LOCALREACH STREET

From the editorWelcome to the March issue of LocalReach. I can hardly believe that two months of 2016 have already passed – this year is really flying by. During a trip to my local supermarket at the weekend I saw all of the shelves being filled up with Easter eggs, which is a wonderful sign that the lighter, warmer days will soon be upon us.

If you are a local club, don’t forget to send me your news so I can give you some free editorial in future issues – LocalReach is the ideal way to reach residents in Street, Glastonbury and the surrounding villages. I would also be keen to hear about all events that are happening in the local area, e.g. bingo evenings, regular meetings/gatherings, sports fixtures/events etc.

I look forward to sharing all of your news and recipes with readers next month, but in the meantime enjoy reading this issue.

The Editor.

Please send your editorial to [email protected]. The deadline for the April 2016 issue is March 14th.

Investing in Property – Do it now before Stamp Duty changes take effect Spring is coming and, for some people, now might be a good time to invest in another property whether it be your own home, a buy to let property or buying a business premises.

In the new Tax Year (from April 6th 2016) Stamp Duty Land Tax is increasing by 3% on anyone buying a second property. For example if you were buying a £150,000 property to rent out then the Stamp Duty Land Tax would be £7500 whereas at the moment you would just pay £300 on this purchase.

Here at Acorn Solicitors we specialise in Property transactions for individuals, families and businesses. We have the Law Society’s Conveyancing Quality Scheme accreditation and are on most mortgage panels. We have a wealth of experience in dealing with Property matters and aim to help take the stress away. We are a local family firm and our aim is to give you a personal service where you are a name and not a number.

How do you know investing in property is the right thing for you? We have found a couple of points on the Money Advice Service which may help you out. Investing in property may be right for you if you:-1. Prefer investments that feel more tangible than stocks and shares2. Are willing to tie up your money for a long period of time3. Understand property prices can go down as well as up 4. Are willing to take the risk that you may not earn a profit on your investment5. Understand and accept the additional risks that go along with borrowing money to buy a property6. Understand and accept the costs and time involved in owning and running a property and the

impact that this will have on your potential returnIf you are investing or thinking of investing please give us a call and we will give you a quote for

the legal work we can do for you.

‘The Ladykillers’Award winning group Street Theatre are celebrating 20 years of bringing quality drama to the Strode Theatre stage and raise the curtain on their special year in March by treating audiences to a hilarious new version of one of the nation's favourite comedy films, ‘The Ladykillers’.

This new stage adaptation has been written by Graham Linehan (writer of comedy classics ‘Father Ted’ and ‘The IT Crowd’) and received critical acclaim during its successful 2012 run in London’s West End.

Posing as amateur musicians, Professor Marcus and his gang of criminal misfits rent rooms in the lopsided house of sweet but strict Mrs Wilberforce. The villains plot to involve her unwittingly in Marcus' brilliantly conceived heist job. The police are left stumped but Mrs Wilberforce becomes wise to their ruse and Marcus concludes that there is only one way to keep the old lady quiet. Mrs W. is alone with five desperate men. But who will be forced to face the music? This Street Theatre production will be directed by Peter Wintle and produced by Paul Townsend.

Come and see it. You will leave the theatre with a smile on your face.

Elmhurst visit from Shane Lynch of BoyzoneThere was a treat for the children (and some of the parents) last Friday as Shane Lynch of Boyzone visited the school to talk to the children about the difficulties he experienced at school and how this didn't stop him achieving great things in his life. He was accompanied by Matt Fiddes of Matt Fiddes Martial Arts. The assembly started with a demonstration from three Elmhurst children, Evelyn and Oliver Wigley and Marcus Haigh, who attend the Matt Fiddes Martial Arts school.

Shane talked to the children about his life and how he struggled at school because of dyslexia, which meant he found reading and writing really difficult. He told the children about the impact this had on him along with other issues at school such as bullying. He also explained how to overcome these problems, telling them that failure is good as we learn from it, and not giving up means that in the end you reach your goals. Shane also talked about all of the experiences he has had in many different parts of the world as a result of the success of Boyzone.

There was also a question and answer session where the children put a variety of questions to Shane which were answered brilliantly. Shane had a fantastic rapport with the children and in addition to answering their questions he also talked to them about discipline, respect and focus which can all be gained from martial arts which also help you to reach your potential.

Give BloodThe next blood donating sessions will be held on 17th March and 21st April, at the Salvation Army hall in Goswell Road, Street. Session times are 1pm – 3.15pm and 4.45pm – 7pm.

