Welcome to the 49th MG Car Club’s of Australia National Meeting. Let the fun begin.

The organising chairman, committee and team members have worked hard, the “Cradle Coast Group”, is probably the smallest to organise a National Meeting and it makes me proud that they and lots of our members from all over the state have volunteered to bring you a successful event.

I wonder how many of you attended the first National Meeting in Tasmania in 1976 or any of those that followed in 1984, 1992, 1998, 2006 and 2012, some wet, some dry - but I remember them all being fun. Friendships, old ones to renew and new ones to make, joint love of the marque, wind in the hair driving on our fabulous Tasmanian roads, it’ll be fun and it’s still the best thing to have!

On behalf of all members of the MGCC Tasmania it is our hope that you will take home the warm memories of friendship, excitement and fun that was Easter in Tasmania in 2018.

On behalf of all Tasmanian MG members and the organising committee, I would like to take this opportunity to welcome old and new friends to the 2018 MG National Meeting.

It doesn’t seem that long ago that it was decided to hold the 2018 National Meeting in Tasmania, time goes by very quickly.

By default, I became the chairperson of the organising committee, a small group of dedicated and hardworking MG enthusiasts. This will be the first time a national meeting has been held outside a major Tasmanian city, this alone has thrown out many challenges.

The 2018 meeting will cover all aspects of MG motoring, starting with our Noggin N Natter on the Friday evening where you can sample an array of local Tasmanian produce. This will be followed by a full weekend of competition and social events including a High Tea for those that don’t want to spend all day at the Concours. The weekend will wind up with a Gala Trophy Presentation Dinner on the Monday night, followed by a farewell breakfast on the Tuesday morning.

Please take the opportunity to try some of the great food and wine the region has to offer, enjoy the weekend and drive safely.

Don Fraser

WELCOME from Councillor Jan Bonde, Mayor of Central Coast On behalf of the Central Coast community, it is my great pleasure to welcome you to the MG Car Club 2018 National Meeting. We are delighted that you have chosen to hold your event in Ulverstone and hope that you enjoy the hospitality, friendliness and natural beauty our municipal area is renowned for. Tasmania’s Central Coast spans an area of 932 square kilometres and includes Ulverstone, Penguin and many small, rural settlements dotted

throughout the countryside. We have a population of approximately 22,000 residents and Ulverstone is the State’s largest town. Approximately 93,000 residents live within a 50km radius of Ulverstone, making us most centrally located within this beautiful Cradle Coast region. Our brand is “Coast to Canyon”, in recognition of our beautiful coastline and pristine beaches, the rugged Leven Canyon and everything in between. Our Dial Range is the backdrop to rich farmland, productive valleys and the meandering Leven River. Our economy is based on agriculture and we are home to large processors such as Simplot Australia (potatoes) and Botanical Resources Australia (pyrethrum), along with innovative small producers providing berries, wines and olive oil, to name just a few. I hope during your stay you have an opportunity to sample some of our wonderful local produce. Tasmania is also renowned for its scenic coastal and country roads, and our region provides some of the best. I am sure you will enjoy the challenge of driving the undulating, winding and sometimes narrow roads and we look forward to seeing you out and about. We are extremely proud that you have chosen Central Coast as the base for your 2018 National Meeting, and I wish you all a successful and most memorable event.

Welcome Message – Central Coast Council Mayor

Events like the MG National Meeting take a considerable amount of time, effort and money to organise and run. If you, the attendee, had to pay for everything that is required to hold this event, your registration fee would be substantially more and I suspect that many of you would have to think twice about whether you would still attend due to the price. We are therefore indebted to a special group of organisations that are our Event Partners, Sponsors and Friends. These businesses have either invested substantially in our weekend, provided advertising sponsorship or have provided in kind support of our organising committee or events. If you come across one of these businesses during your stay in Tasmania, please support them as they have supported us. Ulverstone Sports and Leisure Centre The USLC is the main location over the weekend. All social events will be held here and in the case of touring events will leave from here.

