The Friar’s Creek Trail is the newest addition to Temple’s fantastic trail system . It was constructed with a grant from the Texas Parks & Wildlife Association . The path consists of just over a mile in new trail work, but it represents a new direction for all future Temple trails .

Friar’s Creek Trail links two existing trails in South Temple and Silverstone Parks to create a combined 2 .25 mile walkway . For most of its length, the trail traces the beautiful Friar’s Creek .

New interpretive signage was recently installed that enhances the experience of visitors by explaining vegetation and wildlife in the area and chronicling the efforts of the Temple Parks & Leisure Services Department and area sci-entists and volunteers to reclaim and preserve the creek bed .

Take a walk along this groundbreaking trail and enjoy some of the most beautiful scenery that Temple has to offer .

Step AerobicsFree to Summit Members! Step Aerobics is distinguished from other forms of aerobic exercise by its use of an elevated platform, commonly called a “step.” The height can be tailored to indi-vidual needs by inserting risers under the step. The “basic” step involves stepping first with one foot and then the other on top of the step and then stepping off with the first foot and then the other back to the floor. Step aerobics helps burn calories, helps maintain weight, provides endurance training and provides flexi-bilty training that enhances joint movements – all of which helps maintain the health of your cardiovascular system. The workout is fun and credited for being a great stress-buster.Monday and Wednesday 12:15pm & 5:30pmTuesday and Thursday 10:15am & 8pm

Pilates Free to Summit Members! Some fitness programs are fads that quickly arrive and leave the scene before you have a chance to buy the second T-shirt. Not so for Pilates. Joseph Pilates first presented his theory in the early 19th century. In 2010, Pilates is alive, vibrant and a fundamental component of a strong exercise program. The central aim of Pilates is to create a fusion of mind and body, so that without even engaging the mind, the body will move with economy, grace, and balance. Bring those skills to the daily table in your life and you will enjoy unprecedented benefits that will surely improve your total wellness. Monday 8 a.m. Tuesday 9:15 a.m.Wednesday 8 a.m. Thursday 9:15 a.m.

Hi Lo AerobicsFree to Summit Members! Is Hi-Lo Aerobics for you? It cer-tainly is. This particular aerobic conditioning program allows exercise enthusiasts to personalize the style of their workouts by making choices along the way on what feels best during the activ-ity. The “Hi” portion of the workout requires both feet to leave the ground while performing step, pivoting, jumping and twisting moves that improve muscle toning, strength, agility and balance. The “Lo” portion of the workout keeps one foot firmly planted on the floor to improve balance, while enjoying less of an impact on bones and joints. Participants choose between Hi or Lo during the movement as their body and fitness levels dictate. The end result is a challenging workout for everyone involved, including the long-time fitness enthusiast and the beginner! Tuesday and Thursday 10:15am

ZumbaSummer is hot, Summit Zumba is hotter! Join Courtney, Jana and Lisa for the workout that is a PARTY! The Zumba party goes on six days per week at the Summut Family Fitness Center. How to Recognize Tree HazardsTrees provide many benefits to our homes and city, but when trees fall and injure people or damage property they can become a liability. Taking care of tree hazards before something happens reduces your exposure and makes your property safer.

What is a hazard tree? A hazard tree is a tree that has a structural defect that may cause the tree or a portion of the tree to fall on someone or something of value.

How do I recognize potential hazards trees? To look for a hazardous condition inspect each tree systematically. Start by scanning the top or crown of the tree, using binoculars if necessary. After reviewing the crown, look downward along the trunk, and finally carefully examine the root zone.

What do I look for in the crown of the tree?•Are there dead limbs? Loggers call these “widow-

makers” and treat them with great respect. Homeowner should do the same. Dead limbs are an accident waiting to happen and those larger that one inch diameter should be removed.

•Do some branches cross or rub? Branches that cross or rub lead to weak spots. These should be pruned off as soon as they are spotted.

•What’s the tree’s history? Sometimes past events warn of potential trouble. Previous topping will likely result in weakly attached regrowth. Broken branches with stubs un-pruned, or sprout-like regrowth after storm damage, sets the stage for breakage. Recent seemingly unexplained loss of large limbs may be a sign of internal problems.

• Is the tree dead or dying? If the overall health of the tree has been going down for some time or if the tree is com-pletely dead then it should be promptly removed.

What do I look for on the trunk of the tree?•Look for wounds or cracks in the trunk? Any wound is an opening for

decay. Wounds extending into the ground, including lightning scars, should be examined regularly to make sure there is no rot starting up. If two vertical cracks appear on opposite sides of the tree it can be a sign of root injury or breakage.

•Are there any other signs of decay? Clues to internal decay of the trunk can be cavities, disfiguration (cankers), and the fruiting bodies of fungi (conks).

•Forked trunks are signals of potential weakness. This is especially dangerous when bark grows into the narrow crotch (called “included bark”). This situation can also encourage decay indicated by sap or pitch being extruded.

•What about balance? Leaning or lopsided trees present more of a hazard than those growing vertically, but if a tree has always grown off center it generally is not an undue risk.

