BAPTISMS Dates and times are announced at the baptismal class. Parents of children to be baptized must attend two classes of prepara-tion. Godparents need only attend the first class. Godparents must be practicing Catholics who have received Confirmation. The classes take place on the 3rd and 4th Wednesday of each month at 7:30 pm in English in the Old Church. If you do not live in this parish, you must obtain a letter of permission from your own parish to baptize your child at St. Peter Chanel. New Church Year - New Missal

Advent is the beginning of the new Church year, the season lasting up to four weeks in which Catholics prepare to celebrate Christmas. Advent 2011 in the U.S. also signals the beginning of the use of the new Roman Missal in English or, more precisely, the Third Edition of the Roman Missal (the first two editions were published in the U.S. in 1974 and 1985). The Missal is the book that the priest uses for celebrating the Mass, and also includes the responses of the people. It has previously been called the “Sacramentary.” The Spanish-language Misal Romano, Tercera Edición is still in process and should come out within the next couple of years. Based on the new Missal already approved for Colombia, Ecuador and Mexico, the U.S. edition of the Misal Romano will include proper texts and adaptations for the United States, and a set of Mass formularies of the patronal feasts of Spanish-speaking countries for inclusion as an appendix. In Latin America and the U.S., the second person plural vosotros will be replaced by ustedes throughout the Missal, including in the words of consecration. At English Masses, from today on, the new Roman Missal is in use. You are hearing new words in the prayers the priest pronounces and, with the aid of the pew cards, you are beginning to learn the new responses of the faithful. From the initial greeting of the priest and your response: “And with your spirit,” there are many changes of words and phrases - enough to make it necessary to refer to the pew card and read from it carefully throughout the Mass. In addition, to appreciate the new words in the Eucharistic Prayers, it will be helpful to follow along in the missalette. When the new form of the Mass (Novus Ordo) was promulgated in April of 1969, it began to be translated from Latin into the language of each country. Most Missals translated the Latin closely, as literally as possible (this is especially true for the Romance languages, such as Spanish); in English the translation was freer - not as literal. The choice was made to try to render the sense of the Latin words while adhering to the flow of spoken English. With the Third Edition of the Roman Missal published in Latin in 2002, guidelines were also given to prefer more literal translations into the vernacular. This has led to a noticeably different English Missal than we previously had (whereas the differences in the new Spanish Missal, for example, will be much lighter). The English now translates the Latin more closely, preferring Latin-based words, such as “adore” and “invisible” over words of Anglo-Saxon origin, such as “worship” and “unseen.” The literal translation gives us more spiritual and elevated words, such as “communion” rather than “fellowship” (a fellowship could also be secular). Classic theological terms, such as “consubstantial” replace more common expressions, such as “one in being.” This Advent, the Third Edition of the Roman Missal in English is a gift to unwrap from one Sunday to the next, appreciating its richer and more poetic language, so that we may lift up our hearts, with the spirit of the priest, “as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ.”

ADVENT From the Latin ad-venio, to come. Advent is a period beginning with the Sunday nearest to the feast of St. Andrew the Apostle (30 November) and embracing four Sundays. With Advent the ecclesiastical year be-gins. During this time the faithful are admonished to: Prepare themselves worthily to celebrate the anni-

versary of the Lord's coming into the world as the incarnate God of love,

Make their souls fitting abodes for the Redeemer coming in Holy Communion and through grace, and

Make themselves ready for His final coming as judge, at death and at the end of the world.

Advent Advent begins today. Good to keep in mind that the Advent Season is not the Christmas Season. Advent is the time to spiritually prepare ourselves for Christmas by spending more time in prayer, practicing greater self-denial, and being more self-giving. It is hoped that everyone would take advantage of this penitential season in order to make a good confession and so better prepare himself to celebrate Christmas with a pure heart. The more efforts we make to prepare ourselves spiritually, the more we will be able to participate in the true joy of Christmas.

Some suggestions regarding prayer: come to Mass daily if at all possible, pray the Rosary daily, set up an advent wreath at home and pray around it as a family, read the infancy narratives from the Gospels of St. Matthew and St. Luke as a family

Some suggestions regarding self-denial: give up sweets, don’t watch television or movies for entertainment, give up video games or music, do a little fasting, limit your spending on gifts

Some suggestions regarding self-giving: give to the poor program, visit or write someone who is lonely, assist with the preparation of the food and gifts for the needy, children can do extra chores around the house.

