Called to Worship, Empowered to Serve
Thank you and Farewell to John
Sunday, January 7, 2018, will be Reverend John Muse’s last service with us. He’ll
conclude his tenure as our transitional minister on January 9, 2018.
It is hard to believe that John has only been with us for six months! During his tenure,
he has worked diligently to develop relationships, provide pastoral care, give
valuable guidance to our Pastoral Nominating Committee, and serve as an effective
and approachable head of staff. His leadership has helped to prepare the way for a
smooth transition for our new pastor, Charlie Lee, who will join us in February.
The transition team is exceedingly grateful to John for his dedicated leadership,
service, energy and enthusiasm. He will be missed.
In the coming weeks, please take the time to thank John (in person, or drop him a
quick note or email) for his dedicated service to our church. Please also keep John
and his family in your prayers as he seeks another opportunity to serve in transitional
ministry.
Gratefully,
The Transition Team:
Kevin Kattmann
Susan Porter
Rhonda Overman
Lauren Shook
Anna Lewis
Slade Lewis - Chair
On Sunday, December 10th, the
congregation voted unanimously to call
Rev. Dr. Charlie Lee as Starmount’s next
pastor and head of staff. Charlie will begin
his ministry at Starmount on February 19, 2018.
Watch for more information to come in the
next Star Press.

A new year is known for
starting fresh – for new
chapters. Resolutions of
better eating, more
exercise, and spending
less are some of the
most popular. New
chapters begin here at
Starmount – this month, we celebrate the
ministry that Rev. John Muse had with us
over the last seven months. Next month, we
welcome Rev. Dr. Charlie Lee, his wife
Lindsay, and their children Jackson and
Eliza into our Starmount family. So many
changes that seem to come at once…but,
as I have witnessed over the last 2+ years,
we are a resilient congregation, rooted in
God’s love for us and our love for one
another.
As we say goodbye to John and make
preparations for Charlie, I encourage you to
take a moment to say “thank you” to the
members of the Transition Team, Session,
and staff – all have kept the ship on a
steady course as the Pastoral Nominating
Committee did their work on behalf of the
congregation. It has been a long, winding
road – but a road full of wonderful
memories as we worked to understand
who we are as a body of Christ. And what
a wonderful gift that is!
What new chapters are you looking
forward to in this New Year? I look forward
to hearing how God is working in your lives
through these new chapters.
Blessings and love,
Pastor Kathryn

Faith Formation
Change Coming to Adult Sunday
School for Lent The Faith Formation
Committee has agreed to
“shake up” Adult Sunday
School during Lent. Starting
February 14, Adult Sunday
School will be held in small
groups in homes of
members of the church
family at times that are agreed upon by the
whole group. The small groups, comprised of
6-8 people, will covenant with one another
to meet weekly during the weeks of Advent
to learn how they can integrate the Christian
Practices of Evangelism that Pastor Kathryn
identified and defined in her Doctor of
Ministry project. The Committee will be hard
at work in January identifying small group
leaders and participants; if you would like to
be a leader (or participate), please talk to
Pastor Kathryn.

UKirk and Starmount attend the
Montreat College Conference January 2-5 each year is an exciting time that
college students always look forward to. Why
those specific dates? Because it’s the same
dates, each year, of the Montreat College
Conference! This year, ten members of UKirk
Greensboro, including two Starmount college
students, will join over 1,000 other college
students from across the country at the
annual College Conference.
This year’s conference theme is “Home”.
“Home” has many meanings to people of
faith. As young people go to college, study
abroad, begin jobs, engage in mission work,
and leave their hometowns and families of
origin, “Home” begins to have new meanings.
What makes a place home? What does it
mean to leave home? What does it mean to
feel like you don’t have a home? As
participants wrestle with these questions, they
look to the past and to Holy Scriptures; as
people of faith, with an eye towards a just
future and commissioned by God to engage in
Kingdom-building, they will reflect on those
who do not have a home and cry out for
justice and mercy.
Please pray for them during this conference
and make sure to ask questions about it when
you see them!

