 am.

Jr. Super Hero Engineering with Lego® Lego® Super Heroes need your help to defeat the destructive forces of their evil arch-villains!  Explore inventions such as Spider-Man’s web shooter and the Bat Wing.  Learn what makes them not only Super Heroes, but Super Hero Engineers.   Discover how these gadgets work using real world concepts in physics, engineering and architecture.  Play-Well Technology Instructor- Heather Maloy.  Dorothy F. Johnson Center.

Lego® RoboticsAre you ready to program robots using Lego®? Learn about building and programming robots using the LEGO Mindstorms system, laptop computers and Play-Well’s 100,000 piece Lego® kit!  Explore the many uses of tough, light and ultrasonic sensors with a robotic project of your own unique design.  Build and program your robot with a partner to avoid obstacles.  Completing the FUNdamentals camp is recommended, but not  required. Play-Well Technology  Instructor- Heather Maloy.   Dorothy F.  Johnson Center.

 Freshi Films is the child of the International Family Film Festival.   Freshi films is a mentor-led, kid-directed filmmaking program designed for kids. We place cameras in the hands of young filmmakers allowing them to imagine, plan, shoot, edit and screen their own films. Films and games are posted on the Freshi website at www.freshimedia.com and/or can be downloaded on a personal thumb drive by the participants.  Game Design- software and final games are for PC only, but Mac users can play the games through the website.

Freshi- Beginning Game Design Don’t  just play games–play your own game! Participants work  in pairs  to develop, design  and  build  their  own  original  computer  game  from  scratch.  Campers  learn fundamental  game  elements  including  how  to make  characters move, make  their virtual world  interactive, and set  the high score  for  their game.   Freshi staff. CARD Community Center, Room 3.

Freshi- Advanced Game DesignIn Advanced Game Design, campers who have previously taken a Freshi game design course learn how to take their game creation skills to the next level.  Advanced game types, animations, and effects-applied 2D games are  taught.   Platform gaming and gravity  are  introduced and  students  learn how  to work with a  side  scrolling game format popular in many mobile apps and classic video games.  The students will create a goal oriented game, and all characters and stories are original to the creators.  From platforms  to  power-ups,  your  game design  ideas  become  reality  in advanced game design!  Freshi staff. CARD Community Center, Room 3.

Freshi- Stop Motion AnimationParticipants in this program will learn the basics of Stop-Motion Animation, bringing objects and backgrounds to life to create interesting and imaginative stories!  Campers work in small groups or production teams to complete a short animated film, which they  create  themselves.    Learning  materials,  software,  and  cameras  are  provided.  Basic  concepts  such  as  camera  angles,  storyboards,  scripting  elements,  and  theme will be introduced.  Participants may choose to bring in their own objects to animate, although it is not necessary.  Freshi staff. CARD Community Center, Room 3.

British Soccer CampFeaturing “Challenger” British CoachesBe a part of this exciting international experience! Actual British soccer coaches will be in Chico to coach both technical and tactical skills. Use the skills you learn from international coaches to help you excel at your game no matter what team you play for. This camp is like no other that you have been a part of. Participants are placed in  groups/teams by  age. Program will  be held  at DeGarmo Park.  Each participant registered in the program receives a hand stitched soccer ball and t-shirt.

Get A Discount on British Soccer Camp! Help us house our visiting coaches. If you host a coach in your home during the duration of the camp (1 week), your child will receive a PARTIAL SCHOLARSHIP ($80 rebate) to attend the camp!!! Recreation Swim TeamThe CARD Summer Recreational Swim Team has grown in popularity every year for the past five years. Come be a part of the team, make new friends, and improve your swimming skills. The goals of the program are to create a fun and healthy atmosphere where kids can experience what it’s like to be a part of a group swim team, and learn about competitive swimming.  Swimmers may also drop in for $3 per day if they are unable to commit to the entire session. Participants must be able to swim a lap of the pool unassisted.  Swim practice will be held at Shapiro Pool.

Our Time Together: Parent/Child Program:Fall 2013 Begins Wed. 9/4 We all love to watch our children blossom and grow. CARD has expanded it’s Our Time Together class and is now offering a more extensive toddler program. Our goal is to offer quality recreational programming that  is age appropriate  for young children. Providing an opportunity  for you and your  infant  to PLAY  together  is  the first  step to a lifetime of recreational opportunities. The benefits are endless. Not only are our classes a wonderful bonding opportunity for you and your child, they are an excellent way to meet new friends, introduce your child to other children, and find others that will support you through the exciting adventure of parenthood. We hope you enjoy our expanded offerings. 

