When should a Catholic Be Anointed?

Receiving the Sacrament of the Sick helps in healing and provides strength. A careful judgment about the serious nature of the illness is sufficient. The Sacrament may be repeated if the sick person recovers after the anointing but becomes ill once again, or if, during the same illness, the person’s condition becomes more seri-ous. Twenty-first Sunday in ordinary time ~ August 25, 2019

Dear Parishioners of St. Thomas Aquinas:

You know that the Church can’t get involved in “politics” without jeopardizing its tax-exempt status, which means we Church folk often tend to swallow the truth to our own shame. I have trend-ed liberal (read Democrat) since the days of Tricky Dick, so you can proba-bly imagine how many times I’ve had to bite my tongue over the past forty years! Today I’m going to push the envelope a little bit.

You may remember the conservative commentator, Charlie Sykes. (He used to host a talk show on WTMJ radio in Milwaukee.) He’s written a number of books, dabbled in politics, and has been consistently “red” in matters falling along the great “blue/red” divide.

So, imagine my surprise when thumbing through the current issue of the Jesuit magazine, America, I came across an article by none other than “Charles Sykes”! Could it really be good ol’ Charlie? The author’s by-line said he was “founder and editor at large of The Bulwark and a longtime conservative commentator.” I’ve never heard of The Bulwark, but “longtime conservative commentator” sure rang true.

Well, whether it was the Charlie Sykes or not, the article’s title was enticing enough to draw me in: “Dante, the president and the moral cowardice of the G.O.P.” It was great! [One thing I will concede to the Republicans: by-and-large, they’re a whole lot more well-read than the Dems!] Sykes masterfully invokes lines 34-57 of Inferno, Canto III from The Divine Comedy in making his point about the muted G.O.P. response to the “Send her back! Send her back!” chant which arose from the crowd at a Greenville, NC, Trump rally in response to the president’s racist [Syke’s word, not mine] attack on Minnesota’s Democratic fresh-man Congresswoman, Ilhan Omar.

If you’d like to read the article, you can find in on-line by simply “googling” its title. (If you do so, as a bonus, you will discover that “Charlie” and “Charles” are one in the same!)

Little Rock Scripture Study Isaiah All are welcome to join us for this year’s Little Rock Scripture Study on the Book of Isaiah. Beginners as well as those who have studied the Bible will gain a greater understanding of God’s Word. The book of Isaiah is quoted in the New Testament more often than any other Old Testament writing other than the Psalms. Little Rock Scripture study is a Catholic Bible study. We will meet for 13 sessions about every other week from Sept. to April at St. Dominic. Sunday evening group begins at 7:00 PM on Sept. 22nd in the Francis room (living room in the St. Dominic Parish office). Wednesday morning group begins at 9:00 AM on Sept. 18th in the Volz Lounge (meeting room in the back of St Dominic Church). Books with Catholic commentary and study guide will be available at the first session. You can also get them from St. Dominic Parish Office. Contact Edie Morrison at [email protected] or 920-458-5390 for more information.

Walking with Purpose ~ Women’s Catholic Bible Study

Do you desire to grow in your Catholic faith? Do you seek connection with other women in our parish communities? Are you searching for something more in your life? We invite you to consider joining us in a study called Opening Your Heart this fall at Saint John the Baptist Catholic Church. Opening Your Heart is a beginner level study meant to examine the core questions that we wrestle with if we want to experience all that God has for us, and helps us to learn how the Scriptures apply to our everyday lives. Weekly group sessions are starting the week of October 14, 2019. Questions? Please contact Gloria Miller (920-254-6292) or Nikki Schneider (920-378-6454). If interested in having a Walking With Purpose women’s bible study at STA, please reach out to Nikki or Gloria to see what that would all entail. To register, go to www.stthomasaquinasel.org.

Grant our pastor many days,

Bless him, Lord, in many ways.

May his work be ever fruitful,

For which we, Lord,

are most grateful.