Women’s Retreat February 16-18, 2018
Where: Montreat
How: Watch for sign-up coming soon!
(from 2017 Women’s Retreat)
In November of 2017, we celebrated the
65th anniversary of Starmount Presbyterian
Church which was formed in 1952. This
year we'll take a peek at what went on
during Starmount's first year.
The first regular worship service under the
name Starmount Presbyterian Church was
Jan. 4th, 1953. Worship services were held
at 3:00 p.m. at First Moravian Church until
the Starmount Church building was
completed. Count from that first service
was 107 adults and 45 children.
The first fellowship dinner was held on
Tues, Jan. 13th, at 6:30 p.m. in the
basement of First Presbyterian Church at a
cost of 60 cents a plate. There were two
volunteer committees in charge, one of
ladies to prepare and serve the meal and
a men's committee to clean up. The next
week's bulletin indicated that
approximately 150 people enjoyed the
meal.
At Salem Presbytery's meeting, the same
day as the fellowship dinner, L.B.
McBrayer, a member of the board of
elders, asked that Starmount Church,
Greensboro, be put on the budget for
$6,000.

Finance Committee
Love of Numbers or Love of
Starmount?
During a recent particularly challenging
meeting, a member of the Finance
Committee remarked “Isn’t it just wonderful
that all of us love numbers?” The Committee
members stopped to laugh, but slogged on
through the rest of the numbers on the
financial statements that Libby Wilson,
Director of Finance and Administration,
prepares so diligently and accurately
every month, often in different iterations for
different users and different purposes.
The arcane nature of the Finance
Committee’s tasks, and the members’
geeky love of numbers, belies the fact that
the Committee members love Starmount
first and foremost, and are driven in their
dedication to see Starmount’s history
preserved and its legacy as a mission-driven
church protected, mindful of its place in the
community and in the lives of its members.
The Committee does this by monitoring the
financial dynamics of the church...what it
receives as income from congregational
pledges, gifts and earnings on investments,
and what it disburses to cover operating
expenses including salaries, the
commitments of the Mission Committee, and
the costs to administer other church
programs such as Fellowship, Worship and
Music, Youth, among others.
The majority of the eight current members of
the Committee are long-time members of
Starmount. They raised their children at
Starmount; they have served as Elders and
on various committees within the church.
They are financial professionals:
CPAs, practicing accountants, corporate
comptrollers or treasurers, bankers, business
consultants. They each bring dozens upon
dozens of years of experience to the table,
as well as a diversity of insights and opinions
on “best practices” that often factor into
each deliberation of the Committee. There
is generally consensus on the most technical
aspect of each decision, but until all
members are heard, there is rarely
consensus on how best to meet a particular
challenge or need. And then and only then
when the matter at hand is debated and
debated, is a decision reached, usually as a
consensus, but always with the deepest
respect for the opinions of all the members.
These past two calendar years have been
financially challenging, despite the awe-
inspiring bequest of Lillian Steele which has
been deployed to great and beneficial
effect for so many! There have been some
times when the rigors of financial discipline
have required that Finance recommend
some draconian measures to ensure that
Starmount’s history is preserved and its
legacy is protected for the good that surely
lies beyond a short-term vision and
timeline. That vision now includes a new
pastor. That timeline is now the new
year. And Starmount remains on strong
financial footing still with no debt and
significant liquidity, and still with a Finance
Committee populated with members that
continue to love numbers, even as they wish
them to be larger!

