July 5th—Fourteenth Sunday In Ordinary Time

CATHOLIC STEWARDSHIP BASED ON TODAY’S SCRIPTURES

St. Paul declares in his letter to the Corinthians, the Second Reading, “For when I am weak,

then I am strong.” Certainly anyone who knows much about St. Paul would not view him as a weak

man. This is a man who, through his strong faith, put his life in jeopardy constantly. He endured im-

prisonment and shipwrecks. Yet, he admits to having weaknesses.

There is something humiliating in admitting one’s weaknesses. Humility is an important trait in

living a life of stewardship. Being able to recognize and admit our shortcomings is essential for us to

have the strength Paul demonstrates. That is his point in today’s reading, and it contains an important

message for each of us.

The reason St. Paul finds strength in his limitations is because he is aware that the Lord will

provide the power needed in the midst of those deficiencies. Paul’s life is God-centered. Living life

that way is exactly the way one can best follow stewardship as a way of life. Paul prefaces his state-

ment about being weak and strong by writing the message he has been given by the Lord, who said to

him: “My grace is sufficient for you, for power is made perfect in weakness.” May we pray for the

strength of God’s presence, and may we be willing to seek humility to truly find our strengths.

PRAYER FOR INDEPENDENCE DAY WEEKEND Gracious and loving God, let your Spirit be with us this Independence Day weekend. Hear our prayers, and

increase in us the will to follow your Son Jesus. Help us to draw on the resources of our faith as we use the opportuni-

ties of our democracy to shape a society more respectful of the life, dignity, and rights of the human person, especially

the poor and vulnerable. We ask this through Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the

Holy Spirit, one God forever and ever. Amen.

SUMMER MISSION APPEAL - July 18th/19th (second collection) Mission Appeal from COAR, a School and Orphanage in El Salvador COAR, which stands for the Community Oscar Arnulfo Romero, will be making an upcoming mission appeal and asking for your donations, prayers, and interest. COAR is located in Zaragoza, El Salvador. It was founded in 1980 by a Cleveland Diocese Mis-sion Team priest Fr. Ken Myers during El Salvador’s brutal civil war. Fr. Ken and fellow Cleve-land Mission Team members Sr. Dorothy Kazel, OSU, and Jean Donovan (murdered December 2, 1980) began gathering orphans from refugee camps and bringing them back to the Mis-sion’s parish of Zaragoza.

COAR is now known as the “Children’s Village” in El Salvador with 800 day students, 100 in foster care, a medical and dental clinic, pharmacy, trade shops (such as baking and tailoring). It is administered directly by the Archbishop of San Salvador through his Vicariate of Human Development. COAR’s motto is Women and Men for God and Culture: the curriculum educates the entire person. With over 100 employees COAR strengthens the regional economy. One of the first orphans of COAR served as mayor of Zaragoza from 1998 - 2002. COAR buzzes with optimism and vitality.

However, El Salvador remains an impoverished country as are COAR’s students. To protect the most vulnerable simply requires food, shelter, and housemothers. To educate the children to modernize their economy requires updated computers and new classrooms. To get the best teachers and treat them fairly requires wages near the Salvadoran national average. Please help us respond to the needs of the most impoverished among us and help them build a bet-ter future.

¡Esperamos verlos pronto!