Any of the off ramps from the Bass Highway will bring you to the USLC.

Travelling from the East or using the Gawler Rd off ramps, you will need to cross the bridge and take either of the next 2 turns on your right.

Travelling from the West and taking the first off ramp into Ulverstone, take either of the 2 turns on your left after crossing the railway line. If you cross the bridge you have gone too far! Go around the roundabout and cross back over the bridge and take either of the next 2 turns on the right.

There should be ample parking available either in the USLC carparks or on Tasma Parade.

Anzac Park is located on the banks of the Leven River at the end of Kings Parade, adjacent to the bridge in the centre of town. It’s unmistakeable features are the Flying Saucer and Spaceship playground equipment.

Entry from the East and West is most convenient if you take the Gawler Rd off ramps and proceed down Lovett St and turn left at the intersection with Kings Parade as Lovett St continues to the right into town. You will see the Anzac Park gate arch directly in front of you as you turn.

If you come to a roundabout, you have gone too far, proceed around the roundabout and back track along Lovett St, then continue straight on into Kings Parade, Anzac Park is on your right.

Produced 1968 – 1971 Number built – 26,240 cars The MG 1300 was an updated, uprated version of the very successful MG 1100. Unlike the Morris/Austin derivative the MG 1300 was offered only in the 2 door body. The 1275cc motor produced a healthy 70bhp.

1988 – Maestro Turbo, 30 years Produced October 1988 - limited run of 505 cars The Maestro Turbo was Rovers reaction to the hot hatch era. The Maestro Turbo was the standard Maestro beefed up with off the shelf turbo, drivetrain and suspension along

Upon arrival at the motorkhana site, cars must proceed to the parking area and remove any loose items from the car.

The car will then be safety checked before you are called to the drivers briefing.

Unregistered cars arriving on trailers must be safety checked on the trailer and then unloaded in the pink area on the map, tow cars and trailers must then be parked back in the parking area. It is important that drivers follow these instructions as we are operating in a public area and we do not have a road permit to allow unregistered cars on the public road.

Unregistered cars will then be allowed to load back up in the pink area before departing the motorkhana test site.

Once you have completed your 2 runs, you will be directed to park and wait for all tests to finish, then there will be a controlled movement of cars between tests, as cars have to drive through one of the tests for access.

The Kimber run will be a relaxed non-competitive social drive that takes you through our Cradle Country Region, along country roads giving you spectacular views of our mountains, country plains and the unusual highland vegetation, eventually arriving at the Cradle Mountain Hotel situated just outside of the Cradle Mountain National Park for a light lunch, which is part of your registration.

Lunch will be served in the main dining room from 12.30 – 2.00 pm.

The run is approx. 101kms/63 mls and will take approx. 3 and half hours. This is allowing a 1 hour morning tea break, toilet stops and sightseeing stops along the route.

Cars will start arriving at the Ulverstone Sports & Leisure Centre car park, Tasma Parade West Ulverstone from 8.15 – 8.45 am for drivers check in. Each driver will be given a bag presentation which will include instructions and route details for the Kimber Run and some tourist brochures of the areas passing through. John Wratten Memorial Trophy Presented as a perpetual award at the first National Meeting in Sydney in 1970, by the Sydney MG Dealer. At the second National Meeting in Melbourne in 1971, John Wratten was tragically killed in an accident at Calder in a P-Type. John was secretary of the

Victorian Centre and one of the organisers of the National Meeting. It was unanimously agreed at the Delegates Meeting after the event that in future this MG trophy would become the John Wratten Memorial Trophy. It is presented to the Club obtaining the most points over all the four competitive events, adjusted by the “Fudge Factor”. Points will be allocated for this trophy as detailed below, regardless of class size. In the case of tied places, both competitors will receive the points applicable to that placing.