Varifocal lenses—the facts!Varifocal lenses are superb lenses for general wear allowing you to see distant, intermediate and near objects clearly. Spectacles can therefore be worn all the

time. The field of view for intermediate and near vision is reduced when compared to a single focus lens. For this reason many people have a supplementary pair of single focus lenses to run alongside their varifocals. These are used for specific visual tasks.

The optical quality of varifocal lenses varies considerably, as does their price tag. Lens designs change from basic rudimentary designs right the way through to bespoke lenses created for the individual person - and they obviously perform differently. The latter, of course, give much wider fields of view and better optics. It is commonly thought that there are 3 types of varifocal lens design, but this sales talk is used by some Opticians in an attempt to simplify things. In truth, each lens manufacturer has 4 or 5 lens designs in their portfolio and there are numerous lens manufacturers. People are more likely to adapt to wearing varifocal lenses comfortably with the more individualised or more modern lens designs. It is best to check all of the options which are available and to discuss these options with your Optician.

LAMBINGFun Day

20%discount with this advert

Lambing Fun DayAfter the heavy rainfall and dark skies the winter months have brought with them, the lighter evenings, glimpse of a snowdrop or two, and new-born lambs jumping around the local fields, are the first signs of spring.

At Bridgwater College’s Cannington Centre, lambing season is in full swing. If you haven’t been to the College’s Lambing Fun Day event before, then put the date in your diary for a real treat! As the name suggests, it really is a great day out for all the family, and takes place this year on Sunday 13 March, 11am to 4pm at Rodway Farm in Cannington, TA5 2PJ.

The event improves year on year, with more to see and do than ever before, a real favourite of the young and young at heart! Tickets can be bought on the day, or visitors can receive a 20% discount if bought in advance online or on production of an advert. Advance tickets can be bought through the College’s online store: www.bridgwater.ac.uk.

There are lots of activities lined up for the day, with sheep shearing, milking demonstrations, ferret racing, tractor trailer rides, Somerset Vintage Club Ltd’s machinery displays plus many more. There will also be marquees dedicated to food and drink and children’s activities, and of course a chance to see and hold the ever-so-cute new-born lambs.

Jason Gunningham, Assistant Principal for Land-based Studies at the College says: “This event is always very popular and a great way for the community to see the College’s working farm in Cannington. So many people put on their wellies and join us for the day, immersing themselves in all the activities and watching the demonstrations. The farmers market will be especially popular this year with visitors browsing the product stalls and purchasing local produce.

“We’ve often had lambs born during the event day, and it is a wonderful opportunity for visitors to see the new-borns and enjoy a cuddle with some of the more confident lambs. The feedback we receive from the public is always very positive, and we are looking forward to this year’s event and welcoming many new visitors to Rodway Farm.”

ApprenticeshipsWith the National Apprenticeship Week 14 – 18 March fast approaching, the team at Bridgwater College is looking forward to celebrating the success of our Apprentices.

Matt Doe, a Bridgwater College Electrical Apprentice has recently won gold at the regional heats of the SPARKS UK Electrical Apprentice of the Year competition, which was held at Bridgwater College’s Riverside House.

Matt, from Weston-Super-Mare, is studying a Level 3 Advanced Electrotechnical Apprenticeship at the College and was nominated for the competition by his College mentor Roger Rogers. Students from more than 60 College’s from around the country are competing in the regional heats throughout January and February, in the hope of progressing on to the Grand Final at Stephenson College in Leicestershire in March. The winner of the Grand Final will not only be crowned UK Electrical Apprentice of the Year, but will also walk away with electrical testing equipment worth more than £1,300 from leading manufacturer Megger. The winning College will also receive a package of electrical testers worth £1,000.

The 10 students who took part in the electrical competition were faced with a series of practical tasks to complete throughout the day. The standard of competition was extremely high, and judged under the watchful eye of Darren Oates from EAL, a specialist skills partner and awarding organisation for the industry.

Roger Rogers, Internal Verifier for Construction at Bridgwater College, said, “We are extremely proud of Matt’s achievement. He was the obvious choice to represent Bridgwater College in this competition. Matt has also been selected for the WorldSkills Squad UK along with Harvey Hemming and David Sparks of Bridgwater College, so this competition gave him the valuable experience he needs to hopefully represent the country in 2017.”

