Stewardship Reflections Third Sunday of Lent
“You shall not carve idols for yourselves in the shape of anything . . .” Exodus 20:4
How many “gods” do you put before God? “Idols” do not always take the shape of physical things, things we can touch and feel. Those are easy to recognize. Many times they take the form of things we cannot touch and are much harder to spot like pride, power, ego, time, comfort or health.
YÜÉÅ à{x Wxá~ Éy `ázÜA V{tÜÄxáM
Dear Parishioners and Friends,
Recently, following the school shooting in Florida, there were many expressions of anger.
This was certainly to be expected. But that leads me to a question, “What is the proper role of anger in our lives?”
This weekend’s Gospel may help us to answer this question. Jesus is described as entering the Temple with a whip of cords and expelling the money changers. Now the money changers did perform a necessary task. They exchanged the Roman coins for Jewish ones. The Roman coins displayed the image of the Emperor, often regarded as a god. Bringing such an image into the Temple was thus regarded as blasphemy.
Jesus expelled the money changers, not because of their legitimate role, but because they were cheating people, especially the poor. In another version of the story Jesus says, “My house shall be called a house of prayer, but you have made it a den of thieves.”
It seems, therefore, that when it is just and leads to action, anger is acceptable. What we should not do is bottle up our anger, or allow it to be transformed into hatred. We should always be guided by love and a desire for justice.
Peace & Blessings.