Nuffield Oceania Trophy Early in the 1950’s Lord Nuffield commissioned and presented four prestigious trophies to the MG Car Club UK so that they would recognise the achievements of the overseas centres in four separate regions. These regions were; 1. Europe 2. South Africa 3. United States 4. Oceania

The Nuffield Oceania Trophy was awarded to various Australian and New Zealand centres until 1960. In 1961 the Home Centre decided to review the award criteria but during the review period a key person left the team and the project was forgotten and the cup was placed into secure storage in Melbourne. In 1995 the combined Australian MG clubs agreed to a set of locally written rules which were then approved by Mike Hawke Chairman, and Alan Kingwell, Overseas Director of the M.G. Car Club Home Centre, while attending “MG’s Down Under” in Fremantle and the trophy was given to the Australian M.G. Car Clubs for their use.

This award is based on the Concours and Motorkhana only and each Club is represented by 2% of their nominated MG ownership numbers. A minimum of 5 and maximum of 20 shall be used for averaging. The total points scored by the Club’s 2% shall be calculated then averaged. The resultant average shall be the measure of the Club’s performance. The winner is the Club with the highest average score.

Jean Kimber-Cook Perpetual Trophy for Junior Drivers Jean Kimber-Cook was in Fremantle in 1995 and presented Harry Pyle with a scale model of an M.G. TC which was mounted on a trophy to recognise the most successful Junior competing at the National Meeting. The trophy is awarded for the best score by a Junior in the Motorkhana Event. Entrants must be under 17 at 1 January 2009 and nominate their participation at time of registration.

Joan Richmond Trophy Initiated and donated by the M.G. Car Club of Victoria in 1989, this trophy is awarded to the female entrant who achieves the highest aggregate score over all competition events during the National Meeting. The trophy is named in recognition of Joan Richmond, an Australian sportswoman who achieved International recognition in motorsport and was part of the 1935 M.G. woman’s team at Le Mans.

Chris Dodds Memorial Trophy Inaugurated by a gathering of the V8 Register members at the 1982 National Meeting in Canberra the trophy was donated in recognition of Chris Dodds’ contribution to the MG marque and in particular the V8 Register. Chris passed way in December 1981 at age 28 and an annual trophy in his honour is competed for both in the UK and Australia. The Chris Dodds Trophy is awarded to the entrant with an MGB GT V8 Class scoring the highest aggregate points over the National Meeting weekend.

New Zealand Plate The New Zealand Plate was first presented at the 1977 National Meeting held in Katoomba. It was brought to Australia by a group of enthusiasts from New Zealand led by Bill and Gaye Baxter. It is awarded to the entrant with a T-Type with the best aggregate points score – Classes D,E,F and T-Types in Class X and Z.

Golden Gudgeon Trophy Instigated at the 1978 National Meeting in Perth by the Australian T Series Association, the trophy is presented to the entrant with a T-Type achieving the best aggregate score - Classes D,E,F and T-Types in Class X. Note that Class Z Super Specials are not included for this trophy.

Cecil Kimber Centennial Trophy Cecil Kimber’s daughter, Jean Kimber Cook, brought this trophy to Australia in 1988 from the M.G. Car Club in the UK. It is awarded to the individual competitor attaining the highest points in all events. All events judged equally.

National Magazine Competition Trophy Donated by Gosford Shoplifters in 1982. The trophy is awarded to the Club judged to have the best magazine. Factors taken into consideration are presentation, content, cost and quantity printed.

National Website Competition The Perpetual Award is donated by the Geelong MG Car Club. Judged by an independent IT Consultant Photographic Competition Entries for this competition are displayed throughout the National Meeting weekend. Photographs are the entrant’s own work, and taken within the last two (2) years - all feature an MG theme or cars and have not been displayed at a previous National Meeting. Categories judged are:

1. Best Action photograph. 2. Best Still photograph. 3. Best Novelty photograph. 4. Best Creative digitally enhanced photograph.

