Dancing down to the holy seas, river run deep, river run free.

River laughed on my birthing day, wind and water joined in play. Soaked my soul in a shining spray river run deep, river run free.

River cry my name to me, lend me hope and memory, Sing me the story of the holy sea, river run deep, river run free.

I stand on the edge, looking down, too scared to swim, afraid I’ll drown. Give me the courage to journey on, river run deep river run free.

The Holy Gospel according to Matthew 4:1-11 Canon Margaret Mitchell

Journey on far from my home, river break this heart of stone. Teach me to love, make me your own, river run deep, river run free.

Hold me close on the day I die, bear me up when my soul is tired. Carry me home on the rising tide, river run deep, river run free.

River singing in you and me, Spirit of life, deep mystery. Catch us up in your melody, river run deep, river run free. Words and music: Ian Macdonald and Gordon Light. 2003; arr. Andrew Donaldson. Used with permission.

FEBRUARY FAITH LECTURES Our hearts are full of gratitude for the presence of the Rev. Dr. Martin Brokenleg OSBCn who shared two lectures with our cathedral community and our guests this past weekend. In his first lecture Fr. Martin shared insight and research into the role played by intergenerational trauma in indigenous communities who remain traumatized by the loss of culture, language and respect. His sharing stirred many emotions but a provided a sense of hope for many as we continue to walk the healing and reconciliation journey together.

In his second lecture, he explained the history of Benedictine monasticism with some thoughts about how the Benedictine rule can be applied in our day. Some folks are beginning to consider how such an application might take root here at St. Paul’s. Our monthly Anglicanism 101 class would do well to pick up these ideas and transform them into a tangible initiative. Stay tuned . . .

Huge thanks to the Education Committee for their protracted work in inviting and facilitating Dr. Brokenleg’s visit with us. Ideas for next year’s presenter and theme are most welcome.

SIMPLICITY: OUR UNNAMED YEARNING A guided retreat with Sr. Brenda Jenner SSJD, Friday evening March 31 – Saturday afternoon April 1, The Shrine, Cache Creek BC So what is simplicity? How is it expressed in the life of Jesus? How is simplicity a basis for change in the church? Is it a gift or a spiritual discipline or both? Some call it an inward disposition expressed outwardly; others know it as both individual and corporate. What do you think? Come and find out! After many years now, we are reviving a retreat ministry in our territory. Our presenter Sr. Brenda Jenner SSJD is a member of the Canadian Anglican Religious Order - Sisterhood of St. John the Divine. Before entering the community 25 years ago, she worked as a nurse in the North and overseas. Within her time in the community, she has done a variety of work including conducting retreats, spiritual direction, and chaplaincy. Sr. Brenda now oversees the worship and work of the SSJD BC House in Victoria. She has a special interest in understanding God’s call of simplicity to us in our lives and in relationships. We will gather at the Shrine in Cache Creek and schedule our time together as follows: SCHEDULE

Visit http://www.territoryofthepeople.ca/events/simplicity-a-lenten-retreat to download the registration form. Please return as soon as possible to the APCI office. Mail, fax, or scan as an email attachment. Twenty-six places only will be confirmed on a first-come, first-served basis. We do expect a full house for this event so time is of the essence. We acknowledge the support of APCI special funds. Sr. Brenda is available to us in part through the mission and outreach of St. Paul’s Cathedral in Kamloops. She will present a public lecture as part of St. Paul’s Lenten Lecture Series on Thursday, March 30 at 12:15 p.m. All are welcome to attend.