If you would like more information about the range of apprenticeships supported at Bridgwater College please contact our Information and Guidance team on 01278 441234, or visit www.bridgwater.ac.uk.

Easy ways to make space in your binAmid debate about kerbside collection change proposals, the benefits to residents in Street, Glastonbury and Walton of getting rid of more waste faster have gained far less attention than they deserve.

The plan includes adding lots of extra materials for weekly recycling: plastic pots, tubs and trays (such as yoghurt pots, margarine and ice cream tubs, and fruit trays), plus all food and drink cartons, small electrical items, and household batteries.

The cartons – like those made by Tetra Pak – and all that plastic packaging, may be lightweight but they are very bulky, taking up significant space in families’ bins. Many have long urged that they be recycled at the kerbside in Somerset to slim their rubbish bins.

By making it far easier to recycle much more and get rid of it faster, the planned improvements could well see the weight of recycling up by more than a quarter, and the weight of waste in rubbish bins fall by the same amount.

And with no cartons and much less plastic, rubbish volumes will shrink far more. That will curb bulging bins, fly-tips or overflowing waste. These were the impressive results in trials with more than 1,000 Somerset families of all shapes and sizes.

One resident said: “I was amazed how little rubbish was left once all the additional materials were recycled.” No wonder trial families gave the changes an overwhelming 86% approval.

They also liked new container options, including tough space-saving squash-flat recycling bags. And the proposals include additional capacity and support for those with extra needs, from children in nappies to those using adult hygiene products.

Along with welcome efforts to end the use of landfill in Somerset, these plans – expected to be phased in over two years – would save millions that surely can be better spent on people than their rubbish.

For more on wasting far less, recycling much more and saving plenty of cash, including the proposals for extra weekly collections, see www.somersetwaste.gov.uk.

Try something new this spring……..Holy Trinity Street and Walton, along with Street Mission Church and St. Andrew’s, Compton Dundon, meet every Sunday for prayer and worship. There are a variety of service styles on offer each week and the group would love to see new faces. Service details can be found on the noticeboards outside each of the churches and every morning service starts at 10am.

Room for HireStreet Parish Council has rooms available for hire. The rooms are in the centre of Street so close to car parks/bus stops and can seat up to 55 people.

Hire rates are ‘reasonable’ – for further information please call 01458 440588.

Local slimmers can enjoy chocolate and lose weight this EasterMost of the millions of people in the UK who would like to lose weight think they have to avoid chocolate temptations this Easter. But slimmers at the Glastonbury and Street Slimming World groups know there is no need to turn the Easter bunny away.

In fact, Slimming World Consultant Jo Stone, says members are encouraged to enjoy a little of what they fancy as part of the club’s healthy eating plan. "Easter can seem like an extremely difficult time for people on strict diets trying to slim down in time for summer, as Easter eggs line the supermarket shelves, adverts for chocolate treats dominate TV screens and the smell of freshly-baked hot cross buns and cakes seems to fill every room!" says Jo.

Slimming World’s famous Food Optimising healthy eating plan allows slimmers to satisfy their appetite on filling, low-energy-dense foods like pasta, rice, potatoes, fruit and vegetables, lean meat, poultry and fish. At Slimming World these foods are called ‘Free Foods’ because members can enjoy them freely to satisfy their appetite without having to weigh, count or measure. The plan also encourages members to enjoy a little bit of what that fancy, whatever that may be, meaning they don’t have to give up any of their favourite treats – including chocolate – to lose weight.

Self-confessed chocoholic Dawn joined Slimming World in September 2010 and has now lost 6st. Dawn credits the support of the Glastonbury group for her slimming success. "To top it off the support I get from Jo and the rest of the group is unbelievable, I really look forward to my Tuesday evening group each week. Having them there for me every week is so valuable and my weight loss wouldn’t be the same without it. We share tips and ideas and support each other to overcome challenges, and stick to the healthy changes we’ve committed to. It’s not a diet, it’s a healthy lifestyle – as well as changing my eating habits I’m much more active and have started walking regularly. It’s great to see people that become your friends achieve their weight-loss dreams too. I can’t champion the Slimming World plan enough and would recommend joining to anyone in Glastonbury and Street that wants to lose weight and keep it off for good."

Easter at Street Country MarketThe producers at Street Country Market are busily getting ready for Easter making seasonal specialities such as Easter cakes, cards and Simnel cakes, whilst our craft makers have been busy knitting and sewing unique items. The almost forgotten skill of smocking can be seen on some garments and is performed to such a high standard that even Grandma would be impressed.