Frequently Asked QuestionsWhat is the structure of the class? Each day  the  classroom will  be  set up with developmentally  age  appropriate  toys  and  activities  that  parents  can  do with  their child. The teachers will be there to assist parents and children in participation. 

How do I register for a class? Simply choose the class that is appropriate for the age of your child. If there is room in the class, you will be able to register immediately. If the class is full, you will be placed on a waiting list and contacted when a an opening becomes available.

How long is the session? This is an ongoing class. Once you are registered, you will remain registered until you notify us that your child will no longer attend. The fee for the class is due on the 1st of each month. Should you choose not to continue, you simply notify the CARD office so we can contact the next person on the waiting list.

How many teachers are there for the class? We  have  one  director  and  one assistant  for each class. Each teacher  is hand selected for  their experience working with young children. Staff are fingerprinted. 

Do I need to stay with my child during class? Yes. This class  is  formatted as a parent/child class with the goal of giving parents an opportunity to bond, meet other parents that have children the same age as theirs and provide parent support.

Chico Center for Learning Pre KLooking for a Pre Kindergarten program? CARD is partnering with the Chico Center for Learning (CCL)  to offer a pre K program for children 4  to 5 years old  that will be entering kindergarten next school year. With an emphasis on reading and math preparation, as well as music, movement, art and  science,  the CCL offers a quality program that will help prepare your child for kindergarten.  Class size is limited to 10 children. This program operates September - May with monthly fees of $300. If you are interested in this program, please contact CCL directly at 343-2980.

Thrive: K-12Learning CenterOur  mission  at  Thrive  is  to  inspire  a life-long  love  of  learning  by  respecting each  person’s  individual  interests, strengths,  and  capabilities.  It  is  a  place where children are  free  to  learn,  inspire, imagine, create, play, and shine!

After School ProgramsLooking for a safe, fun and enriching place to send your children after school?  If so, CARD’s Kids On Campus After School Program is the place for you!  This is not your typical “hang out in the cafeteria program.”  In addition to time for homework, arts, crafts, games, free play and a healthy snack, participants are exposed to a variety of enrichment opportunities.  This program follows the school calendar. Participants are signed in and out every day.  The ratio of staff to children is 1:12, and all staff are CPR and First Aid certified.

1st – 6th Grade Program:•  Participating Schools:  Blue Oak Charter, Chapman, Citrus, Hooker Oak,  

Little Chico Creek, McManus, Neal Dow, Parkview & Rosedale.•  Programs run from the time school gets out until 6:00 PM and is located in

Q:  How do I sign my child up?

A: To find out  if  your  child’s  school has openings, or  to get on  the waiting  list, contact the CARD office at 895-4711.  Many schools have little or no waiting list. However, CARD recommends you put your child on the waiting list when they are 2 years old to help ensure you will have a spot when they enter school. 

Q: Do I have to put my child on the waiting list each year?

A: No.    Once  you  put  your  child  on  the waiting  list,  you  stay  on  until  you  are offered a spot in the program.  Please make sure to contact us to update your phone number and address if they change. 

Q: Does my child have to attend every day?

A: No. The program is for your benefit, and you may use it as you feel necessary.  The fee for the program is a flat rate fee.  CARD does not prorate for days not attended.

Tribal Belly Dance Tribal Belly Dance  is a  contemporary and hypnotic Belly Dance Fusion  that draws on Middle Eastern and related dance styles. This course covers some of the beautiful moves typical for this style and the basics of improvisation for groups as part of the tribal belly dance format. The material presented here is very accessible to beginners and gives participants an opportunity to explore movement, rhythm, and a sense of centeredness and strength. Instructor: Tanya Kieselbach. CARD Center, Arts & Crafts Room.  No class 7/4.

Dance Classes at KineticsKinetics dance studio offers a wide variety of dance classes for all ages. Look through the descriptions below and choose the class that would be perfect for you or your child. All classes are monthly with new sessions starting at the beginning of each month. Dancewear and shoes are available for purchase at  the studio. Kinetics Academy of Dance, 627 Broadway.  All fees are due monthly. August fees are reduced due to a short session. 