What do I look for in the root zone?• Signs of root decay are often insidious

and difficult to detect, and most of the time, just sneaky. Sometimes the work of the organism causing decay goes unnoticed because the small feeder roots go on absorbing water and nutrients. To detect root decay look carefully for “mushrooms” on or near the base of the tree. If found, or if root trouble is suspected, have an arborist dig up some roots to sample for decay organisms.

•Are any roots severed? Trenching or construction within the root zone is a major cause of hazard trees. The problem is two-fold. First, severed roots lose their ability to support the trunk and crown, especially if located on the wind-ward side of the tree. Second, severed roots and open wounds that invite decay organisms.

Memorial Tree ProgramThe Memorial Tree Program is your opportunity to pay a long-lasting tribute to an individ-ual or occasion by planting a tree in his or her honor. At the same time, your donation will enhance your favorite park and support the Temple Parks Foundation. Memorial Trees are planted in public parks so everyone can enjoy the shade, beauty and enjoyment a living tree provides. Commemorate a graduation, birth, passing, wedding, anniversary, or any special recognition. Planting a tree in a city park is a wonderful way to honor a loved one and also provide a gift for the whole community.

About Trees and Markers

Parks & Leisure Services staff will work with you to select a Memorial Tree that will adhere to the tree-planting plan adopted by the City of Temple. Species of trees planted will be determined based upon planting lo-cation and type of tree needed for the cho-sen park site.

• Bald Cypress • Mountain Laurel• Chinese Pistache • Possumhaw Holly• Chinquapin Oak • Red Bud• Crape Myrtle • Red Oak• Live Oak • Vitex

A custom-made plaque will be installed at your memorial tree site. Markers are made with durable, outdoor rated materials to en-sure a lasting recognition for many years to come.

Interested in volunteering with Temple Parks & Leisure Services? Get added to our e-mail list? Call (254) 298-5774

Name: Janet Stark Day Job: Retired Truck Driver How long have you been a Parks & Leisure Services volunteer?

I have been volunteering for about three years now. I started as some-

one who just went to the Sammons Community Center, but I noticed

that they needed some help, so I just stepped up to help. I didn’t

wait to be asked.

When you are not volunteering at the Sammons,

what are you doing? I just love spending time there: talking to people,

playing cards and exercising. I really like to play

Hand and Foot...that’s a card game.

What is your proudest moment as a volunteer? Raising my ducks and taking care of them. A staff

member and I raise a few ducks a piece. It was

nice to participate in encouraging those lives.

Do you have any advice for someone thinking

about volunteering? You won’t regret it. Whatever you put in, you

get back tenfold. It is a feeling you just can’t

describe. It makes you feel warm . You just feel

loved and appreciated.

Fit FactYou don’t need to fully ditch your outdoor workout ritual if you can commit to exercising in the early morning hours before the sun’s rays become intense . The great pay off of working out in the morning is that you get to smell the fresh dew, watch the sun as it rises in the sky, enjoy the tranquility of your neighborhood before it fully awakens, and you become energized early on to face the rest of your day .

Adopt A Park The City of Temple encompasses parks, gardens, and trails. These areas provide our community with an en-hanced quality of life through recreational spaces, picnic spots, exercise opportunities, and community gathering areas.

Temple has a remarkable 47 developed parks and special use areas. The parks supply animal habitat, flood con-trol, climate control and oxygen producing trees. These features are vital to maintaining a healthy lifestyle for our community. Parks, gardens, and trails also help at-tract businesses to our area which improves Temple’s economy. Temple’s Parks and Leisure Services Depart-ment works diligently to provide citizens with clean, at-tractive, and well maintained areas. Due to the number of parks in Temple, it is difficult to keep each park in its highest condition. With your enthusiasm, willingness, and effort we can keep Temple’s parks in their prime condition. This program is easy to participate in!

We ask the following of each adopter:

• Each group/individual must fill out one Adopt-A-Park partnership form

• Each participant needs to fill out and return a release form before the workday date

• Each group needs one contact person

• Each group/individual should volunteer in the park at least 3 days out of the year

• The first workday will need to be scheduled with an Adopt-A-Park staff

• Volunteer hours need to be tracked and submitted to the Parks and Leisure Services Administration Office

A sign will be placed in an adopter’s park to recognize the groups/individuals. Adopters will also receive a certificate of recognition and an invitation to the Parks and Leisure Services Volunteer Dinner. Organizations that volunteer for 100 hours and individuals and families that volunteer for 35 hours will receive the Neighbor to Nature plaque.

Temple Parks FoundationThe Temple Parks Foundation was created in 2001 to assess needs within the park system and accomplish goals that can-not be obtained through the City due to funding and time constraints. As a not-for-profit 501(c) (3) organization, the foundation funds specific projects within the community and was instrumental in the construction of “The Pool of Tears” Veteran’s Memorial. The foundation also serves as the reposi-tory for Whistle Stop Playground donations that are contrib-uted towards the upkeep of the playground. The organiza-tion’s mission is to enhance the quality of life for Temple’s residents and visitors by improving the park system and pro-viding resources to beautify and maintain public parks in our city. If you would like to make a contribution to this effort, please call 254.298.5690 for more information or visit www.templeparks-foundation.org.