New Year’s
Resolutions? It’s the time of year when
we look back at 2017
and resolve to improve
our lives in small or large
ways in 2018. What are
your new year’s resolutions?
The most common new year’s resolutions are (1)
exercise more 38%, (2) lose weight 33%, (3) eat
more healthily 32%, (4) take a more active
approach to health 15%, (5) learn a new skill or
hobby 15%, (6) spend more time on personal
wellbeing 12%, and (7) spend more time with
family and friends 12%.
Join your friends at a yoga class at Starmount
and satisfy almost all of the most common
resolutions. Yoga won’t directly help you eat
more healthily, but it can help with all of the
other ones!
With six classes a week you are sure to find one
that matches your needs. Our two chair classes
on Tuesday and Friday at 11:30 are suitable for
folks who are not sure their bodies are up to the
challenge of yoga. Out of the Chair on Thursday
at 11:30 welcomes folks who can get up and
down from the floor, but who hesitate to step
into a “regular” yoga class. Friday at 9:30 am,
Sunday at 5:30 pm, and Wednesday at 7:30 pm
you will find classes that incorporate classic
yoga poses with restorative yoga, some Pilates,
and whatever will make your body feel
challenged and stretched on that day.
Look for the yoga flyers at the visitor and
reception desks to see the schedule of classes. If
you have questions, please contact Jennifer
Dowler at [email protected] or catch
Jennifer at church. Or you can just show up at a
class. Namaste!
Important change— The usual noon
meeting on Jan. 17th will be at 10:30 due
to a conflict with The Story Bible study
meeting at noon.
The Lake House, A Novel by Kate Morton
(512 p.) “Living on her family’s idyllic
lakeside estate in Cornwall, England,
Alice Edevane is a bright, inquisitive, and
precociously talented sixteen-year-old
who loves to write stories. One midsummer’s
eve, after a beautiful party drawing
hundreds of guests to the estate has
ended, the Edevanes discover that their
youngest child, eleven-month-old Theo,
has vanished without a trace. He is never
found, and the family is torn apart, the
house abandoned. Decades later, Alice
is living in London, having enjoyed a long
successful career as a novelist. Miles
away, Sadie Sparrow, a young detective
in the London police force, is staying at
her grandfather’s house in Cornwall.
While out walking one day, she stumbles
upon the old Edevane estate—now
crumbling and covered with vines. Her
curiosity is sparked, setting off a series of
events that will bring her and Alice
together and reveal shocking truths
about a past long gone...yet more
present than ever. A lush, atmospheric
tale of intertwined destinies from a
masterful storyteller, The Lake House is an
enthralling, thoroughly satisfying read.”

Enough, Discovering Joy
Through Simplicity and
Generosity by Adam Hamilton.
“We are living in uncertain time
economically. Uncertain times
can cause us to reflect upon
our focus and priorities and this
is what the book is all about. Hamilton is too
grounded to simplify this into saying ‘just
give ten percent to the church and
everything will be okay.’ This is about
changing our relationship with money by
focusing on our relationship with God. This is
about making changes in the way we live
that better reflect who we are. The text is full
of scripture references and there is
something different about how Hamilton
references the Bible. These are not just
‘proof texts’ that mention money. They are
texts that point out our need to refocus on
God, our need to see that our brokenness
and emptiness will never be cured by
buying, owning and possessing. We are led
to find our peace and contentment in God
and be free to live life in simplicity and to
share generously. The book is spiritual based,
but when you get right down to it, it is
practical. Whether you are living with the
fear of economic uncertainty and need
some wisdom or even if you seem to have
that all together and just need guidance
about how you might help someone you
love, give this book a read.” Review from

A New Earth, Awakening to Your
Life’s Purpose by Eckhart Tolle.
“This is a fantastic book for the
spiritual seeker. It helped me a lot
during a highly volatile time in my
life, where I was going through a
job loss and a divorce. Some
people find Eckhart Tolle a bit dry, or a bit
obtuse, but for me, he was spot on...and
spoke to me in the language I find most
useful. In short, as with all spiritual guru type
advice, there is no ‘one size fits all’, no
‘single language’, and definitely no ‘the
only way’ (or Tao). His words helped me see
past the challenges of the moment, and
provided for me a language, and a context
for how to work through the challenges of
my reality at that time. Now, nearly 10 years
later, his words and insights are part of my
thought paradigm, and I no longer 'think' of
his words, they are just part of how I
perceive the now, or 'reality'. I highly
recommend this book.” Amazon.com

Throw Out Fifty Things, Clear
Cutter, Find Life by Gail Blanke.
‘”Our lives are so filled with junk
from the past-from dried up tubes
of crazy glue to old grudges-that
it's a wonder we can get up in the
morning, never mind to work, care for our
children, our parents and just put one foot in
front of the other."’ Blanke wants to start a
movement of people across America
throwing out fifty things (magazines count as
only one!) that will help liberate us from the
stuff-both physical and mental-that clutters
our lives. It is the physical stuff that keeps us
from being happy and calm in our house -
not to mention keeps us from finding our
keys in the morning! And it is the clutter in
our mind that drags us down and holds us
back from living the life we want to live.
Blanke will take the reader through each
room in the house and help her figure out
what to throw out that will help them move
forward. She'll show us how to find and
throw out ‘toxic’ possessions that remind us
of failed relationships, bad jobs, etc, and
she'll help us figure out what to keep to help
us find out who we really are.” From
