SEPTEMBER 2019
Greetings Booker Nation,
We have a lot of exciting events taking place throughout our learning community. The School of
Distinction Ceremony, the CFES Ivy League College Workshop, VPA Performances, Parent Universities and much more. Above all, I am so glad that we have hope in our vision of Inspiring Tomorrow’s
Leaders. This hope leads us to believe that our vision is truly possible.
Napolean said that leaders are dealers in hope. We are all leaders in our own right and therefore, regardless of how challenging a situation may be, we can and will overcome. Often times, when we face
difficulty mastering a skill, we will gravitate towards a negative moment. However, great leaders have the ability to see the light at the end of the tunnel. You as a leader, must be able to see the light at the end
of the tunnel.
As a stakeholder in our learning community, we must all be committed to moving our school from Good to Great, we must be able to see seeds of opportunity for making our students successful.
There is always the seed of opportunity that is planted in the field of discouragement. The difference
between leaders and followers is that leaders see the opportunity and the hope and followers see the problem. Are you a problem solver? What a gift you are as a leader, when you can walk into the life of a
child and give them hope and show them the opportunity. This way of thinking will make our vision of “Inspiring Tomorrow’s Leaders” possible.
Have a great year! Sincerely,
Dr. LaShawn Frost, Principal

What is Social Emotional Learning?
Social Emotional Learning is the process of developing the self-awareness, self-control, and
interpersonal skills that are vital for school, work, and life success. Counselors work on these skills to
prepare students to be resilient. Here are 10 TIPS to practice self-acceptance and reduce stress:
➢ Embrace what makes you unique
➢ Let go of things you can’t change
➢ Identify your strengths
➢ Set goals
➢ Celebrate your accomplishments
➢ Plan ahead
➢ Think positively
➢ Be kind to yourself
➢ Get involved

Volleyball and Tennis Teams We are so excited about this year’s volleyball and tennis athletes. They work hard, exhibit exceptional
sportsmanship, and represent Booker Middle School with pride. Good luck on your 2019 season, ladies!
Auggie Toyton Broadcom MASTERS Top 300
Congratulations to 8th grade BMS student Auggie Toynton, who has
been named to this year’s Broadcom MASTERS Top 300. Founded and
produced by the Society for Science & the Public, #brcmMASTERS is
the premier STEM competition for middle school students. This is a
NATIONAL award. He was selected among thousands of STEM Fair
projects in the country. Congratulations, Auggie!
CFES School of Distinction! BMS has been named a College for Every Student (CFES) Brilliant Pathways School of Distinction based on its performance during the 2018-19
school year. CFES Brilliant Pathways introduces students to college and career possibilities, provides resources to educators and helps students and
their families plan a path to college and beyond. BMS continues to receive praise for the plan it has developed and executed for its CFES students,
which immerses the entire school in the CFES core tenets of “mentoring,” “essential skills” and “pathways to college and career.” According to CFES, 99 percent of its student participants graduate from high school, and 95
percent choose to attend college. A big congrats to head of the CFES
program Mrs. Shafer for all her hard work!
Hispanic Heritage Month Event!
ESOL students are ready to invite our Booker Middle School
community to celebrate our Hispanic Heritage Month next
month on Monday, October 21st. Keep an eye open for

Donuts with Dad On September 17th we welcomed our BMS dads onto
the Booker Middle campus for donuts and fun in the
media center. It was great getting to show our dads
some appreciation and everyone had a fantastic
time!
Bahamas Collection After the devastation from Hurricane Dorian those living in the
Bahamas need our help! Here is the first shipment we have
collected to send to aid in disaster relief. More is being collected
see page 9 for a flyer with more details.
Math Problem Solving Gallery Walk Algebra students in Mrs. Dwulit’s class work together to solve
challenging problems in a gallery walk. They started problems but
then circulated around the room looking for errors, adding on to
solutions all while solving equations. They also left reflective
feedback for each other suggesting ways to improve their work in
the future. After the activity, students shared that they loved this
learning strategy because they were moving all period long and
working together.
Musical Theatre class added! We are pleased to announce that we have been able to add an additional
section of our popular Musical Theatre VPA class this year! The new
class will feature our emerging musical theatre students as they apply the
new skills they are learning in acting, singing, and dancing. Come see
them strut their stuff at their performance this year of “The Stinky
Cheese Man and Other Fairly Stupid Tales” on Friday and Saturday,
February 21-22, at First Presbyterian Church, 2050 Oak Street, Sarasota,
FL (times TBD)