Nuevo Año eclesiástico – Nuevo Misal El Adviento es el comienzo del nuevo año eclesiástico, la temporada dura hasta cuatro semanas en las que los católicos se preparan para celebrar la Navidad. Adviento 2011 en los Estados Unidos también marca el comienzo del uso del Misal Romano nuevo en Inglés o, más precisamente, la Tercera Edición del Misal Romano (las dos primeras ediciones fueron publicadas en los Estados Unidos en 1974 y 1985). El Misal es el libro que el sacerdote utiliza para la celebración de la Misa, y también incluye las respuestas de la gente. Se le ha llamado el “Sacramentario”. El Misal Romano del idioma español, Tercera Edición se encuentra todavía en proceso y saldrá en el próximo par de años. Basado en el nuevo Misal ya aprobado para Colombia, Ecuador y México, la edición del Misal Romano de los Estados Unidos incluirá textos apropiados y adaptaciones para los Estados Unidos y un conjunto de formularios de la Misa de las fiestas patronales de los países de habla español para su inclusión como un apéndice. When one of these persons receives information leading to a “reasonable suspicion” that a child is being abused or neglected, he or she must make a report to the appropriate child protection or law enforcement agency. El Adviento El Adviento comienza el día de hoy. Es bueno tener presente que la Temporada de Adviento no es la Temporada de Navidad. El Adviento es la época para prepararnos espiritualmente para la Navidad; dedicando más tiempo a la oración, practicando mayores sacrificios y dando más de sí mismo. Es de esperar que todos se aprovechen de esta temporada penitencial a fin de hacer una buena confesión y de esa manera prepararse mejor para celebrar la Navidad con un corazón más puro. Cuanto más esfuerzos hagamos para prepararnos espiritualmente, más podremos tomar parte en la alegría verdadera de la Navidad. Algunas sugerencias con respecto a la oración: si es

posible, ir a Misa diariamente, rezar el Rosario todos los días, colocar una corona de adviento en la casa y rezar en familia a su alrededor, leer en familia los pasajes de la infancia en los Evangelios de San Mateo y de San Lucas.

Algunas sugerencias con respecto al sacrificio: no comer dulces, golosinas o caramelos, no ver la televisión ni películas para entretenerse, dejar los juegos de video o la música, ayunar un poco, limitar los gastos de dinero en regalos.

Algunas sugerencias con respecto a dar de sí mismo: dar para el programa de los pobres, visitar o escribir a alguien que se siente solo, ayudar con la preparación de los alimentos y los regalos para los necesitados, los niños pueden hacer algunas tareas adicionales alrededor de la casa.

THANKSGIVING and ST. FAUSTINA In an entry from her Diary from Nov. 5, 1934, St. Faustina writes about being thankful to God. In an astounding passage, she writes: True love is measured by the thermometer of suffer-ing. Jesus, I thank You for the little daily crosses, for opposition to my endeavors, for the hardships of com-munal life, for the misinterpretation of my intentions, for humiliations at the hands of others, for the harsh way in which we are treated, for false suspicions, for poor health and loss of strength, for self-denial, for dying to myself, for lack of recognition in everything, for the upsetting of all my plans. Thank You, Jesus, for interior suffering, for dryness of spirit, for terrors, fears and incertitudes, for the dark-ness and the deep interior night, for temptations and various ordeals, for torments too difficult to describe, especially for those which no one will understand, for the hour of death with its fierce struggle and all its bitterness. I thank You, Jesus, You who first drank the cup of bit-terness before You gave it to me, in a much milder form. I put my lips to this cup of Your holy will. Let all be done according to Your good pleasure; let that which Your wisdom ordained before the ages be done to me. I want to drink the cup to its last drop, and not seek to know the reason why. RECEIVING THE PRECIOUS BLOOD We would like to remind you that if you have the cold, the flu, or any other communicable illness, we would appreciate if you would AB-STAIN from receiving the precious blood during communion to minimize the risk of contagion. Also, if you are holding a baby in your arms, we would appreciate if you do NOT receive from the precious blood, since we want communicants to be able to hold the chalice with TWO hands securely. Also a quick reminder that when-ever you approach to receive Holy Communion under any species you must do an act of reverence, the most common one is to bow before receiving our Lord.

This prayer to Our Lady comes from a homily of the great Cistercian Saint and Doctor St. Bernard of Clairvaux:

THE NEW ROMAN MISSAL IS HERE

Over the last several weeks, we have devoted bulletin

articles on the revised Roman Missal, 3rd Edition. We

hope that by now you have a better understanding of the

changes to the congregation’s responses and prayers on

the Mass. Pew cards, new missalettes and new hymnals

will assist us in receiving the new texts with relative ease

and confidence. We ask for your patience and coopera-

tion in learning the new words, prayers and hymns. We

are called to pray as one community of faith with full,

conscious and active participation in the Holy Sacrifice of

the Mass.

Words for Though… A great doctor of the Church, St. Anselm, declares that a single Mass offered for oneself during life may be worth more than a thousand celebrated for the same intention after death. St. Leonard of Port Maurice supports this statement by saying that one Mass before death may be more profitable than many after it.
