Why do we need to be educated?

v According to Kelly Gallagher, author of Readicide(2009), we are committing four educational “sins”:v Valuing the development of the test-taker more than the

development of the reader;v Limiting authentic reading experiences;v Overteaching books; andv Underteaching books. (p. 5)

v For this reason, teachers continuously pour informationinto students’ brains without allowing them the time toabsorb any of it.

• The time provided is enough to allow themto enjoy the reading and not stress out.– Also known as DEAR or SSR time.

• When the entireschool decides to seta reading goal of1,000 books, MissMalarkey must workto find the perfectbook for the difficultreaders in her class.

• In addition to allowing students the time toread independently, support has also beengiven to motivating students to readthrough adult read-alouds.

• Collaboration of classroom teachers andschool librarians is becoming more necessaryin order to ensure that curriculumrequirements for teaching state standards arebeing met.v In an article by Terry Young pertaining to collection development in the

school library, he states that “[w]hen the school librarian is activelyinvolved in the instructional program of the school, collaborating withteachers and teaching information literacy skills, correlation studiesshow that academic achievement is higher” (Young, 2010, p. 20).

• Findings in a study done by Ken Haycock (2011)reveal that Canadian schools that maintainlibraries that are “easily accessed, well-funded,well-staffed, well-managed, well-stocked,integrated and heavily used” correlate to highertest performance than those schools that do notplace a lot of emphasis on their library mediacenter (p. 37).