The green fingered producers offer a range of locally grown plants and vegetables plus some spring flowering plants to brighten your day. The market’s cooks are known for their scrumptious products but to avoid disappointment, come early or place an order for the next week.

Amongst the other products offered are: walnuts; honey; jams; marmalade; chutneys; and wood turned items.

Also, if you are looking for that special gift, the market’s local producers will even make an item just for you. So come along to the Crispin Hall on Thursday mornings between 9.30am and 11.30am where the welcome is warm and the ‘food miles’ virtually zero.

For more information, contact Bob on 01458 442957 or email [email protected].

Leg of lamb in hay with lavenderPrep - Less than 30 minutes • Cooking time - Over 2 hours • Serves - Serves 6-8This unusual approach to roast lamb is very simple and results in tender, aromatic meat perfect for Sunday lunch. The hay needed is available from pet shops - ask for ‘eating’ hay that’s edible for horses. Ingredients• 1 x 2.7kg/5lb10oz leg of lamb• 1 small handful lavender,

preferably freshly picked• ½ bag hay• 50g/2oz butter, softened,

plus an extra knob for the broccoli

• 10 King Edward potatoes, peeled and cut into 2 or 3 pieces

• 75g/2¾oz beef dripping or vegetable oil

• 75ml/2¾fl oz malt vinegar• 25g/1oz caster sugar

• 1 large bunch fresh mint leaves, finely chopped

• 400g/14oz purple sprouting broccoli

• sea salt and freshly ground black pepper

Method1. Preheat the oven to 180C/160C Fan/Gas 4. 2. Pierce the leg of lamb 10-12 times all over

using the point of a sharp knife, then insert the lavender sprigs into the holes.

3. Use the hay to stuff a large, deep-sided roasting tray, one that’s large enough for the whole leg of lamb. Sprinkle over the remaining lavender leaves.

4. Place the leg of lamb onto the hay, then rub it all over with the softened butter, and season, to taste, with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Cover the roasting tray with aluminium foil.

5. Roast the lamb in the oven for 2-3 hours (for tender meat with a trace of pink), or until cooked to your liking, then remove it from the oven and set aside to rest for at least 30 minutes.

6. Meanwhile, bring the potatoes to the boil in a large pan of salted water and continue to boil for 2 minutes. Drain into a colander and shake them around to fluff up the edges.

7. When the lamb has about an hour left to cook, scrape the beef dripping into a large roasting tray, add the potatoes and season with salt flakes. Add them to the oven and roast for 25-30 minutes, or until golden-brown and crisp on their undersides, then turn them to coat them in the fat and continue to roast for a further 20-30 minutes, or until golden-brown and crisp all over.

8. Bring the vinegar and sugar to a simmer in a non-reactive saucepan, then remove the pan from the heat and stir in the chopped mint. Season with a pinch of salt.

9. Just before serving, cook the broccoli until just tender in a pan of salted, boiling water (about 2-3 minutes). Drain and season, to taste, with salt and freshly ground black pepper and a knob of butter.

10.To serve, transfer the lamb to a serving platter and carve into slices. Serve with the roast potatoes and purple sprouting broccoli alongside, and drizzle over the mint sauce.

Street Neighbourhood Watch AssociationAnnual General Meeting 2016

The 16th Annual General Meeting of the Street Neighbourhood Watch Association will be held in the Bashu Room of Brookside School on Wednesday 9th March 2016, the meeting will start at 7pm with the formal business, followed by a talk from Avon & Somerset Police & Crime Commissioner, Sue Mountstevens.

The Street Neighbourhood Watch Association has had a year of good and bad news, the retirement of a long serving executive member John Crole, the sad loss

of a long serving coordinator and the sudden death of our Community Police officer, has been tempered by the starting of new schemes with many new members, and the participation in the very successful Merriman Park Fun Day and the Street Christmas Cracker. At the AGM there will be information on crime prevention, the latest on Cold and Bogus callers, how to spot and deal with Scams and the various types of Fraud. 2016 will see the Street Neighbourhood Watch canvassing the areas of Street that do not have a scheme and consolidating the existing schemes.

Open to members and non-members, but only members can vote during the formal part of the meeting. Any SNWA member who would like to join the executive committee as a member or an officer should contact the Chair at: [email protected] or via our web site contact page at www.streetneighbourhoodwatch.btck.co.uk