Baby BalletThree little kittens lost their mittens and they danced away to find them! What if we sprinkled fairy dust on our toes and flew to Fairyland? Tutus, feathers, fairy wands, stories, and tons of props make these dance classes  fun and engaging!  Black leotard, pink tights, and pink ballet shoes are required and can be purchased at Kinetics.  

Beginning BalletCalling all Princesses! Experience the joy of dance in this beginning ballet class. Skip like a princess, walk like a queen, and leap like a unicorn! Bring your imagination to this fun ballet class. Classical ballet is taught with a creative twist! Black leotard, pink tights and pink ballet shoes are required and can be purchased at Kinetics. 

Hip HopEdgy and upbeat! This trendy street style of dance is done to contemporary music, but don’t worry, all movements and music are completely “clean”! 

Tap n TumbleLearn the basics of tap with a dose of tumbling for good measure! This class covers the fundamentals of tap, along with musicality, rhythm games, tumbling, and an obstacle course. Lots of  fun for girls and boys. Please wear a black leotard, pink tights, and black tap shoes for girls. Boys should wear a white top, black bottoms, and black tap shoes. Dancewear and shoes are available for purchase at Kinetics Academy of Dance.

Jazzy TapA little bit of Jazz, a little bit of tap. Go Broadway in this fun class for 7-10 year old beginners. Please wear a black leotard, pink tights, and black tap shoes for girls. Boys should wear a white top, black bottoms, and black tap shoes. 

Ballet FitnessBallet with  a  twist!  This  class  includes  a  traditional  ballet  barre,  and  some  center work, but adds the extra fitness component of a “floor barre”, or ballet specific core toning exercises. This is a beautiful way to increase your strength and fitness level.

MusicChico Community BandPick up your  instrument, dust  it off and get  ready  to play! There are no auditions for  this  band,  just  sign  up  and  come  on  down  to  Tuesday  night  rehearsals.  The Chico  Community  Band,  a  wind  and  percussion  ensemble  with  approximately  40 participants,  is  open  to  musicians  ranging  from  teens  to  seniors.  Formed  before World War  II,  the Band continues  to practice a  repertoire of marches,  show  tunes, and  innovative  pieces  by  current  composers  that  it  performs  for  local  audiences. Performances  include Memorial Day, 4th of  July, and Veterans Day celebrations, as well  as  a  Friday  Night  Concert  in  the  Park  and  a  winter  concert.  Call  Bob  Eicher at  342-6873  for  additional  information.  Performance  schedule  available  at  www.chicorec.com. Chico Junior High School, Band Room 503.

Coach of the Quarter:For our Winter 2012-2013 youth basketball season, we have two coaches Coach of the Quarter. Both coaches have displayed endless amounts of  “love of the game” and have been standouts in their interactions with players and staff. 

Coach Jeff Zelenksi has been coaching with CARD  for 5  seasons.  Jeff grew up with a father who coached basketball, and had the opportunity to play through college. He relays his extensive basketball knowledge by connecting with each player on his team, regardless of their skill level, to encourage their basketball development. Regardless  of  this  teams  skill  level,  Jeff  shows  unfaltering  sportsmanship  on  the sideline and has a positive finesse in dealing with different situations that arise. Coach Zelenski takes pride in his practice plans to make sure each of his players reaches their potential during the season…and of course, has mandatory high fives on his teams! 

Coach Lynnette Ford has been coaching with CARD for 2 seasons. She gives a “love of the game” by getting all of her players excited about basketball. Lynnette has a special gift for making sure that all of her players know that they are different, special,  and have a  crucial part on  the  team and  the  court. Coach Lynnette works hard on making sure everyone knows that hard work, dedication and teamwork can enhance their feelings of success not only on the basketball court but in life. Lynnette also remembers  that  the ultimate goal of  the season  is  to not win, but  to help her players grow as individuals and understand what they can achieve as a team. 

FREE Summer Jr. Giants Program(K-6th grade)Jr.  Giants  is  a  FREE,  non-competitive  summer  baseball  program  for  boys  and girls,  sponsored by  the San Francisco Giants Community Fund and  the Chico Area Recreation and Park District.  Junior Giants is a great opportunity for boys and girls going into the K-6th grade to learn the skills of baseball in a positive and fun format. Junior Giants  is more  than  just a baseball program,  it has character development, health, education, and violence prevention programs within it as well! Informational flyer available online at www.chicorec.com/Athletics.