A trophy for first place in each category only, will be awarded. All entries must be supplied as prints, maximum size of photograph is restricted to A4. Hard Luck Trophy Although not a perpetual trophy, it is a custom at MG National Meetings to present a small token award to a National Meeting participant who has had the misfortune to suffer a mishap on the way to the National Meeting. There have been many extraordinary tales over the years and often it is a difficult task for the host centre to decide who is the most deserving of the Hard Luck Trophy.

Fudge Factor The Fudge Factor takes into account the distance travelled by members of a Club to the National Meeting and the number of MG owning members as at 31st of December of the preceding year. MG owning membership is defined as up to three members of a family (over the age of 18 years) being attributed to one MG car. It is used in calculating the inter-centre points for the following trophies only;

· John Wratten Memorial Trophy. · TC Owners Club Perpetual Pre-War Plate. · Golden Gudgeon Trophy.

The members of the MG Car Club of Tasmania extend a very warm thankyou to all MG’ers for choosing to visit us here on the Cradle Coast for the 2018 MG National Meeting.

We all understand the expense to travel across Bass Strait, and the commitment that has been made to come to our state for an event such as this. Many of you are staying in Tassie to tour our island or visit friends, and many are also heading back to work and commitments. If your visit is cut short, we hope that you might have the opportunity to come back and have an extended visit sometime.

As you leave we hope that you have had an enjoyable and memorable 4 days participating in the events we have organised. Our little committee has worked tirelessly to put this National Meeting on and all our efforts were for your benefit.

We also hope you take back with you some samples of our wines, seafood or produce that we are very proud of.

Safe travelling and we hope to catch up in Queensland next year for the 2019 MG National Meeting

Chairman: Don Fraser Secretary: Andrew Midgley Treasurer: Mark Dilger Registration: Tony Lansdell Social Director: Colleen Jeffrey Competition Director: Robin Wilmot Regalia: Rosemary Ryan Event Co-Ordinators: Greg Bannon Ruth Jessup Susan Fraser Sue-Anne Midgley John Biggelaar Terry Jeffrey The 2018 MG National Meeting organising committee wish to thank and acknowledge all the volunteers who have assisted us over the weekend to run the many events that you as attendees have enjoyed. Without them we would not have been able to do it for the money.

MG CAR CLUB of QUEENSLAND Inc.

GPO Box 1847

BRISBANE Qld. 4001

Invites all affiliated MG Car Clubs in Australia to come to the 50th

MG National Meeting at REDLANDS Qld.

17 to 23rd

April 2019

Come help us celebrate the 50th MG National Meeting at Redlands Queensland.

Make it a time to look back and be proud of this marvellous event’s history.

Make this 50th MG National Meeting, the Golden Jubilee National Meeting, be the

one where you come and renew old friendships, make new ones and remember all the good times.

Set on the shores of Moreton Bay, with the events focused around the small town of Cleveland in the Redland City Council area, you can be assured of a warm welcome. Adjacent to this are the Brisbane bay-side suburbs of Manly and Wynnum.

Redlands is the gateway to a unique and historical number of islands, one of which is North Stradbroke with its surf beaches, rocky headlands and sand dunes. Plan a holiday in this area as it has much to offer. You can be as layback or energetic as you like on your holiday. The area is within easy reach also of the Theme Parks like Wet-n-Wild, Movie World, Dream World and the Outback Spectacular, so bring the family

These meetings have evolved over the years from a Natter & Noggin, Concours, Hillclimb, dirt circuit Sprint, and Dinner to what they are today. We will include all the traditional events and functions at our 50

th National Meeting.

To help celebrate 50 years of these fabulous meetings we envisage a display, of photographs on a time line of people with their cars who have attended the National Meetings over the decades. We suggest you start looking for suitable photos now. We are sure it will bring back many marvellous memories.

A fabulous fiftieth, fun filled, MG long week-end awaits you at Redlands in 2019
