STUDENT INVENTS A WAY TO FULLY CHARGE APHONE BATTERY IN ONE MINUTE

You know the scenario. You’re getting ready to head out for a night on the town. Everything, for

once, is going perfectly according to plan. You whip out your phone to let friends know you’re

heading out, and that’s when you realize: whoops, forgot to charge the phone.

Inevitably, you’ll probably throw it on the charger for as many minutes as you can afford before

heading out, but settle on the idea that you will be incommunicado during the latter portion of the

night. That is, unless teenage innovator Eesha Khare’s creation sees the light of day. As told by

SlashGear, the 18-year-old developed a means of fully charging a cellphone battery in — count ‘em

— as little as 30 seconds.

The soon-to-be Harvard student entered her innovation into this year’s Intel International Science

and Engineering Fair, in which she was named one of three winners, earning her a cash prize of

$50,000. The technology that she created may even help power electric cars. It’s so sophisticated

that, despite keeping tight lips on the ordeal, Khare has been approached by Google, which has

shown some serious interest.

As of now, Khare says she plans to use her prize money to help fund her education at Harvard,

where she hopes to continue researching her project. But she currently has no plans to sell her

technology, though it seems like she is keeping her options open.

As presented at the science fair, her creation charges an LED, but she says that it is flexible. It can

easily adapt so that it can be used in flexible displays and even in fabric. Right now, it can hold

10,000 recharging cycles, which is far better from the standard rechargeable battery, which can

only withstand around 1,000.

We’re eager to see the day that we can plug our phones in (or just rest them on a wireless

charging dock), and less than a minute later, be good to head out the door, worry-free.

So she’s using electrical double-layer capacitors… As I have said in the past. Batteries are not the future.

Capacitors are. While EDLC’s have features similar to Chemical Batteries, the differences are drastic. I

wonder which EDLC design she was using… The sad thing about her project is… It’s nothing new, and it’s

not feasible in everyday devices. As the size of an EDLC would need to be about 100 times larger than that

of a conventional battery. She got excited that she could light an LED which takes very little energy needed. If

they just solve that size problem, we’d have it made.

Capacitors people. It’s the future. Stop thinking about Lithium Ion Batteries.

Graphene supercapacitors are where it’s at:

This is only even vaguely impressive because she’s in high school. Graphene supercapacitors are insanely

simple to manufacture (you can even get simple instructions on Youtube), and she’s made no significant

innovation to the technology here. It’s an exciting technology largely because it is so simple, and since this

bright young girl has essentially repackaged what UCLA grad student Maher El-Kady already discovered (she

even used the same testing precess with the LED), I’m finding it hard to be impressed.

Well, technically a teacher had done the research for this a year or so back and she just simply adapted it intoa more practical application. I’m not against it, I’m just stating that the title is a little misleading.

She needs to sell that so I can get that sweet cell phone charging, or she needs to give it away to the

people!!

True, but so far there is no large scale improvement. Li-Ion can hold more. No to mention if you arc a super

capacitor how screwed you would be. Dropping your phone in water would be a lot worse. Batteries would

need to be charged more often most likely, but I suppose a couple 10 minute charges might be better than 1

2 hour charge. If you scale this up you would either need more charging time or a LOT more power. LED’s

draw a lot less power than a phone.