SUMMER Elementary and Jr. High Volleyball Leagues (5th-8th grade)Don’t  let your child get bored  this  summer! Sign  them up  for our youth volleyball league for players entering the 5th-8th grade in Fall 2013. Practices will concentrate on skill building, setting, passing, spiking, digging and serving…so the games can be  that much more  enjoyable!  Teams will  practice  at  least  once  per week  and are dependent upon available gym space. Space is limited in this program…so make sure to register early to guarantee your player’s spot!

FALL High School Volleyball Leagues (9th-12th)Don’t let your child give up on their love of volleyball because they are in high school! New to CARD, is this awesome high school volleyball league that will allow players to not only continue growing as a player, but give them the opportunity to be part of a team! All teams will be formed using the team formation policy. Teams will practice at least once per week and are dependant upon available gym space.

FALL Little Hoopsters Basketball Program/Mini-League (K-2nd)This  instructional  program  is  open  to  all  youth  in  K-2  grade.    Coaches  will  work with players the first 2-3 weeks to introduce the sport of basketball using basic skill techniques and formations.  The last 3-4 weeks there will be 20 minute practices and 40 minute formal games each day. Fundamentals and simple game strategy will be taught throughout the entire program.  Show up the first day and be ready to play! You will not be contacted by a coach for this program. Program site: Community Park Field House. General youth sports jersey is optional, but highly recommended (can be purchased at the CARD Office for $12).

Competitive and Recreation options in most leagues to ensure better league quality: CARD  is  being  proactive  in  attempting  to make  sure more  teams are matched up with  teams of  similar abilities.    In popular  leagues, there are Recreation and Competitive options on each night of play. 

League information, registration dates and rule packets:  All  league information will be posted on our website www.chicorec.com and www.Teamsideline.com/chico a minimum of 2 weeks prior to the registration deadline. CARD makes every effort  to keep dates  similar  from year  to  year. However, minor changes are possible.

Each league has a set number of spaces available for teams. Those numbers  are  determined  by field  or  facility  availability,  night  of  play  and level of ability. Registration is frist come, first served. Once leagues are full a waitlist will be started

League MovementTeams may be subject  to move  from their  league of choice at  the discretion of  the Recreation Supervisor  if  it  is deemed  for  the benefit of  the CARD softball program.  Prior history and records will be considered when it comes to league placement.  Spring or Summer league champions MAY be moved up to a higher league for the subsequent season if also deemed appropriate and teams who struggle in a given league may also be moved down. The goal here is to facilitate proper league placement over the course of time, while teams may not consider themselves  a “B” or “C” level team, they may be one of the top teams playing on that evening and it may be necessary that they play in that league

Picnic RentalsYou no longer need to go and “stake out” your picnic site ahead of time. CARD is now accepting reservations for picnic areas.   While there are still several picnic areas that are available on a first-come, first-serve basis, the picnic sites listed are now available for rent. These sites are in high demand and offer users the “peace of mind” when planning a child’s birthday party, family reunion or association gathering.  To  make  a  reservation,  please  visit  the  CARD  Office  located  at  545 Vallombrosa Avenue.

Currently,  this guarantee applies  to all of our programs except Adult Leagues, Facility Rentals,  Trips  and Tours,  and  all  grant/scholarship  funded  programs.  These programs have specific policies that apply.  Your complete satisfaction with these  programs  is  equally  valued,  and  we  will  work  with  you  to  resolve  your concerns.

To receive a credit, repeat a program, or obtain a refund, please contact us  in writing, by phone, by email, or  in person.   Requests must be made within  ten (10) business days after the last program meeting.  Your receipt, cancelled check or proof of I.D. may be required.  Refund checks will be processed within fifteen (15) business days. 

Cancellation PolicyIn  the event CARD needs  to cancel a class or program due  to  low enrollment, inclement weather, or any other unforeseen circumstance, you will receive a full refund  of  the  registration  fee.   We understand  that unexpected  circumstances may also arise resulting in a need for you to withdraw from a class or program.  If  so, please notify us prior  to  the first day of  the class, and you will  receive a full  refund.   Unfortunately,  due  to  the nature of  some of our programs,  there are  some  exceptions.    Please  refer  to  the  program  for  additional  information and exceptions.   Requests  for  refunds or  transfers may be made  in person, by email or by phone. Your receipt, cancelled check or proof of identification may be required.  Refund checks will be processed within fifteen (15) business days.
